"You're not going to need me," Oneal said, and Fleet kept trying to hold on to his cousin's fatigues, even as Oneal was pulling away, a look of apology on his face. "They'll keep you safe here, Leelee. You'll do fine. When I find Tilly and Jin, we'll come back. We'll meet you here."

Fleet could see it in Oneal's eyes; he was already checking out, his mind already down the road, on the search for his wife and child. He couldn't keep all of Oneal with him even if he tried.

The people who opened the gates to Redwood watched curiously, but Fleet guessed they'd seen this kind of thing before so they didn't press. They searched him for weapons and as they were patting down his leg, Fleet caught sight of a man a few feet through the gates, down the road. Just ... there, standing, larger than life. Or at least larger than the photos he'd seen of his Uncle Sol, on the fight circuit. "I know him," Fleet told the guards, who shrugged and let him walk ahead, picking up a little speed.

As he got closer Fleet was trying to recognize features, see resemblances, and he thought he could? Maybe? Somewhere in the eyes, somewhere in the rounded chin, somewhere in--

"Hello," he said, coming up short and peering, unblinking, at his uncle's face. "Hello, Uncle Sol. I'm your nephew. I'm Cole's son." He held out his hand, politely.

"Aw, Loretta, hon -- make this easier on a man, won't you?" Ike pleaded with the donkey, scrubbing his knuckles against her long grey nose and following it with a smooch before he bent down again to try and pick up her hoof. She danced it around as he tried to hold her ankle and Ike gave up for the moment, straightening to look at Sol over Loretta's back.

"Anyhow," he said, resorting to just scratching her shoulder for the time being. Sol was looking ... tired, but good. Tended to. Ike liked the shaggier hair but Sol was probably more comfortable this way. "Did you used to shave your head in your ring days?"

Ike truly did want to know the answer to that question, but he was acutely aware that there were other, bigger, heavier things to get to so he looked away for a moment, out at the camp. Serene in the early morning, before the mist had burned off; he and Sol were both early risers. "I was jealous," Ike said. "Not in the normal way, because...." He shrugged. Ike's motivations and behaviour seemed to read as abnormal, to a lot of people. "Of how Mayra sees you as all the -- actually, the only good man she's ever known, and I get thrown in with all the assholes who've jerked her around."

"You're all good and mobile now, huh?"

Ike leaned up against the side of the RV that he spent almost more time in than he did in his own bare apartment -- at least, more waking time. He had his arms folded tight, matching the tight set of his jaw as he looked Sol up and down. Lingering on the neon pink of the cast bandages. "They broke out the prom night colours for you and ev-ery-thing."

Teasing Sol wasn't anything new but the brittle, acrid tone to Ike's voice was. The way that no warmth darkened his eyes was. The slight lift of his upper lip over his teeth was.

"And I notice you've been enjoying a lot of attention--" Ike pushed off from the camper van, knees locked as he stepped forward like some sinister marching soldier doll, throwing his balance between his heels, "--from all kinds of pretty ladies. Hmm?" He smiled tightly, showing no teeth. "Good-for-youuuu, man. Why let the grass grow? Under your gimped-up feet or--" Ike bit off the last part of his sentence in razor-sliced words: "--on Ginny's fucking grave."
