Every year on July 17th, we celebrate Wrong Way Corrigan Day in honor of Douglas ‘Wrong Way’ Corrigan, an aviator whose daring flight from New York to Ireland, despite plans for a transcontinental journey to California, has become the stuff of legend. This day is a celebration of Corrigan’s adventurous spirit, his boldness in taking unconventional paths, and a reminder that sometimes, the most…

Douglas “Wrong Way” Corrigan crosses the Atlantic
Douglas Corrigan, the last of the early glory-seeking fliers, takes off from Floyd Bennett field in Brooklyn, New York, on a flight that would finally win him a place in aviation history.
Eleven years earlier, American Charles A. Lindbergh had become an international celebrity with his solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic. Corrigan was among the mechanics who had worked on Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis aircraft, but that mere footnote in the history of flight was not enough for the Texas-born aviator. In 1938, he bought a 1929 Curtiss Robin aircraft off a trash heap, rebuilt it, and modified it for long-distance flight. In July 1938, Corrigan piloted the single-engine plane nonstop from California to New York. Although the transcontinental flight was far from unprecedented, Corrigan received national attention simply because the press was amazed that his rattletrap aircraft had survived the journey.
Almost immediately after arriving in New York, he filed plans for a transatlantic flight, but aviation authorities deemed it a suicide flight, and he was promptly denied. Instead, they would allow Corrigan to fly back to the West Coast, and on July 17 he took off from Floyd Bennett field, ostentatiously pointed west. However, a few minutes later, he made a 180-degree turn and vanished into a cloudbank to the puzzlement of a few onlookers.
Twenty-eight hours later, Corrigan landed his plane in Dublin, Ireland, stepped out of his plane, and exclaimed, “Just got in from New York. Where am I?” He claimed that he lost his direction in the clouds and that his compass had malfunctioned. The authorities didn’t buy the story and suspended his license, but Corrigan stuck to it to the amusement of the public on both sides of the Atlantic. By the time “Wrong Way” Corrigan and his crated plane returned to New York by ship, his license suspension had been lifted, he was a national celebrity, and a mob of autograph seekers met him on the gangway.

Taking my "Edwin attended history classes at St Hilarions in the days between Hell and Charles" headcanon a step further:
Some boy in the class had a near-death experience in the past and could see him. Edwin's sitting in the corner, scrawling in his notebook, making bitchy little comments about "humanity's unchanging propensity to make itself a laughingstock" and "the audacity of those damnable whigs."
One time, the professor is like, "pioneer aviator Corrigan flies the wrong way in 1938 and ends up in Ireland rather than California," and Edwin mumbles, "bang-on, then, I suppose he was off in search of the potatoes to replace the mush within his brain." Also, "there was a World War TWO? Surely you lot could learn from the experience THE FIRST TIME!?!?"
The kid is like. Wow. Does anyone else see the snarky guy in the corner? He has high socks and knickerbockers and jumps 3 feet whenever the teacher drops something??? How is no one sharing this fundamental classroom experience with me?
He tells his very concerned BFF, who's like... Steve.... is the cunty old-timey kid in the room with us right now...

A list of details and bits in Peter Pan goes wrong that I really like
Trevor and Annie interaction in the intro (it's literally like three seconds but their friendship means so much to me so I don't care)
Trevor trying to light a cigarette over a bucket that says "Gunpowder, DANGER EXPLOSIVES"
Trevor saying that Dennis's headset won't be noticeable, and then Dennis entering the stage with a giant headset
Dennis reading out all of his lines with no emotion whatsoever
"Liza, the Darling's housekeeper. Different in every way from Mrs. Darling" Enter Annie who plays both Liza and Mrs. Darling
Everyone completely ignoring Robert desperately reaching for his dog ears
Annie having to sing louder and louder as the background noise gets louder and louder (That bit will never not be funny to me)
Trevor giving both the other stage hands (played by Bryony Corrigan and Niall Ransome) a comforting pat on the shoulder after they help cut Robert out of the door
Nancy Zamit's singing voice
Annie accidentally pulling Trevor unto the stage when she jumps in her Tinkerbell dress (They're besties your honour)
Trevor's scream after the blanket lights on fire (Can you tell who my favourite character is??)
The way Sandra looks at Max during the entire play (I love them)
Sandra checking if Lucy is okay
The fact that Dennis actually can remember lines, just not his own
When Trevor is holding up the cards for Dennis all of them are written in a way that makes Dennis insult the show or his cast members, but you can see that the cards clearly have enough space on them to avoid that sort of thing. Which implies that either Trevor is actively trying to insult the show or he is just a himbo.
Dennis wears inflatable armbands when swimming
Just how happy Robert and Chris sound whilst gossiping about their cast members
Robert checking Trevor's pulse because they're all scared that he just straight up died
"Not you Dennis walk away", followed by Dennis holding up his hands as if he's being arrested
Chris insisting on pulling of the cork of the flask with his hook rather than just placing the bottle on the table and pulling it off with his other hand
Everyone's horrified screams when Annie wakes up
Vanessa/Bryony looking incredibly happy after Annie wakes up
The sea shanty. Just that. I love it. It's a great song
When the stage won't stop revolving and we see the stage crew, all of them turn to Trevor because he's the only one of them who's had to deal with everything going completely wrong
Bryony and Niall's characters trying to tape down the stage
Trevor leaping of the stage the moment he hears Chris yell his name
Sandra and Annie actually getting along and not fighting over Annie's kiss with Jonathan. Annie repeatedly apologises but Sandra says that it's not Annie's fault and that it's okay (And the fact that this was a detail added by Charlie and Nancy)
Trevor saving the day
Trevor and the BBC guy still arguing whilst there is an actual fire
Trevor yelling "Happy Christmas mate!" as he sprays the BBC guy with the fire extinguisher
I also really like the fact that we see Trevor and the BBC guy arguing and then the next thing we see of them is them hugging and screaming over the fire
The BBC news guy saying that the BBC has cancelled their Community Choice Project (a.k.a the only reason the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society were even on BBC) as the boat goes by in the background
When Sandra and Max kiss the camera deliberately move so that you can see Trevor and the BBC guy in the background with their arms around each other, and Trevor looks at the BBC guy in such a loving (and gay) way and then he realises that there are cameras and immediately pulls away
Trevor helping the BBC guy down from the bunk bed and then looking after him as he runs of stage (Your honour they're gay)
When the credits roll a bunch of names start falling off and apart, except for the Lightning designer's whose name flickers instead

Movie Review | Superbad (Mottola, 2007)
Tumblr media
This actually came out when I was in high school and was a pretty big hit, so the ideal time to have watched this would probably have been then. But in part because I wasn't going to the movies regularly at the time, in part because I didn't (and still probably don't) have much affection for the overarching comedic sensibilities of the era, and in part because this is one of those movies that some of the more annoying people I knew adopted as their personality, I didn't get around to it. But as I've seen two of Greg Mottola's movies over the past few days, I figured now would be as good a time as any to close this blind spot. It was unlikely I would ever again be in the same Mottola Movie Mood.
Now, this will be a shock to nobody except me, but given that I'm so so at best on a lot of beloved comedies from the era, I actually enjoyed this. Speaking from experience, this movie fundamentally understands the angst of being a loser in high school. It understands that losers don't want to be losers but are maybe a little more attached to their identities than they realize. It understands that there are different tiers of losers, and the losers in the higher tiers, perhaps due to their insecurities, will look down on the losers in the lower tiers, but are still closer to each other than with the rest of the population. And it understands that when you've internalized being a loser for a certain amount of time, it can be hard to read signals from those outside your social strata. The particulars of my exact experience are different (quite frankly, these guys are smoother than I was; McLovin at least told the girl what time it was, I would have just avoided eye contact and walked away without saying anything), but the overall sentiment rings true.
And most refreshingly, the movie is surprisingly gentle. The friendship between the heroes is well realized and acted with a certain amount of texture. The movie does not hold its female characters in contempt, and actually fleshes them out as individuals to the extent possible when filtered through the heroes' perspectives. There's a buildup near the end when one of the heroes prepares to hook up with the girl he desires that leads you to expect a cruel pull of the rug, but to the movie's credit, it does not play things that way. The results are raunchy but not mean-spirited. And most surprisingly, for a movie that came out before #MeToo, it's surprisingly sensitive around matters of consent.
You can compare this to something like Revenge of the Nerds, which is probably the '80s equivalent of something like this. Both movies have arguably lovable nerds, but the earlier movie frames the proceedings through a snobs vs slobs conflict and paints clear enemies, while this presents a story of introspection and self growth without many overt villains. And more importantly, the earlier movie is more cavalier about violating consent and has you root for its heroes as they commit straight up sex crimes. This one realizes that sex crimes are bad. That said, I must confess I enjoy the earlier movie more, in part because of the better rounded cast, in part because of the musical number, and in part because I prefer '80s boner comedy sheen to 2000s boner comedy sheen. So I'm afraid I'm on the wrong side of history with this one.
Anyway, I remember people had McLovin fever when this came out, and even I admitted that the bits in the trailer were pretty funny. But seeing the movie now, the extent to which he's transparently pushed as a breakout character felt a little clumsy. And while Mottola in general likes to structure his movies around detours from what I've been seeing, I think the scenes with McLovin and the cops grind the movie to a halt. The rest of the movie has moments of exaggeration (one of the heroes getting into a fight with Kevin Corrigan thanks to an incriminating menstrual bloodstain on their pants), but these scenes totally break the reality of the movie and feel like something out an SNL sketch. They are not free of laughs, but feel much too broad for the overall tone of the movie.

day one = depression;
Corrupting
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
b.p.r.d. // abe sapien×ofc // unresolved angst // first person pov // amoral oc // ao3
Grief. What an alien word. So often associated with loss, and loss I know, but whatever this is I don’t. I’m more prone to anger and avoidance, but there’s nothing left in me at this, at Sapien’s…  Abraham’s motionless body suspended in a test tube of sorts. It's like those directories have been overwritten, leaving me to crash. And crash I do. Anger would be easy, at Devon and Manning and Corrigan and the whole bureau, since I’ve never cared about precision in my wrath. At Hellboy for leaving and Sherman for disappearing, even at the homunculus for dying off.
Only Johann Kraus joins me in my watch, when he's not away on a mission. You'd think they'd given that up, world going to shit and all. You’d think he’d say more encouraging things, as a ghost psychic, but I don’t have it in me to resent him his uselessness. I think he thinks I appreciate the company, but I’m beyond caring. I join him as he leaves now, figure I could use a shower, only to run into Andrew Devon in the hallway. He was there when Abraham got shot, like as not he did it himself. I’m reminded I’m alive by the loathing that bubbles up my throat.
‘You’re dead, Devon!’ Not my brightest, but I’m bereaved if you’ll allow it.
He mutters some smart reply or other, but I only barely hear it. I’m sliding off Kraus’ preventative hold on my shoulder, even if he doesn't know my suspicions he knows there's no love lost between us with the way he bought into the Black Flame's assertions, and shoving my way past Devon and, were his mates here all along? And the gutter psychic? Unimportant. Everyone’s so irrelevant. I just notice her because she was there too when it happened, they could all be here or in hell like I care.
It’s all the same when I go back in, alone now. I don’t know what I’m doing, but there’s no other place for me here. And next to him, much to Manning’s chagrin, I spend my days. I lay my hands on the glass, step away, reach out with my thoughts trying to make any contact. Trying to find anything to make contact with. I stare. At some points I even trick myself to think I’ve seen his fingers twitch, his eyelids flutter. No use.
Just like I'm no use now. I don't forget the entire planet is under attack, it's more like a secondary thought for me. To hell with the bureau and the country and the entire earth. There's outbreaks, giant bat beasts or whatever it is this week, my father writes from safety. It's only that last one I spare a thought to, but can't bring myself to reply. I've ran into an unhandled exception and I'm, for once in my life, unable to debug.
It’s over, eventually. His vitals crash, and the whitecoats suspect extensive brain damage. Even Kraus says his soul is fighting to leave. Well and good, so should I. I don’t make an attempt to hold my tears back, I let them out freely for I won’t need them where I’m going. And I'm going; I feel the code of my life corrupting, line by line. I wasn’t able to save Abraham from his own bleeding heart, but I’ll still make sure those who pushed him to this pay.
I’m in every computer here, should have thought of that before they made me head of R&D, I know of the correspondence between the higher ups and the Zinco frauds. As fate would have it, I’m also in their system, thanks to a polymorphic I piggybacked through Manning’s emails. They’re, as only I understand it, the enemy. Now I’ll be the enemy too. Sapien thought honesty would win this, get the bureau to actually work with the special agents instead of working them. He’d be horrified if he knew I’m to defect for the frog terrorists, but that’s just a distant consideration to me. He was wrong and now he’s as good as dead. He’s as good as dead, and now I’m going to make them sorry.

I think alot of people look at the notes of your posts and equate it to follower count.
not taking into consideration that not every person who interacts with your work is a follower or consistently is exposed to your work.
Love your advice, it's honestly the best to give.
Don't do it because you want fame, the people who interact are just bonuses.
My follower count is something I've never felt comfortable sharing. To quote Mark Corrigan from Peep Show: "don't flaunt your wad, Jeremy, it's unbecoming."
Don't get me wrong, I am incredibly grateful for every person that goes out of their way to follow me and interact with me, and I've always strived to make my blog a welcoming space for people, but the day I stop writing will be the day my enjoyment of it begins to fade, not when the notes and followers begin to dip.
Chasing engagement is the quickest way to suck the fun out of writing, as you will drive yourself crazy seeking validation. I choose to focus on improving my craft and making sure I become a better writer with each piece that I finish. Anything else is arbitrary.

Friday Releases for August 9
Friday is the busiest day of the week for new releases, so we've decided to collect them all in one place. Friday Releases for August 9 include Cuckoo, The Instigators, The Crush House, and more.
Cuckoo
Cuckoo, the new movie from Tilman Singer, is out today.
Reluctantly, 17-year-old Gretchen leaves her American home to live with her father, who has just moved into a resort in the German Alps with his new family. Arriving at their future residence, they are greeted by Mr. König, her father’s boss, who takes an inexplicable interest in Gretchen’s mute half-sister Alma. Something doesn’t seem right in this tranquil vacation paradise. Gretchen is plagued by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret that also concerns her own family.
The Instigators
The Instigators, the new movie from Doug Liman, is out today.
Rory (Matt Damon) and Cobby (Casey Affleck) are reluctant partners: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to rob a corrupt politician’s ill-gained earnings. But when the heist goes wrong, the two find themselves engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos, pursued not only by police but also by backward bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses. Completely out of their depth, they convince Rory’s therapist (Hong Chau) to join their riotous getaway through the city, where they must put aside their differences and work together to evade capture — or worse.
Dance First
Dance First, the new movie from James Marsh, is out today.
Literary genius Samuel Beckett lived a life of many parts: Parisian bon vivant, WWII Resistance fighter, Nobel Prize-winning playwright, philandering husband, recluse. But despite all the adulation that came his way, he was a man acutely aware of his own failings. Titled after Beckett’s famous ethos Dance first, think later, the film is a sweeping account of the life of this 20th-century icon.
It Ends With Us
It Ends With Us, the new movie from Justin Baldoni, is out today.
IT ENDS WITH US, the first Colleen Hoover novel adapted for the big screen, tells the compelling story of Lily Bloom (Blake Lively), a woman who overcomes a traumatic childhood to embark on a new life in Boston and chase a lifelong dream of opening her own business. A chance meeting with charming neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni) sparks an intense connection, but as the two fall deeply in love, Lily begins to see sides of Ryle that remind her of her parents’ relationship. When Lily’s first love, Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar), suddenly reenters her life, her relationship with Ryle is upended, and Lily realizes she must learn to rely on her own strength to make an impossible choice for her future.
Running On Empty
Running On Empty, the new movie from Daniel André, is out today.
Mortimer is an odd but clever young man living a lukewarm existence in California’s San Fernando Valley until he receives some life-changing news. Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In
Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, the new movie from Soi Cheang, is out today.
Many years after the bloody turf war that ushered in an uneasy era of peace in Hong Kong’s underworld, the notorious Kowloon Walled City serves as a fortified, lawless safe haven for gangs and refugees alike. But when a skilled underground fighter runs afoul of the most feared Triad boss in Hong Kong, a bounty is placed on his head despite his connections to the leader of the infamous enclave. As his pursuers violate the tenuous territorial truce to exact their vengeance, the fallout reignites old grudges, bringing decades of building tension to a brutal, bloody boiling point.
Borderlands
Borderlands, the new movie from Eli Roth, is out today.
Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home, Pandora, the most chaotic planet in the galaxy. Her mission is to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Ramírez), the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. Together, these unlikely heroes must battle an alien species and dangerous bandits to uncover one of Pandora’s most explosive secrets. "Kelly Corrigan Wonders" Podcast: Listen To Her Rupture & Repair Mini-Series
Tumblr media
Life is easy when we all agree. And consciously or not, we tend to surround ourselves with people who have a similar worldview. The exception is family, so when Mom and Dad become 24/7 Fox News watchers, we try to get along for the sake of family cohesion, despite the crazy shit they now say.
For a lot of us, we adopt a "let's keep silent" approach to meeting others, in which there is agreement not to bring up any topics that can cause conflict.
The problem with that strategy is you often don't know the triggers of others. For example, I ordered a Bud Light one evening because it was on tap and had two people in our party threaten to leave. The other day, I mentioned Taylor Swift's historic win at the Grammys and was informed that the singer and the NFL conspired to fix the Super Bowl for the Kansas City Chiefs.
That's why I think author / host /podcaster Kelly Corrigan ofKelly Corrigan Wonders has a much better idea.
How can we discuss–productively–the most contentious issues between us? That’s the question beneath Kelly Corrigan WondersRupture and Repair series, five conversations about navigating dicey topics. The series is a deep dive into the hardest conversations between people, partners, families and groups.
“Through five unforgettable success stories, it gives our country the informed hope it’s hungry for and a set of principles and practices to follow,” Corrigan says. Avoiding topics where opposite perspectives are held might seem easier, but Kelly aims to educate and inspire us to engage in meaningful and necessary exchanges to better understand each other. The series looks at rupture and repair from several angles: marriage and family, political and personal, religious and secular. Each episode features Kelly in conversation with a guest who has seen the rupture between people and discovered ways to repair. Guests include Monica Guzman, Manu Meel, Julie Schwartz Gottman and John Gottman, Simon Greer, and April Lawson. By the end, Kelly Corrigan surfaces thoughtful and effective strategies that she puts to the test as she has her own difficult conversation about a woman’s right to choose.
My favorite episodes include the one with marriage experts The Gottmans. In the episode, they discuss the right and wrong ways for couples to fight and how to better resolve their differences. HINT: keeping your mouth shut and burying your resentment doesn't work.
Anyone who is married or in a long-term relationship should listen to this episode. I learned a lot, and so will many listeners.
The episode where Corrigan (who is pro-choice) talks with April Lawson (who is pro-life) is a masterclass in deftly handling difficult conversations. Listen to this Corrigan - Lawson discussion, then go back and listen to the Biden-Trump debates of 2020 and tell me who is better at managing these difficult conversations. HINT: It's not the old geezers. Kelly Corrigan is a four-time New York Times bestselling author and the host of PBS long-form interview show Tell Me More. Kelly Corrigan Wonders is a show for people who like to laugh while they think and find it useful to look closely at ourselves and our weird ways in the hopes that knowing more and feeling more will help us do more and be better. A former newspaper columnist and four time bestselling author, Kelly wonders about loads of stuff: is knowing more always good? Can we trust our gut? How does change actually happen? She loves talking with nice people who have a sense of humor and know things worth knowing. Each episode ends with Corrigan’s shortlist of takeaways, appropriate for refrigerator doors, bulletin boards and notes to your children.
Kelly Corrigan Wonders is played weekly on KQED, WHYY and 14 other NPR stations across the country. The podcast, distributed by PRX, has been downloaded over 14 million times and has close to 3,000 5-star reviews across platforms. It is available on all major podcast platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Amazon Music. Listeners can subscribe to Kelly's newsletter and follow her on Instagram for more updates.
Let me finish by offering an example of how good Kelly Corrigan is, and it's not even on her own podcast.
In the December 14, 2023, episode of Sound Judgment, host Elaine Appleton Grant interviewed Corrigan about the skills needed to be a superb podcast host and interviewer.
In the episode, Grant and Corrigan share stories of their battle with cancer, stimulating our empathy muscle.
"I'm trying to make your listening worth it. We are asking for your attention, which is an exquisite currency, with so much coming at you," Corrigan observes.
Corrigan notes that "People have their go-to sound bites during interviews." She adds that people who are interviewed often develop an expertise about the event.
In an interview, Corrigan seeks out something not said before from the interview subject.  Corrigan wants the best from an interview subject. She explains how she goes beyond the mutually agreed-upon script to search for personal revelations.
Then, Corrigan introduces the concept of intellectual humility, replacing conviction with curiosity because we don't know what we don't know.
"Personal information in an interview lands for listeners," Corrigan. "It lands in the context of their life."
Corrigan recommends listening to a potential guest to get a sense of their cadence and rhythm before you interview them.Check out Kelly Corrigan Wonders and her five-part Rupture and Repair series. Sit down, have a cup of coffee or tea, and be prepared to get shoved out of your comfort zone and love every minute of it.

Today in Strangeness:
On this day in 1955, Disneyland opened its doors in Anaheim, CA. By all accounts it was a disaster, women's heels sunk into the asphalt, rides broke down, and there was a gas leak. On July 17, 1933, pilot Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan took off on a flight from New York to California, but ended up flying overseas to Ireland, due to what he claimed was a navigational error.
Species Extinction / Astrology & Healing:
Scientist, author, lecturer, and species explorer, Quentin Wheeler, has named more than 100 species new to science, and published more than 175 scientific papers. On Monday's show, he'll reveal why he believes we have entered the first mass extinction event since the disappearance of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Followed by author, social worker, and astrologer Carmen Turner-Schott, who began her astrological work at 16 after an experience with a glowing ball of light, which led her to study metaphysics and the Edgar Cayce material. She'll discuss consciousness, energy, and how astrology can be a tool to heal and create changes.

Compass Day
Compass Day, also known as Wrong Way Corrigan Day because on this date in 1938, an aviator called Douglas Corrigan took off from New York, telling authorities he was going to Los Angeles, but 28 hours later, landed in Ireland. He claimed he was following the wrong end of the compass needle.
10 things you might not know about compasses:
