Abigail: July's Woman of the Month

We meet Abigail just when David prepares to attack hers and her husband’s household after a discord with the husband. She is described as beautiful and as intelligent but this intelligent beauty is unfortunately married to a foolish wealthy man.

Abigail is a lady of admirable command who has a large household to run and many servants at her call. When she heard about her husband’s shrewd dealings with David’s men, she lost no time and devised a strategy to get David’s attention. She got together a generous gift and went ahead to meet the shepherd and his men. Such an act, to boldly confront impending doom, calls for bravery. When she came face to face with David, Abigail diplomatically layed down her plea to the shepherd-man whose yet to be crowned king. Her speech demonstrated sound judgement and a prophetic aura and respect for David. David was moved by this woman, so he wasted no time but granted her request to retreat from attacking Nabal.

When Nabal died presumably of a heart attack a short time later, David asked Abigail to grace him by being his wife. In response to David’s request, Abigail gave herself to be this future king’s third wife.
