The Magistrates Diary ♡ Entry 1

Menu - Diary - Archive Date - 23rd May 2024 - contains spoilers See end of entry for important notes !

My Journey began at 4:08 am, after loading and veryfiying. I made a Whatsapp chat to record all of this :D The intro cutscene reminded me a lot of the unknown god scene from genshin. (I apologize for the comparisons to hoyogames, that how I connect info and make it go into my brain-)

The animations are beautiful and the goddess is etheral. I picked the female rover! cuz i thought the short hair looked so cool and then i noticed she joined the rat tail gang :/

Running around was so fun and Yangyang and chixia are adorable. I almost freaked out when I first saw Baizhi, she's so pretty.

One thing I noticed almost immediately is that the dialoge is really messy (cut off, fading out ??).

But the animation when they talk is so nice, like it has variety and not just the same two Expressions for every character, it gives them more charm.

AND I found the skip button - I told myself not to abuse it tho cuz I wanna know the story and understand everything.

I love that we have an actual name in the game for now like i love rover sm.

The thing about me finding out about Echos: "Oh i unlocked echos hihi!" "no echo for me :(" "WHAT" "ECHO FOR ME?"

I absorbed the echo with my body and was SO confused.

The OST is so cool and nice to listen to. I almost exploded over their facial expressions.

THEN I FELL IN LOVE no seriously, I met Jinhsi

I got invested in the story, finding out we're important to the nation and becoming friends with Chixia and Yangyang! I also slowly got used to combat, especially enjoyign the echo abilities! The turtle is super fun.

THEEEEEN I FOUND OUT ABOUT THE DOUBLE JUMP - best thing that ever happened.

short environment rant before I continue!! I love the way the open world feels so far! it's amazing to see a seemingly normal open world with little oddities and familiar entities! like the enemies can be turtles, shrooms and random floaty things or stone golems. Some of the animals I saw so far were obviously birds, lizards and fish but there's also rabbits and goats running around which I find really cute.

the design of the world feels really nice too like the colors aren't like "boom in your face!" but rather bend well. Things like the villages and the huge cherry tree stand out that way and I love that so far. and it feels so peaceful and immersing?? Does that make sense??

I found out how to increase stamina and i can run up walls!!! It's amazing, as well as the dodging ability. I was playing honkai impact just hours before the release so i was already used to evasion skills hihi!!

Another thing that started bothering me is that the dialog of the main story is kind of repetitive and doesn't feel that natural (yet), but I think it's due to the localization issues kurogames had before. I'm sure It'll get better soon!

3 hours in, I got my very first 5 Star

I planned to save my limited banner pulls for future characters bc i think the guy looks kinda goofy- "I hope jinshi is limited and available soon🫶🏻"

At 11 am I lit up the entire map except the top part :D

I got used to playing Encore, since I'm a Yanfei main I found she feels kinda similiar", and its really fun!!!!!!

Then I came up with my goals for this patch but I'm in no way pressuring myself to meet them or play because I want this game to stay fun! FUN!!!

In Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail I (used to) collect all the 4 stars and i was thinking about doing that too in WuWa but I'm not sure about that yet since I actually have no pressure/desire to pull.

I continued the main story and met Jianxin, she's so cool!!

"I just noticed that all the black haired girls so far have like colored hair parts and I was thinking that it aligns with their element? but rover is spectra (currently) so idk? but also everyone kind of has elements colored hair- lemme verify that" ↳ okay so hair theory only partly fits

Every resonator has the tacet discord mark? as far as I can tell (yes genius did you pay attention?)

my team so far is Encore, rover/yangyang and baizhi and once I get jianxin I'll replace rover / yangyang probably

I fought my first "big" boss - caraspace engine zero, no death + achievement!! or rather "Trophy"!

Yangyang is a midnight ranger, like chixia, okay!!

Did some more story and got lore dumps! There's a voice inside us?

Also it's so cool that yangyang can feel stuff in the wind please do more with that!! We can read tacet discord coordinates?? Yangyang can also hear in the wind?? that ahhh so cool

I desperately want more elemental lore, it's so interesting!

We met scar - "Mr bad man Mr Scar okay he's the bad guy??" "Yangyang found a cat and vanished" "Mr bad guy is a little insane" "his eyes are freaky" "WHY DOES HE KNOW ABOUT OUR BACK STORY" "HIS NAILS ARE SO LONG FOR WHAT"

"I KNEW IT THEY'RE ALL SUSSY" "lowkey I trust him with the lore dumps but not so much with him wanting to be our friend" "he's possessive girl get a grip" (lowkey he's so flirty and hot and ngh) "okay I think he's really not lying, like I said, not friend, but a reliable source. gonna call him Mr lore!" "Jinhsi is in on it too girl what are you doing?" "So Mr lore wants equality between the resonators and normal humans?"

The story book tale is actually so cool and while I as playing i tried to understand and puzzle the pieces together! " The black lamb was their scapegoat… they sacrificed her… but there's a black goat in the back still. The flock blamed someone again after the shepherd stopped granting wishes. The village is guilty of their own greed."

It turned out that Scar wasn't the shepherd and I never suspected as such, he seems more like a black lamb himself!

Then he trapped us in his Elysium, which is an interesting ability. I don't know if you guys have the same "problem?" but I'm so fast at beating the enemies that the voicelines are too slow. I haven't even leveled the weapons and echos.

We met scars companion? The spider lily girl. Her voice is adorable and she's soo cool!!! The character designs in general are amazing.

So Yangyang is sus of scar and eventhough I'm as well, I still think he is right in some aspects and the story book like tale he told holds at least some meaning and is mostly true.

SANHUA FOLLOWED US?? I KNEW SHE WAS STILL INVOLVED!

ok so I found a diary in the quest which basically confirms what scar told me. okay done with I act III, dailies unlocked!!! I need to reach Union Level 14 to continue which was to be expected!

Im gonna spend some of my wave plates and them I'll log off for today. I feel like I got a vague understanding of the world and the mechanics so far and I really don't need to overdo it since I wanna have fun with the game going forward!!!

Gameplay: - I don't like the camera lock on feature - puzzles so far are simple enough so I can familiarize myself with the world but interesting enough to be fun if that makes sense - mutterflies are basically seelies - found my first parallel perception cave and that's one fun game mode, I beat with with just one second over the 3 "star" mark so I did it first try!! - decryption puzzle 10/10 - Fragile block has actual physics and collapsed onto me 💯/💯 - the cooking is cool too, it's just auto cooking but at least you have a skill thingy - Theres no underground map for the qichi village cave but that's just some spoilt genshin kid nitpicking on my end

Plot holes (or i didnt pay attention properly, please correct me!!): - why do we know jianxins name? like we just started calling her master jianxin?

finished up the 1.4 story of wuthering waves couple nights ago. Honestly I think the way they used the somnoire side plot to tie up loose ends on the character arcs was pretty clean.

It's a fairly common complaint towards gacha game stories that everything feels bloated as they are obligated to include too many characters, they have to sell the characters to the audience and make them want to roll for them but at the same time the stories don't necessarily have the space for such large casts. It's not uncommon for characters to get neglected past their initial introduction as the story moves on without them. The challenge to find ways to introduce new characters, advance the plot, and somehow involve older cast members, it's a difficult balance to strike.

For those who don't play wuwa, the somnoire is an alternate dimension formed from people's subconscious. Every patch of the game since launch has had an optional sidequest involving having to enter it to quell disruptions there. Storywise it's not very deep, because it was mostly an excuse for the game to be able to include a rougelike-ish gameplay mode.

And now that I've laid out the story problem and the means that were used to mitigate it one after the other, I feel kind of dumb for not predicting this sooner. But to be fair to me it was just one minor sidequest of several dozen so I didn't consider myself to have reason to linger on it. But anyway the main plot of the 1.4 patch involved the somnoire exploding into the real world and sucking in a bunch of people's consciousnesses inside, including several playable characters. The mc is able to explore their dreams from the inside, and has to go through old memories in order to recruit them to fight the new antagonist. Story wise, fairly neat way to make "recap the deals of various characters who hadn't been seen for more than a cameo in months and show where they are now" simultaneous with "create a threat the protagonist has to fight." A fairly blunt and unsubtle way to go about it but that's not necessarily a negative. Felt like a nice send-off for almost everybody the players had met, which makes the whole thing feel like a satisfying conclusion to 1.X and the whole jinzhou arc.

Caladin: Draft of his Kit

As promised^^

No promise the numbers are scaled in anyway balanced- I don’t have a good grasp of buffing and scaling on the numbers side, so feel free to make suggestions.

Wrath (normal attack):

Caladin makes 6 consecutive melee attacks dealing Spectro damage equivalent to 90% of his ATK. Basic attacks accumulate stacks of “Vengeance.”

Heavy Attacks: consume a certain amount of stamina to deal single target Spectro damage equal to 115% of Caladin’s ATK and minor aoe Spectro damage.

Animation idea: A parting the seas kind of motion in which Cal brings his hands together and up before pulling them down off to his sides, creating a cone of Spectro energy around him.

Mid-air Attack: consumes a certain amount of stamina to perform a mid-air attack that deals aoe Spectro damage equal to 75% of Caladin’s ATK

Animation idea: Dropkick :3

Solar Flare (Resonance Skill)

Produces a field of swirling Spectro orbs that orbit the onfield Resonator, pulling enemies in and dealing consistent Spectro damage for 15 seconds that is equal to 75% of Caladin’s ATK.

Golden Hour (Forte)

Stacks a condition called “Vengeance” upon usage of Wrath and its variants, including basic attacks, heavy attacks, and mid-air attacks.

Upon collecting the first stack of “Vengeance”, Caladin regenerates (x) amount of energy.

A max of 12 stacks can be accumulated at once and can be done every 2 seconds. (?)

Stacks of “Vengeance” clear upon triggering Daylight’s Glory.

Clearing stacks of “Vengeance” applies party wide ATK and Crit Rate buffs per stack cleared.

A maximum of a 40% ATK buff and 12% Crit Rate buff can be acquired

Daylight’s Glory (Resonance Liberation)

Attacks a main target dealing massive Spectro damage equivalent to 270% of Caladin’s ATK and minor aoe Spectro damage.

Clears all stacks of “Vengeance” and applies a party wide buff that last 30 seconds with Caladin off field, and 40 seconds of Caladin spends at least 10 seconds on field after triggering Daylight’s Glory.

Caladin’s basic attack, Wrath, is greatly enhanced and becomes “Rage.”

Animation idea: we see a close up of Caladin’s face, his eyes are glowing and we see a foreshortened version of his hand come into scene. It flashes to a view of light bursting through seams of his fingers as though he grabs the enemy by the face and incinerates them :3

Rage (Enhanced Basic Attack)

Performs 6 consecutive melee attacks dealing Spectro damage equal to 200% of Caladin’s ATK. All Heavy Attacks and Mid-Air attacks are treated as basic attack damage and receive designated buffs as though they were basic attacks.

Rage lasts 30 seconds. (??)

Dawn’s Breath (Intro Skill)

Deals aoe Spectro damage equivalent to 150% of Caladin’s ATK and regenerates (x) amount of Energy for himself

Animation idea: Full blown flying out of the sky to punch the ground Haymaker vibes-

Justice at Dusk (Outro Skill)

Creates a single, stationary orb of Spectro energy that pulses and deals aoe damage equivalent to 30% of Caladin’s ATK and taunts the enemy. After 3 hits, it disperses.

Regenerates a third of the incoming Resonator’s energy. (????)

If the incoming Resonator has a fully charged Liberation, this is exchanged for a Crit Damage buff of 12%.

Inherent Skill 1

Increases Caladin’s attack by 12%

Inherent Skill 2

Increases Caladin’s energy regeneration rate by 15%

Caladin is built to be a dual DPS/Quickswap unit.

A rotation for him might be building stacks of Vengeance, Resonance Liberation, Resonance Skill, a few extra hits in with his basic, and then swap for the other DPS to benefit from his party wide buffing.

He could also work in hyper carry, but honesty I don’t know :’)

Quick fun fact: Caladin’s Forte is named Golden Hour in reminiscence of who he once was and what his Forte once felt like to him. His other skill names feel very violent in comparison.

There's just something about villains.

Namely: Kagami Naoto from Donten ni Warau (A.K.A. Laughing Under the Clouds), Griss from Fire Emblem: Engage, and Scar from Wuthering Waves, among others.

I'm not attracted to them, necessarily, like I'm attracted to my favorite characters -- probably because I find them intimidating, which, for an antagonist that's meant to pose a threat to the protagonists, is a good thing! -- but when their character design elements come together in a certain way, it gives them a distinct magnetism that scratches an itch in my brain, so to speak.

Maybe not all of it, but I think part of it comes from less pressure on villains' character designs to look beautiful or attractive. In the case of a protagonist, ideally, from the outset, an audience will like them as a character, or at least trust or empathize with them to a certain degree; therefore, a protagonist's design must leave a positive impression. When it comes to a conventional anime-type art style, then, which typically centers on idealization, with clean lines and visually appealing features, I think there can be a tendency towards a certain degree of sameness; some visual patterns will be more aesthetically appealing than others, so protagonists' designs will tend to repeatedly utilize these specific patterns within and across media.

On the other hand, while villains can be attractive and leave a positive first impression, it's not, by necessity, a function of their character, so their designs have a lot more flexibility and variation; they can utilize features and patterns that, by convention, aren't as readily available to protagonists.

(Why this is the case is its whole own separate post, so I won't go into that in-depth here. If it were solely my choice, I'd love for characters all across the protagonist-antagonist spectrum to have all sorts of physical features. 😛)

I can't help but think of one interview with Karakara Kemuri, the mangaka behind Donten, I read a few years ago. In said interview, they talked about which of their characters they found most difficult to draw and which they found easiest to draw.

Now, the art style they use for Donten is beautiful, and is the primary reason I got into the manga; they mentioned that their main characters are most difficult to draw because they have to focus on ensuring that they look beautiful.

Conversely, they cited a few characters, among which Kagami was one, that they found easiest to draw precisely because they didn't have to worry about making them look beautiful -- and the characters they mentioned were the very same ones whose designs stuck out to me because they were different from those of the other characters, and that made them interesting.

I mean, yeah, I love a beautiful protagonist, but when the main characters all kind of look the same or at least similar by virtue of having to look attractive, personally speaking, I'm much more liable to notice and remember the gremlin in the corner who's got wild-looking eyes and sharp teeth and doesn't stand up quite straight all the time (that's Kagami), or the shirtless guy covered in tattoos and piercings with a certain punch to his movements (Griss), or the guy with such a bright red hue he's in all likelihood both poisonous and venomous and whose range of facial expressions makes it look like he's constantly trying to perform to the back row of a theatre (Scar).

Those characters are distinctive, and I think the uniqueness of their designs, while not necessarily considered conventionally beautiful, gives them something analogous to attractiveness, or perhaps a different, unconventional form of attractiveness.

Like I said, if it were my choice, I'd give so many protagonists this kind of magnetism, too, but in the meantime, this can be my post where I appreciate villains.
