Patron saints for US election aftermath

Below are some saints I humbly recommend to pray to as the United States faces this new and challenging era after the results of our recent election. Those that use prayer for intercession may find comfort in learning more about the saints below, and building a communication with them.

Social justice — St. Martín de Porres Poverty — St. Francis of Assisi Women — St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Immigrants — St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Racial justice — St. Katharine Drexel Ecology and environment — St. Kateri Tekakwitha (the first Indigenous American saint) Education/teachers — St. John Baptist de La Salle

If you'd like, I have included some notes and extras below —

Please if you can, take some time to learn about St. Martín de Porres! His soul is beautiful and his work was absolutely selfless as he cared for others in the face of social abuse and adversity. He really is someone to aspire to be like.

I nominate St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in this particular instance as it's difficult to pin down a definitive patron saint of women (all of my cross-references didn't produce a strong label on any one saint; many were for mothers or some other aspect attributed to womanhood, so there are many options). But St. Elizabeth was the first American-born citizen to be canonized as a saint, and in her life she started a Catholic school for girls. She is most known for founding of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph’s, the first religious order in America who contributed significant humanitarian work. In the wake of the US election results, I think she is an apt choice for connecting with for intercession.

I'm a biased St. Joan D'Arc follower, but hear me out. She was the crux of saving her home country from the very literal brink of being lost to Britain in a war that spanned a century. She rallied the last skeleton crew of the remaining French monarchal power that had all but been defeated already, and helped to take their name and land back from the English. I will be continuing to pray to her regularly to help find ways to fight for our freedom and remain courageous. I encourage others to do the same if you pray to her, or would like to start.

While I wish I had a suggestion for a saint to pray to for the LGBTQIA+ community, as they are adopted through history (St. Sebastian) or are not strictly official. But there are some interesting perspectives to find online, I just couldn't find a saint I could comfortably name with my whole chest for this particular group. I was intrigued by some responses on this Quora thread on the matter in question.

As always, these are only suggestions based on my imperfect research, as I am still newly navigating my reclaimed faith. If you have other patrons to recommend, please add them in a reblog so that others may learn about them.

1882 Italian villa style home in Denison, TX. 5bds, 4ba, 6,782 sq ft, $1.7m. Built by master German carpenters and Bavarian woodcarvers, under the direction of renowned architect John McDougall, famed for his work on St. Patrick's Church and Xavier Academy. Of course, it's currently rented out as an Airbnb for $1400 per night.

I didn't expect this, especially the cathedral-like art on the ceiling. Beautiful chandelier and woodwork, plus stained glass and leaded glass windows.

In the huge dining room. These ceilings are crazy. Then, you've got a stone floor and a balcony.

There's a sitting room off the balcony and you can close the sliding glass doors.

The sitting room off the dining room looks like it has some church architectural salvage. The lighting is definitely from a church.

Have you ever seen a more elegant kitchen and everyday dining area? I wonder if some of the windows came from a church.

I bet that no one even uses the kitchen.

How tranquil. A lovely office or possibly a library. I love the colors. Now, why would they stage this and rent it out as an Airbnb? All of the fireplaces are hand-carved. I would live here myself.

So, instead of the owners using this as their own primary bedroom, they rent it out. I guess they have their own mansion. This is beautiful, though.

Look at the en-suite. Very cool red tub.

This room isn't that great, but at least it has a shower in the en-suite.

This room would be for a family.

Kitchen so you can cook for the family while you're on "vacation." Yeah, no. I think I'll pass.

And, this is an apt. for a gang.

There's a washer/dryer and ironing board.

This suite gets this fancy bath.

Plus a closet, if they're having an extended stay.

And, this small room has a cute vintage bath.

Nice porch to sit on.

Pool and hot tub.

There's also a pond.

Blessed Fr. Francis Xavier Seelos was beatified by Pope Saint John Paul II in 2000. Born in Germany, he was inspired to be a Redemptorist missionary priest in the U.S. to serve the German immigrants. At St. Philomena’s Parish in Pittsburgh, he was the assistant to St. John Neumann, who was his spiritual director and encouraged him to preach missions. Fr. Seelos lived a simple lifestyle, serving the poor and abandoned. He was called the “Cheerful Ascetic,” the “American Wonderworker,” the “Doctor of Souls,” for his intercession in healing bodies and souls. He was assigned to parishes in Detroit, Baltimore, and New Orleans, where he died from yellow fever contracted from caring for victims of the disease.

Being with Magneto had given John a new lease on life. Why should he hide who was? Mutants were the next step in evolution, and he was embracing that.

He hadn't thought of his family since he left and started at Xaviers, but seeing the photos in Bobbys house brought back all the abuse he dealt with his father was a drunk and hated mutants so when his own son turned out to be one he began to beat him and his mother just sat back and watched.

So he had returned home, and currently, he was standing across the street from his childhood home, watching it burn to the ground. His parents were still inside, most likely already dead as he had locked them in their bedroom so they couldn't escape.

He stayed there watching until the fire department and crowd started forming, and he walked away, hood over his head. He didn't need to be seen at this point in time. Magneto still needed him for bigger and better things.

You know, I am mostly joking about Pyro and his books, but I think it would actually be an interesting story looking at "soft power" and which books/media are seen as "worthy" to have people like Magneto and Xavier dismiss Pyro's books as unimportant, but Pyro winds up being very influential in mutant-human relations because his romances are so popular, and he winds up with a whole army of followers on Twitter that will retweet/reblog anything he says. At that point, the Council would have probably clamped down and started tightly controlling all of Pyro's social media accounts in order to wield that influence (I could especially imagine Emma stepping in here to offer St. John "guidance" at managing his public image.)

Of course, Pyro would also probably have to stop setting people on fire, and you know he'd never do that.

St. Ethelwold. Bishop of Winchester, England, called “the Father of Monks.” Born in that city, he was ordained by St. Alphege the Bald. In 943, he joined the Benedictines at Glastonbury under St. Dunstan. He became the abbot of Abingdon in 955 and bishop in 963. Ethelwold worked with Sts. Dunstan and Oswald of York in bringing about a monastic revival after the Danish invasions. He also expelled the canons of Winchester, replacing them with monks. Ethelwold founded or restored the abbeys of Ely, Chertsey, Milton Abbas, Newminster, Peterborough, and Thorney.
