sheslayx’s woman of the week: Hilde Crevits

Hilde Crevits is currently the Flemish minister of Education in Belgium. Prior to her political career, she became a lawyer in the 90s. Her political career started in 1999 when she sat on the provincial council of West Flanders. In 2004, she was elected into the Flemish Parliament. From 2000-2007, she was also an alderman in Torhout. 

Her first cabinet position in the Flemish government was as the Minister for Public Works, Energy and the Environment. In 2009, she became the Minister for Mobility and Public Works.

In 2014, she became the Vice-Minister-President of the Flemish government, and at the same time, she was also made the Minister of Education. Since 2016, she is the mayor of Torhout.

For this week’s assignment I chose to compare and contrast the structure and delivery of the genres I chose to analyze: Iconography and Typography. 

Iconography: 

The structure and delivery for my first genre, the video, is short and simple. Because it is a video, there a certain limitations, for example the time limit, which means the video has to be short in order to keep the audience’s attention, the animation, to entertain people watching the video, and the vocabulary being used, to be able to better connect with the audience. All of this is done on the video. The time limit is short, 2 minutes with 4 seconds to be exact, the animation is enough to keep us on our toes, and the vocabulary use, which is informal, which is better for the type of audience that it is directed towards, for example the use of hashtags ( #womanoftheweek, #quoteoftheday, and #womencandoanything).again, this is done to connect with the younger audience from ages 15-23. 

Typography:

For my second genre, the website, the navigation is self explanatory. The website is crafted into different sections in order to make navigation way easier. For example if you are looking for articles on the women in the association, then you would go to the News and Events tab. This genre does not have many restrictions or limitations because of the type of audience it has. It is limited, however, to the type of vocabulary that is being used. Also, the layout of the website must be easy to navigate, like it was on this site, and must be “catchy” to keep the audience interested and wanting to search more. 

Compare and Contrast: 

The video and the website are intended for two different audiences, hence their different structures and the way they delivered their information to their audience. For example, since the YouTube video was intended for a younger audience and the simple fact that it was a video, the layout was very different compared to the website. Even though they both contain all three elements, the video contains more oral, whereas the website contains way more of the typographic element. They also differ in the type of language that is being used. For example, the video uses more of an informal vocabulary, but the website uses more formal vocabulary because the intended audience is already more educated than the audience for the video. Even though the audience is not the same, both genres are sending the same message, using simple layouts that either can be understood, like in the video, or can be navigated through, like in the website.
