"The woman, carved in pale stone, wears a peaked headdress, circular earrings and the wide hip belt and kneepads of an ancient Mesoamerican athlete. Her expression is fierce, her pose triumphant. In her right hand, she grips the severed head of a sacrificial victim by the hair.
The sculpture is the first life-size representation of a ritual ballplayer found to date in the Huasteca, a tropical region spanning parts of several states along the Gulf Coast of Mexico.
Like virtually every other Mesoamerican society, the inhabitants of the Huasteca played what is simply known today as “the ballgame,” in the time before the Spanish conquest. Despite its name and ties to modern soccer, this game was more sacred rite than sport.
For the players, who bounce a solid, dangerously heavy rubber ball off their hips, it was a means of communing with the gods, one that sometimes culminated in human sacrifice.
The ballplayer will be among the most important artifacts in an exhibit, “Ancient Huasteca Women: Goddesses, Warriors and Governors,” at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, opening Friday. This is the first time the piece, which was discovered by landowners about 50 years ago near Álamo, Veracruz, has been on public display.
“It is a totally atypical sculpture,” said David Antonio Morales, an archaeologist with the National Institute of Anthropology and History in Veracruz, who stumbled upon it last November when he was visiting private collections.
He contacted María Eugenia Maldonado, one of the few archaeologists specializing in the pre-Columbian past of the Huasteca. At first, she didn’t think the figure could be real. It would be the first stone sculpture of a ballplayer found in the region, the first female ballplayer and the first at this scale holding a decapitated head.
“It’s putting all the elements into a single sculpture that had never been seen together before,” she said. “That is the importance of this sculpture.”
Kim N. Richter, a historian of pre-Columbian art at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles and an expert on female statues from the region, had not seen the piece. It “would be really important because we don’t have any monumental sculptures of ballplayers in the Huasteca to date, male or female,” she said. “So that would be a huge discovery in itself.”
Dr. Maldonado says she hopes the exhibition, with 100 artifacts, will challenge what she calls “superficial” interpretations of women’s roles that have riddled scholarship of the region. For decades, archaeologists have described sculptures of men as individuals in positions of power, like priests or rulers. They’ve tended to brush aside sculptures of women as images of a fertility goddess.""

Nike and Corinthians launch third kit inspired by women's football and with an anti-racist message.
The campaign is the same as the first and second kits, but this time it is even more incisive in the fight and glories of the black women who have worn and still wear the club's colors.
As the main model we have Grazi, the most successful player (among men and women) in the history of Sport Club Corinthians Paulista and who was the protagonist in a game valid for the Copa Libertadores da America in 2021. During the match against Nacional, some players on the Uruguayan team made racist comments and attitudes towards Adriana (who now plays for Orlando Pride), causing outrage among all the players and coaching staff of the Brazilian team. At the end of the match, Grazi scored a goal and celebrated with her fist raised, starring one of the most iconic and remembered photos of the club.
Despite now being retired from the pitch, Grazi continues her story at Corinthians as a member of the coaching staff and participating in campaigns like this one, which are much more than special in raising awareness among athletes, society and those who are victims of discrimination.
Also notable is the difference in Nike's vertical swoosh. This is present on several of the brand's third kits and represents the fast evolution and rise of women's football.

On Birdo's Gender
Heads up this post will quote manuals and website descriptions and by no means supports the messed up language in it. It was wrong then and it is wrong now, this post is purely for educational purposes. Also, this is meant to be a useful tool to use against people who try to use this Pink Dinosaur to be losers all while clearing up any actual confusion.
So... appearing first in Super Mario Bros. 2 USA, Birdo first gets the following description in the manual. "He thinks he is a girl and he spits eggs from his mouth. He'd rather be called 'Birdetta.'" But it is a bit different in the Japanese version than in the localization. "Katherine, thinks they are a girl and spits eggs from their mouth. Calling them Kathy puts them in a good mood." So while the Japanese manual isn't as bad it is still not great. The reason for this Japan isn't the kindest to trans people. Many people themselves in Japan will use pejoratives to refer trans people, mislabel them, make "jokes" at their expense, and yes misgender them. Look no further than that one Metroid developer interview where a developer called Samus Aran a newhalf as a "joke." This information provides some context on why Birdo is treated the way she is not just in the West but in Japan itself. Btw as a side note on this idea of "jokes' this also might be the reason the Mario series uses Luigi wearing Peach's dress as a joke so often. To the point they made this description for Luigi which can be interpreted as implying some things about Luigi. "When Toadette finds one of these, she can transform into the super-powered Peachette. (Sorry Luigi-only Toadette can use this item!)" Note, the Luigi thing is a maybe and not guaranteed, this is just speculation. That aside, let's move on.
Shows up in a Japanese commercial where she has a deeper voice, which is points to the obvious fact that she is intended to be trans. Side note, trans women can have both deep and high pitched voices, and thus this depiction of Birdo can go either way here.
Next up is a description of from the Double Dash Japanese Website. 「ヨッシーの彼女に見えて実は彼氏!?」 "Birdo appears to be Yoshi's girlfriend, but is actually his boyfriend!?" This is some more of that yikes moments when it comes to Birdo and how they are treated.
In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga Popple appears to almost misgender Birdo but ends up not doing so. This seems to be a decent depiction of her. Now some people believe she is being deadnamed, here, however Birdie seems to be just a pet name she likes being called.
So at this point people on this topic typically bring but the next thing and call it a day, but I have more here to bring up. So some people bring up Birdo's Brawl description, but it is irrelevant to this topic because Smash Bros. is not canon.
Next up Birdo's BS Super Mario USA depiction. As mentioned in a previous post, Birdo has sisters. This also makes some decent treatment of her and her sisters. In addition the Super Birdos are voiced by Jun Donna, Rika and Akemi which are all trans women if I am correct. If I made a mistake at all here let me know. In addition they all have deep voices. See the video BSスーパーマリオUSA パワーチャレンジ 第1回 from the channel kukun kun.
Now Birdo in Paper Mario: Sticker Star Birdo sings a song. “Heart of a woman, heart of a man… Both can know of love's grace…” This one is a bit iffy, it might be intended to be something intended to be used to mistreat Birdo, or it might not be and is just meant to refer to her being trans. Side note, in Paper Mario: Color Splash Birdo sings a song that references Doki Doki Panic and her relationship with Yoshi. In addition her being a performer in this game is a follow-up to what she said she would do in Superstar Saga.
Next up is Birdo's descriptions in various games. Games like Super Mario RPG, Mario Superstar Baseball, Mario Tennis, Mario Kart Double Dash, and Mario Party 9 all use the correct pronouns for Birdo. Now I've heard it claimed Super Mario Party does the same but I don't have access to it, and it is also claimed in the UK version it misgenders her. It also has been claimed that in the Japanese versions she is also misgendered but again I don't have access to those to check them. But even if the Japanese did say that, it would be better to abide by the US localization's usage of Birdo's pronoun since she is intended to be a trans woman.
Finally in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Birdo is featured on the sponsor Women Of Racing Organization thus acknowledged her as what she is. In addition the Sunshine Airport Intercom refers to her by the correct pronouns as well. Source: Sunshine Airport Intercom Voices in 4 different voice overs! [MARIO KART 8 DELUXE]
Now on Birdo spitting out eggs alongside the rest of her species doing the same. It is never stated anywhere whether or not the Birdos have sexes, and they obviously don't have any spectrum sexual dimorphism as most Mario characters don't So it is probably safe to say Birdos either are sexless, or if they do have a sex then like Yoshies all Birdos can make eggs.

A hat trick of Olympic gold medals in the 1500m in three straight Olympics, that’s history people. Remember the name. As a former distance runner, nothing but respect. I got pumped when I hit 4:58 in high school for our boys team. It’s not even close to what she’s done at 30 after giving birth. 🙌🏾

Do you follow football and still don't know how mystical this sport is? Then let me explain it to you with just one example.
Two years ago, playing in the Copa Libertadores da América, the Corinthians defender and former Brazilian national team striker (yes, you read that right, former striker), Érika had already started the competition with an injury, but ended up tearing her ACL in a game played in Paraguay, the same venue as this year's Women's Libertadores.
She spent almost two years off the pitch after encountering several problems in her recovery and made her return to the team at the beginning of this year, becoming a symbol of resistance. Érika is already 36 years old, and has had a very successful career wherever she has been, from Santos, PSG, and especially at her current home, Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, where she is carried by the fans with idolatry. She could have ended her career there in 2022, or after the complications of her surgery, but Érika persisted.
Today, on 10/19 (interestingly, the date forms the year the club was founded, 1910) she scored the goal that sealed Corinthians' victory and the historic and never-to-be-repeated feat in this competition, winning five editions of the Copa Libertadores. All this in the same place that gave her nightmares a few years ago, that filled her head with uncertainty and negative thoughts.
Football is pure magic, it is cruel, but it knows how to repair the damage it has caused to those who have always treated the ball and the sport with due respect.
