I’m so tired. I know you all are too. Besides what is happening in the world, it feels like sometimes I can’t tune out the noise. . Besides the world being on fire, as a writer I often find myself, and others, lamenting about how we can’t turn off our writer brains. Whether we are plotting our next book, or feeling down because someone is writing faster than we are, selling more, getting bigger deals, it’s all in there sloshing around in our very fatigued brain. . So here’s what I want you to do: give yourself a freaking break. Some days you don’t need to write. Some days you just need to read, knit, bake, exercise. Whatever you need to do to take care of your own mental state. . The reality is that things will happen for you in their own good time. That book will get written. Whatever your friends are selling, you can get there one day hopefully too. . The truth is, and this was a hard lesson for me to learn, is that you’re not good to anyone if you have nothing left to give. . Think about it. Give yourself, time, space, love, joy. Kate Cavanaugh applies J. K. Rowling’s writing process to her own book, with some interesting results! While she doesn’t favour writing by hand, I cannot help but notice that she uses a bullet journal while writing a novel on the computer. This helps her with making notes and jotting down ideas. Cavanaugh also found Rowling’s table plotting method incredibly useful, as has another writer. Rowling has an insightful quote on the importance of sitting down to plan a story in depth before writing, even if some people just prefer to begin (they usually have a good idea of where they will go, either instinctively, or in notes). An enjoyable video!

Everyone starts with a sh*tty first draft. Whether you’re writing a bio, essay, or book. The Sh*tty First Draft was coined by the writer Anne Lamott & refers to our first go at writing. It’s the drafts which still needs work. It’s full of plot holes, two-dimensional characters, vague sentences, clichéd platitudes, sophomoric language. During the Sh*tty First Draft: You’ll write stuff you’ll cringe at. You’ll write stuff that makes you question whether you should keep going. You’ll write stuff that lets you know that you’re not the untouchable genius you believed you were in your head. And this is normal. The sh*tty first (or second or twelfth) draft is required. You know how people say there’s no dress rehearsal for life? Or “no mud, no lotus”? Yeah, it’s like that. There’s no preparation for writing, beyond writing. & Sometimes you have to write absolute sh*t to get to your gold. There’s always room to revise and edit afterwards.
