COLLAGE ON VIEW

Even though we live in an age of advanced technology and AI, all the artists featured in this exhibition cut paper and use glue to make their artwork. Read More

Kolaj Magazine, a full color, print magazine, exists to show how the world of collage is rich, layered, and thick with complexity. By remixing history and culture, collage artists forge new thinking. To understand collage is to reshape one's thinking of art history and redefine the canon of visual culture that informs the present.

Anthony’s Stupid Daily Blog (1051): Tue 4th Feb 2025
Up early for a tattoo this morning at a new place called Illuminaughty. I stopped drinking twelve years ago this month and I decided to get a tattoo of a bottle of whiskey dressed as the devil on my wrist because the temperance movement referred to alcohol as the “Demon Drink”. Originally I was just going to get 9/2/13 tattooed on me but then I worried about being 89 years old and riddled with Alzheimer’s, looking down at the tattoo and thinking that I’ve time travelled to a Nazi concentration camp. I told them I wanted it quite small as I’ve got plans for other designs further up the arm. When I got there however the design the lass showed me was quite big and I was worried there wouldn’t be any room for the other ones down the line. She said it needed to be that big because the red eyes would become blurry if she did it any smaller. Thankfully I told her I didn’t care about the eyes and she could just do them as little black dots if that meant it could be smaller which she agreed to. The LA Lakers tattoo I got on my other wrist was easily the most painful one I’ve ever had done so I was expecting this one to be similarly painful but it was surprisingly pain free. Maybe at some point prior to going to TripleSix I upset the tattoo artist who’s done my tattoos there and she remembered me and she was deliberately needling me extra hard. While I was getting worked on three men who I can only described as yobs walked in (I could genuinely picture these taking part in the Sunderland riots last year) and one of them asked if he could get a tattoo done immediately. The receptionist apologised and said they only had one tattooist in today and she was going to be busy with me for the next few hours. The main yob asked if they could get it started today but again the receptionist declined and offered to book him in for next week. However this man was insistent that he had to get it started today but again he was told that it would not be possible to start today. Before leaving the bloke said to the receptionist “I’ve got a thousand pounds in my pocket if you can start right away” but was declined for a final time. I’ll be honest I was worried they were going to kick me out. If I was a tattoo artist doing a little doodle on someone and another customer walked in and offered me a grand for a couple of hours work I would’ve chucked the first guy out with a felt tip pen and told them to finish it themselves. I wonder why this guy was so keep for this tattoo to be done immediately. Maybe he had a Nazi tattoo of some sort and was being investigated by the police to needed it covering up as soon as possible. I like the idea that he had a tattoo of Hitler giving the Nazi salute and he wanted to extend the moustache, put some glasses in him and put a paddle in his hand so that it resembled the Bargain Hunt presenter Tim Wonnacott. After almost two hours the job was finally done and I was thrilled with the result. I decided to give up alcohol twelve years ago and it’s the best thing I ever did. I started drinking because the loneliness and isolation was starting to depress me and whenever I would drink I was able to be more open and communicative with people. However after a while I grew to hate the wanker I’d turn into whenever I’d get drunk so then I’d drink even more so that I didn’t know what I was doing during my drunken escapades. In 2013 I realised this was no way to live and so decided to get my kicks through hobbies, travel and goals and knock the booze in the head forever. I’ll be completely honest I didn’t think I’d be able to last a week much less over a decade. I am the least disciplined person in the word as you’ll know doubt know from the thousands of blogs I’ve written that have started with “My new diet starts today…”. However my teetotalism is the one thing in my life that I have been able to exercise incredible discipline towards so I guess that’s something and now I have a little reminder in my wrist of the great things I can do when I just try and apply myself:

A very fun trip to Fort George this summer to see the 1812 reenactment. As I get older the camp life stuff and work in the kitchen becomes a lot more interesting than just the drill and soldiering (still fun). Met lots of great people and learned a lot of cool stuff.
