Hey Lovelies. Been a lot of excitement today, certainly a lot going on! Rhys' birthday week, actual footage of something in Lochness, podcasts, billboards and movies, oh my! I know some of us are struggling a bit with some personal stuff, it's a hard time out there. It hits harder too when you get all this fun dopamine from the internet, then you turn around and look back at normal life and things are tough. Remember to be kind to yourself lovelies. Things aren't always going to go the way you plan or want. It's okay if you can't get out of bed today. It's okay if you scroll on your phone and get your dopamine from goofy ass pictures of celebrities. It's okay if you get up and you brush your teeth, but just can't make your breakfast. Eat something simple. Drink some water, lay down for a while. Little things build to big things. If you can't do laundry today because you don't have the spoons/motivation, then don't do laundry today. Just remember to change your underwear if you have some clean ones cause you don't wanna get a UTI. If all you can do today is exist, you're doing great. You're doing better than great, you're fantastic. Tomorrow you can do a little bit more, or a little less, depending on what you need. Just be kind to yourself and give yourself grace; the world is hard enough as it is, you don't need to beat yourself up for struggling with very real issues. Thank you all for making the past few weeks tolerable, I appreciate that so much. It's keeping my brain chemistry in a spot that's healthier than is used to be. I hope you all know just how wonderful you truly are, and that me and the rest of the crew are rooting for you every day. We're here, we love you <3 Stay well.

Today is the day we have all been waiting for: My third appearance on the amazing sports and entertainment podcast, the Bottom Line WMCX! Look out for fun hints about some really special upcoming events for my platform and podcast, 1 in 5: From Bullied to Healed. Of course, this feature would not be complete without a lengthy discussion about my lifelong favorite NFL football team, the New York Jets. Music writing advice from music writers
Tumblr media
Becoming a full-time music writer in 2017 may seem like a pipe dream, but there are hundreds of people around the world making it happen. Thousands more are writing part-time, be it as a hobby or a way to bring in extra cash month to month.
But how do you, someone just starting out, navigate the often tricky waters of music journalism in the digital age?
There is no one way to become a successful writer, but as with any field there is much that can be learned from those who came before. We recently asked the writers of today what they wish someone told them early on, and we have collected the best responses into this post.
Please take the advice below to heart, but remember: You are your own person. No one can tell you what your voice is or how it should be conveyed other than yourself. Find a path you enjoy and follow it as far as you can.
“The thing I tell everyone who wants to work on the professional side of music is to pick one career path and practice being great at it every single day. If you want to be a writer you need to wake up every morning and write. Set a word count goal and hit it, no matter what. If the resulting article or piece is trash, don’t share it. All that matters early on is that you get into the routine of writing every day and slowly, over time, you will see the quality of your work improve.” - James Shotwell, Marketing Coordinator for Haulix / Managing Editor at Substream Magazine
“I think the most important tip that I've ever received is "act like you belong and no one will question it (most of the time)." - Ali Nugent, Music Director at WMCX 88.9 FM
“Always remember you're there to do a job and gather information, not become creepy and try to be best friends with the artist.” - Rey Roldan, founder of Another Reybee Production
"Plan, but also allow yourself to be in the moment. Whether it's for an interview, review, or entertainment, music is an experience. Let it guide you." - Scott Fugger, writer at 36 Vultures
“Your writing, like your passion for music, is a journey... do not look to the end for that passion, but find the love in every opportunity along the way.” - Michael Pementel, writer at Metal Injection and New Noise Magazine
“Don't lose focus of why you started writing in the first place. It's tempting to get caught up in the numbers game, but nothing will kill your passion faster.” - Angela Mastrogiacamo, Founder of Muddy Paw PR and Infectious Magazine
“Be polite to everyone--tour managers, road crew, merch, stage crew, EVERYONE. This industry is small. Good manners go a long way; shitty manners get you no where.” - Jackie Cular, freelance writer
"Do your best to be unbiased, write news as it is, write reviews fair and balanced- the good along with the bad. Also appreciate everyone who helps you along the way. From the bands to the PR teams and their interns to your contributors and your readers."  - Daniel M Dread, Founder of Dread Music Review
“Do not corner an artist at a show, requesting an interview. Not only is that unprofessional, it is also poor form and puts the artist in defensive mode. If you want to ask them a question, find the tour manager and ask permission from them. They will know the artist's schedule and if he/she minds doing post/pre show interviews.” - Rey Roldan
“Don’t share your Haulix promos with pirate sites. You will get busted and your site’s reputation will be ruined” - Craig Nicholas Roxburgh, Founder of Emo Night South Africa
“Leaking privileged information may lead to a spike in short-term traffic, but this industry is small and publicists don't forget.” - Joshua Wielding, Founder of Digital Tour Bus
"Be prepared to challenge yourself. Take on a band or genre you don't know much about as you can't always cover music that you like. Also be respectful to everyone you work with." - Sean Reid, Founder of Already Heard
“Write about bands and music that you're passionate AND knowledgeable about, it shows in what you write, and it benefits those artists A LOT more. But also keep an open mind about what excites you. Personally, I'll listen to ANYTHING, and enjoy it, except super hate/racist/mysoginist lyric filled music. But there are certain genres--and you can tell which ones--that excite and inspire me to write more insightfully. However, that being said, go outside your comfort zone periodically; like your taste buds, your music interests change based on your life experiences and age.” - Tracy George, Founder of TAG Publicity
"It's never personal, unless directly stated otherwise." - Jake Denning, Social Media Manager at Mediaskare Records
“Don't be afraid to learn everything. In this day and age where the competition is so fierce, it is vital to be a jack of all trades. Learn how to write. Learn how to edit other people's writing. Learn how to work a DSLR. Become familiar with social media outlets. Also, before every assignment, do your research. Know that this job can be stressful and usually doesn't pay well, but in the end, it's worth it because it's a hell of a lot of fun.” - Brittany Woosely, freelance writer
"Even if you think you know everything, you don't. In fact if you think you do, you almost definitely don't." - Molly Louise Hudelson, Founder of Circles & Soundwaves

JUST 6 HOURS Release Official Lyric Video for "One Way Doors" Off of 'SOBER' EP

New Jersey based alternative rock band JUST 6 HOURS has released the official lyric video for their single, “One Way Doors,” off of their sophomore EP, Sober, which is out NOW via Moto Records.
“‘One Way Doors’ is a song about drug use and not being able to become sober, like going through a door and not being able to open it back up, hence the title, ‘One Way Doors.’ The lyrics use quotes from real drug addicts – Just 6 Hours
  Early Praise for Sober
“Jersey Shore-based Just 6 Hours’ forthcoming sophomore EP, Sober, finds the young band maturing with an angst-filled, metal-rooted, punk-fueled sound that will please fans of both Tool and Black Sabbath. Among the standout tracks is “One Way Doors,” which features such an emotional vocal delivery by singer-rhythm guitarist, Seth Barnett, it almost seems as if he is mistakenly trapped in hell and can’t get out. A blend of metal and blues guitar by Nick Marrotta adds to the intensity and integrity of the track.” – The Aquarian.
Track List 1. Ashes 2. Patrick 3. Pity Me 4. One Way Doors 5. Dan 6. Number Man

Just 6 Hours is an alternative rock band formed in 2014 by bassist Gordon Sine. Lead vocalist/guitarist Seth Barnett joined the group in June of 2015 and the band is now based out of Asbury Park, NJ. A change in the band’s lineup just before a gig at The Saint in Asbury Park resulted in the addition of Nick Marrotta and Anthony Giordano on lead guitar and drums, respectively, in the spring of 2017. With only six hours of rehearsal time leading up to The Saint show, the reinvented band took the stage and performed a powerful set. Since that first show at The Saint, Just 6 Hours has performed at major venues across NJ including The Brighton Bar, The House of Independents, The Wonder Bar, The Stone Pony, Dingbatz, and Boontunes. In May 2018, Just 6 Hours was named Jersey Rock Band of the Week by WRAT 95.9 FM and in April 2018 played a live set on WMCX 88.9 FM.
Borne from musical influences that include Nirvana, Green Day, Yellowcard, Pierce the Veil, Black Sabbath, Metallica, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Just 6 Hours sound is a combination of powerful rhythms supporting aggressive guitar drive melodies with lyrics that are thoughtful and emotional. As an original member of the Moto Records community, Just 6 Hours released their second EP, Sober, in March 2018 to rave reviews. Their first EP, H.O.P.E., was released in early 2017. Both are available on all streaming services.

PodcastSteve's Radio Archives: 8/26/1976 Aircheck, Hidden Bobbie Gentry Songs in "Ode to Billy Joe" Movie
In 1976, Robbie Benson and Glynnis O'Connor starred in a movie version of the Bobbie Gentry folk classic, "Ode to Billy Joe." At the time of the movie's release, I was a student DJ at WMCX-FM at Monmouth University. I was also the "production engineer" for some basement tape recordings my dad made with a musical colleague from Fort Monmouth, NJ who happened to be Bobbie Gentry's brother. After one visit with his sister during which he shared the music tapes he and my dad recorded, he returned with a complete set of Bobbie Gentry albums for me.
Needless to say, I became very familiar with her music, and when I saw the movie, I was quite surprised by all the hidden references to her other songs in the movie. None of that got very much attention at the time, so I decided to do a radio show special focusing on the hidden references. That show aired August 26, 1976 and is shared here for the first time in podcast form.

Support Syrian refugee’s with  the power of art by donating to Mercy Corps this Tuesday @ 8:30, The Inkwell
Tumblr media
All interviews done over text message or social media messaging
Write ups will be published as they are written
Gregory Dube
“For me writing is less about making a name for myself but effecting a positive change in the hearts and the minds  of those who read or hear my words,” said 28-year-old Gregory Dube an artist, writer, philosopher and friend.
Dube says that art is the bridge between souls and the more we consciously travrse the distances between them, the more well rounded and compassionate we are.  With that being as it may, Dube wants to be what closes that gap. He himself, by reading at this event, is to help build a more compassionate humanity.
“Considering the cause,” said Dube, in regards to the event’s support for Syrian refugees, “[building compassion and humanity] is very much needed in this time.”
The writer goes on by saying that there is nothing more that gravitates him to this event than his own life, which is enveloped by all the lives in proximity to his own, including the known and unknown. His manifested destiny—desire—is for our species as a whole become more considerate and kind towards one another.
Greg, thank you for the beauty and eloquence you have brought to not only my life, but The Inkwell. It is a great privilege and honor to have discussed the world, its treasures, humans, and all the unknowns we and our universe possess.
Teenage Halloween (Luke Hendriks)
Politics are a huge aspect of Tuesday’s show, whether we say it or not. We aren’t going to shy away from what is important, and that is helping our Syrian refugees. “It is incredibly important to us to be playing this show,” said Luke Hendriks, guitarist and vocalist of Teenage Halloween, “because through all of the political warfare, even going on in classrooms, the truth is, we are leaning towards fascism.”
The voice of Hendrik’s stretches to the ears of many when they say how hard it is for them to watch people drown in their privilege and act as if nothing is going on. “This is incredibly serious, our country does not support LGBTQI+ and POC individuals. Syrian refugees escaping hardships of their land are being banished by a land that was hypocritically build on “liberty and freedom,” while we just stole land from indigenious people,” said the activist.
Hendriks calls this bigotry at its finest.
Teenage Halloween’s upcoming record will definitely envelop politics and songs about identity. The musical gypsy says, the only thing we can do as artists in this time of regression is fight with music, force and words. Hendriks adds, “We want to take our feelings of passion toward identity, mental health, and freedom to the next level with this release.”
Hendriks, tells me they are coming on by to The Inkwell for their performance straight from a gig with Jake Ewald from Modern Baseball’s band Slaughter Beach, Dog in Ramapo for a 12am set. Teenage will rock n’roll with a three-piece acoustic set, from the original eight, with Brandon Hakim, sax player, Brian DeSeno, drummer, and Hendriks himself, guitarist and vocalist.
“Hakim, Brian, and I are doing a stripped down, mic-less set of sax, acoustic guitar, and a snare drum with a blanket,” said Hendriks.
The audience should expect their to be a lot of discussion about themes behind the music that makes Teenage a huge part of who they are as artists. “Definitely expect the unexpected because we are totally winging it!” Said an honest Hendriks.
In terms of the other acts, Hendriks says that it is great to be able to play with everyone. They said, “…everyone on this bill has been very special to me personally, these folks are what keep the scene on the shore going. They turned a desolate, non-existent music community (for a few years) into something very special.”
Hendriks said he has seen Frank Lombardi play at a house show with Pinegrove and has played with Avery Mandeville on a few different ocassions, saying her songs are super relatable and personal. Halogens, Alex Fabio, Jake Newcomb, and Freddie Koechlin are people who, Hendriks says, have kept the DIY punk ethic going, that they are awesome folks who obviously, deeply, care for their community.
Hendriks, and every band I have ever seen him play in, has always stressed the importance of staying authentic and true. Discussing Teenage’s growing presence, like their feature the band had on a Little Elephant, Hendriks said, “Even though it may seem large, I try not to look at the quantity of an event, they continuing on, “I think that as a band, we have tried to stay a positive force, and wherever that has gotten us, that is the reason behind it.”
The band tries to be a sort of voice for those who want to get involved. If you follow Teenage Halloween, you can see this as true, always inclusive and diverse at mind and heart, the sounds, voices, actions, and shows the musicians stitch so carefully together, are sewn with much thoughtfullness, heart, and the truest displayal of self honesty, embracing other humans. If anyone read on about Gregory Dube, a poet reading at Tuesday’s event, he says that this is what we need more of in our humankind, he too uses his art to embrace, and be that sort of voice for the people himself.
Halogens (Zach Henry)
Zach Henry of Halogens, vocalist and guitarist, the 22-year-old from Wall Township said, “We [Halogens] hopes to bring out a lot of people and raise money for a wonderful cause, and hopefully to make some new fans as well.”
Henry says he is proud of Mark Embrey for organizing such a great event. “We haven’t played a show like this before,” says Henry, “we plan on performing stripped down versions of all our songs, which we haven’t done before.”
The artist says the crowd can additionally anticipate a few covers the band expects the crowd will have a really solid reaction too.
Friends of performers of the night, Zach said, “I’m ecstatic to be able to perform with Freddie, Jake, and Alex, particularly because it’s their band’s first show and I know how excited they are.” Henry also adds that having only played with Teenage Halloween a few times, it’s always great to perform with with bands you don’t normally have the chance to.
The Jersey Rock Band of the Week on 95.9 The Wrat this past January, also came out with a split EP with local musician Staten, made of Justin Fernandez Dec. 2, 2016. Support and check it out on either the Halogen’s bandcamp and, or, Staten’s bandcamp.
Asking Henry what music means to him, he responded, “Music, specifically writing music, means a lot to me because it provides an outlet for me to express the things I am currently feeling in a way that can (hopefully) allow people to relate.”
You have certainly done a fine job of this, Zach. I have heard many side conversations at shows, on WMCX 88.9, and at the very famous houses we know so well about how Halogens are either the bees knees, how Halogen’s are a sticker in every basement show venue around, and I have certainly heard, “Zach from Halogens take your shirt off,” more times than I have fingers. I’m stoked to see you, dude! Let’s rock n’roll.
Frank Lombardi
“I offer up that up not as a form of self-flattery, but rather as a sort of preemptive apology, in that the years have a way of generating a deep-seated cynicism and doubt in both, a) human-beings’ ability to change and b) one’s own ability to affect that change,” said 29-year-old Frank Lombardi, a well-known folk artist from Ocean Township, in explaining his slight to significant age difference to those in attendance of Tuesday’s show.
However, Lombardi does not fail to hold an abiding and deep appreciation for those who continue to hold ideals and persistence in creating a better and more just world, even in the harshest of obstacles and as they understand it.
Lombardi is a passionate soul and whether he likes it or not. He has certainly made a change in my life because he gets it. As a musician, artist, as a human being he understands the truth that many do not. He does not fluff up this world with bullshit and glamor, he educates, philosophizes, and shares in conversation and in his music about what is difficult to hear, and, still, calmly influence in his life, but are the people listening? Lombardi has a way of transcending an energy that, although maybe cynical, is still positive (to me), and I believe will come off so, because he has once hoped for humanity’s ability to make change and one’s own ability to affect it—he has a lot of love and care in him.
“My excitement for this show rests with its potential to restore my faith in fellow human beings, even if only temporarily,” said the finger picking machine.
Lombardi says this as he praises any positive collective response to the xenophobic demography that has, as of late, been thrown around in great reckless abandonment.
In discussing the meaning of art in such political catastrophe, Lombardi said that he believes music and art has the power to change and challenge cultural perceptions. Nevertheless, he adds, “At the end of the day, [music and art]  does not subsitute for real power and direct action.”
“What can art ultimately achieve?” Asks the folk musician. He responds by saying that art can surreptitiously and effectively articulate the artist’s message to those who do not share the same opinion; if done right art can inspire those predisposed to your message; and, if even for a minute, allow people to forget about their problems.
“I think art has the undeniable ability to make life, in all of its imperfection, worth living,” said Lombardi.
America Part Two (Alex!Freddie!Jake!)
Alex Fabio, Freddie Koechlin, and Jake Newcomb, friends for years, in bands and performing together since their early teens, have started the beginnings of a new band named America Part Two. Tuesday night will be their debut performance as a band.
Fabio and Koechlin featured together in the DIY band, On Your Marks, which they started at the tender ages of 14-years-old and 15-years-old with Phillip McGarry. In the midst of collaborating and playing together, in 2013, members of On Your Marks and the band, Cross Town Train birthed The Mayflower Collective, a DIY media and entertainment group thst releases music from  the likes of A Will Away, Have a Good Season, Save Face, My Heart My Anchor, and Head North.
“What garnered the decision to be in a band together was friendship, past musical experience, and the strength of our collective vibes,” said the band.
America Part Two says it feels amazing to be playing a show that brings up such important discussion, and we’re proud to have friends who are so culturally aware and active in fighting for the good of the world.
The bandmates live together and have been jamming out for years. Koechlin once told me the importance of his music in the fighting against political imposters like our president. He discussed how all of his own cultural awareness would all go into the music.
“All forms of expression should be powerful,” said Koechlin, “If art doesn’t convey emotion or doesn’t take a stance, is it art at all?”
Koechlin continues by adding that art is for people to perceive. He says that it is a vehicle to provoke thought. “What makes a powerful idea is the passionate artist. It’s the vibration inside us that needs to get out. We need to scream and slam our guitars,” says Koechlin.
Passion certainly embellishes the group as a whole and as individuals. Having said this, everyone should heavily anticipate the music and art that shall be delivered by America Part Two.
Having seen the coming and going of many musical groups, America Part Two describes bands as a collective consciousness that takes on its own life and death cycle. As a group of musicians they live together as a collective soul for the duration of that cycle to then die as a collective soul when that time comes.
“Thank you for having faith in us,” says the band, “that means the world.”
