been seeing some story of kunning palace content so of course i started rewatching it (again) and i want to talk about the cave scene.

i see a lot of people talk about the kiss—is it hot? is it assault-y? is he crazy? did she like it?—but to me the big amazing thing about that scene is what happens after the kiss. he says “will you die here with me?” (insane) and she says “fuck no, your life is MINE and I will NOT let you die, you coward!” (also insane). xie wei has been living to die since he was a child. he assumed it, even wanted it. once his revenge is accomplished, what else does he have to live for? then here comes jiang xuening who is just as unhinged as him. he both understands her and can’t figure her out, so she becomes something else besides revenge that becomes important. BUT. before the cave scene, he is still more willing to give her up than his revenge. sure he’s on the red flag ML list but actually he’s always prepared to watch her walk away. even when he comes to the jiang home to tell her about the princess being kidnapped he was going to help her get her travel documents if that’s what she wanted. he’d gone back to dosing himself with a medicine that keeps him lucid enough for plotting but will eventually destroy his body. but then in the cave she tells him he’s not allowed to die BECAUSE SHE SAID SO and that’s the moment everything shifts for him. he starts thinking about what happens *after* all this and he wants something more. i think he wanted her before that but when you’re told your life belongs to someone else is when you become truly obsessed and all that intensity can’t hide anymore.

(and then almost the very next thing he does is reunite with the yans who are so happy to have him back, and i just really think without ning telling him not to be an idiot and reminding him of all that he would definitely yeet himself in every timeline.)

anyway this is why i have never been able to ship any other combo in this show (other than zhiyi and ning, for totally different reasons). now please excuse me while i fuck off and watch that man make a woman stab him in the gut…for love.

🚩 when ya girl witnessed you offing a few people and is scared of you. She asks 'are you going to kill me?' And Xie Wei, in a chilling tone was like 'Do you think I won't" yes totally reassuring

🚩 when ya girl asked Xie Wei for a favor for saving his life way back when and she said with this favor we're even. Being the not sane person, Xie Wei got angry and said 'are you so eager to cut ties between us?' Again very normal because he wants to be tied to her in any way possible.

🚩 when ya girl is spending too much time with this upstanding GOOD GUY, Xie Wei was absolutely ready to off him in full public view. This was only prevented because ya girl was like don't kill him and Xie Wei could never say no to her.

🚩 when ya girl is keeping her distance because she is scared, Xie Wei basically told her 'fine fine. You can run away from me, but know this no matter where you go or how far you run, I will find you.' Xie Wei, the romantic 🚩🚩

🚩 when ya girl was like I'm afraid that you will kill me so Xie Wei was like [sighed] 'alright why don't YOU just kill ME, right here and right now, with your own hands, so that you won't be scare of me anymore' He then guided her hands on the blade and stabbed himself ... seriously ... soooo extra.

no but for real, the fact that xie wei is a loving father and is rising his kids making sure they know they have total freedom to do whatever they want, really hits me hard... especially knowing how xie wei didn't have a normal and healthy childhood at all 😭 how can i not love him?
