I then proceeded to write a comic about a disabled female ace Indian war vet with ptsd, an ambiguously gendered ace plant guy (who’s just blatantly black. Like homeboy may be green but he has MELANIN. He has dreads. I wasn’t being subtle there) with a rough relationship with his family because they were (a thinly veiled metaphor for Evangelical culture) ultra-religious, a disabled mid-twenties man who was recovering from being sexually trafficked as a child and working through his own faith, and an East-Asian girl with anxiety and anger issues fresh off the American foster system. I was twelve-fourteen (memory is wobbly) when I unironically went “hm. I think the lack of representation and understanding when it comes to men also being victims of assault is a serious problem, one that could be addressed by allowing more narratives where victims of this system include men.” And then Wrote It??? When I was Twelve? ??? I put them in caves underground and made them magic, so nobody looked sideways but my parents, and it took them like four years to notice. They noticed me drawing disabled buff women and were like “hey I know we taught you everyone is beautiful and scars don’t make you less pretty but Not Like That kiddo-“ but it was too late. I had internalized it as a Rule. And as we all know, autistic kids’ Rules are immutable facts of reality. Nothing can be done to stop them. I went back a year or two ago to look at that old comic and it Slaps. I’m rewriting it now.

(Side note someone should ask me about the conversation I had in high school about how Odysseus was actually totally at fault for staying so long on calypso’s island because it’s ‘impossible for men to be assaulted’ I think recounting that conversation would make me Feel Something. The something would be fury but like. It’s better than nothing.)

the thing is like. i actually think it is important to have narratives about elder abuse and general domestic abuse against disabled people within the home HOWEVER like. it seems like the body of work about it only explores women abusing male elders and/or their abusers

so it's all this thing of like. a younger and marginalised family member, especially a woman but not always, is abusing an elder and/or someone who's become disabled bc they now have power over them in the domestic sphere they never did before

in boardwalk empire, one of the female characters who was living w this elder male char, now that he's had a stroke and is going to be permanently disabled, basically drops the bombshell that he raped her, perhaps repeatedly, when they met

and she says this to him, goes, "do you remember that?" while he's powerless to respond, and then she fucking WAILS on him, like properly does these big ringing slaps across his face

rent-a-pal, the main dude was obviously abused horribly by his mother, so he screams at and abuses her and again, it's like. it's retribution, right, for the abuse when he was young? now he has the power, now he can hit her back

but like. idk this thing of showing brutal abuse of elders comes up repeatedly in quite conservative media bc it's about revenge, firstly, but also like. it then portrays that abuser in the most sympathetic light, bc they're punished once they're completely powerless

and often when they're insensible or in diminished mental capacity, such that they don't even necessarily remember or meaningfully comprehend the abuses they carried out in the past

and realistically like. this sort of violent domestic abuse is far more likely carried out against the most vulnerable members of the family in the first place, for their whole fucking lives

idk something about it sits poorly with me, i think just like. the relative invisibility of this sort of abuse on television, and the fact that like. many ppl don't give a shit about elder abuse and domestic abuse of disabled ppl in the first place

also, I personally haven't been in an online environment characterized by petty 'yfip-style' nitpicking since I've reached my late 20s and started following mainly people in my age group. I follow a lot of haters, I am a hater, I always value meaningful critique, some stories ARE worth dropping entirely, but that kind of juvenile callout posting you describe is simply dependent on the users you follow and I do not think it will happen for me for this manga. sometimes i wish i was just born with the disabilities i have now. like, im sure that i was already disabled to an extent (most teenagers don't get sick once a month for a year i dont think) but it's like

when ppl say ur one accident away from houselessness or disability they're right. cause after my first car accident i was mostly "fine" (fine enough to walk home instead of taking the ambulance cause i was scared of the cost). i was lucky that i ended up working from home for that year coincidentally enough. credit score? shot. finances? shot. but i could still "function" mostly.

then there was my second car accident. being the passenger, that quote about passengers getting the bulk of injury? yeah. couldnt walk, couldnt stand, could barely breathe. but i did it. did my at home exercises and learned how to mostly do things again. like yeah my back hurts more often than not, and i cant stand for as long as i used to, and there are these weird pains all over my torso sometimes, but im "fine."

then that fucking ladder months after my second accident. if those two didnt take me out, the ladder sealed the deal. barely able to do anything by lie down and stretch my muscles as needed. constantly on painkillers just to go to exist. and after months of physical therapy (i had to go to myself because it wasn't "far enough" to be covered, which included a minimum of an hour walk and occasionally more) im deemed good enough to go back to work for one hundred percent care. yay me.

im "totally" healed, right? buuuuut i just gotta do these back exercises every day for the rest of my life to stand and oh yeah, im at risk of scoliosis now. im "good as new," right? yeah for sure, i just need to take some form of painkiller on occasion because all the places that "used" to hurt (they never really stopped hurting) will have flair ups and, oh would you look at that, i cant walk today. i cant stand today. i cant breathe today.

im so tired. jobs dont take me seriously cause im not legally registered as disabled. but if i even put on the application or mention that ive at the minimum history of disability, they ask me if i can "handle" the job. they send me emails saying they "filled the position." so since im not "really" disabled they can just basically give me bullshit. and i would register, and i wanna register so bad! i want a prescription for a wheelchair, to get a proper crutch, or crutches when both my knees arent being agreeable. i wanna be able to sit in the fucking disability spot on the bus without people staring at me to get up just because someone with a visible disability came in or an elderly person walked on.

im tired of having to pretend that im not in constant fucking pain because im so young. young people arent disabled. black women arent disabled.

but its also so scary. to prove disability is one of the most frightening and dehumanizing processes ive heard of. even when i was doing the claim after i fell off the fucking ladder did prove to be a hassle. and that was in my favor. the fact that ive been working is definitely not gonna help the situation. "if disabled, why work? 🤔"

theres also the savings cap. i have trips i wanna go to, places i wanna be. having a savings cap on being a recipient of disability is actually asinine. theyre pushing to raise and it and GOD i hope that bill goes through.

they basically fuck you over if you're married so there goes my aspirations of partnering ig. countries that wont let you cause ur disabled. countries that wont let you immigrate because of disability. its all so much.

to me that seems silly bc lots of athletes are wonderful players/athletes while being very active politically. an easy example is basically the entire wnba lol, especially when you consider so many of the wnba players are Black women & nb ppl who spent 2020 & 2021 being extremely active & outspoken; still undoubtedly the best players in the world. on the uswnt, cp is not as abrasively (not in a bad way, just stylistically lol) outspoken or active as pinoe, but thru re-inc & just her personal politic it’s very clear where she stands. there are ofc lots of other examples but those are top of mind for me.

on the flip side, players like kelley didn’t play well at all & are politically … on the wrong side of things, to put it mildly. so in my mind that performance, while i love to believe in the ramifications of energy lol, also has rly nothing to do with her beliefs & expression of them.

beyond that, everything is political. existing “apolitically” or “just being an athlete” is also a political stance, usually rooted in blatant anti-Blackness (which of course stems out into anti-fat, anti-disabled, anti-poor, etc politic)

i do think some of the poor play is probably just age & preparation, & also, tbh, a lack of tactics for YEARS. cp has excelled so much bc she’s always been a tactical player — she’s incredibly fast & smart off the ball, very skilled in tight, quick spaces: she reads the game well & reacts accordingly. pinoe has been playing a pretty typical uswnt style for a decade — e.g., out-muscle the other team, run faster, etc. tbh even in 2019 wc lots of goals she scored were set pieces/penalties, not in the run of play. i think she should have retired.

i’d decide on like heights and builds to Stick With and draw them looking the same way mostly lol. galo as relatively muscular like hes drawn in official art but like 5′8 maybe (thats what he is in my head) compared to lios canon 5′2 (short kings need rep <3). and aina is taller than galo in my head at like 5′10 to 6 ft smth so i think thats a good idea :) the women r typically drawn w less extreme shoulder to waist ratios than galo and lio which i find funny and kinda transgender so id keep that in lol

and give them organs. like i know its stylization but can we get some fat on these people

There’s nothing feminist or empowering in Peggy director of Shield, unless we go the “Tatcher had girl power” route. It’s also throwing the entirety of CATWS in the garbage flute because the whole point of the movie was in Fury - the current person in Peggy’s former role - realizing the error in his ways and taking a step back, in fact making a crucial contribution to tear Shield down (funnily enough, the MCU decided to ignore the plot of the movie afterwards). Fury burned the symbols of his role, he rejected it because, thanks to Steve’s push and the unveiling of dark depths he was unable to see (which was his responsibility as the boss to notice - the same goes for Peggy. The director of Shield carries the responsibility of not noticing Hydra in their midst, you know?), he finally saw the right way (symbolically, his blind eye was the one that could fix what he couldn’t “see” i.e. the true nature of the system).

I was feeling like trash yesterday and wanted to watch a garbage tv show so I ended up watching love is blind, a reality tv show abt ppl falling in love without seeing each other, and I cannot stop thinking about it

for all that this show is extremely heterosexual (there’s a “girls side” and a “boys side” and they date each other by going into pods and talking to each) it’s actually also incredibly gay?? Hear me out. It’s about people talking to each other, forming relationships on personality instead of sexual attraction. A lot of contemporary “straightness” comes with compulsory physical attraction (allonormativity) and this attempts to circumnavigate that to build a relationship in a different way (i.e. the way a demisexual/ace person would)

but also every time they call it an experiment i have to laugh. where is your control group? where’s your background research on this? lmfao there’s one guy who’s a “scientist” and he’s like “i have to see this experiment out”. at best this is a “case study” but let’s be fucking real it’s reality tv and the drama! is! manufactured!

i am so angry. i went to this social justice meetup yesterday & i really wanted to like it & i was honestly so insightful & provided so much to the discussion. i brought up how mental illness & disability are neglected in a lot of social justice activism & people agreed. but then the white people had the GALL to call me amoral & selfish for having an eating disorder & that i’m being an individualistic choice activist. how fucking dare these white people.

so the meetup included a v*gan potluck. ok, cool! i can bring japchae! everyone loves japchae! i get there & i notice that the center seems to be in a predominately black neighborhood. nice! i go in & notice the majority of people are white & none of the poc there are black. o....k. well. maybe a coincidence?

so we start off by watching an anarchist feminist documentary. pretty good. there was a planned discussion afterwards. this white woman keeps talking to another white woman about a previous v*ganism advocacy meeting. i try to interject & talk about the movie but they ignore me. i wait for them to finish but tap my feet in obvious impatience bc what they’re talking about has nothing to do with the movie. a woman of color finally speaks up & asks them to stop talking about that & let us talk about the movie. (i give her the Thanks for Backing me Up in Front of these White People women of color glance lol)

so i start talking a lot about anti-capitalism & the inherent flaws in western mental health discourse & how that supports reconciliation to the prevailing system rather than challenging it. (everyone laughs when i say “honestly YOU’RE the one who’s crazy if you’ve never been depressed in this inherently dehumanizing world!”) i talk about how mental illness & disability are neglected in a lot of social justice activism. they all agree. i even come out to them about being a lesbian. everyone’s cool w that. so far, so good, right?

well, the aforementioned white woman & a white man start talking about animal rights. ok, good, also important. they start talking about how their main focus in activism is v*ganism. alright. literally have no problems w people being v*gan. but then they start preaching about how you need to be v*gan if you actually support all lives otherwise you’re amoral & support the suffering & death of animals. um. i say that i respect animal rights & their views. i tell them that i do have an eating disorder & that preaching about moral purity in any kind of diet really fuels it & that i wish they would be more sensitive to eating disorders in their v*ganism rhetoric. the white woman says that i’m being amoral & selfish for thinking only about myself & that if i was an actually good person, i would be v*gan. another white woman says that she has an eating disorder but that i’m being individualistic & that i’m killing lives for my own selfishness & that eating disorders are not an excuse to be amoral.

no one speaks up for me, not even the poc. i start zoning out. i start trying to self harm. i’m obviously hurt. i get up & stand in the corner, unsure of what to do. a man of color comes up to me & i briefly have hope he’s gonna ask if i feel comfortable. he just asks if i need to put my cup away & that he’s glad i came to the meeting. i just leave after that.

i come home & start obsessing that i am really a horrible person & that i should stop eating, period. 

i never once disrespected v*ganism. they did not give me the same courtesy to respect me & where i’m coming from. not the first fucking time white people have shamed women of color for their politics not being pure enough for them while theirs is the most individualistic, vapid shit ever. how the HELL does shaming mentally ill women of color for eating meat SAVING ANIMALS? i don’t hear them talking about how to take down the meat industry (which i even agree is evil!). i don’t hear them talking about food deserts or food insecurity. i don’t hear them talk about we shouldn’t use phones & computers bc making those harm the environment & thus animals. i don’t hear them talking about how white animal rights activists have blocked indigenous people in canada from hunting seals. i don’t hear them talking about how to help exploited mexican migrant workers who pick our produce. i don’t hear them talking about unsustainable farming in the US & environmental pollution & climate change, ALL HARMING ANIMALS. all they talk about is not eating meat & how that’s going to save all the animals & i’m amoral & selfish for having an eating disorder & thus not wanting to hear them connect moral purity to eating. yeah, they’re the moral, selfless, most dedicated activists ONLY FOR NOT EATING MEAT, not even doing other animal rights activism, but oh yeah, women of color with eating disorders can just fuck right off, huh.

The DNC has consistently disregarded and worked against leftist politics, even the most mild leftist politicians, and has been taken further and further right each year. Our two party system is one between two different flavors of fascist. This “mess” was bound to happen. As for my stance on not worth voting: sure, it might be and it might not be. I voted for Clinton in 2016 even though I hated her. That was the year they said we would talk about compromise in the future. That never came. This “mess” is because of do-nothing centrists watching the rise of fascism and thinking they can work across the aisle.

To say no makes me look like I’m talking out of my ass. To say yes is to argue that because i know Black people who agree with me I must be right. I’m not engaging in that sort of tactic. The fetishization and tokenization of marginalized people in this line and the one before it are so central to the liberal argument that you end up creating an imaginary monolithic marginalized group who either agrees with you or disagrees–meaning they are ill informed or malicious for pointing out the issues in your line of thinking. This isn’t the case. Almost all the people I know who are not voting are BIPOC, trans, lesbian or gay, disabled or rape victims, or multiple of these. Your imaginary idea of the marginalized is based on your own belief that you know what’s best.

biden might not be any deviation in terms of treatment for black people in this country and if that were the only factor then yeah I wouldn't vote for him either. I get that logic.

but black people aren't the only demographic of people who are mistreated in america. they may be treated the worst out of every single conceivable demographic of people, but that doesn't negate the fact that there are nonblack jews/muslims, disabled/neurodivergent, queer, trans, homeless/impoverished, immigrants & indigenous ppl, women, etc, who go through hardships because of trump that might not happen under biden. I'm not gonna throw out the baby with the bathwater. it's not that I hate black people, it's that I also care about others.

there is roughly a 13% black population in the united states. that's high. real high. but out of the 87% left over, is it really feasible to say that less than 38% are negatively impacted by the woeful incompetence of the administration that caused all the fires, and covid, and raised the carbon emissions, & did countless irreparable damage to the population and environment?

yes it sucks for black people. but there's nothing that can be done for that when it comes to voting. it is no longer a factor that can be considered in a dual result system. alternative solutions have to be found to aid the plight of black people in america beyond just voting- actual radical action needs to be taken. you can't just fill in a dot at a polling booth and then dust off your hands and pat yourself on the back and give yourself a gold star before going home and watching rupaul and listening to jimi hendrix, congratulating yourself for a job well done and getting your non-racist points quota for the year. racism is deeper and more insidious than can be fixed with simple polls.

but for everything else, I feel like biden's leftist administration is the best chance that nonblack minorities have for potentially moving forward, and that's why I'm voting for him. even though I'm not a muslim and I can walk and I have a home, for example, I can look outside myself and what directly impacts only me and think about what's best for the overall population at large. there's a significant fraction of 87% of what's left that shouldn't be just left out in the cold because no benefit can be had by the other 13%. so even if biden may not help black people, that isn't the ONLY factor i consider. politics is more complicated than any 1 issue.

besides, the concentration camps are still a thing and that's the single most important thing to me right now. america cannot keep making internment camps for ethnic minorities and tearing families apart and selling brown babies on the black market and getting away with it with barely a slap on the wrist. I'm voting biden because his administration will replace all of the corruption and the morons and the bigots who have their thumbs in every pie right now. even if black peoples claim he won't help them, well, it's not like things can get any worse than the literal military shooting them like will 100% happen if trump secures another nomination.
