This is the outline for a fic that's been decaying in my docs since November. Hopefully I will write it eventually because the idea is still so vivid in my head! Many a time has he marched himself into the office of the higher-ups and asked them to check that there wasn't some mix-up, that they had gotten his name right, but the answer was always the same. Fate is as fate does.

One day, a file passes over his desk that makes him laugh. This is a case where every relationship has failed, and Cupid himself has marked it as urgent for matching, as this person clearly can not find anyone right for them in the slightest. He tracks you down, finding you on a busy street, which is a time saver for Taehyun, because he can take his pick of any person in the vicinity, shoot, and his job is done. Except, it's not that easy, because as soon as you see him knocking his arrow and declaring your name, you start to refuse, stirring up quite a scene. Taehyun is more annoyed, because this task is taking longer than it should, so he turns and lets his arrow fly towards the first sucker his eyes land on. And though the target—Choi Beomgyu, who was planning on being an eternal bachelor, you learn later—tries to run, Cupid's arrow never misses.

Now he has two unhappy clients, and you both take up complaints with the Order, leading to an investigation into his work performance and uncovering his less than ethical matchmaking methods. See, he hasn't really been going to the lengths of research that he's supposed to—looking into both individual's backgrounds, interests and preferences, life aspirations—he's more of a point and shoot kind of guy. Turns out most of the couples he sticks together are miserable.

The only way out of this mess for Taehyun? For his latest match to be a true one. In short, you and Beomgyu have to fall in love.

Birthday greetings to the living music legend of the Hindi film industry, Sri #Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma (03/09).

That is a point. But I'm also including stuff like things that happen in Digimon Data Squad/Savers and Ghost Game where mons latch onto kids and do terrible terrible things either b/c they think it would help, or they miss understood what the kid wanted, or the kid's emotion drove the digi mad.

Like if its a deity assigned partner digi, things might be rough but it could ultimately help. But if its a wild digi just latching onto a kid ala Tamers/Savers/Ghost Game it could go really really rally bad for everyone in a five mile radius.

The same reason why Laios is a Digimon kinda guy is why I personally can't do a Digimon/Dungeon Meshi crossover. At least not one that involves kid Laios. Like, I know enough about Digimon to have a good idea of the kind of carnage that could happen if a digimon bonded with a deeply upset hurting and angry kid.

Like, he wouldn't even have to ask his mon to do anything. It'd pick up on his feelings and/or subconscious desires and do what it thinks he wants or what it thinks would make him happy.

The Winged Lion has a lot of digimon vibes to it. As in the type of digimon that wants to manipulate its bonded as a source of fuel to achieve its own ends.

Save your fic, skip the indentation.

Indentation may be necessary in a high school essay but on Archive of Our Own, indentation can make the reading experience unpleasant, especially if your paragraphs tend to be shorter. 

When it comes to line alignment, go left. 

While making your text justified may look best at first, it is hard on the eyes to read for longer stretches of time (especially when late at night—which is when most people tend to read fanfic!) So, for the sake of your reader, consider using left alignment.

Use quotation marks, it’s in the name. 

Even though it may be super obvious and easy to some, formatting dialogue into your fic can be tricky; let me save you some time. Indicate what is being spoken by bracketing it with quotation marks (these guys → “”) and refrain from using any other method, especially italics. 

Shut up, I’m thinking (not talking) 

So what do I use italics for? Glad you asked: Italics are typically used to demonstrate a character’s thoughts or emphasize a word or statement. Additionally, you may want to italicize a quote, song lyric, etc. Really, feel free to italicize anything you want, except, of course, dialogue.

Meet your new soulmate, horizontal lines. 

No longer are the days of thirty identical emojis and “POV SWITCH” spelled out in bold in the middle of a fic. If you are cutting to a new scene or switching points of view, just insert a horizontal line and call it a day. 

Quantity ≠ Quality

Having more chapters may seem more appealing on the surface, but having to press the next chapter button every minute can be a major deterrent for readers, especially those who use ao3 on their phone. Thus, if you have a 20k fic ready to go, think about splitting that baby into ten chapters instead of twenty. Remember, ao3 does not have a sort by chapter number option—only word count. 

Yeah, yeah, it’s summary time

Man, summaries can be confusing to navigate no matter if this is your first or fifth fic. Here are a couple things you should not do when writing your summary. 

Writing the word “summary” in the summary

Putting a really long author's note in the summary 

Saying “this is really bad” or “this is my first fic” and the like. (they can go in the end notes if you really want to tell your readers, but also, be confident!)

The same goes for “please give kudos and comment” and “please read” 

Having a “explainer” summary. 

An example of a explainer summary would be saying something like, “this is basically my take on what i think happened after [blank] because [blank] broke my heart and sucked. [blank] essentially is sad when [blank]  breaks up with [blank] so they gets revenge and starts a ~relationship~ with [blank]” 

Having a really long summary. At most a summary should be 8-10 sentences but I would aim for shorter.

The rich text option on ao3 is a life saver and I highly recommend you take advantage of it. Not only is much more user-friendly, but when copying and pasting your fic, the line spacing won’t come out all wonky like it does when you copy and paste into the html box. 

On Tagging

Tagging on ao3 is one of those things that, like summaries, seems daunting at first but is actually pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Now, I feel it would be best for me to explain tagging in another post as there’s a lot to cover and this post is already pretty long, so look out for that in the next couple of days.

waking up next to nishinoya yuu isn’t filled with excitement or him jumping off the walls, like you might expect it to be. i feel like the first ten minutesof waking up for him are really slow, like he’s just barely opening his eyes and looking at the ceiling.

for some reason i really feel like he wakes up before you. he goes to bed at like two am, but wakes up at eight am to practice or go on a little jog. 

but every time he wakes up, the first thing he looks at is you. your peaceful state, your slow-rising chest, the little breaths leaving your slightly parted lips. noya is a really emotional person, and I can bet you real money that he gets real giddy seeing you next to him.

you don’t usually sleep in his arms because he’s a wild sleeper and probably starfishes, so when he wakes up his limbs are sprawled out, some on you, some hanging off the bed. and he just barely turns his head at there you are in your morning glory. 

his heart literally swells five sizes bigger. he’ll shift over to be next to you and move your hair out of your face or just mess with the hair at the top of your head, basking in the love you cause him to feel.

after a few minutes of doing that, he’ll let out a big ol’ sigh and wrap his arms around you, squeezing tight to wake you up.

“mmm,,,,noya, what are you doing,,,” “i’m just feeling grateful :)” 

and you look up at him, and there’s a feeling of security that fills you. he may not be the biggest or strongest, but the light in his eyes and the warmth in his arms that he wraps around you make you feel safe.

you giggle and caress his chest with your hand, happy that he wakes you up like a queen everyday. trust me, he’s happy he gets to be the guy whose face you see first thing in the morning

he usually scrolls through his phone for like an hour before getting out of bed, and you just sit there and watch tik toks with him. you two my wake up at roughly the same time, but you get out of bed before him to make some morning smoothies (he totally asks for a protein shake AGAGA)

not gonna lie, when he wakes up he spend like a minute or two in bed at MOST, he hates just staying in bed because he feels like he could so much more productive than lie around and do nothing. you, on the other hand, wouldn’t mind staying in bed for the entire day. 

so here’s the way it usually goes: he wakes up a minute before his alarm (7:00am) and just quickly sighs before reaching over you and turning it off so it doesn’t wake you up. then he kisses your forehead (his breath smells bad, so he’s not going to kiss your lips) before getting up and washing up. he gets ready to go on a jog, and he kisses your shoulder before he sets out on his journey.

but every once in a while, there’s something wonderful that happens. he doesn’t feel like working out. he wakes up at the same time, but he just doesn’t feel like doing anything. on those days, he completely indulges in your warmth.

he doesn’t care if he wakes you up and hoists you up so you’re completely laying on his body. of course you wake up, but you already know what’s going to happen, so you just softly groan. “so you don’t feel like getting up and decide to wake me up? really?” “yes, really” “...you’re lucky i love you” “im the luckiest man alive”

every morning, without fail, he wakes up first and somehow slip out of your position and into the bathroom to wash his face and brush his teeth before making two cups of coffee and coming back into the bedroom, setting them on the nightstand, and crawling back into bed with you

usually he sits up in bed and moves you to rest your head in his lap so he can reach over to sip at his drink. his hands comb through your hair and he trifles through his emails just incase some parent messages him about something

sometimes he’ll stop scrolling at look down at you, feeling happy and 100% sure that he has the greatest life; first he wakes up in your arms, spends time with you, spends time with kids, and them spends more time with you 

the school he teaches at starts at like twelve pm, so he likes to take his time waking up so he’s as happy as possible. and spending a lot of time with you is key to that.

can only wait for so long before he pokes your side until you wake up. the entire time he’s like “please wake up” “i’ve got work in like four hours! let’s do something!” “i’ll make breakfast if you give me sufficient payment ;)” 

literally the second you wake up he props you up and you look drunk as hell when you first wake up but he still thinks you’re beautiful <3 cute rat

How would you describe the relationship between each respective goggleboy and 'rival'? Ive seen different interpretations but im curious what you think! Not to mention that the fans are sometimes arguing over who the 'rival' actually is, like with Daisuke where some people say its Ken and others say its Takeru. (I dont think there are actual rivals in the show, except for maybe Manga!Kiriha who outright says he will be just that with Taiki.)

One thing to keep in mind is that the word "rival" has kind of integrated itself into anime lingo as a full-on English loanword, so it comes from expectations of anime tropes more than anything. While even official staff has used that word in talking about Digimon, as you say, it never really fit to begin with, because not only has Digimon TV anime never been a particularly conventional shounen series in many ways, that term was also mostly coined in light of series where that term made a lot more sense. As in, they were more likely to be actually competing over something (in sports, or something tournament-based like card games); in that sense, a "rival" would be someone who might be antagonistic by being on the other side of the field, but would have a mutually positive relationship with the other person overall because the competitiveness would keep both of them on their toes and allow both of them to improve together. Digimon is not the first time this term has started getting overapplied to contexts where it doesn't really fit at all (it's been going on in Super Sentai for years), so people generally have a greater perception of it broadly meaning "two characters who have differing opinions on how something should be done due to their differing personalities, and sometimes fight over it", but in Digimon especially, it really does seem like trying to smash a square peg into a round hole.

The short answer: Xros Wars is probably the only one you can make a real argument for.

The long answer, in detail:

Adventure: I cannot emphasize enough that Adventure, being a series that was really big on that whole trope subversion thing, is a series that casts the trope of "rivalry" as "getting in a lot of fights" as a bad thing -- it's actually pretty unsubtle about it, because the word "rival" itself is explicitly used in Adventure episode 44, by Jureimon trying to manipulate Yamato. Or, in other words, "hey, if you saw someone who's supposed to be your supportive friend as someone you had to constantly compete against for no good reason, wouldn't that be really messed up?" Adventure does not even bother with or remotely believe in the idea that fighting somehow is a sign of how good friends you are, at least, not as long as that fighting is a sign of genuine hostility and refusal to communicate (which is why Yamato punching Taichi in 02 doesn't count). Every time Taichi and Yamato got in a fight back in Adventure, it was heated and ugly, and everyone in their presence was horrified, and once they sorted out their issues in Adventure, their appearances in 02 and Kizuna involved properly talking things out and making an active attempt to understand each other's feelings. There's a bit of bickering between them due to said opposing personalities, but it's never over anything serious (see the contrast in Kizuna between them having a bit of a minor row at the beginning, but high-fiving right after and spending the rest of the movie practically counseling each other).

02: Straight-up does not exist. Daisuke may have seen Takeru in that way due to the Hikari issue at first, but he was really running in circles getting absolutely nowhere about it, Takeru was mostly like "okay, you have fun with that," their only major argument about anything was the very serious issue in 02 episode 11, and it still resulted in Daisuke trying to understand Takeru's feelings. I think all of it boils down to Daisuke himself just not having that kind of personality to begin with, because he's friendly and supportive before anything else, and the whole thing with Takeru became a non-issue after a fashion (way before we even get into Kizuna, at that). Ken has the word "rival" sometimes applied to him in official franchise media, but nobody ever believes it. Sure, Daisuke and Ken have fairly complementary personalities, but they seem to both be aware of this fact and actively using it to help each other. It's very, very, very hard to imagine them ever getting into any kind of fight the way Taichi and Yamato used to in Adventure. It's just not happening! They're "best friends" who enjoy each other's company and actively hang out, and...yeah, that's it.

Tamers: Also does not exist! I know a lot of people really try to say it's Ruki because she's the one with the lone-wolf attitude and aggravated Takato at first, but my impression of Takato's attitude with her wasn't out of any competition but more that he'd like it if she didn't try to pick fights with him. Which she does actually stop after a while, mind you, and you could even make an argument that she's more of a foil to Jian than Takato, because Jian's the one who was completely pacifist at first, with Takato caught in the middle. In the end, Ruki never actually attains a particularly close relationship with Takato compared to Jian, nor does she really keep up a particular competitive streak with Takato; she kind of pops in and out at her leisure because of her more independent streak, and Jian ends up more of Takato's right-hand man (which is why the franchise presumably picks him as the secondary character to feature whenever they do "secondary characters"), but neither Takato nor Jian are prone to conflict and the entire trope is just fundamentally absent. The Tamers trio, is, ultimately, a trio.

Frontier: Takuya and Kouji are probably the first pair to really look like a proper execution of the trope, and at the very least they align pretty perfectly to how it's known in Sentai: a more hot-headed, aggressive lead with a more cool-headed and cynical right-hand man, where they end up often prone to conflict over dispute on how to best lead the team. However, while it's much more of a conventional execution than Adventure (since Adventure had Yamato actually be more prone to being an emotional fuse bomb whereas Taichi was often too chill more than anything), there being any conflict isn’t gone into that deeply beyond just "their personalities are complementary", and in that sense it's not far off from Adventure itself.

Savers: The series kind of baits you into thinking it might go this way when Nanami taunts Tohma about how he had to resort to a Masaru-esque tactic to beat her (it's one of its early red herrings about Tohma supposedly betraying the group), and it does have traces at the start because of how blatant of a foil Tohma is to Masaru, but one thing important to consider is that while the "rivalry" of what's being competed over is barely even relevant in most Digimon series to begin with, Masaru and Tohma don't even have a "group" to lead -- they're the employees under DATS who are being given orders from above, and are dealing with situations as they come. Masaru ends up leading the charge a bit, but he's not actually a leader in any shape or form, and Savers is more of a story of Masaru's coming-of-age than anything else, so while the series mostly has to do with his personal philosophy more than Tohma's, it ultimately lets the two of them pursue their lives their own ways. Masaru's worst bout of infamous anger is at being hurt over Tohma's apparent betrayal, not against him personally.

Xros Wars: I would say this is the only series to date where the term "rivals" properly applies, and it's because they're fighting over something concrete: the Code Crowns, and eventually Digital World territory. So in this case, for the first two parts, the answer is obviously Kiriha; Nene was a rival at first, but after various events happened she allied with Xros Heart early into Death Generals, and while Taiki and Kiriha had a relationship of mutual respect, Kiriha still considered him an opponent over what they were competing for until eventually the Xros Heart United Army fully came into formation. In the manga version, Kiriha does invoke the word "rival" in the above sense of competing to polish one's skills, but ironically, its version of the Death Generals arc involves them being much more in-tune with the same goals, so it might actually apply less because Taiki kind of responds with "uh, sure...?" since he's not nearly as interested in self-improvement. In Hunters, while it initially seems like it might be Yuu, the answer is really Ryouma, and note that Ryouma never really forms a particularly close relationship with Tagiru; it's just that he's the person most at the forefront for competing with Tagiru in the Hunt, to the point he's the first person chosen to wield the Brave Snatcher and turns out to be a bit of a foil for Tagiru in terms of actually having admired Taiki this whole time.

Appmon: Also does not exist. Rei tried to do the whole schtick in terms of competing for the Seven Code Appmon at first, but Haru was having none of that and immediately reached out to him emotionally, worrying about his welfare, and although Rei had a bit of a detached relationship with the other Appli Drivers thereafter, it really was friendly more than anything, just a bit awkward. Haru and Yuujin aren't even on the table, since their relationship is "best friends" akin to Daisuke and Ken.

Adventure: reboot: Also does not exist, considering that Taichi and Yamato bickering over the best way to approach things is limited to the very beginning of the series (and one of those times was with Yamato and Sora, not Yamato and Taichi, at that). In fact, I think most of these kids have been acting separately for most of the series anyway...?

Watching the leaves shudder with each blow, seeing how the sun hits each leaf with such uniqueness, you can feel yourself drifting further and further.

Until you’re pulled back on earth with a tap on your shoulder. “Have you chosen anyone?”

“What?” Choose what exactly?.

“For the assignment. We need to work in pairs. Have you paired up with anyone?” The boy asks again. You can see several girls sending harsh glares your way.

“Why are you asking me?”

“Most people approach me to get close to me, only for all the work to be piled up on me and you seem levelheaded enough to work in pairs.” You frown at the adjective. “And from the looks of sitting by yourself and still listening to me, I take it you don’t have one. Choose me.” He finishes speaking with a smile. It’s not like you have a better option any way.

“Sure. Let’s decide on a place to meet up afterwards and settle on which parts to work on individually.” Saying your name last, you look up to meet his gaze.

“I know.” He says. “I am Oikawa Tooru.”

You don’t expect it to go any longer than that. You don’t expect to talk to Oikawa ever again after the assignment. Yet he doesn’t leave, he keeps coming to talk, to walk by your side, sometimes to steal some of your lunch.

You don’t expect to develop a friendship with him either. Or with his friends. Yet before you can realize what’s happening, you’re already good friends with Iwaizumi, Mattsun and Makki. And before you can realize, you find yourself spending more and more of your time by their side. At school, after school, attending their practice matches and official matches.

It all develops naturally, the way he becomes a part of your life so easily. Becoming an essential element in your little world.

 The second time he says it, it’s for something silly.

Agreeing, more like being dragged, to karaoke with them, you find yourself opening up more and more. The songs are usually bad or some old pop song you have not heard of in the last decade. They’re shitty, of low quality and so delightful that you cannot find it in you to stop.

Voices going raspy after a while, it doesn’t matter.

Making funny moves while singing, it doesn’t matter how embarrassing any of you look because the moment is so warm, welcoming and alive that all you can do is for your soul to sit back and bask in the ecstasy of the moment.

“Okay the next one is a duet. Who’s up for it?” You say, looking at their weary faces, short and fast paced breathings.

“Choose me.” Oikawa says as he reaches for the second mic. It doesn’t sound like an order or a suggestion. And definitely not a question. Two confident words, fully aware you’d choose him any way.

  Spending time with the boys means spending time with the team. Getting to know each player, seeing them grow and improve, almost makes you feel proud. Being used to your presence during the matches by now, they often come up to talk to you as well.

Yet some of the older players don’t approach you much, is what you first notice.

And when you talk, it’s never too long, they seem itchy to get out of the conversation as soon as possible so you let them. It’s not like you’re dying to know them.

 Your experience with the team feels best on your third year. Having known them all, meeting new first years to adopt, to show them what ticks their respected third years off, things to do to get Mattsun and Makki’s good graces, things to make Iwaizumi proud, ways to leave Oikawa annoyed and hanging... stuff like that.

  Then you meet them. The flightless crows, the fallen birds.

With their jet black feathers and attitude, maybe a little out of sync at the practice match but captivating, almost enchanting.

You remember the last time you felt like this for volleyball, it was seeing Iwaizumi spike and Oikawa serve. You can’t help but feel like a traitor.

Sitting by the sidelines gets a little boring afterwards, so you start making small talk with the silver haired kid and their manager. They seem approachable enough.

“It’s really... a life saver that they don’t have a guy on their team who serves like kageyama.” The silver head says.

“Kageyama as in Tobio-chan, right? The stoic moody face with blue eyes?” You ask him.

“Yes, why? Do you know him?”

“No but I think you’ll regret what you just said soon enough.” With a small empathic pat on his back, you can hear the squalling of the girls already. Tooru must have arrived.

You stay in touch with the Karasuno students you met that day. It’s nice to have someone outside Aoba Johsai to talk to, about something other than volleyball once in a while. Without receiving any burning glares or threatening mutters. It’s feels something of yours only, almost like a secret. A secret you’re not so discreet about, except for the times Tooru bugs you. 

When he asks for a group hang out or study meet up and you decline for your plans with the others, which is usually just Shimizu, he gets invasive, to say the least. Attacking with never ending questions until he gets distracted or you give him a scale of information to nibble on. It gets exhausting sometimes and the look pitying Mattsun gives you doesn’t make you feel any better.

You try asking Iwaizumi about it once, as expectedly, it backfires. He tells you to talk to Tooru about it instead, clear from his face he knows more than he lets on.

  And so passes the year like this. Too fast to catch up sometimes. A mixture of success and failures, and sometimes surprises too.

Yet it feels nice, knowing it’s your last fills you with dread. Wishing for time to go slowly, even if for a second each day, anything to stay in the moment longer.

  The last time is not the third time. It’s the third time you hear those words clearly again. Yet they mean so much more than the previous times.

It’s soaking, almost like someone pours an endless bucket of water down the sky. As the rain keeps coming, the weather gets colder. The water sticking up to your clothes makes you feel colder with each passing minute, each second.

“Choose me.” Tooru says, one last time. With so much meaning carried by two simple words.

His voice lacks the usual confident tiny or the cherry tingle. It’s low, soft, small, vulnerable.

 “Choose me.” Says Oikawa Tooru and you realize it was never about the assignment or the song.

It was about the pairs, the duets. Your senpais avoiding you makes sense now. The way suddenly most girls turned against you too. How he always came up with an excuse to meet up, the curious questions about your private life.

It’s all crystal clear and you feel you should’ve seen it sooner. 

Finally, finally knowing what he meant with two simple words all this time, all these years and you want to help him as you always did, to be by his side. 

Tooru has always been with you and you with him. You can’t deny the place he has in your heart nor the importance he holds in your life. More than anything, you want to give him what he wants, what he so desperately wanted for who knows how long.

And yet you can’t, not this time.

Because this is the only time what he wants is something you can’t give. Something within you that you can’t change. A position already taken, a gap already filled.

 Both of you standing like that, face to face. Soaking wet and growing cold from the rain. The way you stand, you’re so close get so far away right now. The distance greater than you’ve ever felt.

Oikawa Tooru asks you choose him one last time but you had already chosen someone.

A brief primer to spotting fascist/imperialist dogwhistles in manga & anime, since I’m here

if it wasn’t obvious from recent posts, one of my ongoing hobbies is putting way too much time and effort into analyzing things that most people would either dismiss as ‘popcorn entertainment’ or insta-toss as being trash. recently I’ve been on a Digimon kick and I have learned so much stuff. like that everyone involved with Digimon is a huge nerd and that’s why they have multiple characters just shamelessly lifted from Chrono Trigger.

I’ve also picked up a couple things about identifying when anime writers are being imperialist chodes, so I thought I’d share some warning signs.

(note that most of these on their own are not guarantees - context matters, and one single element on its own can mean something quite different from several of these concepts working together. also, this list is not exhaustive, so make sure to use your own analysis skills on the stuff you watch & read!)

Characters having German names/culture. This is one of the less indicative, since Japanese writers have plenty of innocent reasons to enjoy the trappings of European culture, but it’s also one of the easiest to spot. If nothing else, treat it as an signal to turn on your critical reading skills for the next few chapters/episodes.

Heavy focus on the military or combat as a solution to problems. If an anime/manga acts like decisive military action is the solution to every major problem, chances are high the creator believes that in real life. As you may have noticed, real-life Japan is not exactly swarmed with enemies trying to conquer it at every turn. Japanese writers gun for the military because they want to go a-conquering. Also watch how the writer deals with the absence of military might - “we gave up our power in the past and now we’re a bunch of useless weaklings!!!” is pure imperialist rhetoric, no exceptions.

Relatedly, a mysterious aversion to dealing with the harsh consequences of war. Not the consequences of being attacked - everyone agrees those are bad - but the effects that even a “just” war has on its participants, from people being killed (or permanently traumatized) in battle to nations having to spend fucktons of money to keep the fight alive. A popular variant is when the show acknowledges this but blames the loss and devastation on the characters not going to war fast enough, or acts as if it’s all their enemies’ fault.

Focus on a “chosen one” or someone uniquely qualified to lead.  “Great Man Theory” - the idea that historical accomplishments are made by people who were born with innately ‘leaderly’ qualities - can only lead to totalitarianism. A story based on the premise that certain people rise to power because they are simply more skilled than literally everyone else is making the argument - however innocently - that some people are innately more deserving of leadership than others, and that it’s everyone else’s responsibility to follow them and make sure they can lead as much as possible (unless they got their power “illegitimately”, in which case, be sure to follow whatever qualified person inevitably appears to usurp them).

A general attitude of “the ends justify the means”. Evil (or just unlikeable) protagonists aren’t necessarily a reflection on their writers, but pay close attention to how the narrative treats them when they do horrible things. If they never cause or get into serious trouble - or, more overtly, are consistently rewarded for their actions (either directly, or through positive/necessary changes occurring as a result of their behavior), the author probably just agrees with the awful shit they’re pulling and thinks their audience should, too. (This absolutely includes characters written as villains - it’s about the actual consequences much more than the narrative framing.)

That’s all I got for you tonight. Like I said before, this isn’t exhaustive - and really, no list can take the place of actually learning about shitty political beliefs and analyzing media for yourself. You don’t have to do it for fun or even constantly - goodness knows if I worked myself into a tizzy over the political implications of Digimon Savers I’d never get any sleep - but it’s worth it to tread a little more carefully, be on the lookout for warning signs, and if you spot any, pay a little more attention to what messages the work is trying to send. ‘Cause you know, then you can tell everyone on the Internet about it and they can yell at you for ruining their favorite shows. :P

Britt's shiny team headcanons!

So... nobody asked for this, but I wanted to do it anyway since I'm happy to have completed my first shiny team for Sword and Shield.

Since I love my virtual monsters a lot, I wanted to give them some personalities and share them with you.

My team includes some pokémon that I've hatched in SwSh and shinies from previous games.

I'm currently working on making a shiny team for everyone of my favourite types, so a shiny fairy team, a shiny dragon team and a shiny poison team.

Anyways... meet my sparkly squad!

♡ Lucian

• You're never sure whether you want to pet him or punch him.

• Lucian has attitude, and he's not afraid to use it.

• He's the kind of pokémon who enjoys the company of a very small elite group of individuals, and the rest of the world is absolute garbage to him.

• On one hand, he can be extremely loyal to those he loves and will fight with all of his pretty boy might.

• On the other hand, if he finds someone to be unworthy of his time, he can be downright aggressive and rude to them.

• His facial expressions don't lie. If he finds someone disgusting, it'll show. A lot.

• Britt had a hard time fitting him in a team. She had to figure out a group of pokémon where Lucian tolerated at least 50% of them, all the while making sure that the selected group could handle him and his marvellous attitude.

• Lucian is kind of a player.

• He loves hanging out with female pokémon and is very smooth with them, but he doesn't care for hanging with the male pokémon.

• He steers clear of Red Death as Lucian has had to deal with a few Waterfalls to the face for being an annoyance.

• He doesn't mind Snuggles as the little ball of fluff is very oblivious to his surroundings.

• Lucian is mostly seen hanging out with Nully. Since Nully is genderless, Lucian doesn't see them as a potential mate or rival.

• Although, whether they're friends or not is up for debate.

• Even when he was a small Eevee, he had a superiority complex, but that doubled when he evolved into a Sylveon.

• He's, thankfully, very supportive of his trainer and will always try to hang on even in the toughest of fights. He's constantly shaking off statuses and damage as to not worry Britt.

• He loves having Britt's attention and will demand head pats at all times.

• He's difficult to get through, but with a bit of patience, he's a good boy once you know the proper approach to his odd personality.

• The rest of the team respects him, but they know how to (and will) deal with his shit when things get too hectic.

♡ Shortcake

• Big girl, gentle girl.

• She looks threatening, but she's the softest dragon you'll ever meet.

• She's very shy and has a hard time mingling with other groups of pokémon, always being on the sidelines and watching others play.

• She wants to play too, but she's so timid, so she mostly stays by pokémon she knows or Britt.

• She likes playing with smaller pokémon better because she finds larger pokémon to be frightening.

• The exception is Red Death. He's big, but Shortcake seems to like him because he's pretty calm for a Gyarados.

• She plays ball with Snuggles the Wooloo quite often. Sometimes, Snuggles is the ball.

• Unlike most dragons, Shortcake loves sweet fruity dishes over spicy meat dishes.

• Very good girl. Will lay her head in Britt's lap to nap.

• Pat that head. She loves pats.

• She lacks elegance and is very clumsy. She trips over her own feet quite often.

• She's self-conscious, so please tell her she's adorable. We need to boost that confidence.

• She's very powerful in battle, packing moves like Outrage, Swords Dance, Earthquake and Poison Jab, but she's usually the last resort pokémon. She's aware of her strength, and she doesn't want to harm others.

• When she was an Axew, she had the habit of hiding behind Britt whenever strangers approached. She's a bit too big to do that anymore, but she still does it, even if you can plainly see the huge Haxorous behind Britt.

• It's cute, really.

♡ Nully

• Nully is very wary of others and still has a hard time trusting others.

• Unless another pokémon of the team comes up to them, they don't really talk to other pokémon.

• It's not because they don't like the others! They just prefer to keep to themself. They really do respect every other pokémon on the team and will absolutely defend them with their life.

• All other pokémon of the team treat them with respect and they have become the team leader, which is a title that Nully is rather fond of.

• Nully actually likes having a cutesy nickname over having a threatening name as they want to be seen as more than just a freaky fighting machine.

• They mainly run the Poison Disk. They know how much Britt loves Poison-types, and they wanted to make her happy. They ended up really liking the Poison Disk, however, due to how many resistances they have because of it.

• When Britt is running with her shiny team, Nully likes to stay out of their Poké Ball. They always want to be by her side and make sure that she is safe.

• Nully is extremely close to Britt. After all, she saved them and gave them a better life. They have a lot of respect, love and admiration for what she did for them.

• As a Type: Null, they were very difficult. They were always cowering in a corner in a very defensive posture and wouldn't hesitate to attack if Britt got to close.

• It took a lot of patience and empathy to reach out to them, but Nully is glad that she did.

• Nully genuinely gets upset when other trainers call them a freak. It's not their fault that they were created that way.

• It's okay. Britt will fistfight anyone who insults her baby.

• Britt doesn't want to play favourites, buuuuuut... Nully ♡

♡ Dumpling

• Dumpling is more elegant than you will ever be. Deal with it.

• Seriously, she never misses a beat in whatever she's doing. She's the complete opposite of her trainer where she's absolutely not clumsy and Britt is, well... Britt.

• She acts like she's too sophisticated to battle, but no one is fooled by that. Everyone knows that she enjoys a good ass-whoopin'.

• Dumpling enjoys high-quality food and is a very picky eater. She won't accept anything lower than a Copperajah Class dish.

• Dumpling has good taste in fashion and has a very strong opinion on Britt's fashion choices. She's often out of her Poké Ball whenever Britt is shopping for some help on choosing an outfit.

• Since Britt's fashion sense is... fairly lacking, Dumpling often blows a bit of snow/ice in her trainer's face to voice her disapproval whenever she judges that the chosen outfit is ugly and/or unfit for the occasion.

• However, Dumpling and Britt are very close and share a strong girl's bond. Their bond can rival the one that Britt and Nully have.

• After all, Britt raised Dumpling from an egg, so she's practically a mother to Dumpling.

• Speaking of which, she gets along very well with Nully. She's one of the few pokémon that Nully will voluntarily speak to.

• She's often seen perched on Britt's head or on Nully's back.

• When she was a baby Snom, she used to tuck herself in Britt's pockets, but she's obviously too big for that anymore. That's why she goes for Britt's head instead, which is fine as she weighs nothing.

• She's a night owl and will often wander about at night when everyone is sleeping.

• If Britt is travelling at night, she'll follow along outside of her Poké Ball to enjoy the nighttime with her trainer.

• She's very fond of music, especially soft piano tunes.

• It doesn't come as much of a surprise that she loves a good singing voice, her cry is very melodic.

• If she was human, she'd most likely sing like an angel.

♡ Red Death

• Don't let his name fool you, he's very calm and very difficult to annoy. It really takes a lot to phase him.

• Well, unless you're battling against him, of course.

• Unlike Britt's other Gyarados (Wrath), he's very obedient and easy to control.

• Red Death and Wrath do not get along. At all. Their personalities are much too different.

• Wrath sees Red Death as a rival that he needs to dethrone, while Red Death sees Wrath as a childish brute.

• He's much more mature and wiser than a good portion of Britt's pokémon.

• He's often meditating or practicing his Dragon Dances in a lake.

• 100% has a crush on Shortcake.

• He's extremely protective of the shy dragon. He's constantly staring at her or playing with her.

• They always look so happy to be in each other's company.

• They're probably secretly together.

• He doesn't hate Lucian, but RD's patience is always on thin ice when it comes to the arrogant Sylveon.

• He's usually the one to put Lucian back in his place. A few Waterfalls never hurt anyone, right?

• Right?

• Since Gyarados are notorious for being violent, people are usually very wary around him.

• He doesn't understand why. He's calm and clearly not displaying any form of anger, so what's the issue?

• He doesn't notice that his face is naturally contorted into an expression of pure fury.

• It's okay, those who are close to him know better.

• He's a good boy who will give you piggyback rides along bodies of water and genuinely enjoys playing in the water with his trainer.

• Sometimes, he'll use his tail to splash Britt, forgetting that he's 6.5 meters long and absolutely sends her flying across the water.

• It's all in good fun though. No offence taken or harm done.

♡ Snuggles

• The baby of the group.

• Everyone loves Snuggles.

• It's impossible to dislike Snuggles.

• It's illegal to dislike him.

• Even Lucian likes him.

• Snuggles is very oblivious to his surroundings and will bump into everything whenever he's rolling around.

• He only has one brain cell that pings around his head like a windows screen saver.

• He's cute, so it's forgivable.

• He's pure and untainted by the ugliness of the world. The team wants to keep him innocent.

• He has never shown interest in evolving, so he's an overpowered level 100 ball of fluffy destruction.

• He actually loves to battle and thinks that they are very fun!

• Britt loves to use him in battle to add salt to the stinging wound of defeat.

• Not many people can keep their pride intact after being yeeted to the next century by a dopey-looking Wooloo.

• Leon still has nightmares about Snuggles.

• Loves to cuddle his trainer at night to keep her warm.

• He really is the best blanket.

• He needs to be brushed at least twice a day. Gotta keep that wool nice and shiny!

• He wears a soothe bell around his neck outside of battle but has an eviolite during battles. Bulky and friendly ball of floof!

• Don't you dare insult him!

• It's not that you'll hurt his feelings, insults fly way over his head.

• But you'll personally offend an angry short stack of a trainer, a sea serpent, a dragon, a frozen moth, a man-made fighting machine and a pretty boy.
