[Hanfu · 漢服]The past and present of "eating mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival"
As the Mid-Autumn Festival/Zhong Qiu Jie 中秋节 is coming, let us learn how “mooncakes/月饼” became an iconic traditional food of the Mid-Autumn Festival
🌕🥮Mooncake/月饼🥮🏮
A mooncake (simplified Chinese: 月饼; traditional Chinese: 月餅) is a Chinese bakery product traditionally eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節).The festival is primarily about the harvest while a legend connects it to moon watching, and mooncakes are regarded as a delicacy. Mooncakes are offered between friends or on family gatherings while celebrating the festival. The Mid-Autumn Festival is widely regarded as one of the four most important Chinese festivals.
Mooncakes were originally used as offerings to worship the moon god.
Worshiping the moon is a very old custom in China. It is actually a worship activity for the "moon god" by the ancients. Eating mooncakes and appreciating the moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival are indispensable customs for celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival in all parts of China. Mooncakes symbolize reunion. People regard them as festive food, use them to worship the moon, and give them to relatives and friends.
Cultural relics believed to be the predecessor of mooncakes were unearthed:
<China Tang Dynasty Baoxiang flower-patterned mooncakes/宝相花月饼>⬇️
Mooncakes, traditionally offered as a tribute to the Moon Goddess, have a long and rich history. The term "mooncake" was first recorded in the Southern Song Dynasty in Wu Zimu’s <梦梁录/Meng Liang Lu>.
Over time, mooncakes merged with various regional culinary traditions, giving rise to different styles such as Cantonese, Shanxi, Beijing, Suzhou, Chaozhou, and Yunnan mooncakes, all of which are beloved by people across China:
Mooncakes truly became associated with the Mid-Autumn Festival during the Ming Dynasty. In the writings of Liu Ruoyu 刘若愚, a eunuch during the reigns of the Wanli and Chongzhen emperors, he mentioned in his prison work Zhuozhong Zhi 《酌中志》(Vol. 20, "Brief Record of Culinary Preferences"): “八月宫中赏秋海棠、玉簪。自初一日起,即有卖月饼者。加以西瓜、藕,互相馈送。西苑鹿藕。至十五日,家家供月饼瓜果,候月上焚香后,即大肆饮啖,多竟夜始散席者。如有剩月饼,仍整收于干燥风凉之处,至岁暮合家分用之,曰‘团圆饼’也”
Translation:
"In August, the palace having event appreciates autumn crabapple blossoms. From the first day of the month, mooncakes are sold,it accompanied by watermelons and lotus roots, and are exchanged as gifts.By the fifteenth day, every household offers mooncakes and fruits in worship, waiting for the moon to rise before burning incense and feasting lavishly, with some gatherings lasting all night. If there are leftover mooncakes, they are stored in a dry and cool place until the end of the year, when the whole family shares them, calling them 'reunion cakes.'
In the Qing Dynasty, there were books that detailed the methods of making mooncakes. For example, Zeng Yi, a female writer and female doctor in the late Qing Dynasty, recorded the "Method of Making Crisp Mooncakes" in her book "Zhongkuilu": "Use white ash flour, half of which is steamed in a steamer, and no water vapor is seen; the other half is raw, and kneaded with lard and cold water. Then, mix the steamed flour with lard. Use a ball of raw oil flour, and wrap a small ball of cooked oil flour inside; use a rolling pin to roll it into a cup-sized shape, fold it into a square; roll it into a ball again, and fold it into a square again; then wrap the filling. Use a cake stamp to stamp it, and put it on the stove to cook. For the oil-flavored filling, use cooked flour, sugar, walnuts, etc., and add a little sesame oil, so that it will not fall apart." The method is very similar to today's Suzhou-style mooncakes.

I wrote a poem for Cold Sands danmei novel years ago, right after I finished the novel because I was so inspired by the story and it made my heart ache. Here is the poem:
Wings clipped by truth The fall swift and harsh Lies unveiled Fate strung a web of deceit A trap, snaring the victim This bird, tied down Voice cut-out -silenced Never to sing Never to cry out Never to sing its beautiful melodies once more Never to give sound to its pain The world itself, what a beautiful cage- A big and wide unknown, and sometimes deceitful place Freedom- is only a short illusory image Unobtainable- A Mirage in the desert when one is dying from thirst Just out of reach, as though grasping at sand as it slips through your fingertips And as the dark begins to unravel Twist and unwind- Mighty is the weight thrust upon the heart, Subduing its pulse, the beating drum- a strangled ba-thump...ba-thump...ba-thump... An anchor drowning the soul, Just as as heavy as one that bears a crown upon their head, No escape is possible now As the strings of fate tighten, the birds wings are broken Fragmented and shattered Unable to never fly Never again to soar the skies
(End/ Extra below)
......
Did you ever once hear the Greek tale of a boy, the boy who wanted to fly close to the sun?
His father created wings of made wax for his child and warned him, told him not to fly to high, to not fly to close to the sun.
However, the boy, Icarus, didn't listen to his father's words.
He flew, soaring higher, and higher, as close as he could get to the sun. His wings made of wax were melted away by the suns brilliance and Icarus fell to earth.
To his end.
And the Lotus flower, that blooms at the bottom of a lake, steeped in mud, struggles and craves, longing and yearning for the suns brilliance, but they can never touch the sun.
And a bird, born with wings to fly, can only fly so high, but never crossing that line, that boundary.
And sometimes love is just the same.
Not every story can have a happy ending, no matter the toil, the strife, the pain.
And some times, no my matter how much you love someone, you may forever be enemies, on opposing sides, love hidden deep in your heart, and all you can do, is to stare wistfully at the horizon, yearning until the end.

1. why did you choose your url?
This nick and my icon is all the way from Farscape forums back in early 00s. I picked it because I enjoyed the Dangermouse cartoons.
2. any sideblogs? if you have them name them and why you have them.
I made dangermousie2 in the event the main one gets banned or there is some other issue, but I don't use it. I am old enough that I started when people didn't have theme/sideblogs and that's how I roll.
3. how long have you been on tumblr?
2011? 2012? I am a LiveJournal refugee who first got an account when LJ started being unreliable but only switched in a meaningful way when I got into Spartacus and all the fun fandom was here.
4. do you have a queue tag?
Nope. Impulse control and planning, what's that?
5. why did you start your blog in the first place?
I first got LJ back in 2005 (I think) because a cousin got me into it; I was posting about things like books and Bollywood and Star Wars then. And then here I am all these years later.
6. why did you choose your icon/pfp?
Fits my user name. A very kind person made it for me back on long defunct Farscape boards back in 2003/2004.
7. why did you choose your header?
I don't have anything there, it's whatever tumblr gave me.
8. what’s your post with the most notes?
I have NO idea how to find it out tbh. But it might be:
9. how many mutuals do you have?
No idea how to check.
10. how many followers do you have?
6581
11. how many people do you follow?
2565
12. have you ever made a shitpost?
Nope
13. how often do you use tumblr each day?
Way way way too often.
14. did you have a fight/argument with another blog once?
Yes. I am a lot less likely to do so now but when I was younger and more impulsive, oh yes.
15. how do you feel about ‘you need to reblog this’ posts?
You say that, I will not reblog and will likely block you to boot.
16. do you like tag games?
Sometimes.
17. do you like ask games
Sometimes.
18. which of your mutuals do you think is tumblr famous?
I have no idea. Thankfully we are largely past the era of BNFs and I am glad for that.
19. do you have a crush on a mutual?
I am waaaay too old for that question. No.
20. what is the last song you listened to?
ТІК & Ірина Білик - Не цілуй
21. what are you currently watching?
I have a pinned post about that but a bunch. My faves out of the airing stuff I am watching are Love in the Desert, Black Out and Iron Family.
22. sweet/ savoury/ spicy?
I have no spice tolerance so the other two.
23. what is your current relationship status?
Married. To a man who is OK with listening me describe Wu Chang Jie to him in excruciating detail so def a keeper.
24. what is your current obsession?
Lust in the Dust (iykyk), Cass Morris' Aven Cycle, coffee.
25. what are nine albums/ songs you've been listening to lately?
no idea, it changes.
Tagging @aysekira @silviakundera @renewedmotionforjudgment @fake-married-my-dead-fiance and anyone else who wants to

Thunderbolt Fantasy ships, summarized
Lin Xue Ya/Shang Bu Huan - The inherent eroticism of fucking your narrative foil--simultaneously your opposite and complement. More importantly, it's about sexualizing that old man and annoying the hell of out him at the same time.
Lin Xue Ya/Sha Wu Sheng - These two have everything: history, chemistry, betrayal, graveyard drinking dates, and a promised rendezvous in the afterlife. Also, bird themes.
Lang Wu Yao/Shang Bu Huan - If "I would go to the ends of the earth for you AND kill anyone who looks at you funny" makes you feral, this is the ship for you. Bonus: Ling Ya as the sassy wingman.
Lang Wu Yao/Lin Xue Ya - The man who never talks and the man who can't stop talking. Rivals to hatesex to a threesome with Shang, what's not to like?
Lang Wu Yao/Mu Tiang Ming - Is there anything sexier than a duet to the death? I thought not.
Mu Tian Ming/Shang Bu Huan - Lang clearly thinks this is a thing, but IDK?? Make it a threesome and everybody wins.
Shang Bu Huan/Wan Jun Po - The Xi You Hot Dads Squad and old man yaoi at its finest. The inherent tragedy and drama of two morally upstanding people ultimately driven apart by whether the ends justify the means.
Dan Fei/Juan Can Yun - Canon. I'm not the first person to make this joke, but it's true: "She's everything. He's just Ken." Utterly adorable.
Dan Fei/Xing Hai - A cleric dedicated to fighting evil and a demon necromancer whose greatest wish is to crush humanity like a bug. A crackship with surprising potential. Please, tell me more!
Lin Xue Ya/Xing Hai - Technically canon in the light novels, where he tricked her into falling in love with him before humiliating her. No wonder she hates his guts--he's the ex-boyfriend from hell who shows up on her doorstep to ask for a favor.
Xing Hai/Juan Can Yun - This may have actually happened in S3 and neither party is happy about it.
Lou Zhen Jie/Seven Blasphemous Deaths - Another canon ship, this time between a nihilist ex-monk and his evil sword wife. I love that this show asks "Would you really love her if she was a worm a sexy demon lady?" and LZJ's response is "HELL NO". They deserve each other.
Lin Xue Ya/Xiao Kuang Jun - These two fucked at least once in S2, I don't make the rules. How else am I supposed to read Xiao pinning Lin to a bed followed by an immediate cut away, and him leading Lin around the countryside on a leash? There was motive and opportunity, and it's a punishment for both of them for wildly different reasons.
Lang Wu Yao/Xiao Kuang Jun - Remember, Xiao was the one to "discover" Lang and was his first patron at the Xi You court. Make what you will of this.
Lang Wu Yao/Chao Feng - Adding sex to their canon relationship would change almost nothing, but since when has the yandere murder princess ever cared about ethics and boundaries?
Lang Wu Yao/Xing Hai - A crackship for now, but you never know… they were last seen in each other's company.
Xie Ying Luo/Therapy - This woman is not ready for a relationship right now, she needs to find herself and make better life choices. Talking to Di Kong does NOT count!!

C-Novel Reading List
Are you new to the world of Chinese web-novels and don’t know where to start?
Maybe you’ve read a few and don’t know what to read next?
Do you wish there was place that had an interactive collection of c-novels that you can filter by genre and translation status, has information about the novels and links of where to read them?
May I present.... Shen-Daozhang’s C-Novel Reading List
I’m a librarian irl, and I love making lists of media. I also love Chinese web novels, and friends often ask me for recommendations, or for help finding where to read a novel. I also wanted a place for myself where I could remember what I thought about novels that I’d read. But I wanted it to be more than just a long text post list with links. I wanted it to be pretty! And I wanted it to be filterable by genre and translation status, and some other factors too.
So, to that end, I decided to make a interactive libguide list here on tumblr. I then decided that instead of just keeping it to myself and my friends after putting in all that work, it might be a resource that’s helpful to other people! Hence this post!
In addition to the list being filterable by genre, translation status, and whether it’s a good first read or one of my personal favorites, in each novel's description you can easily see how many chapters it is, its genre, if there are any adaptations, a quick summary- and, if I've read it, my thoughts. I have also included a link of where to read it, as well as links to my own tumblr posts and reblogs about the book, because if you're like me you're influenced to pick up a novel by seeing what it seems like through tumblr posts.
This is a perpetual WIP, so if you find any broken links, or think there’s a novel I should include, please let me know!
As of right now, the list includes (in no particular order) :
Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong - Scum Villain's Self-Saving System Mo Dao Zushi - Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation Tian Guan Ci Fu - Heaven Official’s Blessing Erha He De Bai Mao Shizun - Husky and His White Cat Shizun Yuwu - Remnants of Filth Bing An Ben - Casefile Compendium Qian Qiu - Thousand Autumns Wushuang - Peerless Chenghua Shisi Nian - Fourteenth Year of the Chenghua Emperor / Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty Qi Ye - Lord Seventh Tian Ya Ke - Faraway Wanderers Sha Po Lang Lie Huo Jiao Chuo - Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire Can Ci Pin - The Defectives / Imperfections Liu Yao - The Revitalization of Fu Yao Sect Zhenhuan - Guardian You Fei - Bandits / Legend of Fei Mo Du - Silent Reading Tai Sui Guomen - Through the Strait Gate Wu Wuran, Wu Gonghai - No Pollution, No Public Harm Tong Qian Kan Shi - Copper Coins Hei Yueguang Na Wen BE Ju Ben - Black Moonlight Holds the BE Script Huo Shou Zui - Living to Suffer Zhang Xiang Shou - Til Death Do Us Part Luan Shi Wei Wang - To Rule in a Turbulent World Dinghai Fusheng Lu - Epic of Divinity Light Tianbao Fuyao Lu - Legend of Exorcism Xiao Mogu - Little Mushroom Xiang Mi Chenchen Jin Ru Shuang - Heavy Sweetness, Ash Like Frost / Ashes of Love Lang Ya Bang - Nirvana in Fire Huang Jin Tai - Golden Stage / Golden Terrance Jiang Ye - Eternal Night / Nightfall / Ever Night Wuchang Jie - Impermanence Calamity Nan Chan Qing Yu Nian - Celebrating the Remaining Years / Joy of Life Fu Yao Huanghuo - Empress Fuyao / Legend of Fuyao Huang Quan - Rise of Phoenixes Jing Wei Qing Shang - Clear and Muddy Loss of Love Nujiangjun He Zhang Gongzhu - Female General and Eldest Princess Bin bian bushi haitang hong - Winter Begonia Duzhu You Bing - The Governor's Illness/There’s Something Wrong With the Governor

#cnovels#mxtx#priest#meatbun#reading list#2ha#mdzs#tgcf#please reblog so others can find this! :)#and I made this my pinned post so ppl don't have to keep reblogging my personal pinned post to find the link#c-novel reading list#<-- this is the tag I use to talk about this list and track changes (mostly saying this for myself lol)#pinned#lena reads

On what a concubine's child would call his biological mother, were the rules different for the imperial family, like with everything else? Because I was watching Nirvana in Fire and I could swear I heard the Crown Prince call Consort Yu "Mufei"
Hi Anon, another anon asked a similar question (below), so I’m going to answer the two of your together!
How does kinship work in the royal family? That is, a prince referring to his father the emperor, his paternal and maternal uncles and aunts, his mother empress and referring to other concubines. Or in the case in which the prince was born of a concubine, the same. I love your blog! ^^
Some Pre-amble:
So, yes, the royal family does the whole ‘address’ thing a little differently.
To answer the first anon’s question, the term he heard was 母妃 “mufei”, which is what an royal prince or princess calls their mother, when their mother is a concubine. However, I believe the mother still has to be at least at the rank of “consort”, because ‘fei = consort.
So from highest to lowest, members of the harem are:
Empress (皇后) - huang’hou
Imperial Noble Consort (皇贵妃) - huang’guifei
Noble Consort (贵妃) - guifei
Consort 妃 - fei
Concubine (嫔) - pin
贵人 - gui’ren
常在 - chang’zai
答应 - da’ying
管女子 - guan’nvzi.
I believe this is actually the ranking system in the last dynasty (the Qing dynasty), and different dynasties have slightly different ranking, especially for the lower ranking ones. For the Ming dynasty (aka the dynasty before Qing), I believe they are these ones: 皇后、皇贵妃、贵妃、妃、昭仪 (chao yi)、婕妤 (jie yu)、美人(mei ren)、才人 (zairen)、贵人 (gui ren),选侍 (xuan shi)、淑女 (shu nv). But the ones I’ve listed above for the Qing dynasty are the ones most Chinese people are familiar with.
Note that every member of the harem also uses either a given monosyllable ‘special name’ before their rank or their own last name. Only the ones favoured by the Emperor or has high enough status are given a “special name”. Once that special name is given, their last name is dropped from their title. In Nirvana in Fire, the Crown Prince’s mother at the start of the show is a Noble Consort. Her complete title Yue’guifei 越贵妃:
“越” - “贵妃” “special name/last name” - “rank” “Yue” - “Guifei”
In 甄嬛传, Noble Consort Hua’s last name is Nian. Hua is her ‘special name’. When she was at the height of her power, she was Hua’guifei, but when she was demoted to a da’ying, she was reduced to Nian-da’ying. At that point, her ‘special name’ was rescinded and she reverted to using her last name in her title.
Okay so now that preamble is out of the way, here we go. Note, the below address are NON-QING DYNASTY. Qing Dynasty is like... different, because they’re Manchurians.
Father
父皇 fu’huang - fu = father, huang = imperial/emperor
Mothers:
What the Empress’s children should call the Empress:
母后 mu’hou - this is imperial equivalent of the formal Mother and is only reserved for the Empress. “Hou” = Empress/Queen. The empress is technically mother of all the children in the harem.
What all royal children should call the Empress:
母后 mu’hou
皇后娘娘 huang’hou-niang’niang - this is a respectful way to address the queen. It’s like...Your Majesty the Empress. “Huang’hou” = imperial empress. “Niang’niang” = the address we can use towards higher ranking members of the harem, at least consort or higher.
What children of “imperial noble consort”, “noble consort”, and “consort” should call their own mothers:
母妃 mu’fei
What children of lower ranked harem-members should call their own mothers:
I’m actually... not sure to be honest, because in tv shows, once concubines have children (especially sons) they’re typically promoted...I guess the formal “mother - muqin” would be okay.
What royal children should call members of the harem (except the empress) who are not their own mothers:
A) If the harem member is imperial noble consort, noble consort, or consort:
“special name”/ “last name” - mu’fei -> e.g.: Ling-fei 令妃 (Consort Ling) would be 令母妃 (Ling-mu’fei). This option is only used if the child is close to this particular harem member.
Title-niang’niang -> e.g.: Ling-fei 令妃 (Consort Ling) would be 令母娘娘 Lingfei-niang’niang.
B) If the harem member is lower rank than consort:
Title alone would do.
Grandfathers
If the Emperor has grandchildren, they would refer to their Grandfather (Emperor) as 皇祖父 huang-zufu = imperial grandfather. The maternal grandfather is just the same as everyone else’s 外祖父 wai-zufu.
If the Emperor’s children is referring to their dead grandfather aka the previous emperor, it can be 皇祖父 huang-zufu but it’s typically 先帝 xiandi, which means “previous emperor” LOL.
Grandmothers
If the royal children we’re thinking of are the paternal grandchildren of the current Emperor, they would refer to their respective paternal grandmothers (aka members of the harem) the same as everyone else aka 祖母 zumu = grandmother, but the Empress is technically their 皇祖母 huang’zumu = imperial grandmother.
The empress’s own grandchildren would of course refer to her as 皇祖母 huang’zumu = imperial grandmother.
If the royal children are referring to their grandmother the Dowager Empress, it’s still 皇祖母 huang’zumu = imperial grandmother. Or they can just call her by her title 太后 tai’hou = Dowager Empress.
***note that this is only for princes’ children. Princesses’ children are typically no longer “royal” and so would follow the same rule as everyone else.
Uncles
By uncle I mean your father’s brothers. Your mother’s brother’s don’t get the same treatment because patriarchy. Seriously. Princess’s children don’t have to call their Uncles (the Princes) anything that special. It’s just jiujiu. Lol.
Honestly...even paternal uncles don’t really need special titles. It’s relatively the same as everyone else, but I’ve seen 皇叔 huangshu = imperial uncle being used.
Some times you could have like... 10 paternal uncles because your granddad was the emperor and he had a harem. In that case, princes and princesses really do just say “4th Uncle” or “1st Uncle” aka “da’bo”, “er’bo”, “wu-shu” etc etc etc.
