i started a new job last week and today i had my fifth shift and my manager told me that she was really proud/surprised because i haven’t made a single mistake on the till yet (it’s a super old manual till where we punch in the price of everything by hand) and the till is always the hardest part of training and honestly i think i’ll be riding this high for the next week

People don't actually grow out of their emo phases. People are forced out of their emo phases by employers who get a raging boner over controlling how their employees dress, cut their hair, whether they mod their bodies and so on
#this is society at large not just employers#while the parameters are slightly broader than those of the workplace#there's also a limited range of faces/bodies/etc. deemed acceptable out there#you can be pitied if you're viewed as simply defective#but if your deviation is clearly chosen you're in trouble#well you're only in trouble if you want dependable benefits validation or recognition from mainstream society#ie any kind of reliable social oxygen#people in the notes talking about things like 'corporate goth' as viable alternative workplace looks#you're all insane and/or mouthpieces for the status quo I'm sorry#'just look at all the freedom you have to be weird as long as you do it only in the ways your would-be overlords have specified'#finally: people do of course move beyond their youthful fashion phases#the real import here is the forces herding people into fewer and fewer options#in every arena of life#not least of all because it's harder to market to a highly diversified group#in short#it doesn't matter if there are 90 brands of toothpaste to choose from when there are only 3 acceptable ways to be a person in public#the world is full of fake/trivial choices that hide how few options you have when it comes to choices that actually matter

Hilarious series of events that I never could have seen coming, why do you ask?
• Management tries to push out older employees by hiring fresh out of highschool kids.
• Hiring managers hire a bunch of the exact same kinds of kids: literal frat members who also are deeply supportive of the military and police. Almost all are blond, all are male with little to no prior work experience.
• New hires (again, all frat boys) constantly either no call/no shows, show up multiple hours late with no real excuses, show up hungover, and don't follow SOP.
And this all happened today:
• Coworker #1 (been here over a decade) texts me today to warn me that coworker #2 (one of the new kids) did something today that we've constantly been reminding them not to do and they're reminding everyone not to do it.
• Coworker #2 is brought back to the manager's office so they can explain step by step why we don't do what he did and make sure he understands, all done very nicely and respectfully.
• Coworker #3 comes in and #1 goes through the whole "hey, we're just reminding everyone" spiel without naming names or pointing fingers.
• Coworker #2 (who has since been sitting and fuming in a corner since being spoken to) overhears the quick conversation and tosses them their keys and radio and walks out.
Wow. It's not like I warned them of this when I saw people coming in for the interviews. Who could have known. Golly gosh.
