╰┈➤ ❝ [PAIRING] ❞ Logan Howlett x F!Stark!Reader
・❥・GENRE: Fluff :))
˚୨୧⋆。˚ ⋆FANDOM: X-Men & MCU
ੈ✩‧₊˚ WARNINGS: None!
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥SUMMARY: After your dad, Tony Stark, finds out you’re dating Logan, he insists the whole Avengers team meet him. Nervous but with Logan by your side, you head to the compound, with Wade tagging along. The Avengers are curious and a little skeptical, especially Tony, but Logan holds his own during dinner. He impresses the team with his confidence and clear care for you, even earning Tony’s reluctant approval by the end of the night. Despite the initial tension, Logan becomes a part of your chaotic family, and everyone accepts him.
Part 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE COMPOUND WAS QUIET. Too quiet. You'd been on edge ever since Happy had called you that morning, voice full of that awkward yet endearing nervousness he always got when delivering bad—or rather, inconvenient—news.
“Your dad knows.”
Three words that had set your entire day into a downward spiral of anxiety. Of course, Tony would find out. He had eyes and ears everywhere, despite you trying to keep things on the down low. And now, he had apparently told everyone.
Your boyfriend, Logan, sat beside you on the drive to the Avengers compound, eyes fixed on the road, completely unfazed. He was never one to be easily rattled. He hadn’t even batted an eye when you mentioned the entire Avengers team was going to be waiting to meet him. If anything, he just lit a cigar and shrugged, saying, "Not the first time I've been sized up by a bunch of superheroes."
Logan was like that. Unbothered. Calm in the face of impending chaos.
Unlike you.
You let out a deep sigh, clutching the steering wheel a bit tighter. "You know, we could just make a U-turn right now," you muttered, hoping, praying he’d take you up on the offer.
Logan chuckled, the low rumble soothing and maddening all at once. "Nah, darlin'. We’ll be fine. What’s the worst that could happen?"
"Logan, it's my dad. My dad, who, mind you, is Tony Stark. Genius. Billionaire. Overprotective father extraordinaire. I love him, but he’s going to grill you."
He smirked, one of those self-assured, slightly cocky looks that made your heart skip. "I’ve been through worse, trust me."
You were about to respond when a voice suddenly piped up from the backseat, startling you both.
“Hey, so what’s for dinner? I hope it’s not shawarma. I had that yesterday, and let me tell you, intestinal distress doesn’t even begin to cover it.”
“Wade?!”
The red-suited mercenary, Wade Wilson—aka Deadpool—grinned as he popped his head between the seats. "Who else? You thought I’d miss a chance to meet the Avengers again? Besides, I’ve got a bet with myself to see which of them cracks first. My money’s on Banner. Big guy’s got a short fuse."
You groaned. “Wade, you weren’t even invited.”
"Yeah, but you love me," Wade said with a wink. "Plus, I’m the one who introduced you two lovebirds, so technically, I’m responsible for all of this.”
Logan rolled his eyes, but there was a glint of amusement there. He had a weird, chaotic friendship with Wade that baffled you at times. Still, Wade had been the one to introduce you to Logan in the first place. After one of those typical Wade escapades where you'd found yourself smack dab in the middle of a multiverse-saving mission, Logan had swooped in, gruff and full of snark, but undeniably magnetic. You'd been hooked ever since.
"Alright, just... please don't say anything weird when we get there. This is already going to be awkward enough as it is."
Wade gave you a salute. "Scout's honor, kiddo."
~
When you arrived at the compound, Logan strode beside you, a protective yet calm presence. Wade, naturally, flanked the other side, completely unfazed by the prospect of facing a room full of Earth's mightiest heroes.
As you entered the living area, the first to greet you was not your father, but Morgan Stark, Tony’s precocious little daughter, who ran up to you with a big grin on her face.
"Hey, Morgs," you greeted, bending down to hug her.
Her eyes immediately shifted to Logan, who watched the interaction with a faint smile. "Is this him?" she asked, her eyes bright with curiosity.
You nodded, a little nervous. "Yup. Morgan, this is Logan."
Morgan looked up at him with wide eyes, studying him. Logan crouched down to her level, his usually gruff demeanor softening just a bit. “You must be Morgan. Your sister talks about you all the time."
Morgan beamed. "You’re tall."
Logan chuckled. “And you’re smart.”
Morgan grinned and then, in typical kid fashion, dashed off, satisfied with her judgment. "I like him!" she called out as she disappeared into the kitchen.
One down.
Then the rest of the team filtered in—Tony, Pepper, Steve, Nat, Clint, Bruce, Thor, and even Rhodey. They all sized Logan up in their own way.
Tony, of course, was the first to speak.
"So," he said, voice casual but his eyes sharp, "this is the guy?"
Logan straightened up, meeting Tony's gaze with that signature, unflinching confidence. "Yup."
Tony took a moment, probably running a full background check in his mind before nodding. “Alright. Dinner’s almost ready, but first, I think the team’s got some questions.”
Steve, ever the diplomat, stepped forward with a polite smile. “Logan, right? How’d you two meet?”
Before you could respond, Wade butted in.
“Oh, it’s a great story!” he exclaimed, gesturing dramatically. “So, picture this—alternate dimensions, worlds colliding, typical Tuesday stuff. I’m getting my ass handed to me by some bad guys—”
“I don’t remember it that way,” you interjected.
“Shh, let me have this moment. Anyway, I call in Logan here for backup, because duh, claws and healing factor, and then boom, sparks fly between these two.”
Natasha raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms as her eyes flicked between you and Logan. "Sparks?"
You opened your mouth to reply, but Wade was too quick. "Like fireworks on the Fourth of July. Or maybe that was an explosion—I can't remember."
Logan sighed, clearly used to Wade's antics by now. “We met on a mission. Wade was being a pain in the ass, as usual. Your girl here held her own, and I liked that."
Your face heated up at Logan’s praise. You noticed Natasha and Steve exchanging a look. Clint leaned against the wall, his arms crossed, lips quirking up slightly as if he was already sizing Logan up.
“Multiverse missions, huh?" Clint finally said. "That must’ve been fun.”
Logan smirked, locking eyes with Clint, both men now in some sort of unspoken stare-off. “Fun's one way to put it.”
Clint didn’t break eye contact but gave a slow, approving nod. “So you’re used to the crazy life. Good.”
Thor, ever the enthusiastic one, stepped forward next, looking Logan up and down. "Ah, a fellow warrior, no doubt!" He clapped a hand on Logan's shoulder, earning a slight grunt from him. “Tell me, Logan, have you faced a frost giant before? Or perhaps a horde of dark elves?”
Logan gave a half-shrug, completely unfazed by Thor’s boisterous personality. “Haven’t seen those specifically, but I’ve fought my fair share of things with claws, teeth, and bad attitudes.”
Thor laughed heartily, clearly impressed. "Then we shall have many stories to exchange!"
Bruce, who had been hanging back, finally spoke up. "So, uh... any anger management issues we should be aware of?" He asked it cautiously, but you could see the hint of a grin tugging at the corner of his mouth.
Wade snorted. "Banner, you're one to talk."
Logan just grinned, clearly enjoying himself. "Let’s just say I know how to handle myself.”
Natasha’s gaze sharpened. "I’ve heard about you. Wolverine, right? Healing factor, claws, indestructible skeleton."
Logan nodded once. "That’s me."
She studied him for a moment longer, then gave a small, approving nod. “Impressive.”
Tony, though silent for most of the interaction, was still sizing Logan up. You could feel the weight of your dad’s expectations hanging over the room. He wasn’t one to just roll over and let things be.
“So, Logan,” Tony said, leaning back with a scrutinizing look. “You’ve been around a long time. Done a lot, I assume. How exactly do you plan on handling my daughter?”
Logan didn’t flinch under Tony’s gaze. Instead, he gave a small, almost imperceptible smile. “She can handle herself just fine, Stark. But if you're asking if I’ve got her back? Always.”
The room went quiet for a beat. Even Wade had paused from whatever chaotic inner monologue he had going. The weight of Logan’s words, his seriousness, seemed to sink into everyone.
Tony’s eyes flicked to yours, and for the first time that night, his expression softened. A flicker of something—acceptance, maybe—passed across his face.
“Well,” Tony said, standing up and smoothing his shirt. “In that case, I suppose we should eat.”
As everyone began to move toward the dining room, you felt Logan’s hand slide into yours, giving it a reassuring squeeze. You looked up at him, relieved to see a small smile playing on his lips.
“They like you,” you whispered.
Logan shrugged, but there was a warmth in his eyes. “More importantly, they love you.”
You leaned into him slightly as you both followed the rest of the Avengers. And as for Logan? He had passed the test.
~
As the group settled into the dining room, the mood shifted slightly—less tense, more familial. The Avengers took their seats around the long table, conversations gradually picking up, but you couldn’t shake the subtle glances they kept throwing Logan’s way. It was clear they were still sizing him up in their own way.
Logan, for his part, remained calm. He was good at reading a room, better at letting things roll off his back. You’d noticed that about him early on—he had this way of commanding a space just by being in it, without the need for flashy words or grand gestures. Even so, you could tell by the way his hand remained close to yours that he was paying attention to every little detail. Watching, listening, judging.
Morgan was seated next to Tony, happily talking to Pepper about something she’d done at school that week, her occasional glance toward Logan full of childlike curiosity and approval. To her, Logan wasn’t an intimidating figure. He was your boyfriend—nothing more, nothing less. The simplicity of it warmed your heart.
Dinner was served, and Wade, who had somehow managed to squeeze in between Natasha and Clint, immediately started in on a loud, entirely unprompted story about a mission in Madripoor that no one really asked for.
“So there I was, pinned down by a mob of highly trained ninja assassins—yes, they exist, Steve—and I’m about to go down for the count when Logan here comes in with the whole snikt, snikt thing,” Wade mimed Logan’s claws extending with dramatic flair, “and saves my beautiful behind from a fate worse than death: losing my taco night.”
Steve sighed, rolling his eyes good-naturedly. “Right, because that’s clearly the priority in a life-or-death situation.”
“Exactly!” Wade pointed enthusiastically, as if Steve had just made his point for him. “This guy gets it.”
Natasha leaned back, smirking as she cut into her food. “So, Logan saved your life, and that’s how the two of you met?”
You chuckled, shaking your head. “Not exactly. Logan and I didn’t really meet officially until a little later. Wade just… happened to be there. Per usual.”
“Per usual, my dear?” Wade gasped dramatically. “You wound me. You wouldn’t have even met this tall drink of Canadian water if it weren’t for me!”
Logan gave a quiet grunt of amusement, though he didn’t say anything. Instead, he caught your eye, the barest hint of a smile tugging at the corner of his lips as Wade continued his rambling story.
Thor, who had been listening intently to Wade’s increasingly exaggerated tale, turned to Logan, looking genuinely intrigued. “So, Wolverine, your claws—are they forged of enchanted metal, much like Mjölnir?”
Logan paused, mid-chew, and raised an eyebrow at the Asgardian. “Not exactly. Adamantium. Strongest metal on Earth. Had it grafted to my skeleton a long time ago.”
Thor nodded, stroking his beard thoughtfully. “Ah, I see! A most noble addition. I myself am well-acquainted with weaponry of such caliber. Though I must admit,” he leaned in slightly, “I would be most curious to see them in action.”
Logan gave a low chuckle. “Maybe after dessert.”
As the conversation drifted on, Logan slowly began to settle in. Steve asked him a few more questions about his past—carefully avoiding anything too personal or traumatic—and Clint, always the quiet observer, seemed to be assessing Logan from across the table, eyes sharp but not unkind.
Tony, meanwhile, hadn’t said much since dinner started. He watched everything, listened to everyone, but remained quiet, only offering the occasional comment or quip. You knew him well enough to recognize that he was still processing. As much as Tony trusted your judgment, the whole “overprotective dad” thing didn’t exactly disappear overnight.
“So,” Tony finally spoke up, setting his fork down as the rest of the table quieted. “You’ve been through a lot. War, battles, more than most people could handle in one lifetime. And yet, here you are.”
Logan glanced at him, not quite sure where this was going, but he nodded. “Yeah. Seen more than my share.”
Tony leaned forward, elbows on the table, and his gaze sharpened, narrowing slightly as if he was putting Logan through one last test. “My daughter’s important to me— really important. You say you’ve got her back, and I respect that. But if you’re sticking around… you’re gonna need to know one thing.”
The room stilled. Even Wade had gone quiet, which was a rare feat. Logan met Tony’s stare head-on, not a trace of intimidation or hesitation in his gaze.
“What’s that?” Logan asked evenly.
Tony exhaled, his expression softening—just a fraction. “This family? We’ve been through hell. Lost people we cared about. We’ve had our world flipped upside down more times than I can count. And the thing is… when you’re in, you’re in. No half-measures. No walking away when things get tough. You stick it out. You fight for the people who matter.”
Logan didn’t blink. His gaze shifted briefly to you, then back to Tony. “That’s how I’ve always lived.”
Tony nodded slowly, almost imperceptibly. There was a weight to that moment, a silent understanding passing between them. Whatever final test Tony had in mind, it seemed Logan had passed.
Pepper, sensing the shift, smiled softly and placed a hand on Tony’s arm, quietly grounding him. “Dinner was wonderful,” she said warmly, breaking the tension. “I think we’ve had enough grilling for one night.”
Natasha smirked, raising an eyebrow at Logan. “You’ve survived the inquisition. Impressive.”
Logan shrugged. “Didn’t seem all that bad.”
Rhodey laughed. “You’re lucky. The last guy that showed up to date one of Stark’s kids? He didn’t make it past the appetizers.”
Tony snorted, shooting Rhodey a playful glare. “That’s because that guy showed up in a muscle car blaring AC/DC and quoting Shakespeare.”
“I thought you liked AC/DC?” you teased.
“I do. Not when it’s a first impression.”
Morgan, who had been quietly observing the back-and-forth, suddenly piped up. “Are you staying here tonight?” she asked innocently, looking up at Logan.
Logan blinked, clearly not expecting the question. “Uh…”
“Morgan,” Pepper began, her tone gentle but with that motherly undertone of “not now.”
“What? If he’s dating my sister, maybe he should stay!”
Wade, sensing an opportunity to cause more chaos, grinned beneath his mask. “Oh, I second that motion, mini-Stark! Logan here can bunk with me. I’ll show him my extensive collection of ‘80s action movies. It’ll be like a slumber party, only with more explosions.”
Clint nearly spit out his drink, trying to stifle his laughter, and even Natasha cracked a rare smile.
Logan, who had been stoic and composed throughout the entire evening, just shook his head. “Yeah, I’ll pass.”
You burst out laughing, and as you glanced around the table, you saw that, little by little, Logan was beginning to fit in with the Avengers’ chaotic dynamic. Sure, there were still guarded looks and unspoken tests, but your family—both blood and found—was starting to accept him in their own way.
As dessert was served and the conversation shifted to lighter topics, you felt Logan’s hand rest on your knee under the table, a small, reassuring touch that grounded you. You leaned into him slightly, smiling to yourself. Maybe this whole thing hadn’t been as bad as you’d feared.
By the time the evening began winding down, Logan was in the middle of an animated conversation with Thor about battle strategies, Wade was loudly recounting yet another exaggerated mission story to anyone who’d listen, and Morgan had fallen asleep in Pepper’s arms.
Tony, now more relaxed, leaned over to you as the others chatted around the table. “So… Logan,” he said quietly.
You glanced at him, unsure of what was coming next. “Yeah?”
Tony gave a small, reluctant smile. “I still think you could’ve given me a heads-up earlier, but… he’s alright. I guess.”
You grinned, bumping your shoulder against his. “Told you so.”
Tony chuckled softly, shaking his head. “Don’t get used to it.”
As the night wrapped up and the team slowly began to disperse, you and Logan lingered by the door. Tony walked up to Logan, offering his hand.
“Take care of her,” Tony said, his tone steady but genuine.
Logan gripped Tony’s hand firmly, meeting his gaze once more. “Always.”
With that final exchange, you left the compound with Logan by your side, Wade tagging along (of course). And as you drove away, your hand resting in Logan’s, you felt a sense of peace settle over you.
Your family had met him. He’d met them. And while it hadn’t been perfect, it was the first step in blending the two worlds you cared so deeply about. In the end, Logan wasn’t just a part of your life anymore.
He was a part of theirs.

It's a Gravity Falls era, and we're all just living in it.
It's been a big week for Minecraft fans, with the trailer for A Minecraft Movie dropping to much heated discussion. Dan and Phil are on tour, with many on- and off-stage images of the dynamic duo flooding the dash in those corners of Tumblr dot com. Jujutsu Kaisen continues to trend as we approach its completion at the end of the month. The Cats of Tumblr and the Artists on Tumblr get an honorable mention here as they continue to make everything better. And Old Man McGucket makes his first appearance in this particular era, as much of this list continues to read like the phone book for a little town called Gravity Falls. This is Tumblr's Week in Review.

Top 10 Sexiest Mutants
but I'm gay so it's only the guys
Honorable Mention: Kobak Never-Held
Tumblr media
I'm not really into porcupines or whatever he's supposed to be, but he has a nice ass and that's all that really matters.
#10: That one Betsy Braddock variant who has a beard
Tumblr media
Okay I know this one's kind of a stretch but I always get excited to see this guy in the background when the Captain Britain corps shows up. If Betsy is a mutant her variants would be too, right? So this counts?
#9: Wolverine (Logan Howlett)
Tumblr media
Pretty basic, I know, but he's popular for a reason and that reason is that he's sexy.
#8: Forge
Tumblr media
Mustache <3
#7: Sabretooth
Tumblr media
I'm pretty sure he was my first crush as a kid lol. And as stupid as it looks the Corsair cosplay here is really doing it for me somehow.
#6: Manifold
Tumblr media
I'm usually not into yellow for clothing but he manages to make it look good, and I love a character who has a signature color.
#5: Nightcrawler (with the horns, from Legion of X)
Tumblr media
He's a sexy little demon man :)
#3 (tie): Magneto & Fisher King
Tumblr media
I'm not the only one who kind of ships them, right? Like, there's something there.
#2: Jon Ironfire (as seen in Sins of Sinister)
Tumblr media
It's a shame this version of him is from a timeline that no longer exists, because he's sooooo cool. He's got sick horns and a huge beard and he's missing an eye and he can turn his blood into metal, like come on.
#1: Colossus (in his 2022 Hellfire Gala outfit)
Tumblr media
Obviously. I'm still mad they came up with this amazing design and then he was in the background of like 3 panels throughout the entire event and that was it.

The constant beeping of the machines. The slow and steady breath. Grey walls. Setting sun shyly picking through the taupe louvered shutters. Night is falling and so does the rain. The unremitting procession of nurses, doctors and sick people. Hospital life. It’s been four days and nothing changed. She’s still lying there, eyes closed, her body surrounded by white sheets, hands resting by her sides, sliver engagement ring shining around her ring finger, her chest rising and falling gently. I spent the last four days pacing up and down like a caged lion, constantly dwelling on how we met and what happened on that night.
“How is she today ?”, a nurse asks, entering the room, to check on the screens.
“Same as usual”, I answer, sitting on the chair next to the bed, grabbing the cold hand resting on the covers.
“Don’t worry mister Barnes, she’s going to wake up at some point”, she optimistically says. “And everything will be alright.”
She smiles and then, exists the room.
I intertwine my fingers with hers and smell her hand, looking for her usual scent, but it’s not here anymore, it’s long gone. Sweet Romance, that’s the name of her perfume. It enchanted me from the beginning, the smell of plum and blackberry, the sweetness of the morning rose, mixed with jasmine. Sweet romance, not really what she signed of when she chose to be with me. It turned me upside down when I first smell it, the day I met her.
How can I even forget that blessed day, or rather night, I met her. It was five years ago. I remember the moment she stepped into the club, with Steve by her side. I’ll always remember that little navy blue dress sprinkled with white birds. I was sitting with Sam, Clint, Natasha, Wanda, Peggy and Vision when he led her to our table, his hand on the small of her back to guide her towards us. When she came into the light, the first thing I noticed were smiling eyes and a bright smile on her painted red lips. She probably was the most beautiful woman I’ve ever met, and I would probably be the most fucked-up man she would ever meet.
“Guys, let me introduce someone to you ! This is Y/N Howlett, she’s my new neighbor.”
“Hi”, she waved at us.
“Of course you already know Peggy, and these are some of our friends, Sam Wilson, Clint Barton, his girlfriend Natasha Romanoff, Wanda Maximoff, Vision Shade, her boyfriend, and James Barnes, my best friend, but he goes by Bucky.”
“Nice to meet all of you”, she said, her voice peaking over the loud music.
“So Steve finally managed to make you go out of your place”, Peggy stated.
“Yeah”, she answered, “he said I should meet new people as I haven’t really had time to do it myself, he would make me meet some himself.”
“And that was an excellent choice”, Sam said, raising from his seat to take the one next to Y/N. “So beautiful, can I order you a drink ?”
“Sparkling water please. With a slice of lemon.”
“Consider it done !”, Sam exclaimed, rising on his feet. “Please, take a seat”, he gestured to her and, she complied, sitting next to Wanda.
After a few minutes, she started chattering with the girls, what about, I didn’t really know, still don’t for the matter, but didn’t care and whatever they were talking about is not the subject. I was completely mesmerized by her, her bright Y/E/C eyes shining through the lights of the club, her Y/H/C hair glowing in the dark, her straight back, ankles crossed. I don’t know which one of the girls said a funny thing but, she laughed, a crystal clear laugh, the most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard. I haven’t contemplate her enough that Sam came back a few minutes later with two glasses in his hands.
“There you are sweetheart”, he said, putting down the glass of water in front of Y/N.
“Thank you”, she told him and then took a sip of her beverage.
“Now let’s talk about you, princess”, he began. “What do you do for living ?”
“I’m a dancer, a ballerina”, she answered.
“A ballerina. So I assume that you must be very supple then”, Sam added, not so cunningly, wiggling his eyebrows.
“Sam please, leave the poor girl alone”, Steve suddenly appeared next to us, standing a beer in one hand, his second one in his jeans pocket. “I already had a hard time to make her get out of her apartment, so please don’t scare her.”
“What kind of show are you working on ?”, Wanda questioned.
“Swan Lake, that’s the brand-new show my company is putting on. I’ve had the honor of being chosen to play the Swan Queen”, she responded, shyly blushing.
“Wow Swan Lake and Swan Queen, how… Amazing.”
“Say the truth Wilson, you don’t know anything about that story.”
“Because you do Barnes, maybe ?”
“Actually, yes”, I answered him. “Swan Lake is a ballet written by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. It’s about a princess, turned into a swan by an evil magician during the day, and she’s human again by night. One day, a prince that was hunting the swan followed her to the lake she belonged, and when the moonlight hit on her, she became a beautiful princess, they both fell in love and to break the curse, he promised to marry her. Except that the magician didn’t agree about that, and so he turned a black swan into the princess’ clone, so when the prince saw the black swan at the ball, he thought she was his princess and promised her eternal love. But then, the trick is revealed and the prince rushes to his true love, but she’s dying. They both die in the end. That’s a very sad story.”
I took a mouthful of my beer, everyone was gazing wide-eyed at me.
“What ?”, I said. “It’s not because that I’m in the army that I’m not cultivated.”
“You’re in the army ?”, Y/N asked.
“Yes, so does Steve and Sam.”
“My dad was in the army too”, she smiled at me.
And that’s how everything started. At the end of the night, we all head to Steve’s apartment, and we left her next door, with the promise of a brunch at Steve’s the next day. At the end of said-brunch, I headed back home with her phone number and a dinner date the next week to the great displeasure of Sam.
I took her somewhere fancy, because I wanted to woo her, literally.
“You didn’t need to”, she said, when we stopped in front of the restaurant.
“I just wanted to treat you like you deserve to doll, a real princess.”
“I’m no princess, James.”
“That’s what you say”, I winked at her.
We followed the maître d'hotel to the table I booked, and we started to chat of everything and nothing after we ordered food. When we get served, she simply hummed in pleasure when she took a bite of her pasta dish.
“So, what can you tell me about yourself ?”, I questioned her. “You told me your father was in the army.”
“Yes”, she responded, wiping her mouth with her napkin. “Maybe in your regiment you’ve already heard about James Howlett. Well I think you would have more heard about Logan Howlett, my dad goes by his middle name. He thinks that James is too common name. Please, don’t be offended.”
“I’m not”, I chucked. “He’s right by the way, James is a too common name.”
She laughed at it, so loud and clearly, it made some clients turning to our table.
“Sorry”, she said, drying away the tears from her eyes. “It’s just, no one ever agrees with my dad, especially not my boyfriends. They were all afraid of him. But, my father is just a big bear, you have nothing to fear if he likes you.”
She took another bite of food.
“Those are absolutely delicious !”, she swallowed, “So where were we ? Oh yeah, you wanted to know about me. Well, I’m twenty-five years old, I was born at Salem Center, Westchester County, my uncles have a manor there. My mother finished her pregnancy there. Her name was Kayla and she was an artist. Since the beginning she knew she was sick, a cancer, a violent one. She knew that she was going to die. She was three months pregnant with me when she knew she wouldn’t make it if she wasn’t cured. She had to choose between chemotherapy or me, and she chose me. She chose me because she had a miscarriage a year before, and she thought she would never had another baby. I was my parents’ miracle. My father begged my mother to get cured, she refused. The doctors said she could finish her pregnancy, but, after, there were only a tiny hope that she could be cured because the cancer would have been too advanced after my birth, and it would be too late. As my dad was away for a pretty long time, he told her to go to my uncle Charles and Erik’s home, it’s a big manor uncle Charles inherited from his father. After my birth, my mother went back to the hospital, she was attentively followed-up care while I was inside of her belly, but it was too late, as the doctors said. They told her she had six months left, and she better enjoy them and her newborn. My father went back for my birth, when she told him, he asked for a year of permission, he explained the army, and they let him take that year. My mom passed five months later instead of six. Dad stayed at uncle Charles’ with me until he had to go back to work. He asked uncle Charles and uncle Erik if I could stay with them while he was on duty, to avoid me to move every time, and know that I was somewhere safe, having a normal life. So I lived with my uncles and dad came back each time he could. I had a happy life, and they told me a lot about my mom. They signed me up for ballet at six when I asked them and I dance ever since. What about you ?”
“Me, comparing to you, my life is rather boring. Also, twenty-five. Born, raised and lived all my life in Brooklyn. I have five sisters, my mother is a school teacher and my father is a caterer. My sister Rebecca works with him, she’s going to take the business over when dad retires. As you already know, Steve is my best friend, we grew up together, decided to go to the army together and there, we met Sam. Steve’s way is already all choose, he’s going to be an art teacher, but I don’t know yet what I’m gonna do. I chose the army because I didn’t know what to do after high school. We signed up and that fucking country was at war. I’ve seen so many things, horrible things.”
“How long left ?”
“Two years and a half, and I’m gonna be a free man”, I smiled to her, and she smiled back.
We continued to speak through dinner and then, we walk in the sweet beginning of the spring. After an hour or so, we reached her apartment block. She fumbled into her purse to find her keys.
“I’ve spent an amazing evening, thank you, Bucky”, she put herself on her tiptoes and kissed my cheek.
I watched her pass the door of her building, a goofy smile on my lips, my hand touching my skin where her lips were merely seconds before. I started to walk, jumping happily on my way back home. Then, after that night came some other dates, first kiss, first time, moving together, meeting Logan.
“Relax Buck, everything is gonna be alright”, Y/N said, smoothing my shirt.
“I don’t know doll, with the portrait you made me about your father, I think I have many reasons to be afraid of him.”
“Bucky, you make me happy, I’m sure that he’s going to be happy for me. I’m his only child and all he wants is my happiness”, she stated, leaning her forehead against mine. “Don’t you worry”, she pecked my nose and turned back to the meal she was preparing.
“You’re the best baby”, I wrapped my arms around her waist, burying my nose in her hair.
Thirty minutes later, a tall man with brown hair and hazel eyes, wearing blue jeans and a leather jack, was standing in the doorway, a bouquet of flowers in his hands.
“Ya must be James”, he stated with a drawling voice.
“Yes, sir. But you can call me Bucky”, I told him, holding out my hand.
“Where’s my girl ?”
“She’s in the kitchen, finishing dessert. But please, come in.”
I moved aside to let him enter the apartment. He stepped in and took a look around. His eyes fell on my uniform that was hanging on a coat rack.
“So you’re in the army.”
“Yes sir. 107th. I’m going back in the field in a week.”
“Be careful there kid. I know what I’m talking about.”
“Dad !”, Y/N’s voice came from the kitchen’s doorway.
“Hey bug”, he said turning towards her to hold her in his arms. “Nice place you have here.”
“Thanks. I hope you’re hungry, dinner’s ready”, she smiled up at him, while she showed him his seat around the table.
It turned out that Logan was very nice behind his bear behavior, just a man who cares a lot about his only daughter’s well-being. He left shaking my hand, saying that it was nice to meet me and to be careful on the field. He kissed Y/N’s forehead, and left, telling her that she had made a great choice.
The next week, Y/N and Peggy came with Steve and I to take us to the military base from where we were supposed to leave.
“Be careful”, she whispered, “come back to me. Don’t do stupid things there, I beg you.”
“Don’t worry doll, I will”, I murmured back. “I love you.”
“I love you too.”
I lent to kiss her soft lips before taking her into my arms, silent tears falling from her eyes. Next to us, Steve and Peggy were also saying goodbye to each other, Peggy was crying her eyes out, begging Steve to not be reckless this time. When it was finally time, we left the girls and headed to our plane.
We came and go for the next two years without any accident, our missions went well, until that bloody day, a little more than six months before the end of my duties. It was supposed to be a recon mission, just a fucking recon mission. I was walking, gazing all around me and then, there were screams, a searing pain, and everything went black. When I opened my eyes, everything around me was white, I was lying in a hospital bed, when I turned my head, Steve was there, half-asleep in a chair. A nurse entered the room.
“Glad to see that you’re awake Sergeant Barnes”, she softy said. “I’m gonna call the doctor for him to come and see you.”
She shook Steve up before exiting the room, telling him that she was going to come back with the doctor.
“Shit man, you frightened us !”, Steve exclaimed. “We thought you’d never wake up. You remained unconscious for almost a month ! How do you feel ?”
“A little numb, but I think everything is alright”, I answered him. “Did someone call my parents and Y/N too ?”
“I did, and they were bloody worried. Buck”, he said after a pregnant pause, “I don’t know how to say that to you, because you clearly didn’t realize it yet but… Because of the bomb that exploded next to you that day, the doctors had to… The doctors had… The doctors had to amputate your left arm Buck, I’m… I’m sorry”, he stuttered.
“What ?!”, I turned my head to my left side and all I saw was an empty place where my left arm usually stand. There’s nothing there, just a white sheet and a bandage around what’s left of my shoulder. “Have you told anyone ?”, I questioned, clenching my teeth.
“No, I swear. I thought this wasn’t my place to do it. I just gave them news, I thought you rather say it to them yourself. I’m gonna call and say that you’re awake.”
With that, he exited the room. I leaned back on my pillows, sighing heavily. How was I going to tell my folks about it, how would they take it. And Y/N, oh god, she’s never going to stay with me, which sane girl would stay with a cripple ? I hadn’t the time to think about it because the nurse came back with another woman who was certainly the said-doctor.
“Glad to see that you’re back to us, Sergeant Barnes. I’m doctor Helen Cho, from the US Army”, she introduced herself. “I’m gonna examine your arm, I need to see how the wound heals”, she lifted my sleeve and removed the bandage from the stump. “It’s really clear and it seems to heal well. I’ll have to take a look at the scars on your chest too. That bomb hit you pretty badly.”
The nurse helped her to remove the hospital gown and I saw what lied underneath.
“This is really good”, Doctor Cho said, while looking closely. “You’re healing really well. You’re going back home really soon. I managed to make you enter a program I’m supervising, it’s a program which will give you a prosthetic arm. Did you call your family back there to say you were awake ? Your girlfriend ?”
“My friend, Captain Steve Rogers, is calling them right now. How do you know that I have a girlfriend ?”, I asked, confused.
“You said a girl’s name, Y/N, during your sleep once when I came and check on you, Captain Rogers said she was your girlfriend. She’s gonna be relieved when she’ll know that you’re awake and fine.”
“Yeah, I’m really fine, I’m missing an arm, but I’m fine…”, I mumbled.
“Don’t worry Sergeant, as soon as you have a foot on the US soil, you’ll be taken care of my program and given a brand-new arm and your life will be as it was before, except that you’ll be off the army. Congratulations Sergeant Barnes, that wound makes a free man of you. Rest a little and in less than a week, you’ll be back home.”
With those words, she left the room, the nurse on her heels.
She didn’t lie, four days later, I was on a plane, on the way back home, Steve next to me. I was wearing a loose hoodie to hide my stump. During the time I was in the military hospital my hair grew and so did my stubble. I’m unrecognizable, I don’t look like the man that left anymore. I’m someone else. I’ve seen so much during those last few months, in addition of my missing arm, and I wasn’t a fool, I knew at the moment that the only thing that made me sleep well were the medications I took for my injuries. When the plane landed, I asked Steve if we could wait to be the last to go out, I didn’t want to blend in with the crowd, I wanted to go outside, quietly, without anyone to look at me. He accepted and asked one of the air hostess if it was possible. She answered that it was, and we looked at the plane becoming slowly empty.
“Ready ?”, Steve asked when every soul were out.
“What if I say no, will I be allowed to stay here forever ?”
“I don’t think so Buck. It’s your decision. But I know a bunch of people that would be disappointed and worrier if you don’t get your ass out of that plane. One of them especially”, he said.
“Y/N”, I whispered.
“Y/N indeed”, he repeated. “I know your folks are impatient to see you too. Your mom says it’s not good for you to be alone and withdrawn. She says no one is going to let you down.”
Steve got up and thanked the air hostess before I did too and put my hood on my head, nodding to the girl who sadly smiled at me. When we passed the terminal door, my whole family, plus Peggy, Y/N and Logan stood there. My father got my luggage back, and he was standing aside with Logan. Steve passed by me and ran to Peggy and took her in his arms, before kissing her lips passionately.
“I missed you, I missed you so much”, she said, between kisses.
I paused before continuing to walk, my backpack on my right shoulder, hanging from my back. I looked around and saw my family. In the middle of the way, Y/N was standing there, still, tears in her eyes. I hesitated, but she didn’t, she started to walk straight to me and suddenly ran towards me, she threw her arms around my neck and I managed to stay steady despite our two weights. She buried her face in the crook of my neck and cried.
“I was so afraid that you didn’t come back.”
“I’m here now.”
“And I’m never gonna let you go again.”
I put her down on the ground and kissed her softly. I took her hand and we walked to mt family. My sisters and mother were crying too, my father just hugged me and Logan just nodded, but when I saw his eyes that he has been worried too, maybe more for his daughter than for me, but still worried.
During the next month, I received the papers from doctor Cho’s program and even if I wasn’t really into it, Y/N insisted for me to have that intervention and take advantage of the free program, even if it was only at it’s beginning. I had physical tests, psychological ones too, the doctors said I better find a shrink in New York. My sleep was less good without the med, but I figured it out that having my girlfriend’s hot body sleeping next to me helped soothe me, despite the nightmares. After another month of test and appointment at the therapist, I was admitted in the program. Y/N took her vacations and came with me and in less time than I realized, I had a brand-new arm, metal one. I wasn’t armless anymore, but still so damaged.
After that, our lives went back to normal. I get used to my new arm, went to the shrink three times a week, started to work as a geography teacher in a junior high. And then there we were, five months ago.
One night after work, I was looking at the little velvet black box, containing a beautiful engagement right, I bought a few days before, in secret, that was hiding in my work backpack. I planned to ask Y/N to marry me Saturday night, I booked a table at the restaurant where we had our first date, and ordered for that night all her favorite meals. I heard the door opening, earlier than usual, and I ran to hide the box in my stuff.
“Hey doll, you’re here earlier tonight”, I said, going to her and kissing her lips. “You look sick and tired.”
“I felt bad today during the rehearsal. I have been nauseous, I wanted to throw up and I even faint. And you know Katie, she insisted for me to see a doctor, so she sent me to the hospital with Sharon and there they asked me a bunch of questions, take a sample of blood and did a test.”
“What’s going on ? Nothing serious ? Please, tell me, you’re stressing me right now doll.”
“I’m pregnant James”, she softly answered.
“Oh so that’s… What ?! Like… Like really ? We’re pregnant ?! We’re having a baby ?!”
“Yes, James we’re having a baby.”
“Oh my god, I love you so much”, I took her in my arms and started spinning with her in my arms. “Wait, I’m… I’m coming back !”
I put her down and ran to the bedroom, to pick up the ring in the pocket of my jacket. I came back in the room as fast as I left. Once in front of her, I put one knee down and look up to her, in those beautiful Y/E/C eyes.
“Y/N”, I breathed heavily, “for five years now you’re illuminating my life, I never thought that I would fall in love so quickly of someone who would take all of me, even after I lost an arm and had night terrors and PTSD, but you’re still here, and now, we have a little one on the way. I was supposed to do this on Saturday night but, I think I can’t wait, so… Y/N Howlett, will you do the honor of becoming my wife ?”
“Yes, yes, a thousand time yes !!!”, she nearly screamed knocking me down on the floor, peppering my face with kisses.
After that, we had a quiet night, having dinner and cuddling on the couch, absentmindedly watching TV.
“What do you think about Kayla if it’s a girl”, I stated, rubbing her not yet showing baby bump with my right hand.
“Kayla ? As my mom ?”, she asked.
“Yeah, as your mom”, I answered tightening my grip around her. “That would be a tribute to her. Except if your dad doesn’t agree with it.”
“I’m sure he would appreciate”, she answered, pecking the top of my nose.
The next day, we threw a little party with our respective parents and close friends, to announce them the two news. Everyone congratulated us, Logan a little smile dancing on his lips, he seems so proud and happy.
And then, it happened, four days ago, I don’t really know how it happened. I had trouble sleeping. I was turning over and over again. Suddenly, I felt a soft hand on my arm and someone was shaking me.
“Bucky, wake up. Baby, wake up, it’s just a bad dream. Nothing is real, it’s a nightmare. Bucky baby wake up”, Y/N’s voice was trying to sooth me.
I don’t know how it happened, but my left hand grabbed her throat and my fingers closed in on her skin.
“Bucky, stop it, it’s me”, she tried to say out of breath, but I didn’t hear her, still in my nightmare.
Her hands tried to push me away, but she didn’t manage to, I’m too strong and heavy.
“Bucky please”, she whispered one last time before her strength gave up.
My eyes shot up open and I saw her, barely breathing.
“Y/N, doll, say something.”
I shook her but she didn’t answer. Grabbing my phone, I called 911.
“911, what’s your emergency ?”
“I’m James Barnes, and I live at the 384 Bridge Street. It’s my fiancée, she… I had a crisis during my sleep and I strangled her. It… It was an accident, I’m a veteran and I have a PTSD, I didn’t know what I was doing. I…”
“Sir, sir, calm down”, the woman on the other side said. “Is she breathing ?”
“Yes, but, hardly”, I answered, tears falling from my eyes.
“Don’t worry mister Barnes, an ambulance is on its way to your home.”
I don’t know how much time passed in between the moment I hang up and the moment someone knocked the door. Two ambulance men dressed in their white uniforms came in with a stretcher. I showed them the way to the bedroom, and they took Y/N with them to the nearest hospital and let me sit next to her in the ambulance.
Once at the hospital, she was taken in charge by a doctor named Bruce Banner. He treated Y/N and intubated her to help the air in her lungs, saying the tube was there to help her breath normally again and that he would remove it in one or two days because she would be able to breathe by herself. He asked me how it happened, and I explained him everything.
“Don’t worry, this is not your fault mister Barnes. I know what PTSD is. I’ve treated many patients having it, my best friend was kidnapped by terrorists, and he has it too. I perfectly understand that it’s not your fault, James”, he said with a paternalistic tone, putting his hand on my shoulder, “I know it’s not. Did you let her family know ?”
“Her father, I… I have to call him”, I answered, remembering that I didn’t tell Logan yet, I was so panicked that I completely forgot about telling him that his only daughter was at the hospital, and moreover that she was because of me.
“Give me his number, I’m gonna call him. We transferred miss Howlett in her room, just go with her.”
I complied, I had nothing else to do after all. I must have fall asleep holding Y/N’s hand, because the next thing I remember is someone shaking me. When I opened my eyes and raised my head, Logan was standing there rage deforming his features.
“What happened”, he growled. “I wanna know, right here, right now what happened”, he demanded.
Without giving me a second to answer, he caught me by my collar and lifted me up.
“It’s an accident, I swear. I had a nightmare Logan. And you more than anyone must know what a PTSD is.”
He let me go, almost regretting his behavior.
“I’m sorry, and you’re right, I indeed know what is it.”
He sat on the other side of the bed, taking his daughter’s other hand and started waiting with me.
The next day, doctor Banner came and removed the intubation, saying Y/N was out of danger and that she would wake up, it was only a matter of days.
And that’s how it led to today and me keeping bringing all of this up. Logan left a few minutes ago to breathe some fresh air, and he’s probably smoking a cigar right now and Steve came to have some news. I’ve been thinking about what to do and already made up my mind.
“I’m gonna leave her as soon as she’s awake.”
“You can’t do that Buck, she loves you. She loves you more than anything in that world”, Steve states, his gaze traveling from Y/N’s motionless form to me.
“A monster like me doesn’t deserve to be loved”, I say calmly.
“Do you hear yourself ? Do you really think that if you really were a monster she would agree to marry you ? Do you really think that she would have want to have a baby with you ? Jeez, Bucky, how can you be so stupid ?!”
“I ruin everything I touch. How could she even thought that I was or could be the prince she dreamed of.”
“This is so stupid Buck, you’re not gonna abandon her and your baby to come. How do you think she’s gonna react when you’re going to tell her that you leave her ?”
“I’m gonna leave before she wakes up”, I end the conversation before Steve can say something else.
By the end of the day, Logan leaves again after telling me that he will come back tomorrow. That’s the moment I have to leave, tonight, while nobody else is here. It’s cruel, but it’s gonna be crueler if I stay and put Y/N in danger again and our baby too. It might seem selfish but I have to. I go down in the hospital shop, buy a card and flowers. I write my goodbyes on the card and put it next to her bed.
“I’m sorry my love, but I have to do this”, I say, putting down a kiss on her forehead, and rubbing her baby bump where the baby kicks when my hand touches the little bulge it makes.
“James, James”, Y/N’s voice came like a croak.
“Listen to me doll. I’m gonna let you go, I better let you go. I better set you free and give you up to find the prince you thought I was.”
Without saying another word and looking one last time, I go through the door and walk towards the hospital’s exit, and disappear into the night.

Top Ten Comic Characters of All Time (according to me)
Introduction/disclaimer:
This list is mine and is based on my personal and subjective criteria. My choices are based on what I have read in comics as opposed to other media. For instance, one of my favorite superheroes, Squirrel Girl, is not on this list because I have read next to none of her comics and my love of the character is based almost exclusively on her concept and her appearances in other media.
Also, some people might want to fault me and my list for a lack of “inclusiveness” or “representation” or whatever. Full disclosure: I’m a straight white dude and I tend to relate most to the straight white dude characters that have historically dominated the comics world. Thus, I’m more likely to be drawn to stories about those characters. I do not apologize for my tastes. If they radically differ from yours, feel free to make your own list and tell me why you like the characters you like. That would be awesome.
Finally, there are half a dozen characters outside this Top Ten that could jump into it at any moment. This list represents my Top Ten at the time I wrote this and is subject to change.
Still with me? Cool! Here we go!
 10. Wolverine
Most people would put Logan aka James Howlett aka the Wolverine much higher on their lists, and I completely understand why. He is “the best he is at what he does” ™ and is one of the most complex and interesting characters in comics. He also, until his death a couple of years ago, was perhaps the most overexposed character in all of comics. He’s a down to earth guy who mostly just wants to be left alone, but neither the comic world nor the comic industry is willing to give him a break. With a cool and dark backstory and super cool powers, he’s one of the legitimate badasses in the Marvel universe.
9. Blue Beetle/Jaime Reyes
“What is this blasphemy?! Jaime Reyes ranked higher than Mr. Snikt?!” Yes. This is my list and I say Jaime gets a higher spot.
Hear me out on this. Beetle gets this spot on my list mainly due to his introductory arc during DC’s “One Year Later” event and his recent “Rebirth” run. Both runs are well written with great character interaction and dialogue. Jaime’s just a regular high school kid who also happens to be a superhero. Not the most original concept (*cough* Spider-Man! *cough*) but he pulls it off in what feels like a fresh way. It also doesn’t hurt that he was a show stealer in his recurring role in the “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” cartoon a few years ago. But his comics just shine to me.
8. Batman
More controversy! Batman is only at number 8! I realize most people place him much higher because he’s one of the more relatable members of DC’s top-flight heroes in that he’s just a man in a world of gods. For me, he suffers from the same kind of overexposure that Wolverine has had over the years. I also don’t tend to find him as interesting as the characters he deals with, whether his allies or his rogues' gallery. He’s a darker, more brooding Iron Man (I realize Batman came first, but I think the comparison is still valid). I find him at his best when he’s forced to play with others, especially Superman, because the tension between the “solitary crimefighter” and the “super team” dynamics can be so fun. Recommended reading includes the Justice miniseries by Alex Ross and Co. and the Justice League: Lightning Saga story arc.
7. Captain Marvel/Shazam!
For the five of you that are still reading, this entry might be the last straw. Bear with me. Batman is the dark, brooding hero of the night. Captain Marvel (or Shazam for those willing to give up the ghost of Fawcett Comics) is the polar opposite of that: he is bright, colorful, and full of whimsy. Whimsy and wonder are both things that are in short supply in this post-Watchmen comics world, and that’s a shame. It’s that harkening back to the core of how comics began that is a large part of his appeal to me. Interestingly enough, it’s a couple of his more recent stories that have made me love him as a character. Jeff Smith, of Bone fame, wrote an origin miniseries for Captain Marvel called Shazam and the Monster Society of Evil and it’s wonderful. Also recommended is his part in the previously mentioned Justice series.
6. Captain America
This is a more conventional pick. Cap makes this list for similar reasons to the previous Captain on this list: he represents the values and sentiments of a bygone age. In particular, his refusal to compromise his beliefs regardless of the personal cost is a breath of fresh air and too seldom seen anymore. Leader, soldier, champion of liberty, that’s Cap. Look up his run in the New Avengers series up through the Civil War arc to see exactly what I’m talking about.
Also, Hydra Cap never happened. Just no.
5. Joker
You know how the last two choices were upstanding, almost squeaky-clean citizens?
              Yeah, good times.
For someone completely different, Number Five gives us the Joker. He is, bar none, the most fascinating supervillain ever, responsible for some of the most twisted moments in mainstream comics. Jason Todd? That was the Joker. Barbara Gordon? Yep, that was him, too. Harley Quinn? Mistah J says, “You’re welcome.” The Joker is sick, twisted, and downright evil, and he embraces it like no other. Sometimes, a villain isn’t misunderstood; sometimes a villain is just a villain. And the Joker does “villain” with a style all his own. Required reading includes the Justice series (can you tell I like this series? I do.), the Dark Knight Returns, and, of course, The Killing Joke.
4. Superman
Honestly, I thought Supes would be higher on my list. He’s the first superhero and still, to me at least, one of the best. I realize most folks find him to be too powerful to be relatable, and there’s no small amount of validity to that point. But the best part of this character isn’t his ability to punch planets out of orbit or “leap tall buildings” or any of that. It’s his... well, his character. That middle-America farmer’s son upbringing, with its sense of right and wrong that has so seldom failed him, is what makes Superman more than just the Last Son of Krypton. To borrow from Kingdom Come, it’s the “man” more than the “super” that makes him special. It’s what makes him a symbol of virtue and excellence, a standard to which we can aspire. It’s Clark Kent, rather than Kal-El, that I want to be like. Some good reading includes the aforementioned Kingdom Come, The Superman/Batman Supergirl arc (this is actually a good Batman read, as well) and, you guessed it, Justice.
3. Hellboy
Sadly, this is the only non-Big-Two character on my list. For now. I’m just starting to branch out so future lists might have more.
Anyway, Hellboy makes the list because he isn’t what you’d expect him to be. The son of a major league demon and destined to bring about the apocalypse, he should be an earth-shattering villain. But he’s a hero because of his upbringing by a paranormal expert. Nurture triumphing over Nature. The monster as the hero. Also, he’s just a fun character and his stories are good stuff. Of particular note, mainly because this is what I’ve read, is the recent Hellboy and the BPRD 1950s series.
2. Rocket Raccoon
If you’ve read this far, this pick really shouldn’t surprise you. Sometimes, we want heroes to inspire us to be better people.  Sometimes, we just want a raccoon with a big flarkkin’ gun. Rocket’s recent string of short series, both solo and with Groot, are just fun reading.
1. Hulk
This was the one pick I didn’t need to think about; Hulk was at Number One from the start. The concept of a super smart guy who turns into a raging monster when he loses his cool resonates with me on an intensely personal level. While he has had quite a few strange turns in his comics history, the big guy really came into his own during the Planet Hulk series, where he was shot into space by his best “friends” to a planet full of enemies and dangers that only the Hulk could survive. His development from monster to gladiator to fugitive to king, and then to vengeful conqueror in the following World War Hulk, is one of my favorite arcs in all of comics. Whether big and kind of dumb or big and super smart or somewhere in between like in the stories I’ve mentioned, Hulk is my Number One comic character of all time. At least until the next time.
So, that’s my list. But what’s a list like this without some honorable mentions?
Honorable Mentions:
12. Rorschach
This is the obligatory Watchmen pick. While I don’t like the story, I appreciate the historical impact it’s had on the comics industry. Rorschach is the only character that I can call anything close to a “good guy” despite his extreme homicidal tendencies. His refusal to go along with the alien invasion story covering Ozymandias’s murder of millions of people “so billions might live”, his refusal to accept the lesser evil, shows an integrity that is perhaps outdated but no less laudable for being outdated.
13. Renee Montoya/the Question
The first woman on this list and it’s neither Wonder Woman nor fan-favorite Kitty Pryde. Renee Montoya is, to me, a more interesting character than either, mostly because she’s very flawed. She’s rough around the edges; she drinks to excess; she has doubts about her abilities and her value as a detective. I gather most of this info from her run in DC’s 52 series, which is a great read on its own.
16. Lex Luthor
               This guy.
               This guy right here.
He’s the stereotypical “evil businessman” and yet he is so much more. A legit genius who inevitably uses that genius to fight petty grudges rather than help humanity reach claims potential like he claims to care about. Kingdom Come, Justice, you know the drill.
19. Iron Man
Some characters combine seriously cool abilities with personalities that are seriously hard to like. Iron Man is cool; Tony Stark is just an egomaniacal jerk. It’s also worth noting that Tony often has to use Iron Man (and the Avengers) to fix problems of his own making. He’s a great character, but he’s not a good one.
25. Deadpool
Because Wade was going to kill me if I didn’t put him somewhere on this list.
Seriously. He’s standing right next to me while I’m writing this.
              Help me.
30. Death of the Endless
I’ve honestly only read one issue featuring Death, Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, #8. But that one issue is probably my favorite single comic issue ever. It’s stark, poignant, and beautiful. My list had 29 characters and I immediately thought of her for Number Thirty, but I’m sure she’ll move higher if I ever read any more of her stories.
Well, that’s all for now. I hope you enjoyed this strange trip through my comic book preferences. For real, to all who’ve gotten this far, I’d love to read your Top Ten. I find the reasons why different people like different characters fascinating.
              Till next time, cheers, y’all!

I'm intrigued. Can I get more info on Esther and Logan meeting in your fic?
1960s
Though neither remembers; the first time their paths cross is in a dingy little bar called Marv’s in the outskirts of New Orleans. Recruiting for the CIA’s mutant division, she watches as Erik and Charles approach the man sitting at the bar from her distracted spot at the jukebox. Their introduction going as far as their own names before being declined with a distinct and curt, “Go fuck yourselves.”
Esther bites her lip to keep from giving Charles a smug grin as he and Erik walk past her and out the door with tails tucked between their legs. Esther selects Elvis Presley’s ‘It’s Now or Never’ before following behind. The sudden change in his usually quite bar draws Logan’s attention and his body turns itself towards the intrusion, catching only a glimpse of long dark hair and bright green turtleneck.
“He seemed nice.” is the closest he gets to an introduction as the door closes behind her. Logan returns to his drink, throwing back the whiskey and not giving the melodic voice a second thought.
1970s
It’s not till roughly a decade later they exchange names. Having been ambushed by Stryker’s team on a home visit, Esther’s memories of the Cuban disaster are erased by his own powerful mutant son, and instead a false memory of recruiting for the Army has taken its place. Logan Howlett and his brother Victor Creed are spared from their court martial execution in Vietnam by the team. While Creed is interested in the promise of blood, power, and money, Logan is interested in something else. A beautiful woman with kind green eyes, a delicate touch, and a aura of calm too out of place in their dangerous line of work.
“Hi, I’m Esther.” Are the three words that seal their fate. She’s beautiful. The layer of sweat on her skin, the hair that slips from her ponytail, and the almost bashful smile on her lips will be parts a memory that never leaves him.
On instinct, the man who felt he could never be caged, is suddenly willing to follow her anywhere. “Call me Logan.”
They build a partnership that leads to a romance as they break away from the corruption of Stryker’s team and run away to a place in the trees in a forest on a mountain. They are happy. Until they are found….
2000s
Having been rescued by Charles after the Three Mile Island incident, Esther’s memory is misplaced and shattered. Charles, only knowing what happened before she was taken and when she was found can do little for her. She recalls love, and fear, and the sound of her feral scream at the sound of a  bullet entering the ma’s  skull. She was loved, and it was taken from her. An emotional being, she does not want to be swallowed by grief and refused Charles offer to help her recall.
Likewise, in the Alaskan wilderness, Logan Howlett feels himself missing a part of him that he can not recall, bullets to the brain tend to do that. A blurry photograph and the haunting sound of a scream is all he has. He picks up a young mutant girl by the name of Rouge, spurred by a voice in the back of his head saying she needed to be helped. Attacked on the road shortly after, he is nearly defeated before being saved by the X Men sent to collect her. When he awakens, he respond to the possible threat and tries to run from the medical facility only to find it’s functioning, and crowded, boarding school. A voice, distinct and familiar leads him through the halls as he tries to follow it. Startled by his own racing heart he throws open the nearest door and interrupts a classroom.
“Kitty, fetch Miss Sinclair.” Charles tries to placate him by introducing the other x men that have saved him, but it’s not until Esther, the house mother, enters that he relaxes his aggravated posture. There is a hum of familiarity that lingers between them, though neither one can place it.
“Esther.” She holds out a hand to him, a brisk introduction since Charles has no doubt mentioned her.
“Logan.” He gives back. It is the only introduction in which his hand extends to meet hers. When told it is she that will be giving the tour, he abandons the urges to flee and agrees. He’d still follow her anywhere.
2020s / time travel 1980s.
When the rumors of war became a reality, the X Men are always on the front lines. Esther, always the protector, dies early in the war while attempting to flee with mutant children. Logan, consumed by grief, jumps at the chance to go back in time and change their fate. In the past of 1980 Charles doesn’t have the honor of introducing them as she arrives home. There in the mansion they once called home she stands: the only hope this world has left. He is breathless, aching, and speechless sans one word. “Esther.”
Confused but calm, she smiles brightly at the disheveled handsome man. “Have we met?”
Logan’s harsh face is softened by the gleam in his awestruck eyes. “Once or twice…”
