bkg doesn't like animals. he thinks that you shouldn't get a dog or cat or a turtle or whatever crap you want to ruin the carpet in your home with.
however when you do pick up a stray kitten and adopt it as your own, it seems to follow bkg around. its little feet would pitter patter on the wooden floor, following behind the grumpy blond.
bkg would be annoyed at first.
but like most people who do not like pets, they eventually warm up to them.
at first you find bkg playing with the kitten with a random string, chuckling to himself about how the stupid little thing would be amused by a mere string.
then you would find bkg bathing the kitten in the kitchen sink, commenting that the annoying brat smelled so bad that he finally had to bath him. you even noticed how he seemed to have bought flea shampoo too — the expensive kind.
you spotted him pick out treats for the hyper rug you have at home. bkg was even buying little pet clothes for the kitten, whipping out his black card for the purchase.
bkg also started buying salmon and Evian water for his tiny baby. he would take photos and videos, the kitten finally replaced you as bkg's wallpaper.
you glanced over at him, who was laying on the sofa and unable to move with the kitten sleeping on his chest and realized that bkg didn't like animals, he loved them.

✨ it's that time again!! lets answer some really random questions for fun ✨
thank you @deedala @energievie @mybrainismelted for thinking of lil old me
name: c h a n i
age: I was born when Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" was top of the charts.
astrological sign: A goat.
upon which continent do you reside: Turtle Island.
tell us how you're feeling right now using 3-5 emojis: 🫠💀💅🌧🪠
whats your favorite flavor of gum? Peach Extra. It was discontinued like 15 years ago but I still think it's the best.
whats the last movie you watched? Jane Eyre 2011. I won't go into how often I watch that movie.
what was your worst subject in high school? Math. Lordy lordy, math just would not click for me no matter how hard I tried.
whats the job you stayed at for the shortest period of time? I worked in a call centre for two days. They literally told me when I showed up on day two that they were impressed I'd come back because apparently most new hires don't even last one full day. IT WAS SO AWFUL.
whats your favorite thing to do at an amusement park? I love funnel cake and those huge things of lemonade where they put whole lemons in there. I love most rides except wooden roller coasters. I rode one of the wooden coasters (Mine Buster specifically) at Canada's Wonderland and it rattled my brain so hard I was convinced I was gonna die.
what condiments go on top of the perfect hot dog (meat or plant-based)? I'll take an Oktoberfest sausage with Oktoberfest mustard, diced onions, and sauerkraut. (You can take the girl out of Kitchener but you can't take Kitchener out of the girl.)
cincinnati chili, thoughts? I have no idea what that is. (Hold on while I Google it.) So it's chili on top of pasta with cheese and onions? Sounds good to me? Lol it honestly sounds like something I'd have been served as a kid growing up poor.
do you sleep with a plushie? I don't because until super recently I wouldn't let myself enjoy stuffies? I felt like as an adult I wasn't allowed. But that's stupid. lol
how do you feel about thunderstorms? Looooooooove them. They remind me of the sound of rain on aluminum roofs at camp, counting between thunder and lightning as a kid to know how far away it was, Having the power go out and reading by candlelight, the way everything smells when the rain dies down. I just love them.
what's the last animal you touched? one of my cats when I served them their breakfast! Not sure which one I touched last but I usually give them little good kitty pets as they dig in.
grab the nearest item with words on it that ISNT a book and tell me the final word: "Bitch" hehehehe It's my laptop and the sticker closest to me says "Liking what I like don't make me a bitch"

KDrama Year in Review 2023
While I watched more KDramas this year than CDramas, none of them consumed my heart and soul quite like this year's crop of CDramas did (CDrama review post here). And I dropped KDramas more readily than I have in years past, in part because there were so many more things to watch than I had time for (also I had to finish my dissertation and graduate, etc etc). Still, there were definitely some that I really, really enjoyed, so here's this year's KDrama round up:
16. My Lovely Liar: Started strong, got boring real quick. Dropped for homophobic murder plot. Still, glad to see that Hwang Min Hyn can actually act (although full disclosure, I did still enjoy him in Alchemy of Souls, wooden as that performance may be). Hoping Kim So Hyun can catch a break and get a role in a drama more worthy of her in the near future.
15. Crash Course in Romance: Excellent performances and chemistry by the ML and FL. Romance between two middle aged people instead of youths is also a treat. Dropped around ep 12 because of the unnecessary, homophobic murder plot. Pass.
14. A Good Day to Be a Dog: Surprisingly stronger than the goofy premise suggests, largely on the basis of Park Gyu-Young's performance as the FL who turns into a dog upon being kissed. Pacing problems in the third act around the origins of the whole dog curse thing. Can't say I recommend unless you're really in the mood for some shenanigans, but largely inoffensive if a little silly. (Also it turns out Cha Eun Woo *really* leveled up his kiss game for this one!)
13. Love to Hate You: Perfectly serviceable rom com. Nothing too special, but a nice weekend binge if you're in the mood for that. Also a good way to see Kim Ji-Hoon's v handsome face and that *hair* without having to deal with everything involved with his rather murderous run in Flower of Evil.
12. Joseon Attorney: A Morality: Perfectly serviceable law procedural/Joseon historical. If you don't like either of those genres your mileage may vary, but I had missed having Bona on my screen, so it worked well enough for me.
11. Welcome to Samdal-ri: I seem to like this one more than literally everyone else I know, and I fully admit that my enjoyment of this drama is more vibes-based than plot-based. I guess I have a soft spot for Shin Hye Sun yelling at people at Ji Chang Wook going a bit unhinged over a woman who ran away from him (see also: Lovestruck in the City).
10. My Demon: Very much enjoying Song Kang as a cranky demon falling in love with a human. Very tropey in the best way, and feels like a return to form for the supernatural romance genre. Remains to be seen if they'll land the ending as of this writing, but enjoying as it goes.
9. Doctor Cha: A contribution to the slate of divorce comedies I watched this year (see also: Strangers Again (KDrama) and Let's Get Divorced (JDrama)), a surprisingly touching story about growing older when you've devoted your life to someone who has not done the same for you.
8. Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow (Part 2): While Ko Joon-Yung never quite managed to replace Jung So-Min as the FL for me, I definitely still enjoyed the closer to this fun fantasy series. Special shout out to Shin Seung-Ho as Prince Go Won and his pet turtle
7. Strangers Again: I didn't see a ton about this one on tumblr as it was airing, but I found this rom com? melodrama? divorce procedural? makjang? story about relationships and why they end unexpectedly profound. I tuned in expecting mindless makjang hot mess, and instead got a thoughtful meditation on divorce. Left me feeling unexpectedly melancholy at the end, but glad I watched it.
6. The Secret Romantic Guesthouse: Very fun sageuk! Probably won't knock your socks off, but it does what it does very well. Bonus points for a B couple as compelling as the A couple. I've also been a big Kang Hoon fan since Little Women, and there are a couple of other actors in here that I'm always glad to see working.
5. Perfect Marriage Revenge: Tour de force makjang. Came out of nowhere and blew me away. Hits all the right beats, and unexpectedly fun (and was a nice break from the heaviness of My Dearest for me). This was a good year for jaded and slightly unhinged transmigrated FL's back for their #revenge (see also: Story of Kunning Palace in CDrama land), and I was here for it. Also features one of the spiciest make-out scenes of the year, 10/10 recommend
4. See You in My 19th Life: Absolutely loved this haunting, melancholy, and sometimes unexpectedly goofy reincarnation drama. I loved the webtoon and had high expectations, and this drama largely met them! The continuing relationship between sisters Ji-Eum (Shin Hye Sun) and Cho-Won (Ha Yoon Kyung) was a special highlight for me, and while Shin Hye Sun is already a never-miss for me, I'm especially looking forward to whatever Ha Yoon Kyung does next. I prefer the ending of the Webtoon to the KDrama, but I'm still delighted this drama exists and am glad I watched it.
3. The Interest of Love: Look, I loved this drama. Even though it seemed on the surface like nothing but *mess* in the interpersonal lives of these characters working at a bank on the border between a rich and poor neighborhood in Seoul, it nonetheless had some of the most searing class commentary of the year for me. I also love an FL who will (spoiler) pack up her things and disappear at the drop of a hat, even if no one else will understand her decision to do so, because she just cannot deal anymore (see also: the FL in Lovestruck in the City, whom I also love but everyone else hated). This drama kept me gleefully coming back every week in a year where not a lot of others did.
2. Call It Love: A revenge slice of life melodrama that I found unexpectedly touching in its deep melancholy. Loved not only the main couple, but the relationship between the siblings and their pharmacist bestie. A lovely character study. (Also I somehow ended up watching this at the same time as Till the End of the Moon and Li Susu as Ye Xiwu's hidden identity/revenge plot, which was unexpectedly stressful! Had a very "it's the same picture" moment despite two dramas in two genres that could not be further apart.) If you missed this one (and since it aired on Disney+, you might have--Disney+'s effects on the KDrama streaming ecosystem will be the death of me), it's worth seeking out!
1. My Dearest (Parts 1 and 2): Kind of feels like everyone has said everything there is to say about sageuk of truly epic proportions, but it blew me away as well. Epic romance? Check. Twisty political machinations? Check. Heartwarming friendships between women? Check. Strong ensemble cast? And my top FL of the year, Lady Gil-Chae, played to perfection by Ahn Eun-Jin. I've adored her since Hospital Playlist, and am delighted that she's getting the attention and the roles she deserves. Namkoong Min also a top contender for ML of the year as Lee Jang-Hyun. Part 2 dragged for me a bit in places after a nearly perfect Part 1, but such a great drama overall.
Favorite Drama of the Year: My Dearest. See above.
Favorite Female Character: I mean, it's gotta be Gil Chae from My Dearest, right? She starts out as such a spiteful, spoiled noblewoman, and then turns out to have a core of pure steel. Turns out all her conniving and strategizing, which went towards causing mischief in the village, really just needed a proper outlet. While I would never want to be in the circumstances in which she found herself, if I did, she's exactly who I would want on my side.
Favorite Male Character: Everything's coming up My Dearest this year, because this one is Lee Jang-Hyun in My Dearest as well. Checks the box for my competence kink, and has a knack for showing up just when Gil-Chae needs him, even at great personal cost. Also a smart-ass, which I probably like a bit too much in a man.
Favorite Secondary Female Character: Cho-Won from See You in My 19th Life. Her relationship with her reincarnated older sister was almost more compelling to me than the main romance sometimes, and really helped develop how the ties that bind us are not just romantic ones. Also she was just super cute
Favorite Secondary Male Character: Could have picked anyone from Team Himbo in Alchemy of Souls, but gonna have to give this one to Go Won, himbo prince of my heart
Favorite Ship: Again, it's gotta be Gil-Chae and Lee Jang-Hyun in My Dearest. Sometimes, there are drama couples that nearly cause me pain when they are apart, and these two quickly became one of them. Though their relationships is hardly functional for much of it, through all that push and pull, they ultimately learn how to show up for each other. Also, their *chemistry* is insane!
Favorite Secondary Ship: I loved Hye-Seong and Sung Joon, the B couple in Call it Love. Seeing the SFL grow more comfortable with herself after a truly shitty ending to her previous relationship was a nice respite from the hidden identity stress of the A couple in this one. I'm also a sucker for a good romance where you start to see someone you've long taken for granted differently. (Close Runner Up: Cho Won and Do-Yun in See You in My 19th Life)
Favorite Platonic Relationship: Gil-Chae, Eun-Ae, and their maids, Jong Jong and Bong Doo, in My Dearest. I loved loved loved the relationship between these women in this drama, and part of the reason the second half of the drama suffered a bit for me is because of how far it moved away from this core relationship. They were ride or die for each other more than the majority of the men in their lives, and I loved that for them.
Trope that Needs to Die: While I find murder plots in rom coms tedious at the best of times, homophobic murder plots are really not it. Quit it, y'all. It's not cute.
Dramas I Missed: Moon in the Day, The Story of Park's Marriage Contract, and Tell Me That You Love Me (grrr Disney+ on this one) are on the list for next year. I'm probably missing others.
Non-2023 Drama Spotlight: Finally went back and watched Do You Like Brahms? for a hit of Park Eun-Bin. A lovely, if also melancholy, slice of life romance that's just as much about what to do when a (career related) dream that you've worked really, really hard for just isn't going to come through as it is about the main romance. Also made me fall in love with Kim Min-Jae and his lovely deep voice, enough so that I also then went back and finally watched Dali and the Cocky Prince, which was also a treat. Recommend both.
Most Looking Forward To: I continue to yearn for a Yumi's Cells 3, and who's to say if that one will ever come through, but I'm putting it out into the universe anyway. More realistically, I'm looking forward to the surprisingly stacked line-up of sageuks coming up, including Captivating the King and Love Song for Illusion.

Hobie has a bunch of common rock doves. He loves them, cherishes them but they re not really fit to be messenger birds.
He's rescued several pet pigeons, rehoming some to his friends so they can also send him messages but also offering them to people looking to home new species.
He's got a danzing highflier from an exotic pet collector who he fought one time. He's got an american show racer from someone who loved to illegally race pigeons and was known for killing any pigeons that lost. He also once found a classic old frill pigeon in a small cage in an abandoned building. He wasn't at his best but Hobie took him in and nursed him back to health.
But his absolute favourite and his main messenger and sidekick is this English Carrier he called Dominique. That same spelling. It is the ugliest pigeon you'll ever find on EARTH. English carriers are kinda ugly in general but the one he has is just fugly to the point it's worrying. But he LOVES this lil guy to death. Literally the favourite, he'll sneak dried fruits and special seeds into his meals (he does the same for all the other pigeons but for some reason he's the most secretive with Dominique.)
When you start dating him, he keeps a sharp eye on you. To a suspicious degree. You're constantly asking him what he's upto- what he's planning but he just waves you off.
And then one day he comes to your house with a decently sized wooden bird cage, bird food, appropiate litter, four small bowls and two pigeons.
A Mourning Dove and a Lucerne.
You're quick to ask him where he got them from. Chasing after him to try get an answer. The Mourning Dove is pretty easy to find, you can admit. But a Lucerne??? How???????
Up till this day he hasn't told you. But they're your sweethearts.
When he wants to "wife" you up (despite the gender), he calls up a favour from an old friend and brings home a new little addition.
A turtle dove.
CRYING, THIS MAKES ME MISS MY BUDGIES FOR SOME REASON

“Ahhhhhh! That hit the spot,” I said as I leaned back while hooking my feet around the wooden picnic table’s support beam to keep from falling backward. Rubbing my tummy, I savored the aftertaste of the cheeseburger and fry combo I had eaten. It was far from the best burger I’d ever eaten but just about anything would’ve tasted like heaven with Becca at my side.
Watching me finish my food like a hawk, Becca waited for me to lean forward in my seat again before reaching toward me with a napkin and gently wiping the crumbs away from my mouth “You did a great job following my instructions to eat delicately. I should only have to touch up your lips. Well done, Cherry-baby” she said, remarking on the minimal damage to the diligent work she had done painting my face. Her complement caused me to retreat into my shell like a turtle as I shrunk down and hid myself behind my shaky hands without letting them touch my face, unable to suppress my unadulterated happiness. I could listen to her dote on me for hours.
*Peck!*
Suddenly, something warm, wet, and gentle grazed the side of my face. My mind skipped the tracks as my hand cupped my burning cheek, the remnants of Becca’s lipstick mark dusting my fingertips with a dash of red.
“Hey now, no touching. Remember?” said Becca, flicking the back of my hand and nudging it away from my face, “Besides, I want everyone to know exactly who you belong to.” It was clear she expected me to wear the imprint of her lips on my skin for the remainder of our date; an embarrassing display that had me feeling unquestionably giddy.
Standing up from the picnic table, Becca quickly circled until she was stationed behind me, offering me no time to climb out of my seat as well. This was intentional as a pair of loving arms soon draped across my chest and began playing with the bow sown to the chest of my dress. “Hmmm...I don’t know about you but I’m still a bit peckish. How about we stop for some dessert before our next ride? Doesn’t that sound fun?” she cooed, beckoning me to follow her like an obedient pet.
Nodding my head, my voice cracked as I muttered, “That- *cough* That sounds nice.” I winced as an immediate cackle succeeded my fatal squeak, further burying me in blushiness.
Becca’s laughter would come to an abrupt end, though, as an unfortunate sight graced her line of sight. She lowered her head and ducked down, prompting me to do the same. “Shit, what the fuck are they…Ugh! Nevermind. We need to get out of here,” she said, her mood starkly shifting from romantic and bright to serious and distressed.
“Wait, what? What’s going on?” I said, naively stretching my neck upward as I looked in the same direction Becca had.
Grabbing the collar of my shirt, Becca attempted to tug me downward, whispering loudly, “Nonono! Cherry, get down!”
Unfortunately, it was too late for that. It was only a split-second but a split-second was all that was needed as I noticed a distinct pair of eyes with the same colored irises as mine. “A-Abby,” I muttered, spotting my sister at the exact same moment that she spotted me. A cruel smile formed as she pointed in my general direction.
Why the hell was Abby here?! We were two towns away from where we lived. Moreover, she hated county fairs, giving her less than zero reason to be in the same place Becca and I were. I wanted to run as fast as my legs could carry me. It was bad enough to be femmed up at their hands. To have them catch me voluntarily dressing this way was a death sentence. But my jelly legs refused to move, locking me in place as my sister waded through the busy crowd with her usual posse of Kiah and Sarah at her side. “B-Becca, can you help me-…Becca?” I said, angling my head backward, only to notice that my date had seemingly vanished, leaving me all alone at the picnic table in my sissy dress and diapers.
“Well, well, well! What are the odds we’d run into my little brother while we’re here,” said Abby, refusing to acknowledge me as her equal twin while I was dressed the way I was, “Though, I’m not sure I should be using a manly term like “brother” so loosely.”
I could feel my soul actively dying with each snicker that came out of my sister's mouth. Any happiness I had attained from my date had been fully erased. In a last-ditch effort to spare myself further humiliation, I tried to get up from my seat so I could make a break for it. Sadly, I wouldn’t even get through step one of my makeshift plan as Kiah’s heavy hand planted itself on my shoulder, keeping me locked in place. It was a harsh dichotomy from the way Becca had stood over me only a moment before.
Scooching in next to me with her phone in hand, Sarah wrapped an abrasive arm around my satin-covered waist as she displayed a picture of me waiting in line for the Ferris Wheel with a diaper poking out from under the skirt ever so slightly. “I almost didn’t believe it when I saw you. I’ve never been so happy that my mom made me come home from college this weekend,” she said, squeezing me and forcing me to endure another round of high-pitched giggling, “Who’s your little friend, by the way? I never got a good look at who your diapee buddy was.”
“Yeah, that’s what I wanna know,” said Abby, plopping herself down in front of Becca’s tray and putting up her feet on my thighs, “Like what, did you candy ass start scrolling through Grindr the second we freed you until you found a fellow sissy loser? You know, you weren’t supposed to enjoy what we did to you.”
Listening to Abby and Sarah’s dialogue, it became obvious why Becca fled from the scene at lightning speed. They had no idea what secrets their peppy bombshell of a friend was harboring. Perhaps I could use this to my advantage. Outing Becca as my date did had the potential to move the target off of my back and onto hers. And it wasn’t like she had any problem with ditching me to save herself.
However, as I looked down at the candid photo of Becca and myself waiting for our turn on the Ferris Wheel, my mind leaped back to the amazing time we’d had together up to this point. Becca didn’t have to make herself vulnerable to me but she did. Regardless of her present cowardice, that was something I refused to let my sister take away from me. “Well…I did enjoy it,” I said, putting on as confident of a face as I could muster, “S-So what?”
Staring up at each other in disbelief, none of the three girls were exactly sure how to respond. It was only when Abby forced out a laugh that other girls started chortling alongside her. Steeling my composure to the best of my ability, I closed my eyes, drowned out their voices, and let the stain of Becca’s kiss continue to burn on my cheek; its warmth strengthening my resolve.
“Haha! You trying to act tough when dressed like this is so adorable,” said Abby in between cackling, turning up the dial on her viciousness in an attempt to get me to break, “I can’t wait to get home. The four of us are going to have a blast burning all your old, icky boy clothes. A pansy like you clearly doesn’t need them anymore. Just wait until Dad finds ou-”
“HEY!”
In an instant, the noisy, bustling fairgrounds went quiet, as did the mockery of my sister and her friends. My eyes shot open, allowing me to witness Becca’s spectacular return. Marching up to our table, she physically shoved Sarah and Kiah away from me, freeing me from their shackle-like grip. She didn’t dare make eye contact with the others as she pulled me out of my seat and into her arms. “Sorry, I was gone for so long, sweetie,” she said, pretending as though the world around us didn’t exist as she straightened out my skirt before threading her fingers through mine and escorting me away from the table, “C’mon, we’ll get your lipstick fixed up while we wait in line for the next ride.”
Glancing back at the picnic table shrinking in the distance, I relished the stunned silence that Becca left my sister and her friends in. The look on Abby’s face specifically was priceless. Part of me wished I could stay a few moments longer so as to record every inch of my sister’s priceless expression to memory. Unsurprisingly, that small part stood no chance against the warpath Becca was forging as she rushed us away from the food vendors, her eyes locked forward. I could only guess at the number of troubling things swirling around in her mind.
Eventually, we stopped at the tail end of a nearly empty line for a dark ride auspiciously named, The Tunnel of Love. I could only guess that Becca wanted to get out of sight as soon as possible. Tragically, the emotions that Becca and I were stuck processing were anything but lovey-dovey feelings. “Hey…are you okay?” I asked, catching my breath after speed-walking across half the fairground, “I totally get it if you wanna call it after that.”
“No!” shouted Becca instinctively, forcefully clearing her throat afterward in an attempt to cover up her panicked refusal, “No, I’m okay. I promise. I want the date to keep going…unless, of course, you’re ready for it to end.”
Shaking my head vehemently, I wasn’t ready for this day to end by a long shot. “Nuh-uh, I really don’t want this to end. This…this is the most fun I’ve ever had in my life,” I said earnestly, my cheeks filling with a different kind of blush; the romantic kind.
Becca’s face took on a similar hue, allowing her to flash a smile for the first time since the incident. “Me too. I love getting to spend time with you like this. It’s not really something I’ve ever gotten to do before,” she said, her feet squirming in place thanks to the rawness of her sentiment, “Promise you won’t get upset but…there’s something I wasn’t completely honest about.”
The deepening of Becca’s voice told me everything that I needed to know. Whatever she was about to tell me was something of incredible importance, maybe even something she’d never admitted to anyone else. I nodded to her again and listened closely.
“I lied to you when I said that…the diapers I made you wear were an ex-boyfriend’s,” said Becca, unable to face me as her watering eyes traced the cracks in the cement, “It was just such an exciting opportunity. That stunt you pulled at your sister’s sleepover? I’d read countless stories with scenarios just like it. So…I decided to take advantage of that, and I had to lie to everyone, including you, to pull it off. I’m sorry. I know you must hate me now for getting you tangled up in my kink so I’ll understand if-”
*Peck!*
Ceasing my chance to return the affection Becca had bestowed upon me earlier, I leaned in while she was mid-sentence and placed a kiss on her cheek, leaving the same mark behind that she had. “Just letting everyone know who you belong to, right?” I said brashly, my heart and lungs imploding simultaneously in a display of shameless romanticism.
Much like I had done, Becca’s hand rose to meet the kissy mark left behind on her face. Unlike me, though, she needed no one to instruct her to keep from wiping it off. I could feel myself growing stiff as we gazed at each other, aroused purely by the love I was feeling. Well, love and the softness of my soaking wet diaper.
Wrapping her arms around me, Becca and I cozied up to each other. Our next stop: The Tunnel of Love. I couldn’t imagine a more fitting destination.

TW: loss of a pet, isolation
Word count: 1.3K
~~~~~
If you were being honest, the past few days were a nightmare for you. The worst thing to happen to a pet owner occurred, and the fresh wound to your heart ached more and more as you thought about your beloved friend.
Your furry companion had passed.
It was overnight and painless for the little guy. You woke up to the corpse of your childhood pet laying on the floor next to your bed. You didn’t even brush your teeth before collapsing to your knees, sobs wrecking through your whole body. It felt as if the world was beginning to crush you as your tears fell onto the limp body lying peacefully before you.
So you took your pet to the local pet hospital, made arrangements, and got your pet’s ashes back in a smooth sealed wooden box. On the side sat a metal plate with their name.
You’ve been an emotional wreck since.
Two days had passed, your phone notifications blowing up in the meantime. You hardly noticed through your zombie-like state: tired with on and off crying, unable to sleep. You weren’t eating, you’d only throw it up during your sob sessions anyways. Your phone continued to buzz as you stared lifelessly at the spot where your best friend once lay. It wasn’t until the persistent buzzing stopped that you looked at your phone.
Forty-two texts.
Twenty-three missed calls.
A long chain of unopened Snapchats.
Five different messages through Instagram.
All of them coming from your favorite turtles and human.
You let them worry.
A sigh escaped your lips. You hadn’t told anyone of what happened just yet. If you were being honest, you didn’t even want to get up from where you sat on your bed, curled up against the headrest with your comforter wrapped around you. A few more tears streamed down your face before you put on a brave face.
You opened the messages.
Various mentions of movie nights and what the group should watch, who should bring what to the gathering, and invitations to hang out. Eventually, they turned into worried messages wondering where you were and if you were okay. You saw they had agreed on a movie night at the lair tonight.
Your thumbs tapped on the smooth glass of the screen that illuminated your face. You knew the blue light did nothing to hide your tear stained cheeks and puffy red eyes. It's lucky you're here by yourself and that no one had barged in on your isolation of grief.
Hey guys, sorry to make you worry. I haven’t been feeling great but I’ll totally make it to the movie night.
Sent.
It took everything in you to peel off the comforter, navigate the growing mess in your room, and grab clean clothes to take a shower. It took everything in you not to cry. Once you had rubbed shampoo to your scalp, you ran out of everything and your tears blended in with the water running down your body. Your sobs echoed off the walls of the enclosed space and what you originally anticipated to be a ten minute shower turned into a 45 minute crying period. But at least you were clean.
With slow movements, you reached out and grabbed your towel to wrap around your dripping form before stepping out of the shower. Starting at your shoulders, you felt a chill move down your spine, little bumps accompanying it on your arms and legs. You looked at yourself in the mirror, water dripping down your face and onto the towel and floor. What was supposed to be the white part of your eyes were now tinted pink. The stinging in your eyes returned as your lips began to spread thin. You were so tired of crying, but what else could you do?
Your best friend is gone, how can you simply move along?
You heard a soft knock on the door to your bathroom and you froze.
“Hey, you good in there?” You recognized the voice as Leo’s, the sword wielding terrapin who wore a blue mask. “Get dressed quick, okay? We all miss you. I miss you a whole lot more than the others though, obviously.”
You thought back to your messages, most of them came from him. They probably thought you would respond to Leo easier as you were closest to him. There was a pain in your chest and a heaviness in your heart when you registered his words and you finally realized how your sudden disappearance affected the others. You felt your eyes well up again.
“I will,” you said, your voice only just loud enough for him to hear and moved quickly to dry yourself off and put on your clothes. You tried to ignore the stray tears that fell onto the floor or on your bare feet.
When you were presentable with brushed hair and a washed face, you exited the bathroom. The door creaking made Leo turn to look at you. From the doorframe of the bathroom, you saw him standing next to where your pet’s ashes sat. You looked into Leo’s eyes with your own eyes that were stained pink and felt yourself crumble. Leo managed to get to you just in time as you began to sob and held you in his arms.
He was patient, and while he was cold blooded, very warm. You gripped the back of his blue hoodie that he wore as a disguise for dear life, like if you let go, he would disappear. He was now a lifeline, a preserver dragging you back to shore from large crashing waves that nearly drowned you. Leo’s large three fingered hand ran down your hair in an attempt to soothe your crying.
When your sobs turned into soft hiccups, he spoke up. “Is…” Leo tried to figure out his wording. “Is this why you went off the grid?” You knew he meant your pet’s death and nodded into his chest. You felt bad, the front of his hoodie was wet with your tears. “Oh, sweetie,” he mumbled as he pulled away and pushed the wet hair that stuck to your face back. “You’ll be okay. It was just their time.”
You couldn’t help but sniffle at his words.
“Hey, come on. How about that movie night? It’ll help get your mind off of everything.”
You nodded and hugged him again. “Thank you.”
It didn’t take you long to pack up and get ready to head out with Leo on your metaphorical tail.
“We were thinking something action but maybe an action comedy?” Leo looked at you as you put on your shoes. He was standing by the front door. You shrugged.
“I can use a laugh.” With all the crying you’ve been doing, it’ll be nice to do the opposite. Maybe the ache in your heart will be lifted.
Leo put a hand on his chest, feigning offense. “Am I not funny enough?” He scoffed, but you saw the corners of his lips perk up.
“It feels like you’ve been walking on eggshells since you got here,” you felt yourself grow sad once more but decided to continue with a recovery line, “but you sometimes have a few good lines here and there,” you finished. You stood up from your spot on the couch. You felt a smirk of your own begin to grow across your lips.
“Walking on eggshells? Me?” Leo scoffed for real but smiled widely at you nonetheless. You knew he was doing his best to try and cheer you up.
“I know, it’s hard to believe.” You mirrored his smile as you made your way over to him. He opened the door for you and led you out of your apartment to begin your walk to the Lair.
“Hey, Leo?” You turned to him as he placed his arm around your shoulder, holding you close. You welcomed his warmth with a soft hum.
“What’s up?” His voice was soft again, kind. You smiled warmly at him.
“Thank you.”
JoJos playing minecraft headcanons (I hope you enjoy it!!)
Jonathan- tried playing with a keyboard but his fingers are too big so he uses a controller. Refuses to kill the iron golems in villages and loves trading with villagers, even though he wishes they had dialogue. Killed a pig because he was on the verge of starvation and then decided to stock up on bread and potatoes right after because he felt so bad. Cannot figure out redstone for the life of him; can only work a lever and button. He prefers sleeping through the night because he doesn't want to deal with the zombies but can somehow deal with the skeletons and creepers. Jonathan likes to play on easy mode to explore and find pottery sherds to make at least a few pots to decorate his house. Has yet to get into the nether or enter the end. Has not started a raid and does not plan on ever doing so.
Joseph- plays with the keyboard and has almost broken it multiple times due to how hard he accidentally presses on the keys. Can only do simple redstone and even then, he somehow messes it up to the point it works out in the end (he doesn’t know how he did it but pretends he knew what he was doing like always) Likes trading with the villagers and has made a mini villager trading hall so he doesn’t have to run to catch any villagers or worry about them dying in a raid. Yes, he had died a few times because he was not prepared for them. Would like to try mods but he can’t figure out how to install them properly. Once he went into a server and figured out how to get a multiple diamond glitch but got banned once the other players found out how he had so many diamonds without ever being in a cave. He’s still mad about it. Once died in a wooden mansion and got so mad he didn’t place down a bed in it to save his progress, he quit and almost deleted the game.
Jotaro- didn’t care about the game and only knew the basics until he heard about the aquatic update. Looked up everything that would be included in the update and tried to play it on the keyboard so he could figure out how the game works. Prefers the controller over the keyboard. Knows how to do some redstone but barely makes anything using it. He had accidentally made a fishing pole while crafting; immediately went to find the nearest ocean or river to use it. Gets disappointed when the fish he pulls out are dead and looks up how to keep them alive. Uses the last few iron ingots he had to make a bucket and capture a fish. Makes a temporary pond until he makes a huge aquarium that connects to the ocean so the fish are all free to swim along with the other sea creatures. Has named at least one of each sea creature with the name tags. Once played for almost 6 hours straight due to being super focused on building something and didn’t realize it until he looked over at the clock.
Josuke- uses the controller instead of the keyboard. Only plays on multiplayer or different servers but has a few testing worlds so he won’t mess up as much (like his father, he does mess up quite a lot, even after perfecting whatever he’s working on in his testing worlds, but it always works out in the end) he loathes the skeletons to the point where he was searching for a mod on reddit and other sites at 2am to get rid of the skeletons in the game. Knows alot about redstone and has many redstone builds in his testing worlds. Has killed almost every turtle he sees in the game by pure accident and feels guilty everytime, even with his fear of them. He is the player to go afk and have dinner while he leaves one of his farms to fill up his chests. He almost died to a skeleton doing this but managed to save himself; that was the night he went hunting for a mod to get rid of the skeletons. Has named his pet cat and dog after his best friends; has also named every spider after another person (I’m sure we all know who we’re talking about) He has a custom skin and surprisingly, people like his skin. Starts raids so he can get totems, but has not realized he can turn it into a farm to make it easier; no one has told him yet.
Giorno- likes using a controller but can play on the keyboard as well. Made a huge animal farm for every animal he could get. Loves using the bonemeal to gather more flowers and make it look nice around his house. Can do some complex redstone but likes keeping it simple. He owns a server and had banned a player for using a multi diamond glitch; he probably would have allowed them to keep using it in private as long as he got a few out of it, but he and a few others had caught him using it when they went to surprise him with a bunch of food when they heard they didn’t have much food. Died a few times because he forgets he’s not in creative mode. Makes a ton of cookies and shares them with everyone once a week because he always makes too much. Has no weapon preference. Can never find a village without someone’s help.
Jolyne- started playing once she found out about the nether and the end. Prefers the end because it’s easy for her to kill the ender dragon. Loves getting gold for her golden apples since she has amazing luck when it comes to finding resources. Once made a nether portal before getting iron armor and hasn’t been able to do it since. Really good at using the bow. Loves playing multiplayer with her friends and being stupid late at night until early morning. Watches playthroughs of the game during dinner at home (she’s so me haha) and uses any tips from said playthrough into her own worlds. The one to go to if it involves the ocean monuments; she has a strategy that she uses almost every time she needs to enter one. Really good at complex redstone and uses it for her hidden base in a server she has with her friends. Loves making the cookies and cakes since she always liked how they look; sometimes has to go grab a snack to feel immersed within the game.
When the dragons fly(book 2)
With Helena's encouragement, you leave the village to investigate the strange pulling you felt toward the forest. Aelon and his friends end up facing a peculiar problem.
Chapter 3
Warnings: mentions of medicines, an injured eye, someone being a creep, sensing strange calling, orcs, panic, being bitten once, an angry old man and his turtle.
---------------------------------------
You dropped down the pile of wood into the stock. The wooden blocks clacked against each other while you brushed your hands from the wood dust and dirt. You looked up to Dwenn, who leisurely rocked on his chair and held his pipe in his hands, releasing small puffs of smoke.
"Alright, that should be all. The floors are clean, the orders are ready to be delivered, and you have enough wood to warm up the house for a few days,” you said as you stepped beside him.
"Thank you, (Name). I have nothing else for you to do, so you are free to go and spend the day as you like," Dwenn blew a pillar of smoke from his mouth before pulling the pipe between his lips. His once-injured eye now covered with an eyepatch.
"Have you remembered to take your medicine for today?" you asked.
Dwenn growled, slightly annoyed by the mention of his medicine. "I think I will be fine today without that nasty liquid in my body. I don't want to feel tired all the time," he complained, making you shake your head with a smile. "That medicine has helped you heal from your injuries, and do not forget that I've already allowed you to use your pipe against Eda's strict orders," you said with a scolding tone while handing him the medicine you carried on yourself, in case he forgot or ignored it on purpose.
"Fine..." Dwenn grabbed the vial. He popped off the cork and drank the medicine with one gulp.
Helena walked over to you with a positive attitude. "You're looking better every day, Dwenn," she stated. "Maybe a few more days, and you will be already running around like before," she added.
"I hope so, Helena. Unless I fall asleep and never wake up since I already sleep so much." Dwenn replied with a dramatic tone.
"Rest is good for you. Once you're all better, you can stay awake as long as you want," Helena said, then slipped her hand around your arm.
"Can I rob (Name) for a moment?" Helena asked.
"All the day's work has already been done. She's all yours," Dwenn waved his hand. "Great. Come along," Helena smiled, pulling you away before you could protest.
You two then walked through the village. "What's on your mind today?" you questioned as the woman beside you was more energetic than usual.
"I just need someone to complain to and share certain rumors," Helena grinned.
"I've heard from my father that orcs have been appearing in these parts more frequently, sometimes even in packs," she began. "According to my father, they've been behaving strangely. All he could discern was that the orcs seem to be searching for something," she explained, gaining your interest.
"What could they be looking for?" you asked.
"No one knows yet. All we know is that they are looking for something here. It started happening a month after Aelon and Samuel’s return, along with the well’s water,” Helena answered as your attention drifted toward the forest, the strange feeling from yesterday coming back.
You do not know why, but you have been bothered by the strange sensation since you returned from your trip to the town. It was like a pestering call.
"I have also seen Ennard looking at me strangely again. I hope he's not up to swooning me again, as he likes to call it," Helena said with a tone of annoyance. "When will he understand that I am not interested in him? He's just as old as my father," she added as you continued looking toward the forest.
"I have also heard that Mr.Figwitt's pet turtle has gone missing again. I wonder what's that about," she said as you two arrived at your house. She then notices your absent attention and sees you staring at the forest.
"(Name)! Are you there?!" she waved her hand in front of your eyes, startling you for a moment.
"Sorry..." you quickly uttered as you turned your gaze back on her.
"Is there something bothering you today? You have been rather distracted lately," Helena asked, crossing her arms.
"No! It's just…” you tried to think of a way to explain it. “I've been having this odd feeling since yesterday, like... I have a strange urge to go out and find what is causing that feeling," you described.
"Now, that is interesting. Maybe you should go there and find it," Helena suggested. "I... don't know if I should," you hesitated.
"You're not doing anything for the day. If it's Aelon you're worried about, I could watch him," Helena offered, pointing at herself.
"Okay... alright. Are you sure about this?" you asked, slightly dumbfounded.
"Yes! What's the worst that could happen? Now go!" she pushed you toward the village.
"Okay… I might as well go buy the duck I forgot," you said, turning toward your house, where you could hear Aelon practicing in the backyard.
"Aelon!" you called out.
"Yeah!" his voice called back.
"I'm leaving to get some duck! Helena will watch over you!" You yelled.
"Okay!" Aelon yelled and continued his training.
"Make sure he doesn't get in trouble," you said, glancing at Helena, who only grinned in return. “Yeah, yeah, now go find the source of that mystery feeling,” she added as you walked away.
Aelon practiced hard with his training sword, focusing on his movements and footwork while trying not to let anything distract him. Beads of sweat formed on his skin as he slashed through the air, maintaining controlled and steady breathing.
His ears then picked up someone running around his house.
"Hey, Ae!" Eweniel called out in a hurry. "Rodrick asked us to meet," she exclaimed. "Why? What's wrong?" Aelon asked, stopping in his tracks. "I don't know, but he said it was an emergency. Come on!" she said hastily.
Aelon's eyes widened. He dropped his training sword and followed Eweniel as the two ran around his house.
"Where are you two going?" Helena questioned when she saw them. She was sitting on the porch, doing stitching.
"To see Rodrick. Can I go?" Aelon asked.
"Sure. Just stay in sight of people and stay out of trouble. Your sister won't be happy if you do," Helena pointed at him.
"I will, thanks!" Aelon replied as he ran off with Eweniel. Helena only shook her head with a smile as she continued stitching the cloth in her hands.
The two arrived at the tree, where they usually met to play or plan pranks together. Rodrick, along with Ramuel and Samuel, were waiting there. Rodrick bore a panicked expression, pacing back and forth while fumbling his thumbs—something he did when he was nervous or scared.
"What's the matter? What happened?" Aelon asked as he arrived with Eweniel.
"Thank the Eru! You're here!" Rodrick said with relief. "Okay... umm... have you guys heard about Greeny going missing?" he asked. "Mr. Figwitt's pet?" Ramuel questioned with a confused tone. "Yeah. Greeny— she went missing, and Mr. Figwitt is not happy about it," Rodrick nervously said. "Alright... and why are you so worried about it?" Aelon questioned with a frown.
"I might be responsible... why she's gone missing," Rodrick answered. "And Mr. Figwitt doesn't know it yet," he added, and his friends groaned and yelled in surprise.
"No wonder you called it an emergency. Mr. Figwitt will eat you alive if he finds out you lost his pet turtle," Eweniel remarked.
"I know! I need your help to find her!" Rodrick said, flinging his arms like a panicked bird.
Aelon and his friends remained quiet, thinking about the situation. Personally, Aelon would stay away from Greeny since the little monstrosity had bitten him since the first time he saw it, but he did not want to leave his friend at the mercy of Figwitt, who was known to dislike children. He was a grumpy old man, who looked closest to a feral goblin if Aelon ever came to see one. And the only thing that ever made him happy was his pet turtle, who was just as mean as him.
"Okay... I help you," Aelon sighed, dropping his shoulders.
"Really? Oh, thank you, Aelon! You are a real friend!" Rodrick cried tears of joy.
"Whoa, you're brave! I thought you were scared of Greeny?" Eweniel grinned. " I am, but I am more afraid of Figwitt, and it would be pretty cruel to leave Rodrick under his mercy," Aelon said.
"Alright. I guess I'll help too," Eweniel said.
"We would help too, but..." Samuel hesitated, glancing nervously at Ramuel.
"Our parents said we need an adult if we want to go anywhere," Ramuel explained, looking at the ground.
"But then they would probably tell Figwitt if they knew I lost Greeny," Rodrick said fearfully.
An idea then popped into Aelon’s head: a possible solution.
"We could ask Helena. She's supposed to watch me and she likes keeping secrets," he suggested. "Okay. She should be fine," the twins said.
"Alright, let's go," Eweniel declared as the group left their meeting place to find the missing turtle.
After leaving the village and traveling some distance, your horse whined as you came to a stop.
You stared at the forest on the spot where you first started feeling the strange sensation to follow and find. The mysterious pull of the forest intensified, its call growing stronger the longer you fixed your gaze upon the wooded expanse. The enchanting allure beckoned you with an irresistible potency, tugging at the threads of your curiosity.
Climbing down from your horse, you secured the reins to the nearest tree, ensuring your companion would wait patiently behind while you went to investigate the forest.
As you wandered deeper into the forest, the strange pulling tugged you toward the direction it wanted you to go.
You arrived at a rugged stone hill. As the pulling told you to climb, you cautiously stepped over the rocks, ascending higher till you began to hear scratching and chirping sounds, piquing your curiosity.
As you scale the uneven rocks, the source of the commotion becomes clear as your eyes fall upon a large nest. Your eyes widen in a mixture of shock, surprise, and excitement. "Oh, hello—" you begin to say as the small eyes focus on you.
D&D Tarot Set masterpost
I made a tarot series based on the PCs and significant NPCs in our dnd campaign. Feel free to ask me about any of them!
Disclaimer: I took a lot of inspiration and direction from the Hero Forge minis my group members made of their characters, especially for weapons and armour I wasn't comfortable designing myself.
[Image ID: The Fool. A jaunty fairy with curly hair, a fancy coat and green/orange butterfly wings hovers in the foreground. He carries two wands emitting various coloured lights. Behind him there is an upturned spectral hand, below him is a grimoire page on devil pacts torn in half, and above him is a branch with several oak leaves and acorns.]
[Image ID: The Magician. A haughty fairy with slicked-back reddish hair, fanciful robes and deep blue wings hovers with a polished staff in his right hand and a swirl of green smoke surrounding his raised left hand. A sword, a cup, a pentacle and a wand hover around him, wreathed in the same green smoke. A cloudy infinity symbol hangs above him and an oak branch in brown line art sits below him.]
[Image ID: The High Priestess. The drow goddess Lolth perches on a glowing half-moon seat. Cobwebs trail across her deep grey skin, her white hair hangs across her shoulders, and she wears a malevolent grin. She is gesturing over a crystal ball balanced on her knees while she holds up an aged scroll with demonic runes in her left hand. Two black pillars inscribed with her spiderweb symbol flank her, trailing more cobwebs.]
[Image ID: The Empress. A gnome woman with a long blonde braid and a confident smile lounges in a blue chair. She wears scale armour and a chainmail shirt over a turquoise tunic and a crimson cloak trails off the left side of the seat. She holds a jeweled longsword aloft in her left hand. A spiked golden crown sits on her head. At the foot of her chair is a pie in a white dish with a feminine symbol formed of pastry on top. In the distance behind her is a forest treeline.]
[Image ID: The Emperor. A purple tiefling sits back comfortably in an imposing wooden throne with one boot up on the other knee. He has small horns curving back from his forehead and long dark hair under a fancy golden crown. He wears a luxurious red robe and his fingers are adorned with rings. He holds a black crystal staff or sceptre loosely in his left hand.]
[Image ID: The Hierophant. A lion-themed khajiit with golden eyes stands between two pillars topped with sunray decorations. He wears silver and black plate armour and a white tabard emblazoned with a yellow sun, with a black and gold spiked flail tucked into a hip sheath. His left hand is placed on his chest and his right is raised in benediction. In the foreground a white cat and a black cat sit at attention. A golden key floats above him.]
[Image ID: The Lovers. Two women are embracing and kissing in the foreground. The first is shorter than the other, a barefooted kitsune with long dark-blonde hair, fluffy fox ears and a single fox tail; she wears a pink kimono with flowers embroidered on it. The second figure is a tiefling with dark blue skin and dark brown hair, horns that curve back from her temples and a slender tail with a heart-shaped tip; she wears a simple peasant blouse and skirt and a flour-dusted apron with a rolling pin tucked in her apron. The branch of a cherry tree extends above them with a small black bat hanging watchfully; pink and white sakura petals fall around the couple.]
[Image ID: The Chariot. A brown ox with white socks and soft brown eyes, wearing a golden laurel circlet, pulls a simple wooden cart. A river flows beside her and stars hang above her. Riding on the back of the cart is a small orange turtle with a dark brown shell laced with fiery designs.]
[Image ID: Strength. A young half-elf man in leather armour with his brown hair tied in a topknot crouches to pet a mimic shaped like a treasure chest. The boy wears simple country clothing and carries a steely blue battleaxe across his back. The mimic slobbers as it enjoys its scritches.]
[Image ID: The Hermit. A tanned elf with a shaved head and a white scalp-lock stands contemplatively on a mountaintop, with other mountains fading into the distance behind him. He wears simple monastic robes and sandals, and has a wooden prosthetic left arm crossed over his right hand. Beside him stands a single brown hen, and a large six-pointed star hangs in the sky nearby.]
[Image ID: The Wheel of Fortune. Two glowing yellow figures, featureless except for elven ears and faint suggestions of masculine and feminine torsos, pirouette around a round wooden door carved with the words 'I wish to enter The God and the God'. Behind the door is line art of a huge oak tree. Paper scrolls in each corner of the image show stylized representations of a gust of air, a drop of water, a new leaf, and a flame.]
[Image ID: Justice. An unsmiling half-orc man sits in a high-backed wooden chair. He wears simple country clothes and symbols of the sun. In his left hand he holds a set of golden scales, and his right holds aloft a golden morningstar. Two plain white pillars support a translucent yellow banner. Above him, the ethereal suggestion of a white dove flies.]
[Image ID: The Hanged Man. A dark-skinned eladrin man hangs upside down from a bare branch by one foot. His foot is secured by a length of purple silk. He seems relaxed with his arms behind his head. His light-blue hair hangs downward from a loose tie. He wears deep blue robes with a bronze seashell motif and has a huge silvery sword across his back. His left arm ends in a mess of purplish flesh at the shoulder, and only the bones continue below that.]
[Image ID: Death. A very dark-skinned woman in black plate armour rides on a white horse. A golden crown (matching the one worn by the Empress) sits on her long black hair, and a skull mask slips from her face. There is a silver greatsword on her back and a white rose enameled on her breastplate. In the foreground two elven peasants sit in attitudes of prayer, and in the foreground a silhouetted werewolf howls at the moon. There is a flute in the bottom left corner and a masque and dagger in the top right.]
[Image ID: Temperance. A drow woman with long auburn hair takes a step forward in the foreground, her eyes closed serenely. She wears long boots, a bustier and a blue shoulder cape, and the left side of her face and neck are marked by a glowing violet spellscar. Her arms are spread; her left hand holds a blue orb, while her open right hand is surrounded by a violet nimbus. A pair of silver chalices floats above her head, haloed by the same violet nimbus, and a stream of water pours from one to the other. Behind her, a cave opening descends down into darkness.]
[Image ID: The Devil. An uncomfortably muscular white man snarls, his lank hair falling over his shoulder. The right side of his body is taken over by demonic marks: his right eye is a fiery orange and surrounded by dark veins, there is a fang on the right side of his mouth, and a black and red horn has grown from his skull; the black stone axe he holds in his right hand has fused with his arm, a number of pulsating veins running from his flesh into the shaft of the axe. He holds a flaming torch in his human left hand. Behind him is a pentacle drawn in blood.]
[Image ID: The Tower. A reptilian monster based on the Tarrasque roars in the centre of the image, its back covered with orange bone spikes and its mouth full of terrible fangs. In the background a flash of white lightning forks from the sky. In the foreground a featureless man and woman lie in pools of blood.]
[Image ID: The Star. A young woman with a plain face, olive skin and a brown braid sits by a small pool, leaning on one hand. She wears modest robes that cover most of her skin except her face. Fiery energy surrounds her raised left hand; a hovering ceramic jug pours water into the pool, surrounded by the same fiery energy. Seven glowing stars hang in the sky around a larger, brighter star.]
[Image ID: The Moon. A violet-skinned mind flayer with glowing hooded eyes and a face full of tentacles contemplates a glowing moon suspended between its clawed hands. A pool of some dark substance ripples below it, with the shadowy outlines of six fleeing figures reflected in the middle. In the background is a gilded cage containing a collared white dove (similar to the one in the Justice card).]
[Image ID: The Sun. A young woman with powerful avian legs and a sky-blue crest of feathers on her scalp sits cross-legged in the sun. Her eyes are closed, her head tilted back and her left hand raised to the sun in the top-left corner. Her golden skin has a metallic sheen. She wears a short white robe over a light sleeveless coat with transparent crystal bracers. In the background three sunflowers wave, and where the fourth should be there is instead a golden staff topped by a sunburst with a glass prism at its centre.]
[Image ID: Judgement. A bald-headed genasi woman with rich brown skin marked with golden energy lines stands with her left hip tilted and her right hand raised questioningly. She wears fine clothing of red and turquoise silks finished with gold thread, and a bandolier of potions hangs from her belts. She has a black staff with a serpent's head slung over a shoulder. In the background a mountain split into two halves down the middle looms. In the foreground are two tombstones: one reads 'Sinner' while the other reads 'Loser'.]
[Image ID: The World. In the centre of the image a man in a black religious robe cowers, gazing fearfully at an unseen danger. His bald head is split by an angry red scar that runs from crown to chin, and a symbol of Demogorgon hangs from his belt. Twisting green tentacles form a rough circle around him. The word 'HA' is repeated in red several times across the background. The four corners are occupied by a demon each, one flying among clouds, one swimming with a fish tail, one perched on a rock, and one breathing fire.]
Current situation
This is what's happening and how I'm coping. On the left you see Fox in his grief (turtles are associated with grief for me). Under the wooden block is Lucas, who is hiding from everything. I'm sitting next to the little tiger, which is the attachment cry/scared part I keep feeling.
We try to use magic to make it all better. And all of the little shells are the ways we're coping: mono-tasking, 30 plant foods challenge, drawing, writing, reaching out to friends, exercizing, etc. These things we're doing stem from an overcontrol-perspective. (Lucas-style).
I need to get back to asking myself "What is the smallest way I can make this better?"
Because that's the only question that actually makes me feel a bit like I have any power or control to help the hurting parts. In this case it would be to pet the little tiger and let it snuggle up. And to turn the barricade Lucas has around him to only be a barrier (that he can see over if he wishes to).
IRL the smallest things are (1) having another snack, (2) planning my day for tomorrow, (3) turning our light to be a colour, (4) cuddling with our leopard.
If I were to yell at you right now, what would you do? Seeing as I don’t know you, I’d probably scream or cry lol. Do you empathize with people often? In all honesty, I’m not great with empathy. I honestly didn’t have many toys like that as a kid - my parents weren’t really into the whole plastic tat/toys thing. Do you have a collage of family pictures somewhere in your house? We do not.
How many wooden spoons are in your household? Zero.
Are you excited to go back to school? I finished education twelve years ago and have absolutely zero desire to ever, ever go back lol. Has anyone ever thrown a cup of liquid on you? Not on purpose, but it’s happened by accident before. Have you ever faked sick at school just to go home? Yeah, loads of times ha. Do you always watch something on tv on your home sick days? Ha, how old is this survey? Did you ever watch Beauty and the Geek? No. Do you enjoy cleaning? I wouldn’t say I enjoyed the process of it, but I love the feeling of being “done” and the house being clean and fresh and tidy. Have you read any of Ellen Hopkins’ books? No. They never really “made it” over here I don’t think. Do you even like to read? I do like reading but I’ve found that I don’t really have the attention span for it anymore. When I’m on holiday from work I do read a lot more. If your house was on fire, what would you save? Assuming all my pets were out and safe, then I’d grab my keys, my phone and my bank card. Yes. Have you ever changed a babies diaper? Nope. Did you have many baby dolls when you were little? I had two - one named Cathy and another named Rosie. Does the peanut butter or jelly make the sandwich? I’ve never had the combination of both together. I like just peanut butter alone. Have you ever kept a diary? Yeah, I did for a while as a teenager. Is there always a supply of KoolAid in your fridge? We don’t have KoolAid here. What is your favorite show on Nick At Nite? We don’t have that here either. Generally I’m not actually, but that wasn’t really a riddle lol. Trix or Cheerios? We don’t have Trix here but Cheerios are pretty good. Saying that, I’ve not bought any for years now.
Alessia Buchanan wasn’t a student anyone really knew. Sure she had friends and she wasn’t picked on, but she wasn’t the school’s best quarterback (Timothy Brown) or the head cheerleader (Thao Nguyen) or the kid who just won the national chess champion and put the school on the map (Avery Nakajima). But she had a distinct nickname. Anyone who knew her called her Turing, because she was good with computers. If something broke, she was the student the teachers called up to fix it.
She was towards the back of the crowd when the time capsule was dug up. It had been buried in 1919 by the graduating class of that year. She wasn’t graduating this year but the valedictorian for 2019, Aná Maria Santiago, for that year was the one who’d have the honors of opening that box.
The wooden box contained a total of ten things. The Newspaper for the day it was buried. The pocket watch of the principal for that year, his name was carved into it. A picture of the graduating class with a note of who everyone was. Three pictures which depicted the school’s pets at the time, two guinea pigs named Honey and Bee, a dog named Tucker, and a turtle named Speedy. A pin that was given to the graduating class. A Sear’s catalog. And finally, a letter.
Addressed to Alessia “Turing” Buchanan, class of 2021.
It was like she was Moses, as the crowd parted when her name was called.
She nervously approached the front where Aná Maria, Principal Nakajima, and a few of the teachers stood. She didn’t like everyone looking at her, but, Principal Nakajima handed her the note with a confused look.
“It’s, for you.” She said.
Alessia looked at the note in confusion, before looking up to see the whole school waiting for her to read it. She swallowed before opening it, then reading aloud.
“Alessia.
My name is Fredrick Kane. I know of you because I’ve seen you in my dreams. You’re 5’6”, brown hair, brown eyes, your father is African American, your mother an Italian immigrant.
You’re probably confused by this, but don’t worry. I’m not warning you of your death or of any danger really. In fact I know you’ll be reading this in front of the whole school. How little it’s grown!
I just wanted to say hi to you, and hi to the entire school. Also tell Mr. Jacobs his fly is down.”
Sure enough Mr. Jacobs turned red as he zipped his fly, mumbling something Alessia didn’t hear.
She didn’t read out the rest.
“Il resto è all'interno.
-Freddy”
Her mother taught her Italian. The rest is inside.
The school seemed amazed, amused and confused but, it all died down. Alessia was allowed to keep the letter.
When she got home, she went to her room and ripped the envelope to find more was written on the inside.
“The look on Mr. Jacobs’s face! Oh it was amazing. Alessia I really wrote this letter because you’re important, you’re meant for great things. Have you ever heard of the Reynolds Society? Answer aloud please.”
“No?” Alessia said before reading on.
“No? Damn, I’d have thought we’d become school myth! Well we’re a group of students within Harriville High with some odd abilities. I see the future. Alice Masters can read minds. Catherine and Ginger Wayne can move things with their minds, Anthony Jacobs and his daughter June are immortal. Mr Jacobs started the whole thing with his friend Samantha Reynolds back in 1872! He was 37 at the time, June was my age in 1919, I know she’s still around in your time.
“Point is, you’ve got some really powerful psychic abilities, stronger than any in your current version of the club, I’m surprised Mr. Jacobs didn’t invite you already! Hell if I didn’t write this you probably would have graduated without ever knowing!
“Just go down to the school basement tomorrow night after school. Mr. Jacobs, June, and quite a few new friends’ll be waiting for you, Mr. J may have a terrible fashion sense but he’s smart, he knows what the letter means.
When you meet Zachary Price, tell him great grandpa said hello and that I’m very proud of him.
-Freddy”
Alessia frowned in confusion at the letter, but, what harm could it do to go?
Your school digs up the time capsule from 100 years ago. Inside is a letter addressed to you.
I had a dream where I found myself entering a long hall lined with monitors. It was like entering the hall of a theme park ride where they set you up before the ride. I walk down the hall looking at each monitor. Each screen showed pictures of a fanciful universe filled with stars and planets. I reach the end of the hall and find a little creature that is a mix between a Dutch rabbit and a sea bunny. It was so cute as it started to hop after me and into the new world to explore.
I was in a space station where there were many people who were eager to explore the universe and all its wonders. I and my bunny companion manage to weave in and out of the crowd to the counter to see where I can go. I am directed to a small spaceship that seats only one and I put my space bunny on my lap and take to the stars.
The wonders I’ve seen are numerous and glorious. I flew past a comet up close, practically riding its tail for eons. I saw a supernova up close, the end of a star but the beginning of much more. I discovered a new star and named it after my favorite flower. I floated lazily through an asteroid field while enjoying a nice snack with my bunny friend.
I would visit planets too. Planets that are mostly water were good for diving. I visited the many creatures under the waves. I went to a planet whose foliage and beats were like something from my favorite video games. I witnessed a volcano erupt spewing blue lava so hot. I skied on pink snow near a lodge that served the best hot cocoa. My bunny friend would be in my side bag, enjoying the sights and sounds during those times.
The adventures I took were a thrill. I rescued a fleet in the midst of a meteor storm. I stopped a rouge robot from kidnapping a child. I fought space pirates and stole their treasure, returning it to the original owners. I traversed the deepest reaches of space to discover plants that can be used to create new cures. My little bunny can’t fight. He was just moral support.
The best thing was the people I met. The myriads of different personalities and races I met made the universe less lonely. From the quiet yet stoic to the loud and silly. From normal humans to alien lizard-folk. I raced with some speedsters and flew with great aces. I swam with a researcher looking for new marine life. I helped a spry young turtle-boy find his new goal in life. I even explored a terrifying crypt to help a somber spider-woman who was searching for her sister. But none stayed by my side like my little space bunny.
I felt like I lived forever exploring every inch of the universe. I took photos of a lifetime's worth of memories. I shared my meals with my bunny friend and shared selfies too. We drifted through space for a time. Suddenly I saw the space station where my adventure started. I decided to go back and check it out.
I entered an empty space station void of life. Not a single moving body besides me and my bunny. I wandered past the main hall where there were screens full of the very pictures I took of my life here in this universe. I eventually found my way to the hallway where I started. The lights were off and the rows of screens were too. At the other end of the hall, I see the ornate wooden door I first pass through. I step quietly toward the door when I notice that my bunny is no longer following. I turn to see him at the other end of the hall just watching me. I knew deep down, this is it. My journey here is at an end and my friend can no longer follow me. This is goodbye. I felt an overwhelming mix of sadness, joy, and loneliness as I went back and kneeled down to give my longtime friend a final grateful hug. As I pet his head, I truly feel how soft and warm they are. Without a word, I stand up and wave and walk slowly to the door. I look back one last time to see my bunny watching me. I reach for the door handle open to a darkness that felt oddly warm and comforting. My final thought was that despite the fun and wonderous adventure I had, sooner or later I have to wake up. For some reason though that thought was not a sad one.
