Some thoughts on OR and language:
- it always seems to me like most German-speaking toddlers first animal word is "Wauwau" for dogs (dogs go "wau wau" in German) and then that gets used for all other animals, to the frustration and/or amusement of parents.
For OR, all animals are "deeta" (Peter, like our cat)
Which is kind of an answer to my question how he categorises Peter - like, does he know that he's a living creature, as opposed to a toy, but an animal, as opposed to a human? And clearly he knows both these things, because neither toys nor people are ever deeta.
(also, if you ask OR what sounds dogs make? They cough!)
- similarly, they do not say banana, that quintessential toddler fruit. No, first food word is "nina" for mandarine.
- words come and go, sometimes we feel like they've forgotten something they used to say all the time, but eventually it pops up again. Like, currently LG and I are both Mama, while Papa is barely used. A few weeks ago, everything was "habe, habe" (have), but now I haven't heard it in a while. Hadn't heard "hei" (hot) for weeks either, but the other day, LG gave them some mandarine slices that had been in the fridge, and OR picked one up and immediately dropped it, saying "hei!" Obviously they're not *hot*, but they noticed they're ar strong/unusual temperature and used the best word they had.
- a few days ago, Peter-cat stayed out late, and OR was helping me call for him at the back door, then sadly said, "deeta na" (Peter no) Should I count that as their first two word sentence?

Americans giving Australians shit for calling a minor traffic accident a "prang" or a "bingle" as though "fender bender" is not the goofiest possible thing to call two cars crashing into each other. Like, at least the Aussie version doesn't rhyme!

Kinda obsessed with headcanon, where Damian and Jason just randomly (out of nowhere, completely unprompted) start to referring to their shared past in the League in the middle of the family conversations, while everyone just stare at them in concern
Like
Jason, staring at Dick, trying to put Tim's shoulder back: huh, do you remember that one time-
Damian, instantly: when grandfather's shoulder relocated by itself, but instead of properly putting in on its place, he killed himself and mother threw him in the Lazarus Pit?
Jason, cackling: it was hilarious
Damian, no less amused: right?
Bruce, sitting behind them: (concerned sips of tea)
Or, it is not necessarily funny, but it just cute (or sad) details, regarding each other that others are confused about.
Jason, who accidentally fell asleep in the Batcave: (instinctively cards through his hair as he naps)
Tim, teasing: ladies and gentlemen, the criminal lord of the year--
Damian: Drake, bluntly, that's not funny. Back when he was out of the Pit, this was the only thing that could help him to calm down.
Dick, knowing that this is because Bruce constantly stroked Robin!Jason's hair, when he saw nightmares, with eyes full of tears: oh
Jason on the random Friday night, trying to be less awkward about staying with Bruce in one room: actually, Damian's first word was my name
Bruce: really?
Jason: he had, uh, problems with saying his first word. People around him were constantly speaking on both language at the same time, and, I guess, he couldn't figure out what to say. Then, Ra's said that if his heir doesn't get his word in the next two weeks, he will throw him in the Lazarus Pit (as a joke), but I wasn't sure if it was a joke (Talia said later it was), and I panicked, and since Talia wasn't around, I just kept repeating him her name, or just word Mother, but he just, uh, wouldn't say anything - kept blinking and staring at me like a little idiot. And then on a random night, he just grabbed me by the hair, and said, Jason. Food. And he kinda spoke properly since then. Like in full sentences and stuff. I think he just didn't want to speak with us, actually--
Bruce, getting grey hair out of nowhere: RA'S SAID WHAT--
And sometimes they just speak in Arabic, and Damian keeps bullying Jason that his skills are getting rustier.

Various language development things:
- classic "talk my ear off waiting for the doctor, then don't say a peep while she is trying to assess language development, then as soon as the door closes behind the doctor, point to the screensaver and shout, 'flowers! trees!" (But also, yeah, if you're going to poke and prod and vaccinate and THEN try to get a toddler to talk, what do you expect?)
- saying "you" for "I/me". Interestingly, there has never been any such confusion about "mine"!
- strictly following grammar rules even where not applicable ("angezieht"/"putted on" instead of "angezogen"/"put on")
- pretending to do an action by repeating the verb (I fondly remember my youngest brother standing in the kitchen, showing his swimming skills by going "swim swim swim") For OR, it's standing bythe bathroom sink saying"gargle gargle gargle"
(hm, thinking of that recent post about frequentative verbs, what does gargle come from? Gag?)
- counting. One, two, four, zero, seven! But also eight nine ten eleven, just completely unconnected from the lower numbers.
- and my favourite, singing! Not whole songs yet, but enough words to recognise the song. Like, "tutut Eisebahn, [name] mitnehmen" is very clearly "Tschu tschu tschu die Eisenbahn ". Which they must have sung at daycare, because we haven't, and OR is always filling in their "best friend's" name. (Not sure they are old enough to actually have friends, but they have been talking a lot about that kid.)
Those songbooks that also play music, and prompt me to sing along, are probably helping with that, too. Going to lose my mind if I have to sing "Die Vogelhochzeit" or "Spannenlanger Hansl, nudeldicke Dirn" much more often, but "Wer hat die Kokosnuss geklaut" is fun. What's also fun is how OR will always flip to the corresponding page and declare "Notonuss defunen!" ("Found the coconut!") Hm, interesting that here they do say "gefunden" and not "gefinded". Anyway, I'm stupidly fond of the pronunciation "Notonuss"
