ahhhh now i’m just envisioning quinny’s first game as a dad, and he’s walking around the locker room with his baby girl tucked up in his arms, and she’s wearing this tiny little ‘Hughes’ jersey to match his. it’s her first game ever, and he’s just absolutely beaming. i mean, quinn’s not usually the one to soak up attention — he’s more the quiet, “let’s get to work” kind of guy — but today? oh, today he’s eating it up.

everywhere he goes, his teammates are stopping him, leaning in to coo at her, pointing out the jersey like it’s the best thing they’ve ever seen. and honestly, it kind of is. the jersey’s still a bit big on her, because, of course, the smallest size they had is still massive for a baby, but somehow that makes it even better. the sleeves are practically swallowing her little arms, and the hem is all scrunched up from where quinn has been adjusting it to make sure it doesn’t cover her too much, but he can’t stop grinning every time he looks down at her.

but the best part? every single time someone leans in to say something to her or admire her, quinn adjusts his grip on her ever so slightly. It’s subtle, but you notice it every time. the way his arms shift to hold her just a little closer, his hand gently cupping the back of her head, like he’s both showing her off and protecting her all at once. it’s instinctive, this mix of pride and caution, as if to say, look how perfect she is, but be careful — she’s mine. and she is perfect, even with the jersey drowning her, the sleeves practically covering her tiny fists. when someone points that out, quinn just grins, shaking his head like it’s the most ridiculous thing he’s ever heard.

“smallest size they had,” he says for what has to be the third time, still marveling at it, like he can’t believe his baby girl is somehow smaller than what they considered “small.”

he shifts her again when she makes a tiny noise, bouncing her lightly in his arms as she settles. the motion is so natural, so easy, like he’s been doing this his whole life. you know how much this moment means to him — how he was nervous about bringing her, about making her too much of a spectacle. but now? he’s glowing. the pride is practically radiating off him, so much so that it makes your chest ache.

and every time his teammates dote on her, he glances at you, his face softening, his eyes finding yours in a quiet moment of connection, as if to say, we made this. can you believe it? and you can’t help but smile back, because no, you can’t. not when he’s like this, so utterly in his element, so clearly her dad.

he’s walking around like he’s on top of the world, his little jersey twin in his arms, looking like the proudest dad in the universe. and honestly? hee totally is.
