oh my goodness it's june o_o

Y'all know there's always something in the works. Productivity has been...not so great as of late, though. Work's been a Lot, I got sick, I've had some yarny gifts I've been working on, and there's just been no mental capacity for writing. I've been juggling a few one shots, I have the soulmate AU I've been working on, the selkie AU is almost done, and the Epic's always there. My brain just hasn't been good for much beyond yelling at patterns and counting out stitches lately, and even the counting's questionable. Ask me how many times I had to add up an invoice Friday because of Stupid Math Things my brain was doing.

There's only two weeks left of school. I keep telling myself summer will be easy, and next year will hopefully be easier still.

Anyway. When I say writing hasn't been happening, I mean I've rewritten the same scene in the selkie AU about ten times this week before realizing today why it wasn't working, then getting about 400 words in before I went back to a cross stitch I'm working on. Let me get to the end of the school year, and then hopefully I can rally and start posting again. 😂

...anyway here's six sentences from the Selkie AU, which I wanted to post during Mermay but what even is time, anyway?

His human form had never felt more wrong.

His human skin was too smooth, too tight, and the human shirt he wore under his true skin was thick and itchy and wrong. The house was old and drafty, unwelcoming as the thin-lipped woman who had led him to this room, and the coarse fabric did nothing to keep out the chill. Even the heavy boots he had donned — to help blend in with the humans — felt wrong, weighing him down in a way his flippers never had. His skin was belted around his waist securely, the only comfort in this strange place.

It was all wrong.

see joong is giving me the "we live together" level of comfort/lack of boundaries hence why he just does shit mindlessly/nonchalantly that comes off as scandalous. like the "we've shared a toothbrush" level of intimate y'know and it's just so normal/everyday in his head that he doesn't think anything of it meanwhile everyone that bears witness to it is like 👀👀👀😳😳😳

and i find it to be absolutely fucking hilarious.

i love writing and i love word choice. i love the completely different feelings you get from saying "she polished off the last of the drink," with polish carrying the connotation of elegance and gentility (sincere or ironic depending on its context) while the last of feels passive and neutral vs saying "she knocked back what was left" where knock has this almost violent imagery and what was left is almost desolate, drawing the reader's attention to some unspoken calamity that came and went and left only a fraction of the original standing in its wake. if i want to push even further into that feeling of violence i can even say she "slugged" it back. woo mama! and if i want this sentence to be quick and neutral, letting it carry the significance of her action (and why is she taking this action) without so much editorializing, i can keep it simple: "she finished her drink." yes girl give us those clean lines! but wait what if i want to take that and add more feeling? "she finished her drink in a gulp." now that sentence gives us more detail about what she's doing with her body - the previous examples of emotive detail were all about the connotations associated with various forms of figurative language and slang, but now we're grounding it. a gulp! that feels like nervousness, maybe greed. i haven't said anything about her emotions but now you know she's acting fast. some drinks are meant to be taken in one gulp, but not this one, or she wouldn't just be finishing it now. what changed? why? what's behind this action?
