the more i think about the more i’m sure: this film isn’t about politics and it’s not about america. it’s not about war as such, either. it’s about the act of looking. but not, importantly, a tired parable about how we consume media. there’s no news montages there’s one background television report and one radio broadcast that just gets turned off. the film has nothing to do with the current state of the world. there’s literally zero information about the war besides the fact that it’s happening, and that’s kind of what makes it so shocking

it’s about that porousness between looking and seeing, experiencing and observing. looking as an active practice that has material consequences and psychic ramifications. looking as taking, looking as exchange, looking as the foundation of specific subjectivities.

the sniper scene is garland explicitly telling the audience that the details of who’s fighting who and why don’t matter. the scene in the shop in the town —where everyone pretends things are normal and where no violence takes place— is what the film is about. lee looking in the mirror. jessie looking at lee. lee looking at jessie.

wagner moura. wagner moura!!! his well-worn, experienced-verging-on-jaded adrenaline junkie is no match for the fucked up shit that happens in this movie and he’s great. i really like how his character subverts the “guardian of the magical child” trope and is more of an enabler than anything.

the violence in this film is truly shocking and i think it’s excellent and really well done. everything you think the film will just cut away from it faces down with a level gaze.

which leads to what i think is most successful about the film, a queasy criticality delivered very soberly. the photographs made throughout the course of the film are so beautiful. what is the role of beauty in the documentation of atrocity? why is war photography something that involves aesthetics at all? and what becomes of the people who pursue this profession and all the artistic norms that come with it? what happens to us when we look at their photographs?

don’t let the marketing of this deter you. i really enjoyed it and i was truly genuinely taken aback by some of the things i saw

after that we went 2 teamlabs borderless exhibition in higiya or smt. its a digital art exhibition w projections nd art installations

there was a thingy where u could draw a sea creature nd it will appear on a big screen nd swim around. i made yaranaikafish, poufish, and aquatic cephalopod miku/hatsune mika,, yaranaikafish died bc of oan . miscarriage whichwas a bummer but yk wjts niot a bummer?!?!?! an irish guy named liam who is an animator‼️hes very skibidi sigma nd his eggmanfish drawing is so goatexd,, he sounds very familisr so if u guysz know an irish animstor named liam lmk

finally we had sushi in tsukiji nd i had to speak bad puking out both ends level japanese to translate 4 my mum i h8 it when im nervous bc i end up forgetting words (happens w eng asw tbh) its so 恥ずかしい >\\\< i wanted to go on the plane back immediately but never bsck down never what???
