Truth-Teller, Gwydion and Illyrian Runes... or are they actually Wyrdmarks?
This post was written for @azrielappreciationweek Day 7 - Free
Disclaimer: as always, this is just a theory that I think is fun and it makes no claim of being canon. It's definitely entering crack theory territory. This post also isn't Azriel specific - it's more about the dagger he has used for centuries and how it may tie into the Maasverse, or Prythian's plot, as a whole than Azriel himself. I know it's Azriel Appreciation Week, but this is his dagger, at least currently, so I feel like it's okay. It also rambles a bit, sorry.
Spoilers: there are big, huge, massive Maasverse spoilers ahead, so please beware.

The possible significance of Azriel and Elain Archeron, the Embrace of Solas and Cthona, the paired blades Gwydion and Truth-Teller, and thin places; a theory - in particular the section about the two Made blades.
Love it or hate it - though personally, I love it for many reasons - we all know about the "Truth-Teller scene" in ACOWAR. While I do think it will end up being incredibly crucial and symbolic for Azriel and Elain Archeron as a couple (you may disagree of course), I also think there is a good chance that its importance to the overall plot was intentionally highlighted by its inclusion in the ACOTAR colouring book, which is what I hope to discuss here (plot, not romance, though as this is romantasy I do think the couple will be reflected in the plot/vice versa).
Here is the passage again, to refresh your memory:
Viviane stepped in, offering a Winter Court fashion that was far less scandalous: leather pants, but paired with a thigh-length blue surcoat, white fur trimming the collar. In the heat, itâd be miserable, but Elain was thankful enough that she didnât complain when we again emerged from the covered wagon and found our companions waiting. She refused the knife Cassian handed her, though. Went white as death at the sight of it. Azriel, still limping, merely nudged aside Cassian and extended another option. âThis is Truth-Teller,â he told her softly. âI wonât be using it todayâso I want you to.â His wings had healedâthough long, thin scars now raked down them. Still not strong enough, Madja had warned him, to fly today. The argument with Rhys this morning had been swift and brutal: Azriel insisted he could flyâfight with the legions, as theyâd planned. Rhys refused. Cassian refused. Azriel threatened to slip into shadow and fight anyway. Rhys merely said that if he so much as tried, heâd chain Azriel to a tree. And Azriel ⌠It was only when Mor had entered the tent and begged himâbegged him with tears in her eyesâthat he relented. Agreed to be eyes and ears and nothing else. And now, standing amongst the sighing meadow grasses in his Illyrian armor, all seven Siphons gleaming ⌠Elainâs eyes widened at the obsidian-hilted blade in Azrielâs scarred hand. The runes on the dark scabbard. âIt has never failed me once,â the shadowsinger said, the midday sun devoured by the dark blade. âSome people say it is magic and will always strike true.â He gently took her hand and pressed the hilt of the legendary blade into it. âIt will serve you well.â âIâI donât know how to use itââ âIâll make sure you donât have to,â I said, grass crunching as I stepped closer. Elain weighed my words ⌠and slowly closed her fingers around the blade. Cassian gawked at Azriel, and I wondered how often Azriel had lent out that bladeâ Never, Rhys said from where he finished buckling on his own weapons against the side of the wagon. I have never once seen Azriel let another person touch that knife. Elain looked up at Azriel, their eyes meeting, his hand still lingering on the hilt of the blade. I saw the painting in my mind: the lovely fawn, blooming spring vibrant behind her. Standing before Death, shadows and terrors lurking over his shoulder. Light and dark, the space between their bodies a blend of the two. The only bridge of connection ⌠that knife. Paint that when we get home. Busybody. - ACOWAR, chapter 69
I have previously theorised that Truth-Teller may have pierced the veil of Prythian's world in order to let Elain shadow walk through the murky realm/void to save Nesta and Cassian at the end of ACOWAR - which of course parallels Azriel's threat to "slip into shadow and fight anyway" - but it also ties into the power that Truth-Teller and Gwydion/the Starsword can activate together: instead of opening a portal to somewhere, as a few of us had previously theorised about Truth-Teller alone, we learnt in HOFAS that the dagger and sword will open a portal to nowhere.
A black hole... or a Void?
@wingedblooms has previously suggested that the woman on the cover of HOFAS, who had runes - or were they really Wyrdmarks? - down her arms, may be Wyrd, and I agree. We would both especially love it if Wyrd was the secret language of the universe - the language spoken by shadow, wind and stone, or even what Singers used to cast spells - because how much would that make sense? It would also tie TOG in with a tidy bow, given the importance of Wyrd, Wyrdmarks, Wyrdkeys and Wyrdgates to Aelin's story.
But it could get wrapped up even tidier. I hope.
The markings on Truth-Teller's sheath
Take a much closer look at the "Illyrian runes" on Truth-Teller's scabbard, the runes that SJM made sure existed in print, in May 2017 (the colouring book was published the same day that ACOWAR came out, on the 2nd of May).
But back to the runes.
Do you see what I see?!
They are so similar to the runes on HOFAS' cover that it cannot be coincidental? I acknowledge that they're not identical, but they pass the vibe check.
A. I've previously discussed the possibility of the first rune on the HOFAS cover being derived from the Embrace of Solas and Cthona, and that it might have been indicating the two Made blades, Gwydion and Truth-Teller, coming together to create a portal to nowhere. @wingedblooms has also brilliantly suggested that it could be depicting the three mountains of the Night Court, or even the three sister peaks. But do you see the similarity with the top rune(s) on Truth-Teller's scabbard? The dot and two ^ type markings come together differently, but imo the components are still there.
B. This portion is the weakest link for sure, not least because there are more runes on the woman's arm than Truth-Teller's sheath - and I'm no artist so my opinion definitely comes with a huge heaping of salt (if anyone wants to weigh in then please do!) - but I can see similarities in the elements of certain runes. If I put my clown hat on then the spiral could be referring to a vortex/portal, and the marking half hidden by the O could be depicting a ship... you know, like those names after the Archeron sisters.
C. The two opposing triangles on Truth-Teller could be referencing the diamond on the woman's forearm and the crescent moon shape half hidden by Azriel's thumb could potentially be linked with the crescent moon shape above the diamond. Could the diamond on each of her forearms be suggesting siphons, like those worn by Azriel and Cassian? And is the crescent moon referring to the Mother, or Wyrd? SJM paralleled siphons and invoking stones were in ACOSF, was she hinting that the Illyrians and the priestesses all serve Wyrd in the end?
If I'm correct - a big "if" - the difference in runes, or Wyrdmarks, could be down to one of a few potential reasons (though the following list is not exhaustive):
It was always intentional so we wouldn't piece it together too easily.
The almost seven year gap between ACOWAR and the colouring book coming out in 2017, and HOFAS in 2024. Things change.
The in-universe time difference between Wyrd's birth/creation and Truth-Teller's forging. Did the wyrdmarks "evolve," so to speak?
The Wyrdmarks are not actually identical; perhaps they only look similar because they have similar or even complementary meanings?
I'm actually completely wrong and need to remove my clown makeup right now. đ¤Ą
It would make sense that Truth-Teller's wyrdmarks were not identical to those we would see on Wyrd (assuming it is actually Her on HOFAS' cover). One of those things is a goddess, a force who created their entire universe, and the other is a dagger that can help open a portal to the Void and ferry the bearer through. Truth-Teller's scabbard might tell a story, it might hold a warning, or even contain a spell or the instructions for activating its magic etc; are they a spell to contain the power of the blade, as Bryce hinted at in HOFAS, or something else?
As if their sheaths had kept their power contained, the naked metal now throbbed against her palm, up her arms, tugging toward each other so violently it took all her strength to keep them apart. - HOFAS, chapter 48
It's just a pity that - unless I missed it - we weren't told about any markings on the Starsword, though that's assuming that its scabbardš was the original (or that Truth-Teller's is the original, of course - maybe it was given a new sheath, one with a very specific message, after Silene returned to Prythian). All we know is that both blades were Made by the Cauldron, with their obsidian² (wyrdstone?) hilts and black Iridium blades that can devour light (though Gwydion's blade can sparkle) and appear muted in darkness, I assume because there is no sunlight to charge their magic.
š @ladynightcourt3 has previously suggested that Truth-Teller may have been blessed by the God of Truth, who also blessed Damaris - the Sword of Truth, first wielded by Gavin Havilliard and currently claimed by Dorian Havilliard - which also has Wyrdmarks on its scabbard and was used in the Valg king Erawan's death. She's also reminded me that the Asterion blades in TOG also have markings, and are described as being made of a dark metal imbued with starlight... sounds familiar!
² @emmitaaa4 reminded me that wyrdstone can cause headaches in those who carry it - and who is known to rub his temples so much that Elain gifted him headache powder? Azriel.
I have spoken before about the possibility of the obsidian hilts either being possessed by some sort of Void based being, or that the material may help the Made blades attract a prince of Hel by design (here and here). Imagine if the IridiumÂł blades come from a meteorite originating in Hel. Could the Made blades be secret wyrdkeys thanks to their hilts?
Âł The element iridium's name is derived from "Iris," which means rainbow. Could this be where the meteorite that went into forging Gwydion and Truth-Teller have fallen... in the Rainbow of Velaris? What does this mean for Velaris' history, or the future of the Made blades? Will Feyre, the protector of the Rainbow, become involved?
What might this mean for Prythian?
Let's revisit the Truth-Teller scene, and pay close attention to Elain's clothes: Winter Court attire. Too warm, but Elain didn't complain... is that because she suspected she may have to brave the cold, harsh environment in the space between before the day was done? My next suggestion is unlikely, but could her face have turned crimson because she didn't know how to ask for warmer clothes without explaining that she'd Seen that she'd need them, especially if she knew that she was going to be sent away and she'd have to work from the shadows, as uaual? This could even tie in with my theory that the Archeron sisters will "sail" (for lack of a better term, sorry I know it's silly) the bat brothers by Singing them across the Void, possibly to Hel, as Nesta wanted insulated leathers in ACOSF. @elrieldreamer and I have previously discussed the fact that the serpents (dragons?) on HOFAS' cover look like they could be passing through Wyrdgates, which could also circle into the "sailing through the void" idea I mentioned in my post about The Weaver's Song, because Illyrian armour is known to feature scales. So isn't it handy that Emerie can source fleece-lined leathers!
âI was about to write to you before Bellius interrupted me. I asked about making leathers with fleece inside.â Emerie leaned her forearms on the immaculate counter. âIt can be done, but itâs not cheap.â âThen itâs beyond my means, but thank you for finding out anyway.â âI could order it and let you pay it off as youâre able.â - ACOSF, chapter 25
Then there's the blade-like object that appears to be pointing down onto the eight-pointed star above the woman's head; could it be indicating Truth-Teller or Gwydion, or even Damaris - the Sword of Truth - from TOG?
The eight-pointed star obviously holds relevance to Nesta, given the tattoos that she and Cassian shared for much of ACOSF and Bryce's parting remarks in HOFAS, and we know the Starborn used it as their symbol, but why? Many don't realise that it may also have been the symbol on 'The Elain' ship that Papa Archeron commissioned among the three named for each of his daughters. Could it be a seafaring compass rose/rose of the winds, as Wingedblooms has previously discussed? Is it also related to Ishtar, another amazing theory shared by @wingedblooms' and @merymoonbeam? Or could it actually be the Chaosâ´ star, and truly be a symbol of Wyrd as Chaos, the Mother - or dam - to all?
â´ I hope to post this theory soon.
I cannot move past the fact that, in addition to The Elain flying an eight-pointed star with nothing on either side (referencing the Void?), The Nesta was flying a dragon with two suns, and The Feyre was flying two crescent moons and diamonds. It has to mean something, right?
I still find it really interesting that one of the eyes of the woman on HOFAS' cover - which seems to be all about depicting gate travel and world walking - appears to be bleeding, when Gwyn remarked in ACOSF that reading Merrill's theories about multiple worlds made her eyes bleed.
Gwyn frowned. âLots of things. Merrillâs brilliant. Horrible, but brilliant. When she first came here, she was obsessed with theories regarding the existence of different realmsâdifferent worlds. Living on top of each other without even knowing it. Whether there is merely one existence, our existence, or if it might be possible for worlds to overlap, occupying the same space but separated by time and a whole bunch of other things I canât even begin to explain to you because I barely understand them myself.â Nestaâs brows rose. âReally?â âSome philosophers believe there are eleven worlds like that. And some believe there are as many as twenty-six, the last one being Time itself, which âŚâ Gwynâs voice dropped to a whisper. âHonestly, I looked at some of her early research and my eyes bled just reading her theorizing and formulas.â Nesta chuckled. âI can imagine. But sheâs researching something else now?â âYes, thank the Cauldron. Sheâs writing a comprehensive history of the Valkyries.â - ACOSF, chapter 13
Now, Gwyn was obviously being flippant while attempting to demonstrate the extent of Merrill's brilliance, but who do we know who has peered across one world so far, who may be set up as a worldwalker with a strong affinity to any thin places? Elain Archeron, the sister whose ship flew the eight pointed star sail for all to see. A Seer. Will the Seer's eyes bleed when she looks too far, or past wards of "mist and shadow" designed to keep her out?
âFirebird by day,â Rhys mused, âwoman by night ⌠So sheâs held captive by this sorcerer-lord?â Elain shook her head. âI donât know. I hear herâher screaming. With rage. Utter rage âŚâ She shuddered. Mor leaned forward. âDo you know why the other queens cursed herâsold her to him?â Elain studied the table. âNo. Noâthat is all mist and shadow.â Rhys blew out a breath. âCan you sense where she is?â âThere is ⌠a lake. Deep inâin the continent, I think. Hidden amongst mountains and ancient forests.â Elainâs throat bobbed. âHe keeps them all at the lake.â âOther women like her?â âYesâand no. Their feathers are white as snow. They glide across the waterâwhile she rages through the skies above it.â - ACOWAR, chapter 33
Its over-large teeth clacked faintly. âThrice now, we have met. Thrice now, you have hunted for me. This time, you sent the trembling fawn to find me. I did not expect to see those doe-eyes peering at me from across the world.â - ACOWAR, chapter 58
Alpha and omega. Ask and answer (and Azriel told Elain that Truth-Teller would "serve" - a synonym to "answer" - her well). Made (or Make) and Unmade (or Unmake). Matter and antimatter. Gwydion can kill the unkillable, while Truth-Teller slew an almost unstoppable king. They Singâľ to each other - is it a spell, or are they communicating in Wyrd, the secret language of the universe > Chaos > eight pointed star? - and to those who bear enough Starborn magic to hear it. Azriel learnt that he can charge a Starborn fae like Bryce in HOFAS, there are three Archeron sisters who share significant parallels with Bryce and Theia... and wouldn't you know it, Azriel has two brothers. I could always be wrong, but this all seems fated to me.
âľ I know I'm not alone in speculating whether Elain heard Truth-Teller Singing to her like kin, as @wingedblooms, @emmitaaa4, @psychologynerd and @ladynightcourt3 all share this theory at least (I've also wondered if she can hear Azriel's siphons singing, but that's another theory). Is this why Elain's eyes widened when Azriel offered Truth-Teller? Did it Sing to her? Is she a Singer, as @silverlinedeyes, @wingedblooms and I suspect? Was this in addition to (or instead of) her Seeing herself using it to kill the king? If true, this could parallel the scene earlier on in HOFAS where Elain's eyes widened at "the shadowsinger's display" just before Azriel winnowed her to Windhaven; was Elain listening to his shadows and/or Truth-Teller such that she could activate the blades (or her own) hypothetical shadow walking magic later on?
Anyway, sorry for rambling on a fair bit there, if you made it this far thank you for reading my nonsense! I am so excited to learn what SJM has been planning, because just like Koschei I think she's been playing the long game and setting all of these pieces up for years, even if it was just in case.

I just realized I may never have introduced Eosphoros!! After the horror that was Cassandra and Etele's reigns of terror (for Daglan, Valg and Fae). Eosphoros was a Daglan who grew up in the shadow of these horror stories. She vowed to take Etele down and take her throne, she vowed to make a kingdom where everyone would prosper.
She sought alliances and friendships with Hypaxia and Anastasiya to help bring that to fruition. The idea with all three of them no one would stand in their way (because they were allied with one of the three in some fashion).
Her idea was to find the Wyrdkeys that Seb and Nat had scattered in their war (because they were too powerful to be used) and bring Etele and her empire down.
She proposed each one of them take a throne. Dornelle, Terresan and Wendlyn would not fall again. They would be unified and bring about a new Golden Age for All.
Fun fact, her magic is formed as a whip of lava.
Warrior and Gentry versions of Etele.

Nesta and Amren losing their powers was unfair but at least their was some kind of gain
Aelin however..... She completely lost evrything and what did she get? Absolutely nothing
there was this really interesting theory on tiktok last year about how in a lot of women-centric fantasy, only âgood girlsâ get to keep their powers. it wasnât about SJM, but i think about this in relation to the SJMverse soooo much because it happens with a lot (all) of her characters.
the video has been deleted (itâs blank in my bookmarks đ) but to paraphrase the theory, OP magical female characters get boxed into two categories:
good girls: selfless, savior complex, puts everyone especially her man first, often modest/humble, scandalized when they have to wear sexy clothes for a plot point, only fuck when presented with one bed or similar situation (ie, they need to *be* seduced)
bad girls: selfish, proud, difficult to get along with, vain, seductive/DTF (theyâre not bad people, many are heroines. theyâre justâŚdifficult. they loathe themselves. they make mistakes and donât make excuses.)
feyre is the literal holotype of a good girl. she puts everyone else, especially her male partner, before herself. she is a little more selfish at the beginning of the books, but she undergoes a lot of character growth by acowar/acofas. in acowar i think it makes her compelling because sheâs so recklessly brave that it almost sets her alliesâ efforts back (itâs almost a mistake!) but everything always works out for her. but by acofas, when sheâs wearing herself to the bone doing charity work, sheâs become a martyr. she also is forced into wearing sexy clothes (by rhys) and they donât do anything sexual until thereâs, of course, only one bed. sheâs so OP her powers eventually get nerfed for plot reasons (nesta, elain, and other side characters need a chance to shine, so feyre gets pregnant, shielded, and now has a baby to protect so she probably wonât risk herself unless anything threatens nyx), but her powers are still there. she still has control and agency over her powers. sheâs just choosing not to use them or put herself in harmâs way because sheâs now a mother.
nesta, amren, and aelin are bad girls because they are selfish, proud, difficult to get along with. we donât know much about amrenâs sexual history but we know aelin cockteased rowan for months, and nesta made her way through velaris and jumped right into bed with cassianânot for love, but for a distractionâonce she was confined to the house of wind. (i know feyre claimed her one bed moment with rhysand was for a distraction as well, but she wasnât really in the same place as nesta where sex was an active self-destructive coping mechanism for her. and she later admits to rhys she was lying about wanting distraction to protect herself.) and yeah amren and aelin gives up their powers for the wars and nesta gives up her powers forâŚâŚa wider pelvis.
because bad girls can only be redeemed by sacrificing their power. good girls will gladly sacrifice their power and lives, but they are always spared. bad girls may offer their lives too (as amren and aelin did), but even if their lives are spared they never get to keep their power like good girls do.
(and of course OP men always get to keep their powers.)
so many authors seem to think the only satisfying resolution to a difficult womanâs character arc is making them give up their power to save someone else. personally i think itâs so tired. give us a stone cold bitch who doesnât have to nuke herself for a new pelvis!!! please authors i am begging you
#acotar#Amren and nesta should've power theirs power#But her and nesta losing their powers still had a reason#but aelin lost her powers for what exactly?!#The wyrdkeys were pretty much useless#they had to kill erawen themselves and his death was wayyyyy to easy#she lost her chance to be immortal#her losing her power was nonsense#it was a another level of unfair#aelin galathynius#throne of glass#tog#amren#nesta

Aelin Galathynius created Prythian. She is the Mother.
This theory contains TOG, ACOTAR and (slight) CC SPOILERS!
Many, many thousands of years ago, Amren recalled that a huge "rip in the sky" appeared in her home world. Out of curiosity, Amren flew through this rip, and landed in Prythian.
This perfectly aligns with Aelin ripping a hole in the sky of the God's realm. This is the most concrete piece of evidence that Throne of Glass took place in the past (something I have already theorised about).
However, and most interestingly, it is suggested that Amren entered Prythian when it was being made - when the world itself was beginning to form.
If Aelin indeed created the "rip" in the sky that Amren went into - the timing suggests that Aelin's actions led to the creation of Prythian.
And, although subtle, we actually have proof of this.
Recall that Wyrd was described as the thing that "keeps the realms apart:"
But, when Aelin shut the gates between worlds at the end of Kingdom of Ash, we have this VERY important (and often overlooked) clue:
Aelin caused for all worlds to overlap.
I believe this is how Prythian was born.
The Cauldron.
According to the mural that Feyre observes, Prythian was created by a female with "glowing, slender hands," who tipped a fluid with "strange symbols" (wyrdmarks), from the Cauldron, onto the land.
I believe this was Aelin - perhaps not literally, but metaphorically.
But this begs the question; what exactly is the Cauldron?
For starters, we know that the Cauldron has 3 "legs". These legs provide most of its power (and this is an important clue!)
This is very similar to the 3 wyrdkeys in TOG; the very 3 wyrdkeys that Aelin embedded into her arm (and subsequently her blood) when she sealed the gates.
Aelin then gave over the 3 wyrdkeys, and all of her fire power to forge the new lock. It is this very power that is the essence of the Cauldron.Â
As evidence of this, when we see the Cauldron's power in ACOWAR, it presents as Aelin's own power; "raw fire power," capable of burning an entire army to ash within seconds.
The Dread Trove.
The Cauldron also created the Dread Trove - and this is another very important clue.
The Crown.
The Crown can control and influence people - just like the wyrdkeys (and subsequent wyrdcollars and rings controlled people in TOG).
The Mask.
The Mask can control the dead - just like the wyrdkeys could create armies of dead people; a power Erawan desperately wanted.
The Harp.
The Harp can open portals to different locations, and potentially different worlds and realms. This is one of the key features of the wyrdkeys.
In fact, it was said the 3 wyrdkeys were needed to create a wyrdgate.
The Cauldron has 3 legs (that I believe are the 3 wyrdkeys Aelin yielded to seal the lock).
Thus, the Cauldron *IS* a wyrdgate.
Cauldron = Wyrdgate.
As further proof of this, to "nullify" the Cauldron, Amren had to:
give up her current body,
forget about those she loved,
and unleash her power of "light and flame."
Which is just like Mala Fire-Bringer; who also had to:
give up her current body,
forget about those she loved, (in fact, both her and Amren both warned that they will no longer "remember" their loved ones),
and unleash her power of "light and flame", in order to forge the lock, and shut the wyrdgate.
But, recall that when Mala's plan didn't work, Aelin (and Dorian) had to give all of their power to reforge a new lock, in order to seal and shut the wyrdgate once more.
This is just like Rhys in ACOWAR; in order to re-seal the Cauldron, he had to give over every inch of his power.
In fact, when Aelin and Dorian's power were used together, and in combination with the wyrdkeys, it was described as "creation and destruction," and the "beginning and the ending."
These are the exact same terms used to describe the Cauldron - and I'd argue the exact same *power* of the Cauldron (but more on that later).
And, as a side note - at one point, the Cauldron's power was even described as "fire and ice"... (ring any bells?)
The Lock.
Further, when Aelin and Dorian were sealing the wyrdgate shut, they had to make a "lock."
The lock they made was the Eye of Elena. This is perhaps the most important clue in this theory; that this very symbol and mechanism allowed for the creation of the Cauldron.
However, we learn in later TOG books that this symbol isn't just known as the Eye of Elena, but also as the "Eye of the Goddess." This is because it was first a sacred witch symbol, created by Rhiannon Crochan.
Crochan means Cauldron.
Additionally, the Eye of the Goddess was named as such, as it is said to represent the Three Faced Goddess (that the witches worshipped), and her three counterparts;
The Maiden
The Mother
The Crone.
It's for this reason that I believe the Cauldron was created from the Eye of Elena, or the Eye of the Goddess lock, as it too follows the principles of Maiden, Mother, and Crone.
We see clear evidence of this when Elain, Nesta and Briallyn were thrown into the Cauldron.
Elain was made into the Maiden.
The Maiden often symbolises innocence, beauty and blossoming.
In TOG, the Maiden was represented by the Blueblood witches, who were the "oracles, mystics, and zealots."
Elain was made into a Seer.
The Bluebloods also required more iron (as it was said that they were the most powerful), and it is rather interesting that Elain (presumably) wears an iron ring.
Nesta was made into the Mother.
The Mother often symbolises maturity, responsibility, and power.
In TOG, the Mother was represented by the Blackbeak witches, who were the warriors - known for their "obedience, discipline, and brutality."
Considering the multiple references to Nesta making a fine General in an army, as well as the parallels between Manon's thirteen, and Nesta's Valkyries - it makes perfect sense.
Briallyn was made into the Crone.
She was, quite literally, turned into an old woman by the Cauldron.
Creation and Destruction.
Knowing that that the Cauldron was made from the Eye of Elena/Eye of the Goddess, as well as the 3 wyrdkeys, as well as Aelin's own power that she donated to forge the lock, and seal the gate - this can explain Nesta's own power.
Nesta's power manifested as "cold" flame, one that seemingly burned without a trace.
We have already seen this before;
Aelin's moon-fire,
and Kaltain's shadow-fire.
The commonality between these two? Both women were in possession of the wyrdkeys.
The same wyrdkeys that the Cauldron now possess; the same power that Nesta stole.
And, all in all, this makes perfect sense. The Cauldron is a wyrdgate. Wyrd is the "language of the universe," it is the power of both creation and destruction, life and death.
Nesta's power symbolises one half - Death.
And, it's for this reason that I believe that Elain's powers (that are yet to be revealed), will symbolise the other half - Life. Creation. (And, I also have an inkling that she will be the one to rebuild the Dusk Court with this very power).
We also know that the Cauldron loved Elain. If the Cauldron was indeed created by Aelin - that she is it's Mother - then perhaps it's no coincidence that "Elain" is an anagram for "Aelin"....?
A portal too?
If the Cauldron is indeed a wyrdgate - then recall that Feyre threw the Book of Breathings into it.
Now, Jesiba Roga possesses that exact book.
Does this tell us that the Cauldron is in fact a wyrdgate to Lunathion, and the Crescent City world...?
Knowing all the connections between the Cauldron and the witches - and Jesiba being a witch herself, it makes sense...

Throne of glass head cannons I wholeheartedly believe and you canât convince me otherwise
ââââââââââââââââââââââââ
⢠Aelin essentially became a wyrdkey at a certain point due to her knowledge of the wyrdmarks and her skill of using them to be able to open portals to other worlds (hell realm from CoM) with the addition of having a goddesses power
⢠Aelin wouldâve had matching hand burns with Az bad Maeve not rebuilt her completely
⢠Aelin bound her life to Fenrys to save him which means someday when Aelin dies so will Fenrys
⢠If Sam had survived Rowan still wouldâve waited for Aelin
â˘Aelin is Ambidextrous due to when she had to break her right hand when she was with Arobynn
â˘Bryce and Aelin share a title âThe Queen who walked between worlds
⢠Aelin also gained another name where she was referred to as âQueen of the Underworldâ bc of her murder streak and success in war
⢠Eva just calls Aelin her aunt bc Aelin and Aedion act so much like siblings instead of cousins that Eva just got the impression they were brother and sister at one point and even after being corrected it just kind of stuck that she called her her aunt
⢠there have been several occasions for when Aedion points at Lysandra and says thatâs his wife to a stranger but Lysandra is in her ghost leopard form so Aedion just looks crazy
⢠when Celaena was in the dungeons after Nehemiahâs death she was only drinking the drug infused water bc she hopes that there would be just enough sedatives in there to kill her
⢠you cannot convince me Celaena and Nehemia didnât kiss each other at least once romantically
⢠when Aelin uses her magic and flames form in her hands or something sheâs directly touching, the veins leading up to her wrist start to faintly glow a golden color like her fire bc her magic âflows directly through her veinsâ.
â˘Same with her eyes where she can do the thing Nesta did and make her flame appear in her eyes where the golden ring is when she wants
â˘Imagine how it would be if death in the TOG world was similar to how death was believed to be in Ancient Greece where if the death was not acknowledged through a burial of some sorts or prayers sent up for the dead then the soul would forever be tied to the living world and not allowed to pass on, and then Celaena would just always be residing by Sam or Nehemiaâs graves for the rest of eternity bc no one, not even Aelin thought to truly acknowledged that she was dead bc Aelin didnât think it was possible for Celaena to become her own person after she died and everyone else didnât like Celaena enough to try it
⢠itâs possible that Aelin has two carrenems, bc we know Rowan is one of them but we saw in the part where her and Dorian killed the king both of their magics worked together in a similar way, so itâs possible Dorian could also have a similar kind of thing with her but the reason itâs partly different is bc heâs human and doesnât have some of the advanced abilities fae do.
â˘I fully believe that Aelin and Manon treat Elide like a divorced parents kid, Manon and the witches get her on the weekends, Aelin and her court get her on the weekdays
â˘friendly reminder that Gavriel couldâve used his magic to hold back the valg while he went through the gate but decided to stay behind because he couldnât live thinking his son hated him
⢠I feel like Aelin has one small scar that survived Maeve and itâs a small scar on her cheek (which wouldâve been covered by the mask) that she got from Arobynn absolutely back handing her and she got cut by a ring on his finger
⢠I can image Aelin being absolutely shit at social cues because Arobynn raised her practically separate from other people for the first few years apart from training with the other assassins in the guild sometimes and when heâd send her on assignments. Rowan realized that quickly and whenever they are in a situation where sheâs not picking up certain looks or gestures Rowan just sends down the bond a little reminder to help her
â˘friendly reminder that Aelinâs fingers were slightly crooked in places before Maeve took her
â˘We also always had foreshadowing that Elide would end up with lorcan bc Anneith always is protecting Elide and whispering to her, Anneith is the consort to Hellas, and Hellas blessed Lorcan
â˘I feel like a core memory for manon would be when Lysandra threw up valg guts on lorcan
â˘I can imagine Aelin going to Rowan asking if he can cut into her back and pull out shards of iron that got caught in her skin bc Yrene was busy and then Rowan just being like a dear in headlights at the request so manon just strolls up and uses her nail like a scalpel and prying out shards of iron that Aelinâs Fae healing couldnât get out bc Manon is fr a girls girl
â˘A reminder that when Aelin ran for the wall when she was âescapingâ Endovier and when she was âescapingâ from Carin. She never planned on escaping either, she planned to have them kill her so she could insure theyâd never see her break
â˘Manon if she could use the internet:
If my boyfriend turns into a girl and I have sex with him does that make me queer?
â˘If memory works the same for the Fae as they do for humans Aelin will eventually forget what Sam looked like and what his voice sounded like
⢠After Celaena was sent to Endovior she lost the sheet music Sam gave her and sheâs constantly guilty because it was the only gift from him she had apart from his clothes in their flat
â˘Rowan is Aelinâs mate.
But Sam was Celeanas
â˘I feel like when Lysandra get into an argument with Aedion and then when Aedion says some stupid shit she just shifts into his body and repeats what he said in a sarcastic/mocking tone
â˘When lorcan bound him and Elides life together instead of making him have a mortal lifespan it made her have an immortal life span.
ââââââââââââââââââââââââ
Anyway thatâs all for now, sorry for the shit grammar I didnât proofread

***** ToG Spoilers *****
I know we mention a lot that the phrase ânameless is my priceâ is used by a lot of people / things when referring to Aelin, but tell me how I never realised and havenât seen anyone talk about how in Crown of Midnight when Celaena goes to ask Yellowlegs about the Wyrdkey riddle that even Yellowlegs says nameless is my price, and then tries to kill her.

Lorcan defense: The Maeve scene
I'd seen a post that said some of this and I can't remember who'd posted it but I thought it was really well worded and if you ever see this op feel free to comment who you are. Anyway... The Maeve scene in EOS. I NEVER HATED LORCAN FOR THIS AND I'LL EXPLAIN WHY:
We have everyone hating Lorcan because he doesnât like Aelin and isnât loyal to her. We have everyone acting like Lorcan betrayed Aelin by calling to Maeveâ as if everyone wasnât fully aware (because Lorcan has never once tried to hide it) that he is fully loyal to Maeve. You cannot betray your enemy by aiding with your master.
Am I saying that he has good judgement? Hell no! Maeve is a scheming evil Valg queen. But Gavriel is ALSO still loyal to her. And so are the other Cadre, excluding Fenrys. Lorcan merely showed Maeve the same loyalty that Aedion would show Aelin. A blind loyalty that isnât good for anyone to possess. And yes, Lorcan royally fucked Aelin over by getting her captured by Maeve, and since Aelin is the main character, it is natural to side with her.
But honestly, Lorcan did everything a good soldier would do. He is trying to save his queenâs soul by destroying the Wyrdkeys. He is trying to save the girl he promised to protect. He is staying true to his blood oaths and promises and he has promised NOTHING to Aelin. And Aelin royally fucked up by not telling anyone her plans and letting them all sweat thinking they were about to be under attack. And yes, she did it because she didnât want to disappoint anyone, but she still made a mistake in not confiding in her court.
That being said, Rowan has every right to want to murder Lorcan for her capture. But thereâs a certain level of bias to that that I think is good to remember as readers. We are angry at Lorcan for hurting a character we love, but I donât think heâs done anything morally unforgivable. He did what he thought he had to for his people, his queen, and the girl he loves. ...and Elide punished him enough (but Lorcan still helped her during her periods because she might hate him but he still wanted his girl to be ok *sobs*), plus Lorcan did everything in his power to make up for it. He SOBBED when Rowan said, "Where is my wife?" THIS BATTLE-HARDENED 500 YO WARRIOR SOBBED. HE LOVES HIS BROTHER ROWAN. HE KNOWS HOW MUCH LOSING LYRIA HURT. HE NEVER WANTED THIS FOR HIM. NEVER. THEN WHEN HE SAW AELIN AGAIN HE SOBBED. AGAIN. THE FIRST TWO TIMES HE HAD SOBBED IN HUNDREDS OF YEARS AND IT WAS FOR ROWAN AND AELIN. *and now I'm crying because I remember Elide called him a monster despite all that and he did not deserve that idc I'm a Lorcan apologist*

A whole new world
Azriel x TOG!reader
PT 2
AN: This part will mainly be some backstory, and of course Azriel scenes, hope you enjoy
''Mamma ! Mamma! Come look what I just did! '' my mother's head pokes up from the berry bush she was currently picking from a frown present on her face ''Y/n my baby there is no need to shout, you'll scare of the little folk'' my mother scolds me as she walks towards where I am currently sitting by the river '' Now what is you wanted to show me ? '' l left up my hand and open my palm, my tongue sticks out in concentration, then in my palm appears a cluster of stars, I grin up as my mother , filled with joy about what I can do, but as I look in my mothers face my grin falls and my excitement slowly turns into confusion '' Did I do something wrong Mamma ?'' my mother looks me in the eye ''Y/n you must promise to never show or even tell anyone of this , do you understand me? Especial not your father. '' ''But why? it's magic you have magic and so the fae and they do it. why can't-'' ''Because their are really bad people right now ,who will come and take you away from me if they so you must promise to never show anyone your magic alright?" '' I promise Mamma''
I wake from my memory with a groan, I still remember that day, the fear in my mother's eyes as she realized that her daughter had magic, a very special and rare magic. I lift my palms together and summon the stars to my palms and a soft smile graces my face, I close my hands and make the stars disappear , I feel an old ache in my heart at the memory of my mother and how she had taught me in secret in our mountain home how to wield my magic and keep it hidden.
I stand up and head to the dresser to find something to wear when I find my outfit I wore when I fell into this world washed and clean, so i head to the bathroom and changed. As I finished braiding my hair out of my face there is a knock at the door and I hear Azriel's voice say '' I'm here to take you to Amren's apartment , she had a look last night and she found some books that may help you'' I feel some relief rising, I might be able to go home soon '' I'm coming'' as I open the door Azriel is waiting , he has a soft smile on his face , his hair looks like he has just been flying and I cant help but admire his face , how the morning light hits his eyes where I can see flecks of gold, he is looking at me to and I can a slight blush creep on my face as I look away. Azriel clears his throat '' We will have to fly to the apartment , will carry you-'' ''Fly?!'' I ask in shock ''Yes fly unless you want to walk 10 000 steps...'' I look at him my mouth slightly parted '' I think flying sounds better'' he gives me a crooked smile and leads me to a balcony ''alright I'm going to put one arm under your knees and the other around your back'' he look at me as if asking permission I give him a small nod as he lifts me in his arms and shots off into the sky.
I give off a scream as I wrap my arms around his neck and burry my face their, feel more then hear him laugh, '' it's alright I won't drop you, look'' I feel him say into my ear and as I slowly take my head away from his neck my breath taken from me, the city under us looks so beautiful , I don't know where to look. ''. The rest of the flight is quiet as I take in the city, it seems so peaceful that I wonder f we will have such peacefulness back home or if it still stands if Erawan has taken it already.
Azriel lands in front of a building and sets me down, and leads the way in. When we enter Amrens attic apartment and, it's a mess. there are things lying everywhere and the bed looks as if it hasn't been made since the dawn of time. ''It's always like this'' Azriel whispers in my ear, I look at him from the corner of my eye and give him a nervous huff of breath.
''So girl how is it that you came here to our world? '' I look at Amren who is sitting cross legged on a pillow by a low lying table ''We used wyrdkeys and then we jumped through a door and we started falling through different worlds and then I ended up falling into this world and now I'm here'' Amren looks at me and hums, '' well then make yourself usefull and start looking through these books , they are all I could find about world travel, and you can return to your master'' she says towards Azriel who only glares at her before leavng.
I look at the books lying on the table and pick one up that looks like one my mother had, as I start to read through it a memory comes up in my head.
''You don't understand the power this book holds, I can't just let you take.'' It was the first time in months that my father came to visit and this book had caught his attention '' I promise no one will read it but me Emalyn.'' my mother has her no nonsense face on and replies with a stern ''no'' my father was about to argue when he catches a glimpse of me from behind the door '' sneaking and listening to others conversations are we my little star'' he looks and me and opens his arms for me.
As I continue reading a chapter tittle catches my eye '' WORLD WALKING'' and as I read the chapter is talks about a fae Elder named Elias, who had the magic to open up a portal to other worlds, he was the one who had brought fae to other worlds, with this magic oh his, on the next page there was a picture of him opening a portal with these signs that looked almost like wyrd marks but also so very different. '' I think I might have found something, what do you know of this Elder Fae Elias? '' Amren looks up from her own book and says '' Elias is mostly a children's bed time story, that chapter you just read is the Adult version of the story'' '' could it not be true ? '' '' No, for many people have tried and drawn those marks of his and nothing has happened, as I've said it's a children's bed time story, I don't even remember bringing that book with me. Don't waste your time with that book''
As the day goes by we find nothing that would be able to help me home. The door opens and in comes Azriel '' Any luck ? '' he only gets two heads shaking as his answer. '' we should perhaps send a letter to Helion asking if he could not help us'' Amren says to Azriel, he nods and over a hand to me, I take it and stretch out. ''I will ask Rhys if he could send a letter to Helion tonight, good night Amren'' he says as he turns and I give the female a wave goodbye and head with Azriel to the House Of Wind.
We had dinner and all went to our own rooms for the night, as I sit in the bath I help but think back about the book and what my mother said about it. My mother had always said to me that I was never to touch any of those books she had in her bed room unless of an emergency, and when she died that night magic went away those books where no longer on her shelf and when I asked my father about them he said it was for 13 year old girls to worry about and I never had the nerve to ask about them again, though now I wonder if it was Erawan who had taken the books in hopes to use those marks instead of the wyrdkeys.
As I get out from the bath and get dressed I find myself walking to the kitchen for a snack but as I enter I see Azriel already there eating a cupcake '' oh I'm so sorry I didn't mean to disturb your cupcake eating'' Azriel looks at me and says '' it's alright, you may join if you'd like'' he holds out a cupcake to me, I smile and take the cupcake from him ''Thank you'' we eat our cupcakes in a comfortable silence.
''You have some icing on your lip'' Azriel breaks the silence I wipe at my lips and look at him '' did I get it? '' he huffs a laugh and lifts his thumb to my mouth '' no here let me'' he swipes his thumb over my lip, his eyes are fixed on my lips as he continues to run his thumb along them. Hs eyes lift to mine as he leans in slowly, he brushes his lips against mine in question, my eyes flutter shut as I lean in , the kiss is soft and gentle, his hand goes and cups my jaw and I feel his tongue against my lips asking for permission, I grant him access and the kiss gets heated, he pulls back only to start a trail of kisses down my neck and as he kisses where my neck meets my shoulder I release a sound I've never made before and left m hands to his hair. He says against my skin ''you make such beautiful noises I can't wait to hear-'' then there was a sound of a plate crashing to the floor, I gasp , feeling embaressed to be caught in such position, I can feel the blush rising from my neck up to my face, my lips still swollen from the kissing.
It's Elain standing at the door a smashed plate at her feet ''Oh I'm so sorry for interrupting , I was just brining this plate back, I'll leave you two know'' as she leaves out the door the broken plate disappears. I turn back to Azriel, his lips are swollen just as mine, his hair messy from my hands '' it's getting late, we should go to bed, I have to get up early to help with training '' ''right yes of course , can I be present during training, I need to keep in shape '' Azriel looks at me blush evident on his cheek '' You are more then welcomes to join training, I'll get you early tomorrow before training so that you may get ready'' and with that he leaves the kitchen.
My dreams that night was filled with the story of Elias and his marks to travel worlds

I Beg Your Pardon...WHAT Was That Cliffhanger!?
Sarah J. Maas is seriously going to make me sit through Chaol's Desert Adventure before she resolves the cliffhanger of this book, and quite frankly? That is just RUDE. Let's talk Empire of Storms.
This is your SPOILER WARNING and I'm going to spoil the end in like the first sentence after the cut, so if you're not through this book, this is your last chance to scroll by.
Holy gods Aelin is good at 4D chess and thinking on her feet in a clinch, because despite Maeve putting her in an iron box, she kept the wyrdkeys, Elide, and Terrasen's future safe. (I told you I was going to spoil the end.) Girl figured out that because Elena screwed up, she would have to die to keep the world safe from Erawan and the Valg, so what does she do? She secures her kingdom's future, gives Aedion and Rowan and army with which to win the war, and even gets Lysandra involved to give Terrasen a royal bloodline. Like...I am seriously impressed by what Aelin managed to pull together. And she did it without help or input from her court because she's so tied up in it only ever being her who pays the price.
A price that Maeve is bound and determined to add one hell of a tax to...Faerie Queens are historically somewhat fraught figures, but this Maeve is one hell of a stone-cold bitch. She is also damn good at identifying wounds and applying pressure to them, so pretty much everyone who loves Aelin is absolutely devastated at the end of this book. There is an impending war, a deception to uphold, a rescue to enact, and a Valg king to destroy. And yet I still have to sit through Chaol's book before ANY of that and I am so salty about it. (Yes, I was aware of the tandem read option. I chose not to because that is so much unnecessary effort.)
Empire of Storms was super plot-heavy though; SO MUCH happened in this book. So let's dig into that a bit, and try to take it peice by peice.
Elorcan
Ok, so if I thought Elide was a bit damp in the last book, she got BADASS this book. This poor girl was abandoned, locked away, and finally given a chance to escape at the cost of Kaltain's life.
And I'm just going to take a second here to say that Kaltain got one hell of a raw deal. Girl was a bit of a bitch and out for money, but she absolutely did not deserve to end up at Erawan's mercy like that. Kaltain absolutely deserves justice. It's not just the stabby and stubborn girls who deserve to be treated with respect and care.
But Elide runs into Lorcan early in this book, and the two of them sort of...quietly accidentally fall into a relationship. It's one of those where you kind of have to tilt your head and squint, because its just...I mean if it works for them, then fine, but wow these are two deeply traumatized people and the trauma bond to relationship pipeline is SUPER odd.
We have Lorcan ceding authority right off the bat and letting Elide lead, he uses his magic to brace her bad ankle, she is giving him crap every five minutes, he's tearing up his shirt to make her pads, and ultimately they work to keep each other safe. Right up until Lorcan fucks it all up by summoning Maeve and handing Aelin over. Which Elide is taking SUPER personally because her mother died buying Aelin time to get out when Terrasen fell. And also because Lorcan lied to her. It's really fucked up in the BEST way, because it's clear that Lorcan and Elide are down BAD for each other, but Lorcan still thinks he's in love with Maeve. Who then immediately kicks him yo the curb because she can see what's plainly out in the open in front of her eyes, even if Lorcan can't.
I actually really enjoyed watching Elide and Lorcan figure out crossing paths with Aelin. He's grumpy and traumatized AF, and pretty much against his will and better judgement, he gloms onto this little lost girl. And his confidence and support gives her the courage and feeling of safety to actually grow into her own badassery. It's adorable, which makes his betrayal make me want to headdesk into oblivion. Like...Lorcan. SIR. You put all your plans on hold, walked into danger, and killed multiple people to keep Elide safe and happy. You seriously think Maeve is still the most important woman in your life???
Lorcan desperately needs therapy, but my god it's fun to watch him ruin his life.
Manian (and Also the Witches Generally)
Dorian and Manon are in the running against Aedion and Lysandra for best couple in Throne of Glass, especially since they're both deeply prickly, deeply wounded, and deeply ready to hop into bed with each other instead of dealing with the prickles and wounds.
Dorian is already protective as hell over Manon, despite his all-too-recent losses, trauma, and the fact that he's currently a king in exile. Which actually I think he's handling decently well--his little chat with Rowan about losing a loved one worked beautifully, and he is smart enough to ask for help with his magic. Although if the bigass battles with the Ilken and Maeve's fleet at the end are any indication, he's fine. He's just a fire hydrant of power, similar to Aelin.
Manon is...having a ROUGH TIME this book. Her grandmother keeps trying to murder Asterin, she keeps having this really inconvenient conscience, and it finally comes to a head when her grandmother disowns her after coming within about a quarter inch of disembowling her. It's really lucky that Abraxos is as smart as he is darling, because finding Aelin is pretty much the only reason Manon survives. And Abraxos gets all the wildlflowers he wants for being the goodest boi. He not only saves Manon's life, he also tracks down the thirteen and reunites everyone.
These parts of the book were honestly just delightful to read, and I am a fan of Manon and Dorian.
Aedion's Daddy Issues
Hoo boy, ok. Aedion has every right to have a METRIC TON of trauma, given his life. So to add daddy issues to his childhood, teenage, and adult trauma, his stress about not having an army or allies, and some feels for Lysandra is a LOT. And even Aedion is surprised by the depth of the emotion of his reaction to Gavriel showing back up in his life.
Thing is, though? Even if it's largely background and subtextual, we do get Gavriel and Aedion getting...if not reconciled, then accustomed to each other, and they work well together. I'm actually massively curious to see how their relationship continues to evolve now that Maeve has severed the blood oath to Gavriel and Aelin has been captured and Aedion has found out that she volunteered him to make babies with Lysandra to pass off as the Terrasen heirs and royal family.
Which...I get why she did it. But AELIN. DARLING. Guys have bodily autonomy too, and you can't just VOLUNTEER your cousin and your best friend as stud and brood mare, respectively.
My guess is Gavriel has some experience with serving a powerful, capricious woman who doesn't always tell you the whole plan, so if we don't get that conversation at some point, I will riot.
Lysandra Being the Best Ever
Lysandra is the best secondary character in these books, full stop. Our girl has really come into her own with her shape shifting, as we see in both Skull Bay and the battle with Maeve's fleet. She has to figure out a truly unique magic basically on her own, she is asked to go into battle in shapes she hasn't had a whole hell of a lot of time to practice with, and yet by the end of the book, she is MIXING AND MATCHING TRAITS to create an effective murder form that is capable of taking out fae ships.
And this is WHILE she is backing up Aelin's 4D chess shenangins, periodically messing with Aedion, supporting Aedion emotionally, and getting over her own trauma. Lysandra is the unsung queen of this series, and frankly she deserves 1000% of the credit for everything she does. Especially the popping up over random people's shoulders as a ghost leopard. Because I too would use that ability to scare the ever-loving shit out of people for funsies. We have to find our fun where we can during a war.
NOT TO MENTION that Lysandra is entirely willing to take not one, not two, but SEVERAL for the team. Aelin fully asks Lysandra to 1) impersonate her for the rest of Lysandra's life, 2) be fake married to Rowan and help rule Terrasen, 3) let Aedion impregnate her multiple times with children she will have to pass off as Rowan's to give Terrasen a legitimate bloodline, and 4) deal with Rowan and Aedion's lifelong grief and trauma over losing Aelin. That's a SIGNIFICANT ask, and Lysandra is full-on over here like, "Yeah, I'll do that, and sure, I'll also keep this plan secret from Rowan and Aedion until you're dead or as good as dead." Lysandra does not get enough credit for her role in this book, and this is me giving her all the credit.
Aelin Playing 4D Chess
Aelin gets so much credit for being stupid competent as an assassin. She gets weirdly less credit for her ability to play 4D chess. Because the LITERAL MINUTE she realizes that she's doomed to die to win the war and yeet Erawan back into whatever void he came from, she is calling in every chip and favor she can to get Terrasen an army that has a chance of winning the war. But she's also thinking long-term. She knows that for Terrasen to survive, it needs a royal family and legitimate bloodline, and she wrangles that too by legally marrying Rowan, and roping in Lysandra and Aedion to produce the crotch goblins that will pass as "hers" and Rowan's.
In addition, she is clocking Lorcan's betrayal and planning around it, ensuring that she can keep the wyrdkeys safe, and getting her people out of a REALLY Bad situation. Quite literally, Aelin's competence is just insane and I love that she is allowed to be this competent. It should get talked about more.
Seriously, That Ending
It is a truth universally acknowledged that the last 200 pages of a Sarah J. Maas book will contain approximately 70% of the plot and 85-95% of the emotional angst of the story. That holds EXTREMELY true for Empire of Storms. The entire showdown with Maeve and its aftermath was devastating for everyone, reader included. I full-on got teary when Aelin told Elide that her mother would be proud of her, and wanted to deck Lorcan SO HARD. Gavriel is going to need SO MUCH THERAPY after that nonsense, and I think Aelin and Aedion are going to need to literally just fight it out once she's safely retrieved.
Also, the "Rowan and Aelin were married for like two days" reveal was...a whole thing. Like...it potentially could feel a little contrived, but honestly I'd be lying if I said I wasn't invested and kicking my little feeties in joy over the angst. So as an ending, HELL YES. As a cliffhanger with a WHOLE OTHER BOOK before I get resolution on the Maeve and the iron box thing? JAIL. JAIL FOR SJM FOR 1000 YEARS.
We Just Briefly Need to Talk About Ripping Off Tolkien and Robert Jordan
Siiiiiiiiiiiiigh. Y'know guys... The bare amount of credit I am willing to give here is that clearly SJM has done her reading. You can't rip off the giants of the fantasy genre without READING the giants of the fantasy genre, and she's clearly read Tolkien and Robert Jordan. I just... she didn't even bother RENAMING the dead marshes. It's just...hotter and missing the phantom bodies. It's almost like she mashed up the dead and midgewater marshes but make them tropical.
And then we come to the box. The iron box in which the bad guys keep the super magical chosen one. Which is quite literally what happens to Rand Al'Thor in Lord of Chaos. Which like...I'm low-key over here going "WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY????" Because now I'm just expecting the last book to be Dumai's Wells in Throne of Glass drag.
I realize that homage and allusion are standard in literature. And honestly it's fine. Except that I have been around the block with SJM enough to be DEEPLY SUSPICIOUS of this. So we'll see.

Finished Heir of Fire:
Rowan really grew on me. I knew that the hawk at the beginning of the book had to be someone spying on her and it was him.
Sorscha. Sweet, sweet Sorscha.
I love Aedion. I hated him (obviously) at first but then when it was revealed what his true nature was, it was immediately love.
I'm so broken over Chaol and Dorian's friendship, but also the fact that Dorian is now under a Wyrdkey!!!
And Manon! The new additions to the story had me wondering what SJM was doing by introducing them. I actually like her a lot. Abraxos reminds me of Toothless.
However I draw the line at Luca, Emerys and Malakai. If anything happens to them, I will riot.
And Celaena, or should I say Aelin Ashryver Galathynius! The Queen you will become. I have high, high hopes for her.
Notable Mentions
- Asterin.
- Keelie and Petrah.
Fuck Maeve, the King, Bas, Manon's grandma, Iskra.

âKaltain Rompier had just turned the tide in this war. Dorian had never been more ashamed of himself. He should have been better. Should have seen better. They all should have.â - Sarah J Maas, Empire of Storms
I am so fucking emo about Kaltain. The absolute GENIUS to take a minor antagonist from the first book and give her this incredible ending⌠what a time. Kaltain has always been one of my favorite characters because of how deeply complex and STRONG she is. She survived MONTHS of torture, assault, and carrying a fucking Wyrdkey in her body and used that power to sacrifice herself for the greater good. When the last time she saw all the good guys they were belittling her. Your honor, i love her.

But first....... Lucien âď¸đĽ
Thoughts slammed into me, images and memories, a pattern of thinking and feeling that was old, and clever, and sad, so endlessly sad and guilt-ridden, hopelessâ
"all the sounds that Lucien so carefully sorted through while he kept watch."
Like Rhys, he usually opted for words to win his battles.
âI trust in the fact that we currently have possession of the one thing he wants above all else. And as long as that remains, heâll try to stay on our good side. But if that changes âŚ"
"His talent was wasted in the Spring Court."
"There was a reason he had that fox mask, you know."
No wonder heâd been so eager to head alone into Velaris that day heâd gone to help us research. I shot a look at Rhys. Seems like Lucien can still play the fox.
âLucien canât be entirely trusted anymore.â. âLucien might mean well, but any reports would be skewedâeven if he isnât aware of itâin their favor.
Lucien stared out the windowâas if he could see the lake across a sea and a continent. As if he were setting his target.
âEyes can be blinded,â Nesta said. âNot the ones under my command,â Azriel said with soft menace.
"Lucien will never be good enough"
âThere are others in your court as delusional as you are. Theyâll get it for me one way or another, with the right incentive.
I'd be surprised if we don't get a super clever scheme in Elucien's book, courtesy of Lucien.
SJM has previously said Dorian and Lucien would be great friends and we know that Dorian was not only extremely powerful with raw power that be could shape as he desired but he was also very cunning. In KOA, he took two of the Wyrdkeys and tracked down Maeve to find the third. Maeve asked Dorian to work with her, explaining that she wants the keys so she can get rid of Erawen and his brothers for good.
Dorian agrees, asking her to bring the spiders to his side and he will marry her, giving her a new Kingdom to rule over.
In a later chapter, Maeve slips into Dorians mind, using her powers to control him but the entire time he's been tricking her, using her own power against her (a Valg!) to learn how hers actually work, taking over her mind instead.
There's already notable similarities between Dorian and Lucien, their polished persona's, their fathers both had them held down and forced them to watch the execution of the woman they loved, unknown magical powers, hints at Lucien being extremely powerful as Dorian was powerful, and their intelligence.
SJM has also pointed out how Rhys and Lucien share a likeness in how they use their words to fight battles and we know Rhys often schemes, having others question his intentions only to find out he had some wildly clever plot going the whole time.
I could easily see her having Lucien do something similar. Maybe he'll have a plan for Koschei or the Human Queens that he didn't inform the others of, something Elain becomes suspicious about and starts following him (Mr. and Mrs. Smith anyone? It would be even better if this followed the arranged marriage trope đ).
The others acknowledge Lucien is clever and insightful yet they still underestimate him. You can tell they look at him as a tool for when it benefits their own purpose rather than viewing him as an equal, a force to be reckoned with.
I'd also love if it led to Az eating a bit of humble pie. He's so certain of Lucien being unworthy, imagine if Lucien managed to outsmart Az and his shadows.
