Xelloss is really important. As a member of a demon species that lives mostly on suffering, he's maybe not even really a he. He just is. I think he was the first time I was aware of how much I liked characters that looked like wimpy clueless weirdos but could actually kill you in a glance. He was also really good at drag.

I did a lot of original character stuff that spawned from Xelloss, most of which centered on a character who went through 3 genders to be where they are now. The idea of genderless characters made me absolutely obsessed. It's still a part of me today!

Xelloss is where the last part of 'ladyyatexel' comes from, in the same way Sailor Star Healer is the origin of the 'yate' part.

Xelloss is part of a series of drawings I'm doing featuring characters who left a big mark on me and Gender.

Every hair on Griff's body stood on end as she heard the soft voice from behind her, and felt the press of something heavy between her shoulder blades. The sinister voice in here ear was immediately familiar, a voice she hadn't heard in more than a year, but could never, ever forget. A voice she heard in her dreams.

She went stock still, like a deer at the snap of a twig.

"Master Xelloss." Her whisper barely escaped her throat.

She felt lips against the edge of her ear and hot breath. "So you haven't forgotten me."

"Never."

Slayers fans are frightened for their lives. Everyone else is baffled.

As Xelloss stepped forward a frilly pink apron and kerchief shimmered into existence over his traveling clothes.  As he stepped up to the pot Griff felt a sting of nerves and glanced at her traveling companions. This was the first time she'd ever felt like it might be wise to divulge one of her master's secrets before he did, but a glance at Lina's face quickly stilled the urge. Despite the appearance of danger here, Griff, unlike Lina, knew that it was all basically under control.

And it would be very funny to see Lina's reaction to whatever Xelloss made.

As Xelloss stepped forward to speak with the other mazoku, he handed his staff to Griff and she cradled it with awe in her arms, trying to divine the meaning of the gesture.

The staff was not merely an object, magically or mundane, it was a piece of her master's very essence, a part of his power. Even through her gloved fingers she felt as though she could sense the hum of that power. 

It was a message to the other mazoku, she realized, that she was with him and of some importance. Griff held it close to her chest.

His introduction scene OH MY GOD.

Xelloss' dark figure seemed to glow framed by the moonlight, his hair and cloak tugged by the warm breeze. Little of his face was visible, just the knife-like curve of his wicked smile.

Griff stood breathless every time her teacher made such an entrance. She didn't understand how anyone could see him like that and be deceived that he was, as he claimed, some traveling priest, and not what he really was– a magnificent beast diffusing dark power around him with every step and motion.

She could see it no matter his physical form, and it reduced her to trembling.
