OMG please write something for Green Creek! Im obsessed and there aren’t enough fic’s on AO3 to keep me satisfied. I would love something from Joe’s POV during wolfsong
okayy this isnt the whole thing but a sneak peek 👀 it's abt 50% of what ive written so far
decided to use proper capitalisation for this too ☠️ who wouldve thought !
Joe knew he hadn't spoken in a long time, though not for lack of trying. He spoke a lot in his dreams, even if it was closer to jumbled screaming. But when he was back in the real world, it was like the words were stuck in his throat, all the way down in the dark pit of his stomach, which roiled unpleasantly every time he smelled the bluesadsonblue from everyone everywhere.
But then. Then Ox, Ox, Ox had come and there was no blue, there was no blue in sight. The dirt road was brown and the leaves were green and Ox's shirt was red, and Ox said it smelled like trees, but more importantly, it had smelled like candy canes and pinecones and epic and awesome, and Joe wanted to go rawr and grr, especially to scare away whatever made Ox sad. He didn't want any blue to touch Ox ever again.

hey soph! i don’t know if you’ve talked about this in here before, but i really do love your writing style and your storytelling and i was wondering if you have any book recommendations or favorite writers you enjoy and feel inspired by! i’ve been struggling to find books i feel connected to the same way i do with fic so i was wondering if you have any recs for that :) sorry to bother in case this is too nosy!!!
Okay, I have talked about this before but i'm gonna give a slightly different version of this list, that's sort of suited to like, books i think are specifically good bridge between fanfiction and published works and also that i love (i am sure i have recommended all of these in some way before BUT)
The Green Creek Series by TJ Klune (Wolfsong, Ravensong, Heartstrong, Brothersong) it's queer, found family and werewolves, but very hp-esque in the type of fantasy, like our world but there just happen to be werewolves (and also witches), and if you like the way i write you'll probably like Klune because we have very similar styles, in general just an absolute gem of a series
Villains series by V. E Schawb (Vicious, Vengeful), angsty anti-heroes and complicated friendships for dayyyysssss, i feel like if you like Regulus you will appreciate the protagonists of this series - victor
Simon Snow series by Rainbow Rowell (Carry On, Wayward Son, Anyway the Wind Blows) started very much as a parody of drarry fanfiction, but by the second book turns into a genuinely excellent stand alone series (not that the first book isn't great, it IS, i just think it plays into the gimmick a bit more, where as the second and third books are just sincerely good), but wizard-orphan-chosen-one falls in love with his school nemesis and they fight the big baddy and deal with the consequences etc.
A Gathering of Shadows series by V.E Schawb (A Darker Shade of Magic, A Gathering of Shadows, A Conjuring of Light) probably the most traditional fantasy, the first book drags, the second two are PHENOMENAL, you have triwizard tournament meets hunger games, gay pirate queer love story, brother angst, the whole shebang!

I’m distilling my thoughts about ravensong into one post.
I listened to the 20 hour audiobook in 14.5 hours, because I listen on 1.5x speed, I hate how slow normal speed is.
I really like the character development of Gordo.
I am glad that we got to see why the Bennett pack was so small, and why Gordo hated them in Wolfsong.
I am not really fond of the way wolves mark their mates (it’s not imprinting like twilight, but it’s not not that) because it really puts a lot of pressure on these children. Gordo spent his whole life around the Bennetts which meant that he never really got a chance to develop who he was outside of them. And even after they abandoned him, his actions were all driven by that abandonment.
I do believe that the pack abandoned Gordo, he was an orphan that they were not only physically responsible for but also emotionally, and if Thomas really wanted to, he could have taken Gordo with him, not only for legal reasons, but also Thomas was the alpha of all and Gordo was his witch. Not to mention he was like 15 years old.
They did not even write. Let alone call him. Phones existed.
So then after he finally moves on, and builds his own family, the Bennetts return. They basically steal his surrogate son (and anchor) and then expect him to be all good.
Obviously he’s not, but he does get over it much quicker than I think he should have.
And Mark, I don’t really like at all? It sucks that he got magically turned into an omega, and I know that he technically went with the Bennetts against his will, but at the same time, he was around 18. He could have written letters or called. He followed Gordo around so much as children, that the whole town noticed. I do not think that Gordo and Mark should have gotten back together. I think that maybe Gordo still could have been his anchor, but I think that the betrayal was much deeper than what was healed.
I still think that Robbie and Gordo should get together, I know that the next book is about Robbie and that he will be getting with Kelly, but I just think Robbie and Gordo should fuck at least once. (If I am ever motivated to write fanfiction, this would probably be it)
I really hate how Gordo got his hand cut off and no one thought “hey it right there, let’s just magic it back on” maybe it has something to do with it having been a silver blade, but Gordo can touch and use silver so it probably was not that.
Limbs can be reattached in some cases, especially a clean cut where the limb is immediately placed in ice.
I’m excited to learn more about Gavin, which based on my research is the feral wolf that’s courting Carter and is Gordo’s half brother from his dad and anchor.
Overall, fuck mark, fuck Thomas, and most importantly fuck Abel and Robert.

I'm reading Wolfsong by TJ Klune and it's making me miss Teen Wolf so much (specially because of the whole tether/anchor thing). Maybe I should rewatch it and become Scott McCall and Thiam trash once again. I'm definitely gonna read some Thiam fanfiction 🙃
On a side note, this book is absolutely beautiful and omg, why have I never picked it up before in all these years I've known about it?

What I read in 2023
And what I thought about it. Pretty much all Scifi/YA, read on if you want book reccs or just to be nosy <3 Have you read any of these books? What did you think of them? Do you have a favorite book of 2023? please let me know <3 Images and image descriptions included below the cut.
I will be using a 5 star system to rate each book.
(Image Description, 4 books covers in a collage including half a soul, the house of lost wives, Saint Deaths Daughter, and The stargazers war). Half a soul By Olivia Atwater. I picked this book up on sale on kindle, and I liked it! It was easy to read but covered some interesting topics. The main character is cursed by the fae as a child and the book covers her dealing with this curse as an adult in victorian england. Think pride and prejudice but with curses and wizards. 4/5 stars. The house of lost wives by Rebecca Hardy. This was another kindle sale book and while i liked it, I think it could have used another run through editing as the pacing was strange. This book follows a young woman who can see ghosts and is trying to find answers behind the death of her sister. 3/5 stars. Saint Deaths daughter by C.S.E Cooney. This book was probably my biggest surprise of 2023. I loved this book, its beautifully written and very fresh. It follows the daughter of 2 famous necromancers as she struggles with family members both alive and dead. 5/5 stars, excited to see more from this author. The Stargazers war by JP valentine. This author has become one of my favorites this year. I love his sense of humor and the fact that his books often have found family feels. 5/5 stars, cannot wait for the next book.
(Image description, 4 book covers in a collage including Briar heart, The false princess, Nona the Ninth, and This quest is Bullshit). Briar heart by Mercedes Lackey. This is a fairy tale retelling that plays with the usual tropes of that genre. Any book by this author is very comforting to me and this one was fun but not stunning. 3/5 stars. The false Princess by Eilis O'neal. This felt like a book 12 year old me would have been obsessed with, and 24 year old me really liked it too. It follows a princess who finds out she was a body double this whole time, and her journey after leaving her childhood home. 4/5 stars. Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir. Listen, this is Tungler dot com, I do not need to sell this book here. 5/5 stars, I will break into your house and leave copies of this series for you to start reading :) This quest is Bullshit! By JP valentine. This is this authors second appearance on this list and for good reason. This book was my first foray into LitRPG - fiction written as though the characters are in a roleplaying game. It was extremely funny and very fresh and exciting to me. If you enjoy playing DND or baldurs gate, you will probably like this series. 5/5 stars.
(image description; 4 book covers in a collage including Terrier, A coup of tea, Wolfsong, and Hyperbole and a Half). Terrier by Tamora Pierce. This was a reread! I love Tamora Pierce, she is one of my go-to comfort authors. This series is not my favorite of her Tortall series, but it still stands up! 4/5 stars. A coup of tea series by Casey Blair. This series follows a princess who chooses her own path - which turns out to be making tea! If you loved Uncle Iroh, you will like these books. 5/5 stars, I wanted more! Wolfsong by TJ klune. This was my first TJ klune book and it delivered. This book will have you asking "Did TJ klune grow up reading high quality werewolf fanfiction?" because it reads like high quality werewolf fanfiction. 4/5 stars. Hyperbole and a Half by Allie Brosh. This is the only nonfiction on the list but for good reason! It is an absolutely hilarious collection of true stories that had me hooting like a goose. 5/5 stars.
(Image description; Just one book cover, Girls made of snow and glass by Melissa Basherdoust). Girls made of snow and glass by Melissa Bashardoust. This book is an honorable mention because I'm pretty sure I read it in 2022, but I really loved it. This book was special to me because it involves a positive relationship between a stepmother and stepdaughter and nice sapphic representation (NOT between stepdaughter and stepmother you guttersnipes). 5/5 stars for me :D

20 fic tag game
I was tagged by @dreamdropxoxo and by @redwritinghood, y’all asked for this
Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favourite opening line. Then tag 10 of your favourite authors!
I’ll tag @deersnake @veretianstarburst @dearanemone and @kurakaw if you haven’t done this already.
i cant be alone (with all thats on my mind) [will be published in a couple months, omegaverse longfic] The early morning light filtered by the open window, curtains drawn to the side and cool air washing the room in small, lazy snowflakes.
call me friend (but keep me closer) They win Marlas.
The Innocence of Youth After hours of complaints, whining, and being a general nuisance, the kid had finally fallen asleep.
Cut the Thread The scratching started a week after they left Nesson, Laurent’s pretty face turned down into a frown.
Heart on a Canvas The room was green and yellow, sun and spring-young leaves tracing waves and life on the walls as people looked at his creation.
Empty Kiss (Filling the Void Remix) Neil sometimes wonders where it all went wrong.
the lion will eat you! Before the day their youngest had been ripped from their hands, turning their world to ash and dust, the Bennett’s had turned their zoo visits into a monthly event, the children’s voices excited and loud as they run around laughing.
paint my skin in painful truths People like Neil wear their nightmares on their skin, haunting and beautiful.
my heart in your hands, it’s yours now Neil remembers the snow in England, soft and white and slower than the one that hit them in Canada that one time they weren’t able to find shelter, the cold creeping into their fingers and freezing the car, scaring them half to death when they realized they couldn’t get away this time.
the sound of my love, in your hands Jean had never thought of Jeremy as soft.
the gods took them back (the problem with having a heart) Prince Kevin didn’t know when things changed.
How to take in strays “There’s magic in every breath you and I take, Abram.” his mother had said right before they caught up with her and raised her battered body on a pyre.
House of Truths Nathaniel felt the heat spread along his fingers as light tendrils danced from one tip to another, catching the shadows in the dark bedroom.

Somethings you might like based solely on the fact that you found this Tumblr aka if you liked house in the cerulean sea you might also like:
Good omens-book and tv show
Howls moving castle- the movie the book and it's sequels
Under the whispering door (which i read and liked, it has a found family trope, queer love story and happy end, exactly what your soul is used to after reading hitcs)
The other books of tj klune although i didn't read any of those yet I've heard they all have found family tropes especially wolfsong and takes of verania I've heard should be good
Once and future (book) found family, queer love(lots of that), happy end and fantasy
The Martian, (the book!) because it was my favorite book before i read house in the cerulean sea and it's funny and good for the soul
BBC ghosts, (tv show) that one might be a bit of a stretch but it has a found family thing going on and i really like it and you can trust me because i have great taste and because i said so
Falling Inn love - (movie) not a queer love story, but it does have a kind of found family trope (the whole city) and it has a character learn to accept help and it reminded me of cerulean sea
There once was this German childrens show, that looking back (even tho i don't remember much of it) that fits this category rather well and a quick google search told me it's called "tracy beaker returns" and you might like it
The magnus chase series (books) - by rick Riordan
Instant family (movie) - based on a true story very wholesome, very difficult topic very much a movie you'd watch with your parents
Now i think i covered every fun aspect of the book except the queer love story between two middle aged men, which is truly rare the only thing i can think of that comes close would be red white and royal blue and the people there are under 30 soo hit me up if you have any recs
Extraordinary magic by ben rector (song) thank the writer apollo_the_sun_god of the fic named after the song (honestly i love you for the writing and for showing me that song!)
Speaking of fanfiction: "you send me, honest you do" by MadHatter13 who could just be tj klunes ao3 account because if you'd print this out and put it in the back of the book right behind "epilog" i wouldn't question it, it's just that well written
Also I've read plenty of cerulean sea ff and basically all of it was great sooo
Anyway feel free to add, in fact if you have anything that might make me feel even remotely like this book did please tell me all about it

Hi, you totally don’t need to respond but what would you say are your favorite/comfort books (or books you would recommend in general) ? :D
Hello lovely! There are a couple: The Green Creek Series by TJ Klune (the first book is called Wolfsong): It's like a real wholesome (wholesome but with explicit sex scenes) found family werewolf series
Audrey, Wait! by Robin Benway, this one is a bit of a deep cut, but in terms of comfort books it's a big one for me. It's about a girl whose ex boyfriend writes a song about her breaking up with him and it ends up blowing up. It's YA and, again, really wholesome (minus the explicit sex scenes), and especially if you're a bit of an emo music geek it's very fun and cute
Fan Girl / Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, Fan girl is about a girl struggling through her first year of University and also being obsessed with writing gay fanfiction about a boy wizard (not remotely relatable) and Carry On is the fanfiction she was writing (ish) it's a little meta and very fun. There's a couple books I love that I think are pretty big on all the book social medias: Darker Shade of Magic, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, If We Were Villains, The Cruel Prince I love all those books.
Son of Achilles by Madelyn Miller, obviously My final rec would be A Place of Greater Safety by Hilary Mantel, it's about the leaders of the French Revolution and if you're someone who likes Historic fiction I would highly recommend!

Hi! I just read the all for the game series and i absolutely loved it. If you haven't read it - its a ya book it includes serious issues (rape, figts, drugs, self harm...) there's action and mafia stuff and so on...obviously its also gay - i liked it bc bing gay wasn't the main plot of the book -- the main character just fell in love with a guy and that's something i would love to see more off. So if you have any recomendations of similar books - so action, serious drama, and queer representation i would love to read it
I asked a friend who has read and enjoyed All for the Game (and who has their finger to the pulse of YA) and they came up with some comps!
The Friend Scheme by Cael Dietrich (storygraph) High schooler Matt's father is rich, powerful, and seemingly untouchable—a criminal with high hopes that his son will follow in his footsteps. Matt's older brother Luke seems poised to do just that, with a bevy of hot girls in tow. But Matt has other ambitions—and attractions. And attraction sometimes doesn't allow for good judgement. Matt wouldn't have guessed that when he makes a new friend, one who is also carrying a secret. The boys' connection turns romantic, a first for both. Now Matt must decide if he can ever do the impossible and come clean about who he really is, and who he is meant to love. via The Storygraph
Once and Future by Cori McCarthy and Amy Rose Capetta (storygraph) When Ari crash-lands on Old Earth and pulls a magic sword from its ancient resting place, she is revealed to be the newest reincarnation of King Arthur. Then she meets Merlin, who has aged backward over the centuries into a teenager, and together they must break the curse that keeps Arthur coming back. Their quest? Defeat the cruel, oppressive government and bring peace and equality to all humankind. No pressure. via The Storygraph
Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas (storygraph) Yadriel has summoned a ghost, and now he can't get rid of him. When his traditional Latinx family has problems accepting his true gender, Yadriel becomes determined to prove himself a real brujo. With the help of his cousin and best friend Maritza, he performs the ritual himself, and then sets out to find the ghost of his murdered cousin and set it free. However, the ghost he summons is actually Julian Diaz, the school's resident bad boy, and Julian is not about to go quietly into death. He's determined to find out what happened and tie off some loose ends before he leaves. Left with no choice, Yadriel agrees to help Julian, so that they can both get what they want. But the longer Yadriel spends with Julian, the less he wants to let him leave. via The Storygraph
The Extraordinaries by T.J. Klune (storygraph) Nick Bell? Not extraordinary. But being the most popular fanfiction writer in the Extraordinaries fandom is a superpower, right? After a chance encounter with Shadow Star, Nova City’s mightiest hero (and Nick’s biggest crush), Nick sets out to make himself extraordinary. And he’ll do it with or without the reluctant help of Seth Gray, Nick's best friend (and maybe the love of his life). via The Storygraph
Wolfsong by T.J. Klune (storygraph) Like All for the Game, this series deals with heavy topics, which has led to a lot of fan crossover - but be forewarned, this series is not YA! I advise checking out a list of content warnings in advance.
In my own digging, I happened upon Tom Ryan, who might be an author to look into. His books, such as I Hope You’re Listening and Keep This to Yourself seem to have dark themes and high tension. The Girls I’ve Been by Tess Sharpe also looks promising.
If you don’t mind fantasy elements, there’s also Legendborn by Tracy Deonn, Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan, We Ride Upon Sticks by Quan Barry, and The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater - which I know has some crossover fandom with All for the Game.

Tagged by @pidgeonpostal! And not tagging anyone else because I have SOILED the original template (soiled it!!) in deference to my [brushes off skirt] mostly clean public-facing appearance.
...I’ve been making a lot of Spongebob memes lately for someone who has not seen Spongebob.
How many works do you have on AO3?
71!
What’s your total AO3 wordcount?
...306,834. Jesus.
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
Uh. Many! I do a lot of one-offs (and/or start long things I never finish) in many different places. My top three fandoms by fics written are RWBY (29), Undertale (25), Gravity Falls/Transcendence AU (4).
Bet you can’t tell where my hyperfixations have fallen.
I’ve also got some Pokémon and Sonic the Hedgehog fics back on my ff.net account, or I think I still do, anyway, but let’s never go back there pls
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1. Sweeter Than Honey (Undertale): Taking a Completely unsurprising first place, with over 600 more kudos than the runner-up, the haphazard Underswap fic featuring a post-college self-insert I wrote just after high school! I shake my head some at how overblown and ridiculous the gap between this and all my other stuff is (c’mon, guys, I’ve written way better fics), but this is also the fic which prompted me (and at least one other person!) to start using they/them pronouns. I’ve gotten a lot of really sweet comments about how seen and appreciated it’s made people feel, so I can’t get down too far about it.
2. To Be A Hero (BNHA): I don’t count myself as part of the BNHA fandom, for a number of reasons, but for something that’s arguably the main motivation for the entire plot, Midoriya’s quirklessness is something I’ve never thought has been handled well. This fic marked the first time I (somewhat tentatively) claimed the disability label (thanks again to Sweeter Than for prompting that realization) to hold that lens over canon. It also really shot up my chart, dang! It’s the only thing here I’d consider “recent.”
3. Three-Sentence Shipping (Undertale): Self-explanatory.
4. Brothers Beyond Bonedaries (Undertale): Ah, the way-overcomplicated AU³ I got nowhere close to finishing. One of the things I really like about Undertale is the interface screw, how Toby Fox uses the medium of the video game to pull off crazy things and enhance his game, but most of the fic written for the fandom seems dedicated to explaining it away, grounding it, rather than taking it to the next step and messing with the medium of fanfiction when you keep the story going. I tried to do something cool like that here, playing with questions like narrator and authorship and breaking the fourth wall, even taking the “final boss” fight to a “totally separate” fic reached through the first by link – but, well, then I never finished it, which probably didn’t make anything less confusing for the poor folks who missed the intent.
5. Spirit and Such (Gravity Falls: Transcendence AU): A whole fic written to line out a particular image I had, which, naturally, never made it to the page. I consider it a bit of a cautionary tale for myself when it comes to writing (near-)original content; there’s a lot I look back on and cringe. I still love the characters, though – well, the important ones – and I think just stepping away from the tried-and-true Mizar formula nets it a star sticker here.
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
>w>; I try, but a lot of the time I just don’t have anything to say? Like, oh, you liked it? Neat. There’s not much to respond to in comments like that, and then I’m weighing falling down on an ~obligation~ to respond to every message in my inbox vs annoying people with copy-paste fluff responses all down the page. Plus I know I make more of an effort to comment on things that didn’t get the attention I feel they deserve, so if I’m driving up my own comment count with nonsense, am I preventing myself from being in a position to receive more comments later? And then if I do comment, am I being too effusive or running people’s ears off explaining things they don’t actually need to know? Sometimes people just want to express interest or admiration and don’t necessarily want a whole peek and guided tour behind the curtain.
Can you tell I have anxiety? x3;
Anyway, I do respond when I can. And I keep most of the comments I’ve gotten to go back and reread.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Hm, hmm. Lots of stuff in the TQ Nonsense series would probably qualify! I’m thinking of Unfixable, Wolfsong, and Ethanol. And there’s Bursting Through A Blood-Red Sky (I Can Live, I Can Breathe), of course, but that was always intended to have a fix-it epilogue. It’s just that I wrote it in a couple of hours day-of, stared at it, and decided I didn’t wanna just then. But now that’s As Long As You’re Still Burning Bright (I’m Still Awake), and that’s probably the best romance I’ve written, so that one worked out.
Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve ever written?
Now and then! When the urge strikes. Uhhh, I’ve got a series of Doctor Who x Undertale crossovers I actually made a whole dang verse for that never made it to print. Get a couple great comments on that every few months or so. I think the World Trigger x Undertale crossover is probably weirder, though, by virtue of WT being a very small fandom. My enthusiasm kinda sputtered out on that one.
Mostly I just daydream crossovers with whatever happens to catch my eye at any given moment. I have a lot!!!! Though odds are out on whether I manage to remember any of them once the initial thought’s passed, lol.
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Gotten a couple eyebrow-raising comments, but I think mostly I’m just too small a writer to draw that kind of attention.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I don’t? think so? Think my tastes are a little niche for most people to bother ^^;
Have you ever had a fic translated?
I had someone apologize once for any language mistakes in their comment cause they had to run it through a translator! That’s not what you asked (the answer is no), but it’s very flattering to think that someone liked my fic enough to read and comment despite the language barrier.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes! :D @pidgeonpostal was gracious enough to agree to co-write Five Nights at Denny’s with me off an idea about shoes. This has fulfilled a long-held dream of mine (collabing with someone, not the shoes) and also introduced me to some lovely people.
What’s your all time favorite ship?
Who has time for just one? ;3c Honestly, I care more about the characters and how the relationship – any relationship – between them changes them than I do about ~A Ship~ as a solid, bounded noun-object. I’ve got characters I like more and less and feelings about who does and doesn’t have chemistry in which directions with whom, but finding anything that agrees with those preferences is hard, harder when you take alloromanticism into account. I’ll play in any sandbox with cool toys, especially if other folks have already built sick sandcastles there.
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
[kicks every single unfinished fic further under the bed] What nooo no WIPs here, everything on my account is either finished or does not exist
I’ve got a couple extra chapters of Sweeter Than floating around unposted, but 1. that fic’s a mess 2. high school Twixt and post-college Twixt are different people and trying to contort myself into three other me-shapes just cause people Like this fic is not something I’m super interested in 3. it’s headed for an emotional dip and I’d rather leave it where it is than post two chapters, stall out again, and leave folks with a bad end.
As for other fics... it’s looking more and more likely that v7 of my Yellow Brick Road AU will never actually make it out. >w>; I’ve got some really great ideas, but not enough to make me feel like I know what I’m doing, and that’s a big roadblock. Plus trying to engage with RT’s Atlas-Mantle worldbuilding in any serious capacity is... a headache. I can’t recommend the Happy Huntress Cinematic Universe enough, but it leaves some pretty big shoes to follow! And I’ve got small feet. <w<;
What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue’s fun, probably as an extension of characterization. I love tearing into what makes people tick, especially against the backdrop of their environment, the story they’re in, and the people they’re up against. Voice is a double-edged sword; I’ve been told my writing is really recognizable and individual, but on the other hand, I’ve been growing frustrated with with the limits of my narrative ability. There’s a strong rhythm I keep when I write (you might notice it here, even) but that leaves me feeling predictable and stale. I’m not sure I’m great at setting as a matter of course, but I’m pretty good at describing setpieces where the need comes up; that comes from my background in poetry, as does the fun I have with sublimating and abstracting complex imagery. And I think I bring some needed nuance to the universal. For good or ill, I don’t do what “everyone else” is doing.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Well, writing, for one thing. If I don’t know how something’s going to go and don’t have the urge to write it, it isn’t getting done, which means there’s a billion things that will never see the page and a few hundred more that are never getting finished. I lose momentum easily and have a hard time getting started, and I put way too much standing on finding a foothold with other people; as critical as I am of my work, I have high expectations for the stuff that passes muster, and it never seems to measure up. I’m also really uncreative. Yeah, I can mix up elements and extrapolate events, but coming up with things wholesale is really hard, which is why I avoid it wherever possible and steal/reskin stuff from other places instead.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
Something along the lines of “Hoo boy, I am Not qualified for this but hopefully it’s decent anyway.” Maria’s Spanish lines haven’t been a big deal – I’ve used it sparingly and, as a Latin language, it should be easy for English-speaking audiences to pick up on the gist – but I’ve had a harder time with Tai’s Chinese, both because I have Even Less background there and because it is, of course, an entirely different language system. If I write it out in English or Romanized italics, am I colonizing it or changing the meaning? If I write it out in the presumed-original characters (presumed because it’s Google Translate and who knows if I’m even barking in the right forest), am I confusing or alienating my presumed-majority-English-speaking audience? Where should I put the translations? Should I put the translations? And for Frisk’s sign language, thinking back, are the brackets I used instead of quotes alienating/infantilizing? I like that different characters give the text between a different feel, but I’m not an ASL speaker – and I’m pretty sure the word is “speaker,” which would only reinforce that that demographic would rather I didn’t do that. It’s important for all these characters, I think, that they use non-English language where it makes sense; it’s part of who they are. But as a white monolingual English-speaker, I don’t think I can really weigh in.
What was the first fandom you ever wrote for?
Thaaaat’d be Pokémon, followed closely with Sonic the Hedgehog. Whether those fics are still on my ff.net account or not (pretty sure I’ve purged them, but you never know) I’ve still got a couple saved to a folder on my current laptop, ostensibly so I can look back and see how far I’ve come and more practically to allow for the possibility of furthering group cohesion through public shaming.
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
I still like the idea behind The Man Who Is Atlas, and Burning Bright (Still Awake) gets props for being my current fic, though it’s currently in that spot where I’m excited to get new chapters posted but also quietly marking everything up in red pen. I think Harbinger gets the crown here, at least for now.
