It’s funny, last week when the WGA strike was announced I mentioned that I listened to the new ep of the Writers Panel podcast which had a good intro about the strike followed by a pre-recorded interview with Tony Gillroy. Now we know that Andor is one of the only shows that’s scabbing right now. Go figure. Anyway, this week’s episode is with John Rogers, the guy doing all the helpful WGA tweet threads and also the Leverage showrunner. I do recommend it. Anyway, I feel this:

Re-reading the early issues with Bernard and this scene was just so gay. Like they consistently try to make him be straight but it always just comes off like a queer kid desperately trying to stay in the closet

During yesterday SAG-AFTRA press conference a journalist asked:

“What do you say to the fans and consumers that aren’t interested in the strike and just want to see their favourite tv show?” (or something along these lines I don’t recall the precise words)

And Fran Drescher responded with:

“Well, what makes you think they are not interested in what’s happening here? I think that they have an allegiance to all of us because we bring joy and entertainment to their lives […] so I don’t think that your assumption that they don’t really care about anything but being entertained over the summer is the bottom line” and proceded to say how this corporate greed can extend to all fields of works and how we understand that

AND WE DO UNDERSTAND AND WE DO CARE!

I love her so much for this! It makes me sooo mad when the assumption is that, as a consumer, I don’t care about people who make something that I love, because I do, we do! I know for a fact that people in fandoms care so much about the people involved in the creation of every aspect of their favourite piece of media.

Stop infantilising the audience! We are not whiny children and we understand the complexities of this moment. I am sooo happy that she recognised that.

Lessons from moderating panels

When you moderate a panel discussion, you learn as much as the audience. Here are a few lessons from the panels I moderated at @loscon.

Simple observation I made from reading these comics. DC, stop making their dad an asshole and make him hug them more.

Also, the hugs in these comics:

Tim's hug is not in Red Robin but it's during the run and when Bruce comes back in time.

Cass' hug is weird because they're suicidal freaks who think fighting is therapy. They fought while being drugged, and blew up a brigde. It makes sense for them only.

Jason's first hug (Outlaws) is after he tries to apologize for his crimes and Bruce refuses to let him to do it, because his boy is innocent for him 🥺 (and then, they fucked it up with Ethiopia because they cannot let them have nice things 🙄). The second one (Red Hood & Arsenal) is started by Jason, who is just very happy to see that Bruce is alive, even if he has lost his memory.

Just thinking about how others reacted to Jason's death...all of the victim blaming, making him a warning, an example of what not to do, telling him he came back wrong, that he was mean and cruel and dangerous even before his death...constantly making fun of his death and making crowbar jokes and all of that...and how, in the newer runs, Jason seems to just. accept it all.

(Thinking of a scenario where Jason and Roy become friends, how Jason starts to very slowly handle his feelings around his death. How the Jason Roy knows is confident, despite everything, and even if he is angry and hurt and takes that anger and hurt out on the world around him, he still so very firmly believes in making a difference. How after some time Jason decides to try and mend things with his family.

And how slowly but surely, the Jason who Roy knew at the beginning starts to disappear.

How Jason starts to disappear.

How Jason starts believing that he should disappear.

How Jason starts to want to disappear.

And Roy starts to get angry.)

P.S. I'm putting it off 'cause I plan to draw an actual background for once. Complete with twilight lighting. Which is gonna be horrible because a) I've never done it before b) I stand with Mai on the subject: orange is such an awful colour!

This is also what is germinating in my head about Zuko and Mai getting lost in the Spirit World and neither of them respect the spirits enough to get out of there quickly.
