Inktober Day 10: Yōkai
Tumblr media
For those who don't know what Yōkai are, they are a category of spirited and entities from Japanese folklore. I only knew them from Yo-kai watch (go figure, loved that show) and was planning to draw them but saw this adorable (?) little guy and wanted to draw him.
I just found the reference photo below (the first one) but it didn't have a name. Did some digging and I believe it to be Hitotsume-kozō, a neutral spirit who likes to surprise people. There are different variations of their appearance but the common factors between all of them is the appearance of a small boy with with little to no hair, robes, long red tongues, and one big eye. Sometimes he's seen holding his favorite snack (tofu) or a lamp. None of the images below are mine, just things I found on the internet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Had fun researching and drawing this little guy. The drawing is very sketchy but I had a good time. See you tomorrow for more spooks!

You look upon him, his tranquil eyes already on you as he lies on his back; the corner of his lip turned upwards. Legs spread for your naked body to nestle between, your own bloody and bruised knees digging into the soft, plush yaedatami; offering a momentary relief from the pain. Lips bruised and swollen from the stretch, trying to accommodate his girth. Almost cracking at the corners.
If you were told to describe him, only one word springs to mind – Kami.
Divine.
His gestures – possessing an elegance that rivals the dance of willow branches in a gentle breeze. His voice; a melodious biwa ballad. The way blue hues of his eyes resemble the heavens melting into the boundless sea and the moon's reflection on tranquil waters, a sight that both soothes and enchants –
Satoru Gojo was considered an enigmatic legend in your eyes; among the people from your village. A young boy of mysterious lineage, his parentage shrouded in uncertainty. Some deemed him a yōkai, an unsettling otherworldly presence, while others gravitated towards yūrei, a spectral spirit.
He stands tall and slender, a figure exuding undeniable firmness in every line of his body. Hair the shade of soft grey; it reminds you of the moonlight filtering through the forest's canopy near your mother's okiya house, a teahouse adjacent to the gate of your village. Soft and fluffy; as the memory itself. His locks beckoned, inviting you to run your fingers through them, much like those stolen moments when he allowed you to do so – aware of limb-loosing consequences if any other maiden caught wind of your affiliation with Gojo.
Eyes mostly hidden underneath a woven silken cloth. Only allowed to see the day's sun when all others have been blinded; only a selected few made aware of Gojo's countenance.
("It's in the interest of my own well-being," he mumbles against the tender curve of your neck. Teeth grazing the marks there.
His cloth mask's fastened over the bridge of your nose, denying you eyesight. Hands sliding beneath the scarlet hakama, altered into a flowing skirt, enabling him to grasp your bare thighs with a grip so tight it threatens to leave lingering imprints. He's wrenching his pelvis up, engorged cock sliding against the sensitive walls of your drenched core as he moves you up and down his lap.
Robe shamelessly untied and disheveled but still hanging from his shoulders; with your arms clinging to the garment for dear life, a lifeline that anchors you as he delves so deeply that it elicits a desperate mewl from your lips, pushing aside any lingering questions.
"I cannot allow commoners to pose threats to my safety. After all, I am but a Kami." His hand raises one of yours, placing your palm flat against his. In that instant, you feel it—the non-existent space between your palms expanding, pushing your hand away from his. An invisible barrier materializing and separating your limb from his. It makes your fingers tingle.
"Who would–umph–desire to hurt you, my honored one."
A forceful push surges from behind you — or at least it feels that way — propelling your body towards Gojo's body. Lips colliding with his, all tenderness vanishing from his actions. His strong arm encircles your waist, lifting you up and creating the sensation of flying through the air. In one fluid motion, he turns you both around, deepening the kiss when his tongue plunges between your gasping lips.
"No one would dare, angel.")
– His taste. Briny yet the pearlescent droplets of his prespend sweet. With your cheeks hollowed, nails digging into the meat of his thighs, you savor the saline tang of him on your tongue. Tears teetering on the edge of your waterline, threatening to spill down your cheeks; eyelashes fluttering as he thrusts his hips upwards. Hand on the crown of your head pushing down simultaneously.
The swollen tip of his leaking cock plunges into your throat, scratching the sensitive back of it, and causing an involuntary gag reflex, throat instinctively closing.
"Just like that," Gojo groans in response to the sensation of your tight throat suffocating his cock, his arm positioned behind his head while the other moves to cup your cheek. His thumb tenderly wipes away a tear tracing a path down your face.
Leaving only his tip inside, you suck; draw him in, the tip of your tongue swirling over his slit as you let all the saliva gathered in your mouth coat his head, letting it dribble from the corners of your mouth onto his cock. Using your hand to spread the slick, covering his entire length in the mixture with your tongue concentrating on the spongy spot under his tip, slowly moving down until your lips meet your fingers wrapped around his hilt.
With bated breath, you ease your throat open wider, feeling the mushy head breach the gateway to your trachea; the friction growing more intense as he pushes past your tonsil area. Swallowing carefully, you take him in until his pelvis presses flush against your nose. You add a low hum to the mix, your fingernails lightly grazing the taut muscles of his abdomen, feeling it tighten as he twitches inside you. Something swells in your chest, expands and tightens over the feeling. Pride? More like a fervent devotion that borders on reverence.
"You little akuma–" he lets out a breath, fingers tracing the bulging curve of your throat before you pop him out with a wet sound. You repeat after – take him fully down your throat, keep him there and humming; vibrations shooting up his every nerve ending.
And the sounds he makes – the groan he lets out is drawn-out and echoing. You kiss his cock one more time before nipping at his sensitive area just below his abdomen, muscles hardened and shaped into a v. A place stained by the nips of your teeth, nicks of your nails; a teasing breeze caressing the shoreline.
Face moving upwards, your lips ache to meld with his. Yet as his breath mingles with yours, his fingers snake around your throat, tightening their grip.
Gojo holds your face intimately close to his that you can discern the white sparkles seemingly dancing within his eyes.
So close that you can distinguish myriad shades of blue within his iris, reminiscent of the Pleiades, or the very hue of the sky on a day when wisteria blooms swell.
"What are you doing," his head tilts to the side, lips tracing the corner of your lip until moving to your jaw. Soft gentle nibbles in contrast with the tight grip on your throat as you remain on all fours above his body that's still adorned in his night robe but completely untied.
A light breath escapes your yearning lips, eyes searching his face for any imperfections, any blemish in his otherwise divine visage – but finding none. Heart pounding in rhythm with the intensity of the moment, you believe that he's capable of hearing the beats. Thump, thump.
"Akami," you mumble, eyes falling to his lips when the tip of his tongue peaks out to slide over them, "kiss."
You remain motionless, almost paralyzed by the heated tension in the air, afraid to make a move or even swallow. Your cunt drenched, folds glistening with need to be filled. It pulsates, thumping steadily as if your heart dropped between your legs.
Gojo's eyes, once filled with desire, now appear almost bored, as if he's testing your resolve.
"Do you believe you are deserving of a kiss from Akami?"
Your head sways from side to side instinctively before you even fully process his question. Thighs failing to press together to relieve some of the tension as his wide frame blocks your attempts.
"I would not pose such queries without belief in their pertinence, correct?"
You nod. His face contours, creases between his brows. Bending one leg, he brings his knee to your cunt. Pressing onto the pulsating nerve on top, making you mewl and moan from finally getting some release. Your hips shamelessly grind onto his offering knee, painting it in your juices.
"Speak," he corrects you, putting his knee higher — forcing your calves to strain in order to remain on the soft cushion.
"You are—mmph—," Gojo's eyes flick down to see the way your pussy parts for his knee, circling it and disturbing your chain of thoughts, "—you are correct, Go—gojo."
"Good," his thumb presses against your lower lip, forcing your mouth to part more before he pushes the digit flat against your tongue, "then undertake a deserving act."
Satoru Gojo refuses to allow your lips contact with his. Even after what feels like hours – when he's already painted your body in his pearlescent spent, now slickening your gummy walls and sticking to his cock like honey – he's continuing to pound into you with relentless strength.
And yet he still doesn't let you reach the sweet high. Unable to tumble into the abyss of ecstasy. Your body his canvas, on which he paints strokes of desire – a merciless dance on the edge of rapture; where you can feel the waves building and receding like a capricious ocean tide.
("Patience, my angel. You're too pure to be stained. My forsaken tenshi.")
Robe finally discarded, he has you positioned to bend over the side of the yaedatami; high enough for your back to arch forcibly. The stretch across your abdomen feels like a taut bowstring. Ass up, held aloft and elbows pressed against the floor. Your hands grope desperately for purchase – yet finding nothing in this empty sleeping chamber – as Gojo looms over you, one arm bracing his weight beside your head, the other cradling your cheek as he spreads you wide for his cock to plunge insanely deep into your leaking cunt.
His thrusts are relentless, each one driving his cock impossibly deep. So deep it makes you feel as if the tip of his cock grazes your cervix, a blunt pressure inside building with each pivot of his hips. It builds steadily inside you, like a dam about to burst. And the loudness of your moans only assures the man in your body's response to him – his body, his heat. His cock. All of him.
"Just like that–," Gojo's voice's raspy, throat strained from the sounds of pleasure he's given you, "stay down—ugh–"
His words cause your back to arch more; prideful in his praise. The pleasure profound, toe-curling and spiraling through your body.
"Gojoo–," you try to meet the aggressive roll of his hips, even if the position doesn't let you move too much, "please–'m so close–please…"
You're begging, whining for him to never stop. To – for once – listen to his acolyte's pleas for release. And just as he senses your cunt quivering, throbbing with the impending orgasm, he draws a sharp thrust. Body heavy against your bottom, bottoming out before pulling out.
His response is a single word, "No" escaping his lips. Sitting back on his legs, his eyes lock onto the sight of your cunt – spread open, his own cum trickling from the fluttering, empty hole, glistening as it strains your inner thighs; pussy puffy and swollen from overstimulation. Chest puffing out, he basks in the tableau before him.
"I shall have a painter immortalize such image," he muses, leaning closer. Fingers tracing the curve of your calves, gliding over the skin of your thighs, bathing in the slickness of your inner thighs. He swipes the blend of his cum and juices from your cunt, collects them on his fingers.
In a commanding gesture, he raises you up, positioning you to sit atop your legs, mirroring his own stance. His wet fingers dance along your parted lips as you grow more desperate.
"Please–," you beg more, licking the saline sweetness off your lips, throat parched, "please–."
Gojo doesn't respond – not immediately. Instead, he turns you to face him with your back. Pulling your body onto his sitting lap and thrusting his cock into your abused cunt without any resistance. Your body strains as your back arches, head falling back to rest against his neck as his hands grasp both of your biceps, securing you to his chest as he thrusts upwards.
"You reach your release only when I deem it," his lips trace your neck, biting the sensitive flesh as he moves you up and down his lap. You can feel his cock scratching that insatiable itch deep inside you, each punishing thrust pushing you closer to the edge. The emptiness that follows only stokes the fervor building within you, a desire that only HE can satiate.
And does he take his time…
Legs pushed against your chest, his body weighs down on you – folded almost in half. Tears of exhaustion and bliss course down your cheeks, his name on your lips. Moaning, gasping, arching your back as you lose yourself to the euphoria that builds inside. His cock pushes against your clenched walls, swelling and so close to releasing and coating your walls with his sore.
But Gojo holds tight to his resolution; muscles taut under your trembling body; your fragile body. You're his to do with as he pleases, after all.
"Ahh–close, Gojo–please," you plead, feeling his cock plunge into your core, and the stretch of your cunt swallowing him to the root, "I want to–ugh–I can't–"
He cuts you off with a rather painful thrust, the head of his cock bruising your cervix, it seems. Making you gasp at the suddenness and pain. It's afterward that he slows down, rapid thrusts becoming languid rolls of his hips. He moans, gruff and low in his throat as he pushes himself deeper inside of you with each movement.
"You cannot what?" His eyes gleam even as he gives you a momentary reprieve. The thrumming pleasure from being so completely filled subsides, but not entirely leaving altogether – just enough to remind you that Gojo's presence is still there.
"I can't–," you whimper in his ear as he moves onto his elbows, straining your hamstrings until you feel as if he's gonna tear your legs apart, "I can't…"
"You cannot what?" Gojo demands, his cock stilling inside you, only to resume as he leans you forward, "tell me, my faithful one."
"No more–please," your lips search for his; to which his head fives to your clavicles, nibbling the tender and sensitive skin there, "I need the release, please," you beg with a strained voice.
His eyes flutter shut, teeth catching hold on your shoulder, harder than they should, "beg one more time. Let me hear your prayers."
He's waiting for a particular syllable and sounds; the first syllable of his name. For it to flow out of your lips.
"Please–," your voice becomes but a mere exhale, body spent; falling to his mercy. Shaking as you beg for this man to take whatever he wants. The only reason you're even able to speak is to plead for release, having nothing else to offer but yourself freely to him. A twisted, filth-covered shinsen.
In the end, Gojo eventually does take your offering, grants you your release.
Being that way for several moons.

Please don't reblog!
I had to compress/scale down this beautiful piece so much in Clip Studio to make it fit Tumblr's 20 MB demands, hnnnnnng—
Coughs in complete absolute professionalism
The first of my OCs have officially had their links posted on my pinned Master Post! This is one of them: my beautiful, beloved, and tragic Inuyasha OC Amaterasu. This is a piece of art I commissioned earlier in 2023 from the lovely ItsNattie, from whom I've been commissioning art of many kinds for over a decade now! It's a massive poster-esque piece for Amaterasu's FanFic I've been slowly working on (it's one of uh... many... I have a draftaholic problem), and, if you hadn't guessed, she's a Sesshōmaru pairing!
That said, I consider an OC's FanFic version and their RP versions to be entirely separate for the sake of exploring ✨ infinite possibilities! ✨ So, while Amaterasu is paired with Sesshōmaru in her FanFiction, that doesn't mean I'll only allow Sesshōmaru RPers to exclusively pair with her romantically. I like to leave that up to vibes. If I feel like she's got chemistry with someone, you bet your zeros and ones I'm gonna ship it!
With that out of the way, allow me a moment to wax poetic about the weight and meaning behind this gorgeous piece of art to end the post.
Ahem.
TW: Death
Amaterasu is a character who, in essence, is supposed to be the sun goddess herself—the name isn't just for show. However, through the circumstances of her story, she's been sealed in a mortal body, and much of her power is diminished throughout the series. Like everyone else, she's out for Naraku's head. However, she ends up encountering Sesshōmaru. At first, they seem as if they'll kill each other. The reason is pretty straightforward. Sesshōmaru is an Inu Daiyōkai and the Lord of the West while Amaterasu is the Head Kami and Ruler of Takamagahara. Their very existences challenge each other and, by nature, they feel an instinctive loathing of the other.
However, due to their equally calm dispositions, instead of a fight, they have an interogation a conversation instead. Sesshōmaru questions who she is, and Amaterasu does the same. Jaken gives a fussy introduction on his Lord's behalf, and Amaterasu gives her name... before promptly telling them both to turn around so she can get out of the spring she was bathing in when Sesshōmaru sniffed out her divine aura.
They end up having several more encounters with each other, but Amaterasu has far more interactions with Inuyasha's party initially. At least until Rin comes into the picture. Then, she travels strictly with Sesshōmaru under the pretense of protecting Rin from him. Over time, the two become more tolerant of one another until they start checking over their shoulder to ensure the other is still there, using each other as a leaning post at night or entrusting the other with safeguarding Rin, Jaken, and A-Un when the other leaves for one reason or another. It borders that fine line of respect and affection; Sesshōmaru is aloof and apathetic, while Amaterasu unabashedly loves life and is compassionate. She learns through him that not all yōkai are out to kill humanity, and he finds a new warmth in life with her presence. Like winter in the face of spring, they need each other to complete a cycle or, in this case, each other. By "The Final Act," they are pressing their palms together to be sure the other is okay, staring each other in the eyes and covering each other in a fight.
However, I call Amaterasu a tragic OC for a reason. In the end, once Naraku is slain, Amaterasu's seal is undone, and her mortal body slowly breaks down. Without the seal, her power returns to her in total, and its too immense to be contained in such a shell. A kami of her magnitude cannot sustain a shape on the mortal plane. With what few hours they have left, she asks to return to the place they first met—the spring surrounded by sakura trees—which Sesshōmaru indulges. Flying her there in his arms with Rin and Jaken riding his mokomoko-sama. There, she has her farewells to each of them, praising Jaken's loyalty and courage despite his stature and weakness, telling Rin that she will watch her as she becomes a lady with the utmost warmth and character, and telling Sesshōmaru that he has changed her. That she can never be the same person she was before, but she wishes that she could, if only to relive it all. Because it was the happiest time of her life.
Under the shining sunrise, Amaterasu promises that, so long as their feelings remain unchanging, she will find a way to meet him there again. Every time he feels the sun's light and traces its beams, it will be her smiling and touching his hand, praying for him to live.
Finally, as her body crumbles into glowing flowers, they share a first and last kiss... until all that's touching his lips are cherry blossoms that fall through his arms to the ground of the clearing... blooming wildly with flowers and other foliage and surrounded by onlooking wildlife.
Thus, the feudal fairy tale of two tragic loves from completely opposite realms of existence concludes in the only way it ever could.

Mokumokuren
Birds of different feathers flock together
Noticed online by head-hunting publishers, Mokumokuren hasn’t waited very long before polarising the attention of Japanese readers. With strange The Summer Hikaru Died, horrific bromance dealing with body dispossession, the mangaka signs a series of sophisticated oddity, that sets itself apart from the predictability of current fantasy productions.
Interview by Fausto Fasulo. Original translation: Aurélien Estager. English translation: “Keikotwins”. Bibliography: Marius Chapuis. Thanks: Camille Hospital & Clarisse Langlet (Pika), Yuta Nabatame, Mayuko Yamamoto & Mana Kukimoto (Kadokawa), Chiho Muramatsu (Tohan)
(T/N: Interview given to ATOM in winter 2023; 2 volumes were out in French.)
-
In an interview given to the CREA website in November 2022, you confided inventing stories since very young. Did your first fictions resemble the ones you draw nowadays?
It’s true that there are quite a lot of common points between the stories I imagined when I was a child and the ones I tell nowadays in my mangas. Especially a specific motif, that has been haunting me since the time when I wasn’t really aware of the world surrounding me: the presence amongst us of “non-human” beings, that nonetheless have a perfectly normal, ordinary appearance…
And how was this “obsession” born?
Precisely identifying the origins is complicated, my memories are too blurry, I think… What I can tell you is that I’ve always been fascinated by “creatures”. For example, I remember being very impressed by Peter Jackson’s bestiary in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. By the way, still in a fantasy register, I am also a big fan of Harry Potter adaptations… (She thinks.) And I’ve always liked yōkai stories, you know. I think that what I like in all these mythologies is the idea of species classification: each has its own characteristics – physical, biological – its own way to apprehend its environment.
In Japan, yōkai are integral part of regional folklore. Did the place you grew up in have some specific beliefs?
I was born and grew up in Tokyo, and, as you must know, yōkai are mostly associated with rural areas. I was thus never really bathed in this type of regional fantasy folklore. There are all kinds of yōkai and we can perhaps see in some more contemporary urban legends the echo of certain past beliefs? (She thinks.) I am a bit frustrated, because I believe that I could remember a legend that would have impacted me, but nothing comes to mind immediately, sorry!
You have already said so in an interview and it’s quite obvious when reading your work: you are a big amateur of horrific fiction. What has been your first contact with the genre, all medium included?
It was television that introduced me to horror: special shows, television films, series, I was watching these programs with a mix of fear and enthusiasm, a confused sensation that particularly delighted me! (She thinks.) And amongst all the aired shows, I will remember two titles: Hontō ni atta kowai hanashi and Kaidan shin mimibukuro*.
* Inspired by the homonymous manga magazine published by Asahi Shimbun, Hontō ni atta kowai hanashi (lit. “Scary stories that really happened”) is a series produced by Fuji Television that has been airing more or less weekly since 2004. Derived from literary material (a series of compilations of hundreds of short stories by Hirokatsu Kihara and Ichirō Nakayama, published from 1990 to 2005) Kaidan shin mimibukuro is a series made of several short movies depicting ghost stories based on real testimony.
Did you read horror mangas when you were young?
Let’s say that I was more interested in live-action productions. Nowadays, I obviously appreciate some horror manga authors, without pretending to be any expert in the subject. For example, I like Junji Itō’s work, but I am far from knowing it for a long time… (She thinks.) I could also talk about Shigeru Mizuki, who I also appreciate a lot.
The mechanics of fear aren’t the same in occidental and oriental fictions. You like American horrific productions – like Ari Aster movies – as much as ones from Japanese origin – you notably quote Ichi Sawamura novels and Kōji Shiraishi feature films. Can we say that you are tying these two perspectives with The Summer Hikaru Died?
My relationship with horror is more imbued with oriental sensitivity. But what I find remarkable in occidental horrific productions is work on image. In The Shining like in Ari Aster movies, for example, there is real research made on frame composition and choice of colours. I also try to follow this aesthetic reflection in my work as a mangaka.
In Ari Aster’s work, beyond the very precise staging, there is this permanent desire of ambiguity. Do you try to dig this same equivocal trench?
Absolutely. I try to tell complex feelings as well in The Summer Hikaru Died, like fear dyed with nostalgia or attachment, repulsion mixed with fascination, with attraction…
How do you “sort out” the shots that inspire you in cinema?
I don’t draw while freeze-framing during specific scenes. I would always rather watch a movie as a “focussed” spectator. However, I pay a lot of attention to the way the director composes their frame. I sometimes take some notes, but I most often simply keep it in a corner of my mind.
Could you tell us when and how the story and characters of The Summer Hikaru Died appeared to you? Have they matured a long time within you?
I’ve started thinking about this story when I was preparing university entrance exams. I was aspiring to join an art uni, and I was drawing every day. I can’t really say I made my characters “mature”: back then, I wasn’t thinking that the drawings I was making would one day end up being published, way less being serialised! I innocently created characters close to me, without guessing that one day they’d become manga protagonists.
One of your foundational reads was Sui Ishida’s Tokyo Ghoul manga. Can you tell us how you discovered it and what effect it had on you?
I don’t really remember how I discovered this series, but what I know is that I became crazy about it at first read. What I liked – and what I still like – is this idea of telling a story that confronts humans to these “different” beings while following the point of view of a character that represents alterity. Beyond this strictly dramatic aspect, Sui Ishida’s storyboarding and character design have had a strong impact on my work. However, I want to add that Tokyo Ghoul isn’t the only title I took inspiration from, I obviously have other references…
Do you do a lot of researches to define the design of your characters? You seem to draw them easily, in a very natural gesture…
I haven’t spent a long time defining my protagonists. First, there are few in the manga, then, they evolve in a rather realistic universe. My goal was rather simple: they had to look believable in the reader’s eyes. I wanted people to be able to imagine crossing them in the street, you see?
It’s after seeing illustrations posted on social media that depicted the future characters of The Summer Hikaru Died that the publishing department of the Young Ace Up magazine noticed you. How have you reacted when approached?
I was very surprised, because I absolutely wasn’t trying to become a mangaka. I would have never projected in such a future, you see. And, very honestly, if they hadn’t suggested working on this series, I don’t think I would ever had pushed the doors of a publishing house… I am then very thankful towards the persons who have allowed me to enter.
And what would you have done if you hadn’t been solicited?
Back when I’ve been contacted, I was considering – still vaguely – working in the video games field. But I wasn’t really proactive, I wasn’t contacting anyone, wasn’t sending resumes…
Did you want to do chara-design?
Why not, yes. What I like in video games is the range of possibilities they offer. You can then create an entire universe and this is rather exhilarating.
So you’re a gamer…
I have dropped my controller since I’ve started drawing manga. But yes, when I had more time, I played rather regularly, especially Nintendo productions…
Even if you play rather little nowadays, do video games influence your work?
I can’t say whether it really is an influence, but the Undertale game has left a big mark on me. I felt its creator’s strong will to surprise players, to make them feel unprecedented sensations…
Horror manga only relies on art and storyboard to provoke fear, whereas cinema and video games can also rely on sound. Is it from this observation that you have decided to particularly work on your sound effects?
Absolutely. I have thought a lot about the way to introduce and stage sound in The Summer Hikaru Died. The sound effects that you can find in the manga are indeed the result of this approach.
In an interview given to the Realsound website, you mention the use of the シャワシャワ (“shawa shawa”) sound effect. Knowing that occidental readers are way less sensitive to these graphicoustic details, can you explain its meaning?
“Shawa shawa” expresses the song cicadas make in western Japan. It’s a very special noise because in the different regions live different species that make specific sounds. So when I choose this specific sound effect, I convey a geographic and temporal piece of information to the reader, who can then guess the location and season the action takes place in. (She thinks.) When using this sound – that we especially find in the beginning of the manga – my goal was to play with silence, particularly when the song stops. I thus had the idea of representing this sound effect with an easily readable font, so the reader would make no effort to decipher it, as if the sound was asserting itself naturally, you see? I hoped to suggest a saturation they couldn’t avoid and that, when it’d stop, would immerse them in absolute silence.
The Summer Hikaru Died transcribes very well this particular atmosphere of Japanese summers…
Yes, I really wanted to signify this languor in my manga. And the cicadas’ song we discussed earlier contributes to creating this atmosphere: it’s an overwhelming sound, sometimes irritating, you cannot escape from in summer – Japanese readers obviously know what I’m talking about. (She thinks.) I also gave special attention to shadows: summer light being very bright, shadows are very sharp, very deep.
Do digital tools allow you to get this result more efficiently than traditional?
I work on Clip Studio Paint, and it’s true that it sometimes allow me to save time. Consider the work on shadows: I never apply solid black because I like saturating space with hatches and, with digital tools, I can obtain the desired result faster because I can duplicate each of my lines.
Your use of hatches is sometimes reminiscent of Shūzō Oshimi’s…
I don’t know his mangas very well, but it’s funny that you mention him because I recently read his latest series, Okaeri Alice. In any case, I really like his style and I perfectly understand how you can bring his universe and mine together.
The Summer Hikaru Died relies on the concept of body dispossession, that obviously takes back to the Body Snatcher novel by Jack Finney and its movie adaptations. Did you think about it?
I don’t know this book very well, but I know its theme has been approached often, especially in movies. As I was saying at the beginning of this interview, my idea was to adopt the point of view of a non-human and tell his indecision, his moral questions…
We also find this idea in Hitoshi Iwaaki’s Parasite…
I haven’t read the manga fully, but I’ve watched the anime adaptation that was released a few years ago (R/N: in 2014). I remember rather liking it, even if I think I offer something different with The Summer Hikaru Died. What interests me is sounding the inwardness of my non-human character out and expose all his dilemmas. What is his place amongst men? Is he legitimate in our world? Here is the type of questions that pushed me.
One of the impacting scenes of volume 1 of The Summer Hikaru Died is the one when Yoshiki penetrated Hikaru’s body by shoving his arm into his torso. It’s a sequence that is both very sensuaI – to not say sexuaI – and also very horrific. How did you get this idea?
I wanted to put the readers in an uncomfortable position. A stressful situation that could take several forms because, according to your sensitivity, you can feel very different emotions in front of this scene: sexuaI arousaI, fear or disgust. For me, it was supposed to put the reader in some kind of catatonia, you see?
Do you chat a lot with your tantō, especially around these slightly “complicated” scenes?
I have free rein, you know, I can draw everything I want. My editorial supervisor has never asked me to temper some sexuaIIy connotated parts. My discussions with him don’t revolve around this kind of things, but rather around the structure of the scenario itself: where to place this scene in the narration? Is it better to put this sequence before this other one? Nowadays, I am more at ease with all the scripting layout but, at the beginning, I needed support.
What allows you to get, from a dramatic point of view, the mix between bromance and horror?
I wanted to show the differences in sensitivities and values between a human being and an “other than human”, and tell the misunderstandings this can cause when both meet. When Yoshiki “scratches” under the appearance of the one who is supposed to be his best friend, it creates a first point of conflict in the story. I then hoped to make his relationship with Hikaru – or rather with the “entity” that pretends to embody him – a kind of undefinable bond, that wouldn’t be friendship, nor love.
Do you know today where this strange relationship between your two heroes will lead you?
I know more or less how all of this will evolve, yes. I have decided on my story’s general plot since the beginning. I can only tell you that The Summer Hikaru Died won’t be a long series.
How do you explain the almost instant public plebiscite of your series in Japan? You perhaps cannot have perspective on it but, in a saturated publishing landscape, you have managed to stand out…
Hm… Indeed, I don’t really have precise explanations to give you about this success. Maybe the covers’ design has been in favour of the manga? I asked the person in charge of graphics to make sure that the visuals would be noticeable in bookstores. That’s why the books have this monochrome aspect, with the title discreetly placed. I didn’t want obvious advertisement banners, but something simple, like this blue background for the first volume, on which the character stands out. I also wished to create contrast between the jacket’s and the inner cover’s drawings. I thus had requirements that didn’t quite go alongside what we can nowadays see on the shelves of Japanese bookstores.

Risevember 2023: Day 2 - Day of the Dead
Tumblr media
Leo was quite accustomed to Run of the Mill pizzeria. Portal to the alleyway outside it, enter the restaurant, pick up a stack of pizza, mess with Señor Hueso a little bit, portal home. The routine was easy.
One day, however, as the red-eared slider casually entered the restaurant like normal, he noticed something different. It was just as busy as it normally was, but the scenery was significantly different. More decorations, more happy chatter, overall, just a much more jovial spirit in the place.
Leo noticed Señor Hueso passing by in a rush and, much to Hueso’s dismay, flagged the yōkai down.
“Woah, bone man, what’s the special occasion? There a wedding or something I didn’t know about?” the blue clad turtle jested lightheartedly.
“Not that, pepino,” Señor Hueso, the “bone man” in question, deadpanned at the young turtle’s flippancy. But he was in too high of spirits to be brought down by the childish nickname. “Hoy es el Día de los Muertos, so that’s why we’ve spruced the place up a bit.”
The skeleton gestured to the eye-catching papel picado strewn about the pizzeria, the candles brilliantly illuminating the room, and, most prominently, the grand altar containing an array of tenderly crafted items.
Leo tilted his head in confusion. “El Día de… ¿Qué?”
“El Día de los Muertos. En tu mundo, mayormente se celebra esta tradición en México,” Hueso commented, “but there are similar holidays in the Hidden City.”
“So it’s some sort of death celebration day?” Leo raised his brow bone. “Seems sort of morbid, you know?”
“Eh, less of a death celebration, and more of a commemoration of their lives,” the bone man explained as he walked up to the altar and kneeled before it. Leo joined him. “We adorn their altars, sus ofrendas con velas, calaveras de azúcar, papel picado, fotos, cempasúchil, y símbolos de sus vidas. We also place their favorite foods to nurture their spirits, and we do it all to honor their lives.”
Leo nodded along and stared inquisitively at the altar, enjoying the opportunity to deepen his understanding of the holiday.
After gazing upon the pan de muerto, mole con arroz, flowers, candles, all of the trinkets representing the life and love of so many people, Leo looked back at Hueso exuberantly.
“Teach me more.”
(@sariphantom gotta love the Leo-Hueso dynamic)

Samhain/Halloween - Part 3 From the beginning -> here
Al'ar lead Kiyoshi to the Castle. He should have known... He still hasn't forgotten Jack - not a single thing about him. Despite all these years in solitude and pain.
Tumblr media
Kōjin sent him here for a reason so he will obey. Watch and listen - just as he had been told to. And Dtui was right. It's Halloween. Everyone will think this is just a cool costume... Ji Ho: "Cool costume, Kiyoshi!" Saiwa: "You are a Yōkai, right?" Kiyoshi: "Yes. I am."
Tumblr media
Only Jack knows that this is the truth... It's painful for Jack to see Kiyoshi again after he broke up with him.
Tumblr media
The Boys went over to 'Nosfe Rrratu's Rollerskate Rink'.
Tumblr media
It's set up right next to the place where Leander 'killed' Wesley and 'cursed' Vlad a few years ago...
Tumblr media
Kiyoshi just sat and watched. And Greg seems to watch Kiyoshi... (In hindsight so many interactions make more sense. Now that we know that Greg is Jack's father...)
Tumblr media
(I never know how much they know about Kiyoshi and Jack, though...)

COMING SOON: HEAT WEEK JULY 2023
It’s that time of year again, Krovs! Heat week is coming around the corner. Starting now certain species will be on edge, agitated and moody, and exhibit other pre-heat behavior like higher sexual arousal, fatigue or extra energy, trouble sleeping, and appetite changes until heat week starts. These specific species that go into heat are all listed below with more detailed symptoms that'll occur once our event begins.
Heat week begins at 12PM EST on Monday, July 17th. Please continue reading for more information.
WEREWOLVES
Alpha wolves experience rut like how omegas experience heat. Although instead of submitting, they feel the need to dominate and breed omegas or betas. Ruts may increase once they get in contact with the pheromones of an omega in heat. During the first stage of their rut, they feel a strong urge to take care of all unbonded omegas in proximity and protect their nests. Alphas are territorial during their rut and aggressive towards those they consider as rivals. Outbreaks of violence between wolves are not uncommon. Alphas bonded to a partner are much calmer and less affected by their rut. All alphas have larger genitals and a knot that forms at the base of their penis when they’re close to orgasm. This knot inflates at climax to "lock" themselves inside their partner and hold in semen, which increases the chances of pregnancy. It’ll subside about thirty minutes after an orgasm, but until then the omega and alpha cannot break away.
Betas also experience rut and heat, although it’s not nearly to the degree of alphas or omegas. They neither have a knot nor are they able to produce slick like omegas and they can’t conceive. They're attracted to the pheromones of both alphas and omegas as they can fill in for either role.
Heat is when omegas are most fertile, most submissive, and ready to be bred. Some choose to have partners help during their heats. Others hide in their nests without a mate until their heat is over. During their heat, omegas produce a sickly sweet scent to draw alphas to mate with them, regardless of whether the omega wants to or not. This scent is a combination of the omega’s own amplified natural scent with the self-lubricant they produce called “slick." Many omegas will show symptoms a few days before the start of heat like mood swings, increased appetite, and insatiable arousal. Another common sign their heat is coming soon is an omega's need to “nest.” They’ll gather soft items like bedding, blankets, and clothing that they (or their mated alpha or partner) own and build a nest in a secure room for comfort. If their nest is invaded during heat, they may develop trust issues as nests are an omega’s territory. Male omegas in general have small genitals and no knot.
Note: Omegas are unable to conceive in Krovs due to the powerful magic negating fertility.
All werewolf hybrids experience heat.
SHAPESHIFTERS
Shapeshifters go into heat similarly to beta werewolves. Mood swings, physical sensitivity, territorial behavior, fevers, and the powerful urge to reproduce and breed are common symptoms. Some may exhibit specific mating behavior according to the animal that they are.
All shapeshifter hybrids experience heat.
DRAGONS
Dragons go into heat like shapeshifters. Mood swings, physical sensitivity, territorial behavior, fevers, and the powerful urge to reproduce and breed are common symptoms. They also experience highly possessive behavior towards their partners during heat.
All dragon hybrids experience heat.
PHOENIXES
Phoenixes, pamolas, and thunderbirds go into heat like shapeshifters and dragons, where it is commonly experienced as an increased need for sex and physical touch. Mood swings, sensitivity, and the craving for body contact are common symptoms. All of these birds may also exhibit more showy displays in order to attract a mate.
SPIRITS
Yōkai spirits like inugami, kitsunes, and nekos experience heat like shapeshifters. Common symptoms include: fevers, mood swings, and increased desires for physical contact and breeding. They also experience sexual behavior according to their respective animals.
Inugami will experience more dog-like behavior in heat. They’ll constantly be mounting anyone and anything they can to masturbate, including people, pillows, blankets, etc. They might also be orally fixated during this week with excessive licking.
Kitsunes exhibit their true fox behavior in heat with excessive barking or screaming to attract mates, even if they’re trapped in their human disguise with the power negative collars.
Nekos behave much like cats, both small and large depending on their neko spirit. They may stretch out and yowl more often and scent everything of their partners’ to mark their territory. They’ll also exhibit more aggressive and playful behavior like mounting similarly to inugami and play-biting necks.
All yōkai spirit hybrids experience heat.
DEMONS
Demons like arachnas and familiars experience heat similarly to shapeshifters. Common symptoms include: fevers, mood swings, and increased desires for physical contact and breeding. They can also be much more aggressive during this week.
All arachna and familiar hybrids experience heat.
SUPPRESSANTS
For those wanting to avoid heat's effects, suppressants are available from castle doctors or the town pharmacist. These drugs suppress the desire for sex and will block the emission of pheromones. They also have the side effect of causing positive emotions and pleasant behavior. Castle and town residents have unlimited access to these suppressants. Claimed and purchased slaves will need permission from their owners to receive them. Unclaimed slaves looking to soothe their heat can always ask a guard or another employee or guest if they can get suppressants.
Our July heat week event will start at 12PM EST on Monday, July 17th. This information will be posted again along with full OOC details at the start of the event.
Players, please LIKE this post so that we know it has been read.

Tokyo Night Parade - Picture Book
Tokyo Night Parade by J.P. Takahashi, Minako Tomigahara (Illustrations) Published 2023 by Harper Collins
Tumblr media
Written by J.P. Takahashi and Illustrated by Minako Tomigahara, 2023’s Tokyo Night Parade is about the “hyakkiyagyō, or the Night Parade of One Hundred Demons … said to walk the streets of Japan on evenings when the human world and the yōkai world overlap” (Takahashi, 2023). Eka is our main character- and a stand-in or representative of the author- and we follow her as she returns to Japan from New York for her favorite time of the year, the Night Parade. We watch as she wears her kitsune onesie and joins her friend Kappa as the festivities begin and she joins the demons for their parade. They chat about how life has changed for Eka and how she struggles to have people understand her, the demons relating. However, they also celebrate their togetherness and their parade with singing and dancing and with the hope of coming together again.
In Vardell’s 2019 text- Children’s Literature in Action: A Librarian’s Guide (3rd ed.)- we are given evaluation criteria regarding children’s picture books such as characters, plot, setting, theme, style, illustrations, and cultural markers- let’s take a look at a couple (2019). In this beautifully hued, illustrated, and written tale, we can evaluate the criteria of Cultural Markers. Takahashi and Tomigahara highlight the Japanese fables of yōkai through their joining in the Japanese tradition of the night parade- we highlight this culture through these elements written and illustrated. Speaking of Illustration, Illustrator Minako Tomigahara does a stunning job showing off her technical skill through design and hue, enveloping the reader in expressive colors and characters as the story progresses. Tomigahara also pays close mind and attention to the diversity of Japanese yōkai present between these pages, showing off their diversity in appearance and range of character- from sinister to playful.
In discussing its place in a library setting and the role it can play, this could be an excellent piece in discussing Japanese culture, tradition, and the fables of yōkai. I could see this picture book taking a great place in a display regarding Japanese culture and experience and a place in discussion regarding fables/ demons/ creatures of different cultures. In my mind, with the creative interest I have seen in children at my workplaces,  I can see children doing drawings and colorings of creatures like yōkai- from tradition or their own minds- and making a show of displaying them and discussing them- what they stand for or do.

Obscure Animation Subject #56: Bemu Bemu Hunter: Gotengu Tenmaru
Originally posted on a Twitter on April 16, 2023.
An anime television series created by Mushitaro Kabuto and directed by Hiroshi Shidara, its produced by Toei Animation and aired on Fuji TV Thursday nights at 7 PM from May 26 to November 3, 1983.
The show is about the adventures of a demon slayer named Tenmaru, who goes through a lot of hi jinx. This show is short-lived, only having 20 episodes (one unaired) due to low ratings. It served as Toei making a comeback to the yōkai craze, following GeGeGe no Kitarō’s success.
Toei previously attempted a comeback to the yōkai craze back in 1973 with Dororon Enma-kun, which ironically aired on the same timeslot. Unlike previous yōkai shows from Toei, this show is more gag driven, and aimed at a younger demographic compared to previous shows.
Despite bombing in the ratings when airing, it gained a cult following years later, with the show getting its own fansite. Unfortunately the show is currently lost media, with only two episodes found online. However, obscure anime has been getting media releases in recent years.
So if a physical media release gets announced for this show, the compete series will be found. As of now, two episodes are available, one being the final aired episode, available on Internet Archive, while the other a random one, available on YouTube in two separate parts.
