Japanese Ruikasa AU's: A Comprehensive (?) Guide

There are a lot of Rui/Tsukasa AU’s 類司 (派生/derivation or パロ/parody, or both sometimes) in the Japanese fandom, this is a showcase of almost all of them.

A note that the order of names in the ship matters a LOT in fandom spaces in the eastern side, you’ll often, if not always, find artists’ socials with 🎈🌟左右固定 or 🎈🌟🔄❌ in their bio or in their profile cards. All will be in Rui/Tsukasa order here. Listed in romanized alphabetical order.

Rui and Tsukasa need no introduction if you are already familiar with this game, but if you aren't, Rui and Tsukasa are characters from the rhythm game Project Sekai: Colorful Stage ft. Hatsune Miku (Brand New Your World). They’re from the Unit WonderlandsxShowtime, members of a freelance theater troupe with the goal of bringing smiles to the entire world with their performances. They’re also classmates and are often referred to by their classmates as the “Oddball 1, 2 Finish” (or “Weirdo Wombo Combo” as the official English localization goes) because they are a pair of show-passionate weirdos. They’ve also blown up a few things at their school more than once but that’s another story! We continue with the actual AU's!

In the event's play, Danchou (Rui) is a Band Leader (translation of Danchou) from an orchestra who saw potential in Torpe (Tsukasa), a pianist that had issues showcasing his piano skills in front of others.

From Rui and Tsukasa's characters on Petit SEKAI #2 "Fight! Neneger V". Rui plays as Ruidouji Hakase (類道寺博士・Professor Ruidouji) and Tsukasa plays as Pegasus The Shining (ペガサス・ザ・シャイニング). Despite its silly beginnings, most works I've seen regarding this AU are filled with angst.

From Rui's trained gacha card and Tsukasa's shop card in Emu's focus event Amidst a Dream, Towards the Shining Stars. Their names come from the famous fanon interpretations about the characters they're representing from "Peter Pan" in their trained cards.

One of the original AU's that I still see sometimes. Both of these come from outfits, Rui comes from April 2021 Mission Pass Men's Outfit titled “Elegant Pirates” and Tsukasa comes from 2021 Half-Anniversary Limited Outfit titled “Hummingbird”.

怪盗・ロミオ Kaitou/Romeo・Phantom Thief/Romeo

Another OG. Rui comes from a July 2021 Mission Pass Men's Outfit titled “Phantom Thief” and Tsukasa comes from his trained gacha card I'm the Leading Actor! from Mizuki's focus event KAMIKOU FESTIVAL!. He's called ‘Romeo’ because he plays the role of Romeo in a Romeo and Juliet inspired battle royale play. I've seen it called PhantomRomi on the western side like. once.

Can also just be called ケモ (Kemo). From Rui and Tsukasa's shop cards in Shiho's focus event Resounding Twilight Parade.

Sometimes called 魔法学校 (Mahou Gakou) Magic School. Both come from 2023 2.5 Anniversary Limited Outfit titled “Magic Academy of Sekai”.

にこやかな悪魔・エリート悪魔 Nikoyaka na Akuma/Elite Akuma・Smiling Devil/Elite Devil

This is very specific. The names come from the characters Rui and Tsukasa play in their performance in At This Festival Tinged With Twilight's event. Rui plays the "Smiling Devil" and Tsukasa plays the "Elite Devil". Rui here is using the March 2023 Mission Pass Men's Outfit titled "Devil move heart" and Tsukasa uses November 2021 Mission Pass Men's Outfit titled “EVIL ONE” because I've seen them represented with both outfits. Mostly “EVIL ONE”.

I'm using Rui and Tsukasa's trained gacha cards on Tsukasa's focus event A Story Where You Are The Star, since this AU came from there. In the event's play, Nakayama (Tsukasa) is interpreted as a cynical and spiteful editor, Shirafuji (Rui) just works at a bookstore.

I can't find the fanart that started it all, but this one by HIA portrays the most used fanon rendition of them.

- skwis' wombo combo of only believing she's worth anything if she's fucking or playing guitar and her lack of romantic experience and the fact that she's never really experienced love from anyone come to a head early on in their relationship

- she distances herself at first because shes so So nervous of the rest of the band finding out about her ocd/insecurities and leaving. the band knows all of this about her because they've lived together for the past Several Years. they love her regardless

- shes got absolutely no idea how to deal with romantic affection. she ends up crying a lot because its so weird to experience genuine love after she's spent most of her adult life convincing herself that she doesn't deserve it and most of her childhood being neglected emotionally.

ok i really quickly need to sidebar to talk about the KGs and Ninten because i talked a little bit about them around when i wrote the First masterpost and it's still so so funny to me bc the more i dig up about the different KGs the sillier it gets

bc like . okay. in the rp group that prime/ellis/self/heart/ride system originated in, my best friend at the time rp'd Ninten and i thought he was The Coolest.

so the Very First Appearance Of A KG happens, which is The Origins Of Ellis where the setting is, like, the Real World but then an alien apocalypse happens so everybody bands together and has to survive, and it crossed over with the wider rp continuity because the guy behind the invasion was a reoccurring character... who was friends with Ninten! and had gone evil! so Ninten showed up. and.. okay i need to . directly copy-paste The First Instance Of Ninten Showing Up from the fic version i wrote because:

"Ninten?"

The black-haired boy nodded. His striped shirt and neckerchief had given him away instantly. What was he doing here? Katie had a vague memory of the psychic getting arrested. He'd been acting oddly when it happened.

Ninten showing up is never explained in the fic. he's just.. there. and Ellis knows him. which knocked me out when i was re-reading the fic earlier this week

and then like, in the noncanon stuff, it was everybody's OCs and any canon characters they rp'd put in the same building and let wild, and that included Ninten and later-established-as-Prime KG! and also Ninten's son from the future, Artemis. and they heckled each other a lot and it was fun. Prime did a lot of heckling people. it's kind of their job. i still write Prime sometimes and their job is still Heckling People For Fun

(so like, in the current Explanation for why KG is Like That, Prime knew Ninten from the Noncanon Zone and that's why Ellis would've recognized him. because shared memories. yea)

i am now grabbing Artemis with force. Artemis was also written by my best friend and he was, like, a Cool Guy that did dark magic and liked Castlevania and whatever. and Artemis ended up being part of the big Heartless battle with Sora and Heart and other ocs when we did the kingdom hearts crossover, and both of them lost their hearts so Artemis/Rasemtix was like. alright. i am grabbing Teixak and i'm gonna figure out how to shove her heart back into her because she's being cringe (rasemtix would've said it derogatory but i'm saying it affectionate). Artemis was ALSO part of the noncanon shenanigans so he ALSO knew Prime, although not... canonically. or well i guess he knew them but None Of The Events Happened except for when they did

and now we get into when that friend got me into homestuck, and we all had self-insert ocs for a fan session, and then a big plot twist was that millennia in the future Artemis made himself immortal, gave himself god powers, and then also cloned himself. and one of those clones ended up being A KG.

so when i was writing the most recent iteration of the masterpost i kinda just had to step back and start cracking up over, like, the Weird Friendship of Ninten and KG and how one of them is, like, related to him. and neither of them had any idea because kaotic wasn't part of the prime/ellis/self/heart/ride wombo combo at the time so i'm picturing it as, like, kaotic's minding her own business when she gets slammed with the full Shared Awareness of NINTEN IS MY GRANDPA????????
