tired of early 20-somethings acting like harry potter was never good or had no value in its day like shut the fuck up half of you weren't even there when it peaked
#sit with the cognitive dissonance like the rest of us or shut up honestly#was it a product of its time yes#was it's author a very basic neoliberal white lady from a country with a long and unchecked imperialist history yes#was the story influenced by said neoliberal worldviews and unexamined biases obviously#does any of that make it a bad story or an unimaginative world no#you can pick apart any fantasy world if you try hard enough#harry potter was a good telling of the hero's journey written in the format of seven mystery novels set against a fantasy backdrop#we can certainly talk about its flaws or how the author's biases leaked onto the page#but stop acting like it was never good and there was never a reason those books resonated with people#it's condescending for one thing and again- if you're younger than like...24-25 you didn't actually experience the heyday of the books#if you're 25 now you'd have been like 8 or 9 when the last book came out and probably weren't reading them yet#you might remember the latter half of the movie era but you have no idea how much it was the BOOKS that drove its popularity#never before and never since has any book series had the fanfare that harry potter did and that didn't happen for no reason#so find a way to make peace with that instead of acting intellectually superior because you grew up with percy jackson instead#this 'well MY generation's preferred childhood book series is morally superior to YOURS so I'm better than you' shit drives me up a wall#like get over yourself honestly#...sorry had to get that off my chest there was this youtube video and it was irritating me

ok the thing about the implication that everything is interconnected (the elven gods are connected to the tevinter old gods/archdemons and also are possibly what humans interpreted as the maker and also they were underground so it’s probably going to be some BiG rEvEaL that they’re behind the dwarves’ connection to lyrium/the stone) is that it just makes the world feel incredibly small. all these different cultures have different mythologies, except it turns out it’s the same. that sucks imo

Oooohhh the urge to yap about my ocs and the world they live in......
#is this the product of growing up lonely with one best friend for 11 years of your life so when she wasnt in school you mae up imaginary#friends and it started off as one but then steadily increased and now your 14 with an entire kingdom with a high population of around 132#and couting because you couldnt stop making ocs based on your interests or hyperfixations or literally anything else to the point where you#could scroll on insta or tt for 5 minutes and think about your little kingdom and think of a character that would fill about 50 plot holes#and this kingdom got so out of hand in your head that you decided to make religons countries languages royal families politics new laws of#physics powers and more because one day you watched avatar the last airbender and decided people could now do water manipulation and#suddenly 50% of characters now possess some sort of magical ability and they all live in a world together that somehow retains peace and#love because the actual name of the planet they live on is peace but just in the language that you made up in your mind. just a little#reminder i started this at 6-7 years old with my gacha life phase going strong which is also how i designed each and every one of my ocs btw#going back this is originally being my imaginary friends I MYSELF AM IMPLEMENTED INTO THIS STORY as it started with my old online persona#that has now become a separate character and now I am a character inside this whole lore so every day i am always thinking about this planet#i made in my head and did i mention ive my favourite genres are action mystery and fantasy??? yeah so thats a main theme#so like theres tons of fighting and betrayal outside of the planet which dives deep into character lores and the whole story line that#this planet follows and i have separated aus of if this wasnt a peaceful planet and if there was some sort of intergalactic war because yes#i am a voltron fan where influential ocs die and thinking or writing that causes me to genuinely tear but because like ive said THESE ARE MY#IMAGINARY FRIENDS they may be imaginary but ive had them for YEARS and theyve been friends with me longer than 99% of my friends so they#mean the world to me so i tend to stray away from the war aus and push that mkre towards my other fics and headcanons thag are heartbreaking#... so anyways!!!#kadens yap session#no but srsly if i were to actually talk to people about this id be shaking in my boots i could not and itd take HOURS#its just a silly world i live in thays all :3

*said with increasing distress, eyes blodshot and an empty mug in hand* you guys remember writing right????? you guys remember posting fic and publishing things and talking to editors about potential projects right???? you guys remember being creative in your creative jobs and not just rereading old work and having a panic attack over the time wasted over curating hyperspecific character playlists that you get mad about five minutes later right????? i'm not insane right????? creative block is normal even if it lasts for months right???? i haven't written a fic in YEARS but it's ok i'm ok i have to finish TWO original pieces for next week that I haven't even started but it'll probably be fineeeee I'm totally not being a complete and raving lunatic about it it's probably gonna be okay <3 yay <3
#AND I STILL HAVEN'T APPLIED FOR MY NEW SHOW IN THEATRES ?1!!!!???? AJAAGAGAHAHAHFGH#BABYGIRL I CAN BE DRY IN WAYS YOU CAN'T EVEN IMAGINE FOR PROJECTS THAT ARE ALREADY EVEN PLANNED OUT#the words just won't come out idk#ok so i attended one of the most prestigious universities in the country re: my field of expertise and carefully improved in my craft#just to go into a creative field and be an unemployed fuckhead who won't even write#i mean I am ALSO an academic that is very much true as well. but you don't really earn money from that either now do you#especially not in humanities#anyway. i need to go wash some dishes#it'll be fine probably i just need to lock tf in#it sucks being the one in the relationship that has no job no money no prospects and is already a burden to their parents#like literally they're being very nasty about it and like i know they care about me and stuff but they are very much. not supportive#it doesn't mean they're openly hating on it tbh i think they've given up on trying to disagree with my life choices and atp they just judge#when i'm not there. but evidently i find out anyway because of course i do#tbh won't complain about the lack of open support though like it's cool you disapprove of my relationship and my work and my life overall#ok rant over i'm big now. i'm an adult#ACTUALLY should i write a paper on disco elysium maybe that'd cheer me up. DON'T ask me how de is cheerful it isn't#my brain just works in mysterious ways#also gonna write an essay on my relationship with god. and get it published. probably gonna quote dostoievski a couple times as well. maybe#who give a fuck anymore man people these days can write ANYTHING. i love being alive in a world where printing is a thing. also computers#personal

I really like giving the nations weird quirks/reactions/powers/physical traits, like how Finland’s back gets itchy when Estonia talks about him in canon. I think its a fun idea, so I wrote this out for a fic awhile ago:
“Anytime a new type of dinosaur was discovered in America his brother’s hair would get so frizzy he looked like a dandelion. Canada was lucky enough to witness the discovery of the T. rex in person, not from the actual site, but from a meeting room in Washington D.C.. The static electricity was strong enough that every the diplomat in the room felt the effects themselves. They looked like a whole field of dandelions at all stages of life. They had agreed to postpone that meeting until a time when America was not a walking, talking tesla coil”

I'm curious if other trigun fans are familiar with geraniums irl? because to me, this is the most basic, the most common house plant. like, everyone I know had geraniums at home at some point. there are tons of different breeds and they all smell a bit metallic if you rub it. also they look closer to wild type in stampede, while geraniums varieties can be really bushy

Someone else on one of my genealogical groups asked for how to access records on the Service du travail obligatoire, France's slave labor program to Nazi Germany. I've been looking for online access to those records for years since I found my great-grandparents in the Arolsen Archive as forced laborers in Munich. I can't help this person because I still haven't found that resource so I'm throwing it out here, anyone know where I and this other person (whom I am presuming is also American) can find records or other resources?

Ok but you know what? American shows rely so heavily on nostalgia, and things working out for the whole cast and then we wonder why shows have unsatisfactory endings or they start trailing off in later years ...
Real friend groups move and change over time. They don't all hang out in a coffee shop or the local restaurant forever. Maybe that's a beautiful nostalgic moment in their lives but maybe it only lasts for a year when that particular group was all together, before someone moves for a job or college or to be with family or to travel.
And sometimes!!!! Friends lose touch over time. Maybe one friend doesn't get along with the group anymore or they do but they grow apart. But the rest of the group goes on. Maybe someone new comes along. The point is sitcoms seem so hell bent on *problem* *solution* *resolution! Yay!* But they don't seem to get that sometimes the cliff hanger of someone moving away just plain and simple happens! And sometimes the childhood love isn't a lifelong romantic thing but maybe they'll always be friends.

Can I ask you a question...?🤭
If you could rename every Taylor album what would you name it and why? P.s you HAVE to change the name even if you think current titles are perfect
self-titled -> a place in this world
fearless -> tell me why
speak now -> the story of us (sparks fly would be good too, i love enchanted but disagree with it as a title because SN is darker than the connotation that gives)
red - i almost do or sad beautiful tragic or the lucky one (for irony) would all be good titles but none of them paint the picture of what the album is like red
1989 -> i know places
reputation -> call it what you want
lover -> daylight
folklore -> this is me trying
evermore -> long story short
midnights -> you're on your own, kid

Travel destination: Australia Part 2
Homecoming by Kate Morton
Adelaide Hills, Christmas Eve, 1959: At the end of a scorching hot day, beside a creek in the grounds of the grand and mysterious mansion, a local delivery man makes a terrible discovery. A police investigation is called and the small town of Tambilla becomes embroiled in one of the most shocking and perplexing murder cases in the history of South Australia.
60 years later, Jess a journalist in search of a story and a phone call out of nowhere summons her back to Sydney, where her grandmother, Nora, who raised Jess when her mother could not, has suffered a fall and been raced to the hospital, at Nora’s house, Jess discovers a true crime book chronicling a long-buried police case: the Turner Family Tragedy of 1959. It is only when Jess skims through its pages that she finds a shocking connection between her own family and this notorious event — a mystery that has never been satisfactorily resolved.
What I Would Do to You by Georgia Harper
A near-future Australia. The death penalty is back. But if the victim's family wants the perpetrator to die, they have to do it themselves. Twenty-four hours alone in a room with the condemned. No cameras. No microphones. Just whatever punishment they decide befits the crime.
As the execution date nears, already-struggling mum, Stella remains adamant that she must carry out the punishment. But it becomes clear that if she steps into that room, the family may lose her too.
No Country for Girls by Emma Styles
Charlie and Nao are strangers from different sides of the tracks. They should never have met, but one devastating incident binds them together forever. A man is dead and now they are unwilling accomplices in his murder there's only one thing to do: hit the road in the victim's twin cab ute, with a bag of stolen gold stashed under the passenger seat. making their way across Australia's remote outback using only their wits to survive. They'll do whatever it takes to evade capture and escape with their lives
Blood River by Tony Cavanaugh
Brisbane 1999. It's hot. Stormy. Dangerous. The waters of the Brisbane River are rising. The rains won't stop. People's nerves are on edge. And then . . .
A body is found. And then another. And another.
A string of seemingly ritualised but gruesome murders. All the victims are men. Affluent. Guys with nice houses, wives and kids at private schools. All have had their throats cut.
Dark Mode by Ashley Kalagian Blunt
For years, Reagan Carsen has kept her life offline. No socials. No internet presence. No photos. Safe. Until the day she stumbles on a shocking murder in a Sydney laneway. The victim looks just like her.
Coincidence?
As more murders shake the city and she’s increasingly drawn out from hiding, Reagan is forced to confront her greatest fear.
She’s been found.

sorry i woke up in my rantsona. but like seriously isn't it fucking twisted that every child in almost every country are basically legal property of their parents. like their parents have complete control over where they can go, who they can talk to, which words out of their mouth are truth or lies; they're allowed, encouraged even, to be the sole interface by which the child connects to everything else in this world. like isnt that extraordinary. like how is it a mystery to anyone that children are constantly dying under parental abuse or growing up into utterly dysfunctional traumatised adults. why are we talking about these nebulous narratives of "the unstoppable and nuanced cycle of abuse" instead of looking straight at the reality we've built specifically for this purpose

I think I got the cool history nerd version, but at an irritatingly specific level.
I can't tell you anything about the Persian language, but I've made a pretty schmick timeline of which calendar systems were used in the Arabian region since pre Zoroaster.
Why did I get the trinkets and homicidal thoughts autism instead of the science and math autism :(
