#xie lian is the father that stepped up
muzsmoux · 18 days
Text
Xie Lian is fathering the way no father has ever fathered.
When this man took in his eldest, the guy went from unpredictable violent outbursts and chronic boredom to climbing trees, happily catching frogs and fishes the creek, and asking first if someone needs to be beat up instead of assuming. Within a span of FOUR DAYS. Checkmate autism moms it's a SKILL ISSUE.

hua cheng being terrified of spiders (and xie lian accommodating him)
-hong hong-er spots a spider and screams. he remembers how his father had trapped him in a room with them, tied up and helpless. dozens of bites, poisons mixing in his blood—it's a truly terrifying memory. xie lian notices and carefully leads hong hong-er away, silently instructing for feng xin or mu qing to get rid of it.
-wu ming is startled. he tries to hide it, but he cant help inch aeay from the spider. scoffing when he sees this, xie lian steps on the spider cruelly and digs his foot in the ground.
-san lang tried to be cool. keyword: tried. he fails, retreats, and refuses to go into the shrine until xie lian brings the spider to the forest.
-hua cheng had a strict rule in ghost city: no spiders. xie lian was amused at this obvious weakness. he was less amused when bai wuxiang used it against him.
inspired by the spider that is now suffocating, ten feet away from my room.

So I found this around, can I ask for Hua Cheng/ Xie Lian?
♥ Send a ship and I'll give you who:
- Gives nose/forehead kisses
- Gets jealous the most
- Picks the other up from the bar when they’re too drunk to drive
- Takes care of on sick days
- Drags the other person out into the water on beach day
- Gives unprompted massages
- Drives/rides shotgun
- Brings the other lunch at work
- Has the better parental relationship
- Tries to start role-playing in bed
- Embarrassingly drunk dancer
- Still cries watching Titanic
- Firmly believes in couples costumes
- Breaks the expensive gift rule during Christmas
- Makes the other eat breakfast
- Remembers anniversaries
- Brings up having kids
Oh absolutely, anon! This looks like such fun!
-Gives nose/forehead kisses: Hua Cheng, most of the time! It would be harder for Xie Lian to reach, where as Hua Cheng is at the perfect height. But Xie Lian does too, when they're sitting/laying together of course~
-Gets jealous the most: I think they're both the type to be jealous, as we see in the novel haha! Hua Cheng about Xie Lian's "trusted person," and Xie Lian about Hua Cheng's "beloved someone." Maybe Hua Cheng would express it outwardly moreso.
-Picks the other up from the bar when they’re too drunk to drive: This reminds me a lot of that scene from Book/Arc 4, with Xie Lian drunk in the gravesite! So I'd like to think Hua Cheng would be very happy to be able to help a drunk Xie Lian, whenever he could! ;o;
-Takes care of on sick days: Oh they'd both absolutely pamper and dote on each other when sick -- so it's veryyyy hard to pick!
-Drags the other person out into the water on beach day: Xie Lian
-Gives unprompted massages: Hua Cheng
-Drives/rides shotgun: Hua Cheng seems like he'd just really enjoy driving! Especially if the car is cool haha.
-Brings the other lunch at work: Xie Lian, much to everyone else's chagrin. But Hua Cheng is always over the moon about it~
-Has the better parental relationship: I guess I have to default to Xie Lian because at one point, he did have a good relationship with his parents... before tragedy. Meanwhile, Hua Cheng only knew his birth mother briefly and probably never really got to know her before she passed. And his father + step-mother were awful. ;o;
-Tries to start role-playing in bed: Both, but Hua Cheng is more forward about it, haha!
-Embarrassingly drunk dancer: Xie Lian, and Hua Cheng would adore it!!!
-Firmly believes in couples costumes: Xie Lian 😂
-Breaks the expensive gift rule during Christmas: Hua Cheng, easy!
-Makes the other eat breakfast: Hua Cheng
-Remembers anniversaries: Both! But Hua Cheng would probably be better at it in the case that Xie Lian may lose track of the days if he gets into something. Otherwise, he'd remember too!
-Brings up having kids: Oooh, I'm not sure about this one! I can see either of them for it, depending on the circumstances, haha!
Thank you for sending this in!~

Cale Henituse from Lout of the Count’s Family
Submission: An essential part of absolutely every plan he makes is to steal his enemies' stuff lmao 😂
Dragon half-blood from Lout of the Count’s Family
Submission: So much attempted murder, some successful murder presumably, kinda cannibalism (does it count as cannibalism if you eat other intelligent species?..) but consider: hes BABY (he's like 900yo) and hes a SOPPING WET KITTY CAT
Wiki Link
Fang Yuan from Reverend Insanity
Submission: He actually isn't my favorite I mostly like bai ning bing from this webnovel but please appreciate all of this man's crimes someone on Reddit compiled
Links Submitted: Link 1, Link 2, Link 3, Link 4; Wiki Link
Gu Mang from Remnants of Filth / Yuwu
Submission: It's complicated... Defected from his kingdom and became an enemy general, killing who knows how many of his former comrades. Stabbed his lover in the heart. Shipped back to original country and punished for high treason. There's the spoilery reason, but he was still branded a criminal and a traitor. Anyway, I love him, one of my favorite characters of all time, and you all need to love him, too. Stop sleeping on Yuwu, people.

He Xuan from Heaven Official’s Blessing

Ilvalino from I’ve Been Reincarnated as a Villainess’ Older Brother
Submission:
Was trained as an assassin since childhood, already did assassinations by the age of 6. In the original story - an otome game - he continues with this career until he's 17, and is known to kill people for minor offenses such as bumping into him or stepping on his foot. Moreover, in his route, he's driven insane by inner conflict and kills all the other capture targets to be alone with the heroine. In the story after titular reincarnation, he's picked up by the reincarnator/MC instead, and ultimately quits assassination altogether - although, again, he already Did Some Murder by that time.
Jiang Yexue from Remnants of Filth / Yuwu
Submission: Incest, kidnapping, mass murder, use of the Zhenlong Chess Formation, curse casting, etc.

Jun Wu from Heaven Official’s Blessing
Submission: This is MAJOR SPOILERS for Heaven Official's Blessing- but as for his crimes, just like. All his actions as Bai Wuxiang were so iconic. Jun Wu was so single mindedly focused, he manipulated so many people and brought so much death, destruction, and despair to ruin Xie Lian's life and to turn him into a Calamity like himself. It's the dedication to the bit for me, he wiped everything from his disastrous past and became emperor of heaven. Jun Wu had all of the heavenly court fooled and under his thumb for centuries and played the part of the caring mentor/father figure to Xie Lian all while gladly placing the cursed shackles on him.

Kim Kiryeo from The Hunter of the Other World Who Is Being Misunderstood
Submission:
Kiryeo is an archmage from an alien civilization who was reincarnated on Earth. During his period of adaptation he is mistaken for being one of the extremely strong S-rank hunters, even though in reality his true magic capabilities are far more meager. After failing to convince the people around him that he's actually very squishy and weak, he decides to lean into the misunderstanding and falsifies the government records stating that he is indeed ranked S. Among the many crimes he's done, some notable ones are: Commited at least 5 murders (mostly in self defence) Attempted to steal a corpse. Succesfully stole a different corpse and accidently exploded it in a research accident. Commited tax avoidance for a whooping 40 bilion Won Agreed to help the police in a raid on illegal narcotics trade because he wanted to steal them from the crime scene, which he did.  Kiryeo also calls himself a war criminal, and admits to causing near extinction of 3 separate inteligent species back on his home planet.
Ling Wen from Heaven Official’s Blessing (TGCF)
Submission: Created the Brocade Immortal, orchestrated the downfall of her predecessor, aided Jun Wu. Girlboss.

Qi Rong from Heaven Official’s Blessing / TGCF

Sha Qing/Luo Yi/Li Biqing from Sha Qing / The Killer of Killers

Novel Updates Link
Shen Jiu from The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System
Submission:
Murder, arson, child abuse... Look, some of those crimes were justified (stabbing Wu Yanzi) while some of them were absolutely not (giving a kid a flawed cultivation manual so that he'll die of qi-deviation). But Shen Jiu's life has twisted him so that he believes he's irredeemable, and he hates himself already, so he's just going to do what he wants, okay?  "First, he'd been a rat forced to swallow its anger, cringing while awaiting more beatings. Then he'd become a gutter rat, scurrying back and forth as everyone chased and hit it. No matter how he changed, he ws a rat; cowering with its tail tucked between its legs, unable to see the light; letting years slip by in vain, squandering its time and life."
Image Link
Shen Zechuan from Qiang Jin Jiu
Submissions: Character of all time. He's done a lot of crimes, but I'll just mention that one time he put a guy in a cage, poured boiling water on him, and sliced off his skin piece by piece while he was still alive.
Wiki Link
Shi Wudu from Heaven Official’s Blessing / TGCF
Submission: stole someone's fate which inevitably led to the death of that person and their family, immoral enrichment with complete disregard for other people's lives (capsizes their ships if they haven't offered him enough)
Wiki Link
Wei Wuxian from Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation
Submission: Okay, okay, I know, but the submission rules state that innocence doesn't affect eligibility. Wei Wuxian is innocent of...most of the charges against him, but he is branded a criminal by the cultivation world (and does fight against them).
Wiki Link
Wen Kexing from Faraway Wanderers
Submission: He makes murder look so sexy.
Wu Yanzi from The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System (SVSSS)

Submission: Cute snek <3 also a demon general, murderer and kidnapper
Dealer’s Choice
Choi Noah from Villain Hides His True Colors
I know pretty much no one’s read this novel, but Choi Noah was a young child who awakened the “Gamer” ability due to trauma. He literally thinks he’s in a game & is absolutely unconcerned with common sense, including the laws. He repeatedly kills “mobs” and “monsters” (usually other humans or humanoids) for “coins.” In his first life, he became the first EX-Rank villain and teams with a devil trying to take over the world, who later betrays him for being “too evil.” The story starts with/right after his death as he “resets” the game to return to age 12 and ends up becoming a hero to “win the game.”
Gwon Ohjin from I’m Not a Regressor
“If he had to ignore his conscience for the price of living, he would do it any day.” - Chapter 13
This novel starts with Lee Shinhyuk, the final Awakener of a vicious battle against “the Heavenly Demon,” choosing to regress to kill the Heavenly Demon before so many people died. To do so, he asks a powerful goddess to bestow him her stigma, and once he regresses… he dies. Right in front of the unawakened, scammer Gwon Ohjin he had met years before. Who also happens to be the Heavenly Demon and the Owner of the Black Heaven, which can devour others’ stigmas.
If you’ve put two-and-two together, you’ll know that Gwon Ohjin’s Black Heaven absorbed the stigma that no one had managed to live through being bestowed, causing said goddess to assume GWON OHJIN is a regressor. He isn’t. He doesn’t know what’s going on. But he IS a scammer, and he sure as hell isn’t going to let the goddess know he stole her stigma off of some dead guy.
Crimes: thievery, fraud, murder (and probably more lol)
Lee Sookyung from Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint
No propaganda prepared yet
Van Cromwell from Just Because My Apprentice is the Strongest, Doesn’t Mean I’m Strong Too!
Mod Propaganda: Committed fraud (pretending to be an S-rank) that’s punishable by death just to stay with his childhood best friend.
Rejected
Ballister Blackheart from Nimona
Reason: Not from a web novel

BABYSITTER XIE LIAN x PERSONAL ASSISTANT HUA CHENG PT.1 ALTERNATE UNIVERSE.
HEAVEN'S OFFICIAL BLESSING
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Xie Lian is a junior university student who loves reading poetry and works as a part-time babysitter. Born and raised in central China, he emigrated to study at one of the most prestigious universities in the West, and therefore, his financial situation is bad. he seems to be burdened by the bad luck or unfortunate situations he often gets into for helping other people. Babysitting has become his main source of income. Still, he also collects beer cans and empty liquor bottles from parties or university dormitories that he sells by weight as extra income. This situation is not very well regarded by the elitist members of his alma mater. Companions who prefer to avoid him cause of the superstition that this Junior brings bad luck. The few families he works for are very kind to him. However, he has had several accidents breaking dishes or electronics; in spite of this, the families continue with his services because of Xie Lian's kindness and patience with the children who seek him out to play or otherwise annoy him.
Feng Xin, six, and Mu Qing, two, are his favourites, two small children with quite different personalities whom he usually takes care of together. They play for a while but then tend to avoid getting along, although their parents are colleagues and good friends who, in an arrangement, take turns in the house where Xie Lian goes to look after the children together while the parents work.
It was a rather warm winter when he began to look after these two and in turn, when he met Hua Cheng, the personal assistant of Mr. Jun Wu, Mu Qing's father. The meeting was interesting for Xie Lian, and he remembered it all too well, having the feeling that it would be a nice day. He made the usual walk from the subway station to the quasi-Victorian neighbourhood hidden behind buildings and a small supermarket with the frigid air seeping through his coat, coming in through his cotton overalls.
When he arrived at his customers' home, Mu Quing was more clingy than usual with his father, who was practically already waiting for Xie Lian at the door with the child in his arms. The greeting was swift due to the businessman's haste to leave, trying to escape the crying of his son, who, being of a sensitive disposition, was entirely used to his presence. Promptly, Xie Lian took off his shoes and, at the same time, removed his coat and scarf. Seeing the little boy's eyes glaze over, he calmed and distracted him before Mu Quing started crying for real, asking if he wanted to watch something on TV or perhaps play with the toy cars. The boy readily agreed, and his babysitter gladly carried him downstairs to the play area of his house. Mu Quing spent half an hour amused by the toys and television but soon remembered his father and insisted on going upstairs. First, Xie Lian let him do so, following his childish footsteps up the stairs to the living room while he negotiated for them to return to the playing area on the lower level; if the kid agreed, he would get an oatmeal biscuit in exchange. He only broke away from the child for a few seconds to head to the kitchen and look in the snack drawer for the small yellow cellophane packet with two oatmeal biscuits; he was sure that as soon as he saw the sweet, he would go for that instead of looking for someone who wasn't home. ⸺ "Hey…where are you going brat? "-. A deep voice echoed up the stairs as the boy watched intently as a pale, jet-haired man in black clothes descended the stairs to sit down three steps before touching the ground, avoiding Mu Quing's to climb upstairs. The boy looked at him with a certain wariness, a mixture of fear, perhaps courage. Still, in his childish bravery, he only mumbled: ⸺ "I want Daddy."- The long-haired man gave the infant a sly smile and ran his fingertips over the thin brown hair of the boy, who showed a certain insecurity at that touch. ⸺ "You must leave your father alone for a few minutes; he will come to you sooner or later"-. Was his reply as he stood up and walked down to the main level of the house, making Mu Quin move away from the stairs, seeking the protection of his babysitter, making the man in black aware of the younger man's presence. Xie Lian thought they were alone; he had no idea there was another person in the house with them, but it didn't seem to be someone who had broken into the property. He remembered those dense biker boots next to where he had left his humble dirty sneakers at the entrance; they didn't look familiar or like Mr. Jun Wu's style, so this stranger was the owner. Xie Lian managed to smile shyly at the mysterious man, his way of saying hello, as he tried to distract the infant again and take him to the house's lower floor.
It was a somewhat futile attempt, but he watched as the man picked up some toys to distract the child.
Two are better than one against a spoilt child; instead, a child in the terrible two years when his tantrums and crying are most frequent, and Xie Liang was grateful how this stranger took the time to distract Mu Quing by blocking the stairs and his deep voice asked what show they would watch on TV, Sesame Street? Peppa pig? Paw Patrol? All the questions were answered negatively by the boy who unwillingly went downstairs to the playroom being guided by the hand of Xie Lian, who had begun to eat one of the oatmeal cookies, leaving the other in the hand of Mu Quing, who more than hungry was watching the guy and babbling in a way that seemed to scold him to return the office upstairs. It was obvious how much the child was repulsed by the presence of the guy who came from the second floor, and this was strange to the college student as he seemed like a nice person. Maybe it was the tattoos and the black nail polish, but the boy looked at him with distrust and suspicion; he barely interacted with the strange dynamic that the man had made an effort to establish by giving him toys that Mu Quing tossed to Xie Liang or changing the subject to make the little boy not think about peeking for his father. It was a few steps down to the playroom, but Mu Quing was stubborn and beginning to get exasperated at not getting what he wanted. Halfway between the exit door and the stairs down to the playroom, he would stop shouting for his father; in his childish mind, he had forgotten to see him walk out the door. Xie Lian was sweetly asking him to continue down to the playroom, trying to convince him, but the negative effect of the stranger sitting on the steps had more weight on Mu Quing to obey, and this seemed to amuse the man. He smiled at the boy as he stroked the back of his neck, barely grazing his fingernails on Mu Quing's neck as he lowered him down along with Xie Lian, who stood in front of them, making sure his small steps didn't trip him up by taking his hand. Chasing the boy away seemed to be his specialty as he followed them into the basement and swung down like a spider, trying to make the most theatrical moves possible to force Mu Quing down. It had worked, as Mu Quin was now the one most anxious to come down. To this, Xie Lian quietly thanked him, seeing how the boy had remembered that he had brought a biscuit and began to eat it on the ground floor. They both lay down on the carpet using the furniture as back support and once settled, Xie Lian took one last look upstairs, connecting eyes for a fleeting moment with the stranger who waved goodbye in a friendly gesture.
⸺"I'm upstairs if you need me."⸺ was the last thing the man whispered before climbing back up to what Xie Lian thought were just rooms, but apparently, there was also an office. Mu quing had become absorbed in the colourful images of the cartoons that filled the space with their shrill voices presented on the television, visibly calmer to which the older man rummaged in his right pocket for his mobile phone, a somewhat old model with a starred corner but it worked perfectly. In the chore of controlling Mu Quing's tantrum, he hadn't noticed the text message from his employer, the boy's father:
"My Assistant Hua Cheng is upstairs; ask him for anything you need."

A Demolition Boy & his Cryptid BF by kewltie
Bakugou of the Demolition Squad is famous for running one of the most popular Youtube channels on the web that regularly blow shit up and jumped off a perfectly good building for shit and giggles. He's also famous for his Cryptid BF™, never appearing on camera except for a few bodyshots and all information on him is kept locked up tighter than Fort Knox, therefore drawing all sort of attention and curiosity toward his mysterious boyfriend.
Deku from Deku Explains is a hopeless chatterbox who is known for uploading 20-30 minutes video that talked about his favorite shows and comics and have one of the most devoted following on Youtube. He also can't seem to shut up about his boyfriend Kacchan, who regularly make his presence on the channel as a disembodied voice.
They should theoretically have nothing in common except a shared platform to host their content and an army of fans with an endless curiosity and devotion to their Youtubers. Vidcon is where we lay our scene and the internet is about to get a rude wake up call.

“Baba,” A-Yuan is saying, tugging happily on his father’s hand. “Wei-laoshi is here!”
“Yes, I see.” Lan Wangji dips his head in Wei Ying’s direction, then begins to gently steer A-Yuan back into the house. “Let’s step aside so that he may come in. Wei Ying, thank you for making time in your schedule.”
“Oh, it was no trouble,” Wei Ying says, waving a hand. It was: he had to rearrange two lessons with other students. “Really, I’m happy to do it.” He realizes he’s still kneeling on the porch, and clambers to his feet. “Besides, money is exchanged for goods and services, right? Xie Lian’s eyes flicked halfway up the length of San Lang’s body, sitting rather stiffly on the sofa. He looked kind of awkward, to be honest. Then again, awkwardness was probably a bit of a given when you were sex-coaching the flatmate you’d only known for two weeks.

The Tragedy of Qi Rong :
Let me start by saying despite all the things Qi Rong did ( and yes, his loud cursing included ), I've never found him a detestable character, but more of a pathetic - and to an extent - a tragic one . I've talked before about the similarities between Xuan Jie and Hua Hua, and how MXTX used her character to defend Hua cheng's feelings and behavior, by giving is a real example of what true obsession and stalking looks like, and i feel like she did the same thing with Qi rong and Xie Lian, only in this case, not to defend Xie Lian's Behavior, but more so to shed light on his less attractive side for the lack of better words, and to an extent his arrogant past self.
Let me start by saying that first of all, "this ancestor" is definetly not the dumb, naive person people portrays him to be. Granted, he has tons of flaws, but stupidity is definitely not one of them. He never failed, not once, to directly see through a lot of characters flaws, and even predict the novel's twists. For example, in book 2, he was the first one to point out to Xie Lian that he needs to properly "educate his servants'' ( referring to Mu Qing ), as he can see that it will come a day where - Mu Qing - will bite the hand that fed him, and use Xie Lian as stepping stone to rise higher than him. He also stated that Hong Hong Er was no normal child, very strong and tenacious and that he only looked pathetic in front of Xie Lian. He foresaw the fall of Xian le before Yong'An rebelion, recognized Hua hua's Ashes when no one else did, called jun Wu a faker, Pei su a leg-hugging dog, orchestrated the gilded banquet massacre, Xuan Ji's whole bride scheme and let's be real here : he become -a near- devastation.
Initially Qi Rong is not, or at least was not a heartless cruel person, but the environment he grew up in made him see only the bad in people, as well as having an elitist and mob mentality. In book 2 we got a little glimpse on his backstory : Qi Rong was born, and raised in an abusive home ( his father was a drunk abusive father and husband ), after returning to the palace, it was clearly indicated that everyone looked down at him and his mother and indirectly isolated them. Soon after, his mother will pass away in a gruesome way, and he will be raised by the Queen : Xie Lian's mother, to fulfil her sister's last wish,This little detail will come off handy later, to show case that Qi Rong was never wanted by anybody, directly or indirectly except by his mother and Gu Zi, or at least that's how he saw things. I mean even the king had his objections but did tolerate him eventually because...well, he is from royal blood after all. The book states clearly that Qi Rong, and despite the queen's good intentions, spoiled him greatly, and never dared to punish him for anything he did, as a respect for her sister's memory. This way of doing things, plus Qi rong's trauma, his hatred for his Yong'An "commoner" blood, and his privileged background, made him a person with no understanding for what "consequences" and "taking accountability" means, as well as becoming a bully trying to erase his commoner Yong'An heritage, by only focusing on his royal title and what comes with it : as the Prince Xiao Jing he can do whatever he wants, and nothing and no one can say anything about it.
As a Child, Qi Rong also had a deep admiration and devotion to his "Cousin Crown Prince '', since he was the first person to openly defend him and help him as a little boy from the bullies who pranked him. And his Devotion was highlighted throughout the entire book 2, he even begged the Queen to gift him a carriage for his birthday so he can use it to bring his cousin crown prince on it back home ( not gonna lie, this part made feel bad for Qi Rong y'all ! ) , and waited days in front of the mountain where xie Lian was training, without having any knowledge when Xie Lian will decide to visit home, as long as he gets to be with his cousin Crown Prince, he won't mind waiting for days .Though, Xie Lian never treated Qi Rong badly, he never treated him good either. he didn't pay any attention to him, and usually when he did, it's either to scold him or criticize something he did ( rightfully so ), but throughout the entire book 2, Xie Lian never took time or the initiative to thank Qi rong for his devotion, and maybe take him under his wing and properly educate him, since Qi Rong only listened to Xie Lian.
Qi Rong also was described as being this tasteless Ghost, who copies others in a very cheap way. In My opinion, Qi Rong copying the other two Ghost kings is not a sign of lack of taste or whatnot, but it's an indirect message to showcase how much  Qi Rong was craving acceptance as well as how deep his inferiority complex is running: if raining blood will make others like him and look at him with respect then he will do it, even if it comes off tasteless, it's still a bloody rain after all.
And speaking of inferiority complex and acceptance, I think Qi Rong's love for Xie Lian turned to pure hatred because he truly and genuinely believed that Xie Lian cared for him for who he is, that's why he defended him from the other kids, and that's why he helped him with his prayer, Unlike others who looks at him with condescension, and only treats him with a fake respect due to his title as prince Xiao Jing. And so Xie Lian's constantly ignoring him, scolding him, criticising him, never showing any signs of gratefulness to all his efforts, made him sink even more in the idea that he will never be good enough to anyone, not even to his Cousin Crown Prince, with the "white lotus heart". At the end of his arc, he sacrificed himself to save Gu Zi, just like he would wait days in front of the mountain to escort Xie Lian back home : he finally found someone who loved him, and i mean genuinely loved him and accepted him : not out of duty like the queen , not as Prince Xiao Jin like the palace attendance, not as the green ghost like Xuan Ji and the minions following him, but as the loud, cursing, crad, tasteless, human eating Qi Rong. Of course, we can argue that Gu Zi was just a child, with the innocence of children. and Qi Rong was possessing his father. Nevertheless, Qi Rong was a father figure for Gu Zi for a long time, and although he tried to get rid of him on my occasions, and even threatened to eat him, Gu Zi always followed him. We can all agree that our parents are not perfect, but we love them regardless ( yes I know, they don't threaten to eat us lol ) and Gu Zi is no different.
I feel like Qi Rong was just a more tragic version of Xie Lian's desire to be loved and accepted, and MXTX delivered that beautifully since i never disliked his character throughout the whole novel, i was even mad at Xie Lian in some parts of how he treated Qi Rong, that's how i knew he is a well written character.

A Meta-kinda post on why Qi Rong is the way he is (and why I will defend him for it)
TGCF spoilers for Qi Rong's backstory in Book 2 (vol 2 & 3 English, I believe).
Qi Rong is not an inherently crass and horrible person, and I don't understand how people can truly believe him to be so?
Like, I understand not liking him because he's rude, mean, vulgar, bitter, and stinky (that's his charm) or whatever reason someone might have not to like him. That's your prerogative to do so, but regardless of liking him or not, it doesn't change the fact that Qi Rong was not born a despicable person. It's not his nature.
I don't understand how people don't realize he's quite literally a product of his own environment growing up, and how he was repeatedly failed by every single person in his life at every step of the way.
He was five when he and his mother fled back to the Xianle capital from his abusive father who made them live in a doghouse-like shed, who abused them for Qi Rong's whole life up to that point.
He was five.
And you know what name he was given when they arrived? The name Xianle gave him, that's supposed to reflect him as a person? "Small mirror."
They named him small mirror, as if he were a reflection of his Yong'An father. As if he were his father. And then they talked about his bad behavior and how he was crass and rude?
He was bullied by other kids, who he asked for help and they took advantage of his innocent gullibility and taught him to pray for his mother and his own death.
He idolized his cousin for stopping that and defending him, but besides that one moment, when did Xie Lian ever do something for Qi Rong for his own good? Xie Lian thought of him as a responsibility, something he had to deal with so no one else had to deal with him because Qi Rong only listened to him.
His aunt and uncle gave him things because it was easier than teaching him the right way to act, and then complained when he didn't know how to act properly. They neglected to try and teach him, instead foisting their responsibility of caring for him and teaching him (which Qi Rong's aunt willingly accepted from her dying sister) onto Xie Lian.
No one who was supposed to help him ever tried to teach Qi Rong how he was supposed to act, what was appropriate and what wasn't, no one ever tried to realize he needed help learning how to act, because until he arrived at the palace, all he'd ever seen was his father abusing him and his mother, and then when he did arrive, everyone belittled and berated him for what he should have somehow inherently known? As a five year old?
Like, he was five, and they assumed he'd be like his father.
He was five, and they set him up to fail. And then surprise! He fails, because he had a twisted support from the beginning and no one bothered to help correct it.
TL;DR — Qi Rong is not crass/evil/disgusting/despicable by nature. Instead, he is a product of his environment, a product of neglect, and the result of an entire society setting him up to fail from the start, and then acting all high and mighty, righteous, "I always knew he'd turn out like that" when he did.
So yeah, Qi Rong is my tiny, evil, stinky, garbage poopoo man, but he's mine.

Thank you for the request, @bout-to-snap <3
“This is why I don’t trust him!” Mu Qing fumed. “He’s literally the Lord of the Ghost Realm, Your Highness…”
Xie Lian allowed a small, relaxed smile to grace his lips. He was mediating a fight between Mu Qing, Feng Xin, and Hua Cheng for what seemed like the thousandth time. Though newly renovated, Puqi Shrine was still too small for these massive quarrels, and Xie Lian dreaded the property damage that would ensue if their swords were drawn.
Given all that had happened – the destruction of the heavens and defeat of Jun Wu – why were these three still at each other’s throats?
“I thought we were past this,” Xie Lian sighed. “We don’t get to see each other all the time, so can we please not fight?”
“Exactly, we don’t see get to see each other all the time, so can’t we talk to you in private?” Feng Xin said, fidgeting a little.
Xie Lian looked confused. “About what?”
“You expect me to walk away when you’ve just called me the scum of the earth?” Hua Cheng said coolly, examining his nails. “Gege, these servants are no good.”
“We’re not his servants!” Mu Qing exclaimed. Xie Lian thought it sounded like he was about to say “anymore” at the end, but cut off his speech abruptly, making the outburst awkward and clunky.
“Are you sure?” Hua Cheng asked skeptically. “Because when you’re with him, it’s like 800 years never happened, you can be his ever-most-loyal-servants again. The roleplaying is disgusting, and doesn’t absolve you from guilt.”
Xie Lian sensed the atmosphere in the shrine shift. He stepped forward again and raised his hands placatingly. “San Lang – “
“And what would you know?” Feng Xin demanded. “You can’t possibly understand what we’ve been through, at the time you were merely a mortal child.”
“I understand that you abandoned Dianxia when he was most vuln –“
“San Lang,” Xie Lian said. Hua Cheng’s lips instantly froze at the warning in Xie Lian’s tone; it was a lilt and a dangerous flavor that Xie Lian hardly used on anyone, and never on Hua Cheng.
“…”
“Why can’t they know, gege?” Hua Cheng asked softly. “Don’t you think they deserve to know? Frankly, their ignorance offends me.”
Feng Xin and Mu Qing had fallen silent, too, their faces both a few shades lighter. The word abandon seemed to always have that effect on them. Then Feng Xin regained his voice. “Ignor – know what? Taizi Dianxia, just what…”
Xie Lian had folded his arms, his mouth drawn into a line. “It’s old history,” he sighed. “There’s no need to bring things like this up. Do not shame me.”
“Shame you? When that came to visit you, he dismissed your fears as insan –“
Hua Cheng’s voice cut off for a moment, and the temperature in Puqi Shrine seemed to drop. Because, at that moment, an expression entirely foreign to Xie Lian flitted across his face: rage. Neither Mu Qing nor Feng Xin had seen him make that expression since his third ascension, and it didn’t suit him well.
It was gone as soon as it arrived, and Xie Lian’s characteristically peaceful smile returned in its stead. However, the faces of his two ex-subordinates were already white as sheets. Hua Cheng stepped toward, placing a hand on Xie Lian’s shoulder as if to hold him up.
“Dianxia, are you mad… at us?” Feng Xin whispered.
Xie Lian looked at him strangely, as if he had asked a very bizarre question indeed. “No… Not you.”
Hua Cheng snorted, as if he was thinking, too bad. Xie Lian’s face was soft. “In any case, I’m quite tired, so I think I will retire for the night. Please make yourselves at home.”
“Wh – you can’t – after –“ Mu Qing sputtered.
Feng Xin’s eyes were round. “Dianxia, does that mean… That time with White No-Face, when we were on the run… Was it really…?”
Xie Lian had started towards his chambers, but after being addressed, his shoulders tightened infinitesimally. Then, he turned back to the trio, his face still serene. “Yes.”
As if he’d been punched in the gut, Feng Xin slouched over. Mu Qing looked baffled.
“I didn’t tell you this because I knew you’d blame yourself. Yet, in the end, the only one who sinned was me. So, please, do not inquire further into this matter.”
With a nod and another smile, Xie Lian vanished into the back room, anxious to escape the conversation.
Feng Xin and Mu Qing were bursting with indescribable emotion. Some small part of Feng Xin fumed at Xie Lian for leaving them without explaining, but the rest of him just wallowed in a torrent of guilt, doubt, and self-questioning.
If the Taizi Dianxia wouldn’t tell them the truth, who would? Xie Lian had been abandoned with only his parents, who were long dead, so who besides him even knew what happened? The only people must be Jun Wu himself, and –
“Don’t look at me,” Hua Cheng rolled his eyes, leaning lazily against a chair. “I’m not going behind gege’s back for some backstabbing servants.”
“You’re the one who said we deserve to know,” Mu Qing argued.
“So? It’s gege’s story to tell, and he said no, so no.”
“How do you even know?”
Hua Cheng shrugged. “I was just ghost fire at the time. I had to watch.”
The corners of his eyes tightened, and a murderous look crossed his face. Unlike Xie Lian, his malice wasn’t bottled away, but instead broadcast for all to see.
“Watch what?” Feng Xin cried in anguish. “Why must you torture us?”
Hua Cheng snickered. “If only you knew your own irony.”
With that, he straightened and glided in Xie Lian’s direction, back towards the sleeping chambers.
“We – we’ll be back tomorrow!” Feng Xin and Mu Qing shouted at his receding back. Hua Cheng shrugged again.
//
That night, Hua Cheng was holding Xie Lian in his arms, and casually said, “Gege, this is what you did with Lang Qianqiu, too.” It wasn’t an accusation – it was never an accusation, just a comment.
Xie Lian exhaled. “I know.”
Hua Cheng’s voice grew husky. “Isn’t it enough that you suffered alone then, why must you be alone now, too? Why must you save everyone secretly, then endure their collective ridicule?” Then, “Is keeping it a secret truly doing anyone good?”
Xie Lian was silent. “Maybe I don’t have a good reason,” he finally said. “I don’t like thinking about it, really. I’m weak.”
“…”
“Although, looking back on it, I can’t believe that cute little ghost fire was you,” Xie Lian laughed. “You’d barely popped up and you already had a little cult following, so adorable!”
Hua Cheng grinned, but it was pained, like he couldn’t remember that period of his existence without discomfort. He said nothing, but his grip around Xie Lian tightened, like he was afraid of letting go.
Xie Lian noticed, and, after a beat of silence, shut his eyes. “I’ll think about it, okay?”
//
Feng Xin and Mu Qing would not give up. Day after day, they visited Xie Lian, demanding answers, so after months of heckling, Xie Lian finally agreed to explain what had happened all those years ago. When Xie Lian, Hua Cheng, Feng Xin, and Mu Qing sat down in Paradise Manor, Hua Cheng started talking first, trying to alleviate Xie Lian’s burden.
“…He’d wailed and screamed and cried and begged for mercy, but the people, having deemed him a sinner, continued without hesitation. Of course, his sinfulness was merely an excuse to save their own skin…”
“…After one hundred fatal strikes, Dianxia laid on his own altar, disfigured beyond recognition. Nothing more than a pile of flesh.”
Feng Xin was not the type to cry. So, when his eyes grew wet and then started streaming, Xie Lian hurriedly waved off Hua Cheng’s stone-faced words.
“Feng Xin, this was hundreds of years ago,” Xie Lian assured him, patting his shoulder. “It’s not sad anymore. Also, I’ve endured worse since then.”
This aggravated Feng Xin even further, and he looked like he wanted to cry some more. “I just can’t… when I imagine it, I can’t help it…”
“Trust me, whatever you’re imagining, it was five million times worse in real time,” Hua Cheng muttered darkly. He stared at Xie Lian with an odd expression, before languidly pulling him into his embrace.
Feng Xin looked like he wanted to rebuke, but in the end, could not. Thus, he motioned for the story to continue.
Xie Lian skimmed over his recovery period, the reformation of his flesh, and Feng Xin’s departure, but before he was in the clear, he was interrupted.
“So that’s why you asked me to leave?” Feng Xin said incredulously.
“There was no need to pull you down with me,” Xie Lian murmured.
“I thought you’d gone insane,” Feng Xin mumbled, nauseated. “I told your mother and father… I left you…”
Describing what happened to his parents was even harder, and when he finally got to saying how he’d put his own head in the noose, eyes filling with blood and collarbone cracking, Mu Qing jumped up.
“DAMN IT,” he roared, picking up a glass and shattering it against the nearest wall. “Damn it, damn it, damn it, Dianxia! What the actual fuck?”
Xie Lian peered at him. “Please don’t break San Lang’s things,” he tried.
“WHAT DO I FUCKING CARE? FUCK, FUCK, FUCK, TAIZI DIANXIA, HOW COULD YOU KEEP SOMETHING LIKE THIS FROM US?” Mu Qing was panting, and Feng Xin was staring off into space, eyes empty. “WE COULD’VE HELPED! IF I’D HAVE KNOWN, I’D HAVE –“
“Come back?” Xie Lian questioned lightly. “Followed me until the end?”
There was a deafening silence.
“No… I wanted you both to break free,” Xie Lian said. “You had a future.”
“SO DID YOU!” Feng Xin cried, broken from his trance. “Why… why did all this… why must it happen to you?”
“For that, I have no answer,” Xie Lian said. “But, if it had to happen to anyone, I’m glad it happened to me.”
Feng Xin and Mu Qing looked like they’d been shattered into a million pieces. Xie Lian said ruefully, “This is why I didn’t want to tell you.”
Mu Qing rushed forward. “GODDAMN IT, THE FACT THAT I DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT IT IS EVEN WORSE! WHY DIDN’T YOU ASK FOR HELP? YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO USE US, RELY ON US, THAT WAS OUR FUCKING JOB AND WE…”
“At the time, you were ganging up with Middle Court lackeys to chase him out of spiritual lands,” Hua Cheng remarked icily, pulling Xie Lian closer to him.
Mu Qing appeared stupefied, like Hua Cheng had just slapped him. “San Lang!” Xie Lian admonished. Mu Qing sat back down.
Both Feng Xin and Mu Qing both looked like they wanted to protest more, but Xie Lian continued with the story before they could. When he described donning the white mask and preparing to unleash the Human Face Disease, both of them seemed to hold their breath. Hua Cheng described his rebirth as a ghost soldier, following Xie Lian’s commands but never believing that he would truly commit the atrocity.
Feng Xin was regarding him with something that almost looked like newfound respect, but Mu Qing turned his head.
The rest was all downhill from there. He described laying on the pavement for days on end, and the one farmer who’d salvaged his faith in human goodness.
“To anyone else, thousands of onlookers ignoring your pain and suffering before one did anything shouldn’t reinforce your faith in anything…” Mu Qing muttered.
Xie Lian pressed forward, practically sprinting through the unleashed Human Face Disease, taking the brunt of the curses, and then Hua Cheng dying for him for the second time. He talked about ascending into heaven, and asking Jun Wu to punish him for his wrongdoings using banishment and cursed shckles.
“…DIANXIA?!?” Feng Xin gasped. “IT WASN’T A MURDEROUS RAMPAGE?”
“Nope!” Xie Lian said cheerily, relief crossing his face as if he was pleased to be done talking.
Mu Qing’s face darkened, and he started swearing again. “I WAS FUCKING WONDERING HOW SOMEONE AS TALENTED AS YOU SPENDS 800 YEARS TRYING TO ASCEND, IT WAS ON FUCKING PURPOSE? FUCKING FUCK, I WANT TO STRANGLE SOMETHING! SOMEONE GIVE ME SOMETHING TO BREAK!” He clomped off in a random direction.
Feng Xin’s face looked shadowed over, too. “Here I was wondering how you suddenly had such bad luck. As Crown Prince, you’d never had something so egregious. Now, learning that you asked for it… it all makes sense.” His hands were clenched into tight fists, and his words turned into cries. “Why… why… why… for 800 years, we felt… we waited, we were waiting, for something, and we thought maybe you’d died, or gone crazy, or vanished… We…”
Xie Lian had approached him, and put both hands on his shoulders. It was an old, but familiar gesture, and Feng Xin’s heart immediately squeezed with pain and regret. He was at a loss for words, and everything seemed wretched.
“Feng Xin, I understand your anguish,” Xie Lian said softly. “But I became very close to becoming that thing which I swore to destroy. And, to be honest, at that point I didn’t care much for godhood. I lost everything because of godhood. What I couldn’t stand to lose was myself, not to that monster, not to anyone. So, please understand. I’m sorry I hurt you, but it was necessary.”
“WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE SO FUCKING GOOD?” Mu Qing roared, coming to stand next to Feng Xin. “WHY CAN’T YOU EVER BE SELFISH?”
Xie Lian chuckled, and Mu Qing covered his mouth, as if the words had escaped by their own volition. “…I wasn’t being good, I was scared.”
Mu Qing swore more. Feng Xin, on the other hand, fell to his knees, his shoulders trembling. So, Xie Lian acted on impulse, pulling Mu Qing down to the ground, too. Xie Lian then wrapped one arm around Feng Xin, and the other around Mu Qing, enveloping the both of them in a hug.
“I’m sorry,” Xie Lian murmured again, trying to control their trembling. He couldn’t tell, at this point, if it was only Feng Xin, or if it was Mu Qing too.
“We failed. I failed,” Feng Xin said, and his voice was raw with agony. “Why are you apologizing?”
“It wasn’t fair to either of you… but I loved you very much, and it was like you were shackled to a man descending to the bottom of a lagoon. If I didn’t remove your chains, you would’ve drowned too.”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, holy shit, I’m so sorry,” Feng Xin said, almost gasping through the words. He looked as though someone had drawn a sword across his Adam’s apple, and he was choking through the blood. “Taizi Dianxia, I’m sorry. I failed.”
“Don’t be so damn self-sacrificing, Your Highness.” It was Mu Qing, this time, and he wasn’t struggling against the embrace. “Every single fucking time. Disgusting. How can we even stop you? Something like this. Damnit.”
“I’m a bit tougher than I look,” Xie Lian assured him. “Drowning is no big deal. Pain will subside. Embarrassment will fade. And look, I’m very happy now.”
From somewhere far away, Hua Cheng laughed slightly. However, even Mu Qing and Feng Xin, who weren’t well acquainted with him, could hear that it was laced with pain, too.
“I’m sorry. I wanted to stay with you,” Feng Xin said. “I wanted to stay, I trusted you unequivocally, you’re my world. But it scared me…”
Xie Lian smiled. “I know. You didn’t have to say anything. Ever since you came to help me at Yu Jun Mountain, I’ve known. And I’m grateful.”
“Stop being so damn forgiving.” Mu Qing’s voice was muffled by Xie Lian’s robes.
“Why? I forgive you.” Mu Qing and Feng Xin seemed to collapse in on themselves. So Xie Lian repeated, “I forgive you.”
No one moved for a long time. The trembling intensified. “You’re so damn forgiving,” Mu Qing mumbled. “It doesn’t mean a thing…”
And yet, they were not willing to break away.
Even after 800 years, Mu Qing and Feng Xin didn’t think that they would ever get used to being dazzled by the Crown Prince.

E’ming, who tried so enthusiastically to offer itself up but ended up so blatantly rejected, weepingly hopped back to Hua Cheng’s side. Hua Cheng didn’t even spare it a look before he smacked it with a backhand slap.
“What are you crying about? Isn’t it because you’re useless? Trash!”
E’ming fell flat on the ground like a piece of unwanted scrap metal, like it dropped dead from that strike. Xie Lian didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, and immediately picked E’ming up in his arms and stroked it a few times.
“Nothing of the sort. Don’t listen to him, you’re not trash, you’re very useful!”
Pei Ming couldn’t stand the mood in the circle anymore. He stepped out, standing at the boundary, slowly pulling out his sword once more.
oh! you hit e'ming? you backhand e'ming like the scrap metal? OH!! OH!! KILN for father!!!! kiln for father for ten years!!!!!

A Morning of Fallen Stars by constellationqueen  (100K, Mature)
It's common knowledge in the Heavens that gods are not supposed to interact with humans outside of answering prayers, and they're definitely not supposed to show up in person and talk to a child. But Xie Lian isn't afraid of breaking rules that he's already broken, so he does it anyway. In fact, he takes it one step further and brings the child home.
Basically, Wei Wuxian's parents died in a night hunt when he was five, but he ends up being adopted a year later by a god and his ghost king husband, so it's not all bad.... In fact, it's probably better than it should be.
(Welcome to one of the rare times I try to avoid angst as much as possible. Wei Wuxian deserves happiness and I will give it to him.)

Love Like You by HisRedEmpress (72K, Teen, WIP - 10/15)
(Hualian-Adopted!WWX, Post-Canon for TGCCF, Kid!WWX, Found Family, Love At First Sight, Heavenly Officials and Ghost Kings alike wrapped in Wei Ying's fingers,
Wei Wuxian is spoiled, much more than jiejie's betrothed, Jin Zixuan. The difference between the two is Jin Zixuan is arrogant about it, while Wei Wuxian is oblivious to the boundless extent he can get away with everything he does.
Jiang Cheng is so thankful Wei Wuxian sees him and jiejie as his family.
With that, Jiang Cheng can be assured that if Wei Wuxian decides he wants to have the world, he and jiejie will sparingly be safe when his Supreme Ghost King father and Heavenly Martial Emperor father, not to mention his other Ghost King uncle and grandfather, heavenly official uncles and aunts plus wrath level ghost uncles and aunts, would turn heaven and earth upside down just to give him what he wants.
(or the one where baby Wei Ying is adopted by Hualian)
let this soul be your whisper by merthurlin  (19K, Teen, WIP - 5/?)
(Hualian-Adopted!WWX, Post-Siege of the Burial Mounds, Post-Canon for TGCF, Kid!WWX, Found Family)
“I think…” Xie Lian says slowly, not taking his eyes off the bag. “I think I knew this person. Who this soul used to be.”
He can hear Hua Cheng suck in a breath. “Gege, maybe it’s better if you don’t—“
But Xie Lian ignores him, and reaches out with one trembling hand to touch the bag. A second passes, and then another, and Xie Lian almost lets out a breath in relief, before he feels something in the bag reaching back.
“A-Ying?”
-
Once upon a time, Xie Lian took in an orphan, and gave him a home and a family. Twenty years and a godhood later, he finds he still has more in him to give.

Hi, nyerus.....If you don't mind me asking, who are your favorite MXTX characters (top 5 from each novel)? And why? I'm sorry if you've answered this question before.
Thank you so much for asking! I would love to! (Apologies for the delay, and also for how long this is lol....)
TGCF
1.) Xie Lian: I could write forever about why I love him, but XL is just a really great character who subverted my expectations. He's gentle and compassionate, but also funny and snarky on the inside. His character arc is the classic hero's journey but told out of order. So we meet him when he's already wise and world-weary, then get to see what he was like before, and how he finishes his journey later on. He's extremely inspiring, to show that our choices and our actions are what make us, and ultimately no one can take those from us.
2.) Hua Cheng: This is no surprise! I also just adore HC for being a very intense character! He's completely devoted to XL and that zealotry is very unique in a character. He's 100%, not 50, not 75. While he has a lot of relateable aspects, this part of him is utterly fantastical, on the level only myth and fable can achieve--which tracks. After all, he isnt a Ghost King for nothing. In the story, he is the embodiment of the purest devotion, no strings attached.
3.) He Xuan: I actually like him for the same reasons as HC! He too is a walking fable, only instead of devotion, he represents vengence. (They're actually like foils of each other, which is quite neat.) I really adore his arc, and how murky his whole character is. It tells a cautionary tale of how sometimes, our worst enemy--the one who makes us most miserable--is often ourselves. SWD wronged him greviously, but HX's obsession with vengence ultimately prevented him from getting the peace and recompense he wanted in the end. Absolutely stellar storytelling.
4.) Mei Nianqing: While I often question his motives and methods, he is still a really good character. Caught between wanting to be a mentor and protector to XL, but still loving (platonically or romantically, that's up to you) JW. He's the only father figure in XL's life that actually took him seriously, even if he did have to come around to it. But ultimately, he was proud of who XL became even before he ascended. He was just terrified of XL drawing the attention of the one man he shouldn't--and did. However his belief in superstition and fear of Hong Hong-er also makes sense, even if it's sad. MNQ is also just a quirky and fun dude lol.
5.) Mu Qing: I really like how complicated and murky MQ's is in terms of his inner turmoil. I'm somewhat similar to him in the way he thinks, and it's real work not to make things worse for myself by expecting the worse. His background makes him naturally suspicious of... basically everyone, all the time, and it's honestly understandable. Ultimately, he does understand that you can't make assumptions about people's intentions by projecting your own insecurities onto them--which I think is something everyone can relate to. I really like his subtle journey of self-realization and self-forgiveness, and he ends up far better for it.
MDZS
1.) Lan Wangji: I love the fact that LWJ was just so ready to Night Hunt himself to death upon the loss of his beloved. As you can tell, I really like complicated characters who have extreme traits, haha! That being said, I just also really like his stoicism and reliability.
2.) Wei Wuxian: Naturally, it's hard not to love WWX! He decided "yeah maybe the ends do justify the means" and went for it. To us, he is the hero. To the regular people of the world? Whose ancestors were dug up and disturbed to be used by the Yiling Laozu? His blackened reputation is not without cause! (Like... JGY literally has done more positive and helpful things for regular people than Wangxian, but those metas already exist lol.) Once again, his gray morality is what makes him so damn good, and can be debated at length!
3.) Jiang Cheng: JC gets a bad rep, but oh boy he doesn't make things easy for himself at all. However if I was in his position, I probably would be much worse off. He lost EVERYTHING, and still trudged on because there were people who depended on him. His hatred of the Wens also makes sense in the context that... that's often how humans react to and process extreme trauma. We find something to blame and *waves at literally every major conflict since the dawn of time.* (His rumored torture of innocent people due to that is reprehensible, of course, but given that MDZS is a book about how rumors can make or break someone's life... we should take that line with a grain of skepticism, much like all other hearsay.) He's not typically the type of character I like, but I found him really interesting to read.
4.) Jiang Yanli: I really love JYL, who decided to be the emotional backbone of her family from the time she was a child. It was an undue and extremely heavy burden to bear, but she did all of it without complaint. That's strength. I think many elder siblings can relate to her having to step up and be the third parent, when the actual adults fail at it.
5.) Wen Qing: I really like her arc in the novel, where she makes some of the hardest decisions anyone will ever have to make, over and over and over again. I don't typically love very "rough" characters, but she has ever right to be that way (and it makes sense for her character, and isn't just a tacked-on character trait like hair color or eye color in a CC), and honestly I want to marry her very seriously.
SVSSS
1.) Luo Binghe: Probably the most misunderstood main character of all of MXTX's works. LBH is neither truly a crybaby nor is he a ruthless maniac. He's right in the middle, in the valley of misanthropy. And yet, he knows just how to use his charisma to get his way. Cunning and devious, intelligent and ruthless. Meanwhile, he craves love and intimacy--something he could only ever dream of.
2.) Shen Qingqiu (Shen Yuan): Extremely refreshing to see an transmigrator know how to handle transmigration almost flawlessly. (Me reading/watching other works with this trope and wanting to tear my hair out at the protags = me sympathizing on a personal level with SQQ.) This also proves to be SQQ's fatal flaw!! His knowledge of the novel is both a boon and a obstacle to him, and prevents him from understanding the other characters as people until he lets go of his pre-conceived notions. And of course, his snarky as heck inner dialogue is amazing.
3.) Liu Qingge: I don't actually even know why I love LQG as much as I do. He's just neat.
4.) Tianlang-Jun: Honestly same goes for TLJ. He's just great though, and I have a blast reading about him. He wanted to see the good in humanity, and ultimately comes around after writing them off.
5.) Yue Qingyuan: He's a fascinating character. Harmless on the outside, but a quagmire on the inside. His love for Shen Jiu was quite... problematic, in that he saught forgiveness from SJ, without actually ever taking the time to understand him or to make amends. Patronizing and judgemental, yet willing to let SJ get away with literally anything because of his own unresolved turmoil, etc etc. Fascinating.

Thinking about XL who used to be an heir to one of the fastest-growing technology companies in the world, “Xianle Tech.” When his family’s business was still thriving, XL attended a lot of charity events to meet with clients and cultivate important connections he would have to uphold as future CEO.
Everything seemed to be going according to plan, XL developing a respectable name for himself as he began business school. Once he graduated, XL shadowed his father at work, learning the ropes of how to run a successful company that competed with the best in the world.
However, the success was never meant to last.
Only three years down the road, XianLe Tech suffered a major setback when reports spread that their new product line caused harmful explosions after little use. After paying millions in indemnification for the damage customers experienced, another scandal revealed XianLe Tech had been profiting off of unpaid labor.
Within one month, the world XL had grown up to know crumbled all around him. And he could do nothing about it. All the “friends” XL had disappeared within a blink of an eye. No one wanted to be associated with the family who had resorted to dirty practices for their advantage, which is incredibly ironic considering the business industry is all about networking and using others as stepping stones to achieve selfish goals.
Nevertheless, XL understood that it had been wrong, that he and his parents were wrong to disregard the roots of their manufacturing process. XL wasn’t aware of his privilege up until now, but he sure as hell would learn how to combat this systematic inequity, somehow salvaging what he had left along the way.
XL becomes a social worker who is a Youtuber on the side, educating his viewers about class injustices, homelessness, poverty, and the same exploitation of lower-class resources that led to XianLe Tech’s downfall. He also incites them to engage in random acts of kindness whenever they can. He doesn’t have a huge subscriber following, doesn’t make money off of his videos. XL is just glad that some people watch his videos. He hopes he can make a positive impact on their lives, no matter how small.
After all, XL is a firm believer that despite the world being a scary and lonely place, having at least one person let you know you are cared for is enough to make a difference–is enough to save a life.
***
“I am sorry, but we cannot serve you at this moment.”
“But we talked on the phone a few hours ago. I have a reservation,” XL says calmly. He holds up his phone with the confirmation page pulled up. The waiter doesn’t even glance at the screen, sniffing as if XL is nothing but a nuisance.
“Still, we don’t serve people like you,” he says, eyeing XL’s outfit with distaste.
Ah, so it was an appearance issue. XL quickly looks around at the seated guests, catching sight of wrists adorned with miraculous jewels and pricey wristwatches, bodies clothed with expensive fabrics no doubt imported from overseas. The same aura of practiced prestige and sophistication lingers in the air.
XL doesn’t even have to glance down at his ripped jeans, cream-colored sweater, and flimsy white jacket to know he sticks out like a sore thumb. He internally sighs, slightly regretting taking SQX up on their recommendation to try out The Red Thread. If XL knew he would’ve been barred from in-dining eating, he would not have placed a reservation in the first place.
But XL doesn’t want to give up just yet. He still has a lot to learn about class discrimination and prejudices; if XL were to walk away now with his tail between his legs, it would be giving power to those who claimed superiority and unjust treatment in the first place. Instead of allowing this waiter to brush him to the side like a pest, XL stands his ground, adjusting his beige handbag on his shoulder.
“I’m not sure I understand what you mean. Could you please elaborate?” XL asks in a breezy tone. A sense of amusement bubbles in his gut when the waiter looks visibly annoyed.
“Sir, we don’t mean to be unaccommodating. However, there are standards in place that were set by the CEO himself. We are simply abiding by his standards,” the waiter says, presenting the matter like he had no choice but to turn XL away.
“Is it a money problem? Because I assure you I can pay for my meal, if that’s what you’re worried about,” XL tries again. The waiter narrows his eyes, making XL gulp nervously. He unconsciously twists the hair not pulled back in his half-bun.
A few more waiters gather around them, ready to jump in if things get too heated.
“Oh, I’m certain the former heir to XianLe Tech can afford our service,” the main waiter sneers unkindly. XL’s breath catches in his throat upon being recognized. The probing eyes suffocate him, probably taking into account how renowned he was years ago and thinking how far he has fallen to come to a Michelin-starred restaurant dressed like this.
XL feels himself losing steam.
“But we are asking you to leave. It’s up to you whether or not force will be necessary.”
“It’s not right to refuse service when there is no valid reason in doing so,” XL says, more desperate this time.
“You do not pass the dress code,” another waiter pipes up. “You are not fit to be here.”
The main waiter now walks towards XL, a grim expression on his face.
“Wait, I’d like to speak to your manager, if they’re here–”
“I am the manager. Don’t make things harder for yourself,” the manager replies brusquely. He stands tall in front of XL, an intimidation tactic used to make XL back down. XL’s face heats up as he realizes he’s caught the attention of other customers as well. He’s like a trapped animal being told to scram in the presence of merciless predators.
It’s not a nice feeling, not at all.
Humiliation seeps into XL’s bones. It’s been a while since he was last scrutinized by the general public, and while this is only a handful of elite gathered in a medium-sized building, the burden weighing down on XL feels like that of the weight of the world. He needs to escape. He needs to breathe. Because only then can XL continue saving himself.
Right as XL decides it might be time to let the reins go, he hears the whooshing sound of the doors opening. He doesn’t turn to see who has entered, but the surrounding staff who were observing the exchange go deathly silent. Their faces automatically mold into a mask of obedience, posture tightening up.
***
He is one of the oldest orphans in the orphanage. His age alone makes him fit for this task, and if he does it right, he can earn money as well as the good graces of his caretakers. He can do it.
He must. He must survive.
But there are so many people. So many plates and tables and silverware. Everyone is so tall, so big, so important. It’s been three hours, and his feet have developed blisters. The bruises from a couple days ago still throb. When he smells all the rich aromas coming from the kitchen, from the plates he carries upon both hands, his stomach growls.
He feels light-headed. Too many people, he thinks. Too much talking and boisterous laughter. He wants to leave but he can’t. He won’t be paid until the end of the night, after clean-up.
He continues to work.
And then it happens. It’s too fast. He wasn’t looking where he was going, just staring at the floor as he rushed to the kitchen. But he has bumped into another person, and judging by the clothes he wears and his pleasant scent, this person is very important.
He can only stare at the mess he’s made. There are gasps of shock and horror around him. He can’t breathe. He wants to disappear. To die, just freaking die already. He will never make it out if he can’t even complete mundane work like this.
As he’s ushered into the kitchens by the older male, he prepares for the yelling, and possibly the hits. They never come. Instead, he’s cleaned up by the older male, who asks a couple questions.
He answers them willingly.
“What is your name?”
“It’s nice to meet you, Xiao Hong-er. I’m Xie Lian, you can call me gege, okay?”
“Everyone makes mistakes, Xiao Hong-er. But they will never define you. As long as you remain true to yourself, you can achieve anything you set your heart to. Do you understand?”
“I believe in you.”
When gege left through the kitchen doors, back to the adult world, back to being important, another older male walks in. The other male frowns, then says one word.
“Fired.”
***
“What is going on here?” An authoritative voice demands, sending powerful vibrations through the air. The hairs on the back of XL’s neck stand up as the new person comes up from behind him. This must be an important figure.
The manager answers that a customer–who isn’t even dressed according to the standards–has been causing trouble. Already beyond mortified at the turn of events but refusing to let it show, XL slowly meets the newcomer’s eyes as he is acknowledged.
The man is tall, at least a head taller than XL. He’s broader too, dressed to the nines just like the other waiters and customers in the restaurant. His skin is hauntingly pale, slivers of ink peeking out from underneath the dress shirt he wears, top three buttons open. XL does not allow his gaze to waver as he instantly labels this guy one of the most handsome men he’s laid eyes upon, and it makes his heart stutter.
XL shoves down these uncalled for thoughts and refrains from giving any of his emotions away.
The most peculiar thing is the eyepatch settled upon the other man’s right eye. XL makes it a point not to stare too much. The eye left uncovered regards XL with interest. XL feels shivers run down his spine at that, steeling himself for the harsh words that will be directed towards him once more.
So XL finally bows his head and lowers his eyes.
“Never mind. I was just leaving. Sorry to be a disturbance.”
An awkward silence follows. The staff doesn’t say anything, but their faces are victorious at the prospect that XL has finally caved in. On the other hand, the taller man’s eye widens, and he only regards XL for ten more seconds before anger becomes noticeable in his gaze.
XL feels his stomach drop.
He goes to make his exit, except a large hand on his shoulder prevents him from turning around. XL looks at the taller man with confusion. The eye-patched man says only one word, expression solemn.
“Stay.”
As XL processes this with raised eyebrows, the taller man now glares holes into the manager who had spoken in the first place. With a click of his tongue, loud and clear, all the staff rushes back to their places, getting back to work. This includes the manager, who ducks his head to avoid the hostile energy of who XL now assumes is his boss.
“Sir?” XL addresses quietly as all the eyes that were once staring at him go back to their own business. The taller man now fully turns to face XL, hand slipping off XL’s shoulder.
“Sorry about that. I didn’t realize such standards were put into place since my departure. I’ll ensure there are consequences for the staff that has disrespected you tonight,” he says firmly, never breaking eye contact. This makes XL’s skin crawl, makes him feel alive. The other man holds his hand out, seemingly shrinking himself to fit XL’s comfort. “I’m the owner of this establishment, by the way. You can call me San Lang.”
XL is utterly speechless for a second, automatically taking SL’s hand and shaking while simultaneously admiring his undeniable attractiveness.
“M-many thanks, San Lang. I didn’t mean to cause such a commotion...” XL feels himself blush as he takes note that their hands have been intertwined for an absurd amount of time considering they’re strangers.
“I tried telling them I had a reservation, but they wouldn’t seat me—“
“They rejected your reservation?” SL questions sharply, dropping XL’s hand and curling his own into a fist.
XL bites his lip, nodding. He can practically feel the waves of irritation rolling off of the owner. “But I suppose I didn’t realize how high-scale this restaurant is. I mean, I’ve heard many great things about the food...”
When SL doesn’t say anything, the corner of his lips turned downwards, XL quickly backtracks in panic, realizing what he said must’ve been offensive.
“I’m sure your restaurant still holds true to its reputation, haha! I suppose...maybe I should’ve thought to dress more formally so this wouldn’t have happened,” XL says.
However, SL is already shaking his head. When he speaks, his voice is hushed, words tumbling out in a smooth baritone voice that XL could listen to for hours.
“No. None of this is your fault. Please don’t take whatever my staff has said to heart. They are the ones mistaken and they will be held accountable. Forgive me for disappointing you...?” He trails off.
“Xie Lian,” XL offers helpfully, offering a small smile.
“Xie Lian...” SL says slowly, as if testing the name out and decidedly liking the way it sounds. He whispers something else under his breath that XL can’t quite make out. XL chuckles at that, now wondering how old SL is. He doesn’t look any older than XL himself, perhaps even younger. Just the mere fact that SL is this young and so successful, XL is the one in awe.
They stand at the entrance of the restaurant in a brief silence, just staring at each other. XL assumes it’s time for him to take his leave. His reservation doesn’t matter much anymore, not like he wanted to dine and be served by the same people who looked down on him because of his underdressed self.
But before he can, once again, announce his exit, SL steps a little closer, a curious look in his eye.
“Say, Xie Lian, seeing as this was such a disservice for your night, would you be interested in going somewhere else? I know a few places that have just as delicious food,” SL offers, tilting his head innocently. His long hair is tied into a low ponytail, but his side bangs fall gracefully across his face.
“Wouldn’t that be showing me your competition?” XL asks good-naturedly. SL smirks at that.
“Competition doesn’t matter when the food in question is high quality,” he answers, holding his hands up while shrugging. “You came here for a satisfactory meal, and I’m saying I know a place or two that will be just as pleasing. If you’re up to try it, just say the word,” SL continues casually, arms now crossed in a way that makes the fabric of his long-sleeved dress shirt bulge.
XL is flattered by such an offer. He looks one last time at the inside dining room, the fancy tablecloths and expensive-looking candles, and the lavishly dressed customers who sit with their backs rod-straight, fingers pointing here and there.
It’s honestly a no-brainer. XL allows himself to smile graciously, nodding. “I would greatly appreciate it. I’m merely looking for dinner. Anywhere is fine.”
SL returns the smile, one eye crinkling at the corner. He seems relieved at XL’s response, and promptly goes to grab his coat that he had thrown at a waiter upon entering.
XL’s eyes widen at the bold, maple-red long coat SL puts on, accentuating board shoulders and his slim figure. XL puts aside his self-conscious thoughts of his ratty, second-hand clothes. SL gestures for XL to walk out the doors first, typing away at his phone, most likely making a last-minute call for a reservation.
XL thinks that for once in his life, luck seems to be on his side. What could’ve been a night of total humiliation and shame turned into a nice meal with a new friend. XL pushes the doors open with a newfound sense of happiness, completely missing the way HC makes a neck-slicing motion at the staff on his way out.

TGCF Book 3 Reaction pt. 6 - We are going to Mt. Tonglu!
hahaha. So, funny thing. I got impatient and just breezed though the last two books and consumed all of the post-canon content I could find. But, even though I have finished TGCF, that doesn’t mean I didn’t leave notes that I want in big chunks like this. So I will continue working on this
Even though I read the novel, I will stay true to my notes to the best of my abilities.
Ch 138: Xie Lian remembering that he threw his meatballs like bullets without any spiritual strength, like how he went about the past 800 years
- Me: Why do people not realize that Xie Lian is buff. Buff Xie Lian art, where?
Qi Rong turns out to be a better chef than Xie Lian. Like possible House Husband material
- Me: Yo. WTF. I call hack! How did- *remembering Qi Rong’s backstory*... Okay, but how did he learn and hone his skills?
Heaven’s Eye cultivator group about to chow down on some hair when Xie Lian steps in with the pebble toss
- Me: Xie Lian saving cultivators from committing c*nn*bal*sm
Ch 139: Hua Cheng builds a little golden palace outside and then kicks it. The shady inn illusion crashes as well.
- Me: Can this get animated?
Feng Xin mentioning of an ascension acceleration method with dead babies
- Me: Wait! What if Feng Xin’s ascension is the suspicious one instead of Mu Qing
Ch 140: Xie Lian finds Guzi to be sick and dehydrated.
Mama Bear Xie Lian - Awaken
- Me: Oh shit. Xie Lian is pissed at his cousin.
Ch 141: Learning about who the father to the fetus spirit is. Learning that the fetus spirit is named Cuo Cuo. Secrets around Cuo Cuo’s birth abundant
- Me: WAIT! HE HAD S*X WITH LAN CHANG. HE F*KED?!
Xie Lian reassuring Hua Cheng, but Hua Cheng turning it around to saying that his actions are up to him. Xie Lian feels something.
Xie Lian and Hua Cheng had a moment when suddenly they see someone sitting at the table making tea
- Me: No! Is it Jun Wu?
Jun Wu is pouring three cups of tea
- Me: He saw the intimate scene between the two
Red flower that slips on the edge of the flower pot is about to fall when Xie Lian caught it like it’s the most precious thing in the world
- Me: Foreshadowing???
Xie Lian basically saying that Heaven will fall if the Heavenly Emperor is dead. Xie Lian basically saying that Heaven is floating in the sky because of the Heavenly Emperor
- Me: Man, I really hope that the Heavenly Emperor doesn’t die and make Heaven crash onto the ground, only to be upheld by the power of Xie Lian and then create a parallel of that scene in book 2, or Atlus holding up the world.
Ch 143: Heaven and the Ghost Kings have a mutual beneficial relationship
Hua Cheng using this fact to exploit Heaven singing him praises for a year.
- Me: Cunning bastard. I would have asked for praises sung to me and Xie Lian if I was in his shoes
Mt. Tonglu has the Klin and both places is that one poisonous jar where the last poisonous creature that is alive after x amount of time is emerged as the victor.
- Me: Battle Royale to the death.
Xie Lian sneaks with Ghost as a Puppet Master
- Me: Oh, nice disguise
Swift Life-Extinguishing Blade says he can find if a ghost is suspicious
- Me: Okay, but what if you are the suspicious one?
Xie Lian crouches down to hid behind the 8-12 year old looking Hua Cheng
Hua Cheng as the “Puppet Master” disguise: “No one shall touch what I love except for me”
- Me: Impressive acting there
There is a cloaked figure that Hua Cheng says they are wearing a fake face
- Me: Is it Pei Ming?
Swift Life-Extinguishing Blade dies from one slash. Xie Lian making an observation that sounds like a joke
- Me: lol
Ch 14-Mt. Tonglu gate
Some ghost ladies get hurt and the cloaked stranger immediately asks: “Are my ladies alright?”
- Me: I was right. It was Pei Ming
Pei Ming about to tease Hua Cheng when Ruoye whips out to hit Pei Ming
- Me: I don’t know if that was all Ruoye or influence from Mt. Tonglue, but go Ruoye.
Pei Ming’s mysterious candy he got to disguise his spiritual powers is revealed to be shady candy made form Ghost City. Consuming the candy is the equivalent to rubbing skunk spray all over yourself.
- lol
E-Ming has been affected like Hua Cheng. It is now a small sword
- me: Cute
Pei Ming can sense the atmosphere around Hua Cheng and Xie Lian
The Swift Life-Extinguishing Blade turns out to be alive still. Both halves are moving freely
- Me: It’s still alive. how?!
Pei Ming is revealed to be the “General Who Snapped His Sword”
- Me: *Four Tales of Heaven Background Understanding Update*
Wine: 100% Understanding & Truth of Creation
Flower Crown: 100 50% Understanding of Creation & History -Second Ascension & Third Ascension are Unknown-
Princess: 15% Understanding of Identity & History
Sword: 25% & Growing...Processing backstory now
A giant savage, dark skinned burly man in broken armour appears
- Me: Wait. Do I know this character?
It is revealed to be Ke-Mo
Xie Lian pulls a trick on Swift Life-Extinguishing Blade/Ming’Guang and Pei Ming saw it work. The trick was actually the most vile swear word of the Banyue kingdom that is the most disrespectful insult ever.
- Me: What did the army teach you Xie Lian?
Xie Lian calls out for Banyue & Pei Su knowing that they are not at Mt. Tonglu as a tactic to distract Ke Mo
- Me: lol. What if they actually come after Xie Lian called them.
When things start to look good, Xie Lian calls out on it. It is immediately changes into a bad thing
Tiny E-Ming grows with praises from Xie Lian.
Pei Ming does a big brain and smashes E-Ming’s hit to Xie Lian’s lips. E-Ming grows to a very long scimar
- Me: Pei Ming caught on what Xie Lian didn’t. Also E-Ming reflect’s Hua Cheng, so, affection makes E-Ming grow. Hua Cheng
As Ke Mo and Ming’Guang are abotu to beat Xie Lian and Pei Ming, Banyu and Pei Su do that badass entry of jumping down a cliff and kicking the opponents.
- Me: lol, Banyue and Pei Su actually appeared.
Banyue throws a scorpion-snake at Ke Mo fully knowing what she is doing and the 200 years of mutual dislike is behind it.
- Me: Ultimate betrayal.
Banyue: We came here with Rain Master
- Me: Wait. Rain Master is here?
Ch 148: Xie Lian thinks that if he does the same things he did to E-Ming to help him grow, it will help Hua Cheng grow
- Me: Awe. So cute.
Ke Mo vs. Banyue & Pei Su - Round 2: Banyue is too embarrassed to throw her snakes again at Ke Mo. Pei Su swoops in and yeets a basket full at Ke Mo who screams at them
- Me: For some reason I find this scene really funny.\
Xie Lian: Moves into kiss Hua Cheng. He kisses the forehead and is sad about it.
Pei Ming learns that Banyue is that Banyue while she backs away from Banyue as Pei Ming comes close to her
- Me: Oh wait. Does Pei Ming still smell of those Ghost Candies?
It is revealed that Banyue is weary of Pei Ming because of the candy scent
- Me: Lol, it was the candy
Rain Master is brought up
- Me: *random thought* Does Rain Master & Pei Ming have some history together?
Rain Master is at Mt. Tonglu because Qi Rong stole some of her farmers.
Pei Ming is revealed to be the opposing General of the Rain Master
- Me: Oh, they do have some history together.
Xie Lian & Readers learn about the ‘Tale of the General Who Snapped His Sword’
- Me: LORE!
Sword: 75% Understanding
Ch 149: Pei Ming insults Banyue for not knowing how to cook like other females
- Me: General Pei, I understand that in your time that might have been a norm. But modern times that is different.
Xie Lian says he will teach Banyue how to cook
- Me: Oh no. Someone please stop them.
Banyue is holding a pot of food
- Me: Oh shoit. Did Banyue?
Ch 150: Banyue’s chicken meal is a black mass of questionable origins
- Me: *sob* it’s over. Banyue is now added to the list. But at least she took up her cooking skills after her adopted dad.
Pei Su takes the dubious food and eats it after watching Hua Cheng try some.
- Me: RIP Pei Su
Hua Cheng telling Xie Lian about the history of Mt. Tonglu while Pei Su is dying in the background. Banyue’s cooking somehow turned into a spirit or eldrich horror
- Me: *sob* please. You two are so adorable together, but someone (Pei Su) is literally dying from food poisoning. You are like that one pool meme
Pei Ming has given up on Pei Su to hang with the oblivious couple
Xie Lian has heard of Wuyoung before from his past while training to Ascension.
- Me: Oh. Interesting.
Little Xie Lian learned how to recite the Ethic Sutras like nothing because he was a curious child about a forgotten kingdom and the Guoshi made him shut up through sutras.
- Guoshi, how are you real?
Xie Lian: Pei Su is talking weird. Is it because of the Scorpion-Snake?
Banyue: Pei Su has immunity from them
-Me: God you two are so oblivious.
Ch 151: What if Jun Wu is from Wuyoung? Nah. He has a 500 year difference from then.
- Me: *Remembers Qi Rong calling Jun Wu a faker and thinks there is some truth in those words* What if he became an immortal 500 years before his ascension and just loitered around for 500 years until he achieved ascension status.?
The group is Scooby-Doo investigation with Ace Attorney observation skills on the temples. of the Kingdom of Wuyoung to learn why it fell
- Me: intersting. I hope they find something interesting.
