Synopsis

Big things are happening in small-town Wilfred, Oregon! The retreat center is open for its first workshop, the local café is done remodeling, and librarian and witch-in-training Josie Way is hosting her sister–and a few suspicions about the new killer on the loose . . . Josie is eager to show off Wilfred’s delights to her visiting sister, Jean–even though Josie must conceal her magic from her. In any case, Jean is excited to attend Cookie Masterson’s trademark “Ready-Set-Go!” workshop on becoming a life coach. Then there’s the grand reopening of Darla’s Café, where the doors are thrown open to reveal . . . a dead man, stabbed in the back. That was definitely not on the revamped menu…

Even more worrisome, the sheriff receives a report of a fresh corpse at the retreat center. Maybe murder isn’t so uncommon in Wilfred anymore, but two unfamiliar bodies within an hour certainly is! Josie’s willing to let law enforcement take the lead–after all, she’s gotten into some trouble from the hints the library’s spellbound books keep feeding her about the patrons. But when her sister receives the killer’s chilling calling card, she’ll use everything within her otherworldly powers to divine just who in town has homicide as his new slogan . . .

My Thoughts

Once again, I’ve been completely charmed by the small town of Wilfred, Oregon and its residents, as well as another member of the Way family!

While Josie is hosting her sister Jean during a workshop, she’s hoping for a calm, quiet visit. Of course, as per usual, murder has other plans. But for once, Josie isn’t the only one nosing around – she has Jean for backup, and for a sounding board.

I honestly really enjoyed the relationship between Josie and Jean. They bicker, they disagree, and they pout at each other, but their connection is incredibly strong. They’re very in tune with each other, and a lot of that probably has to do with the magic running through their veins. Where Josie has a connection with books, and constantly seeks the truth, Jean is an inherent healer. They balance each other really well, even when they get on each others’ nerves.

Even with all the cozy overtones, there was an underlying thrum of action and suspense that kept me on my toes throughout this book. As the pieces fell into place, I always had a feeling there was something just a bit more at play. That feeling ended up being correct, and really just led to more suspense. I found I couldn’t put this book down, because I needed to know what was going to happen next.

While this book also focused far less on Josie’s friendship with Sam, their will-they-won’t-they dynamic remained intact. I like the subtle hints at a potential romance. But I also love that there’s no rush in that regard. They care for each other, and they show each other they care in small gestures and subtle actions. They’ve built a very solid foundation of friendship over the last few books, and I’m really excited to see where that goes moving forward!

I’m still as enthralled and intrigued by this series as I have always been. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next for residents of Wilfred, and their sleuthing librarian.

they’re rival crime bosses that run witch-lights carnival and Kremy dislikes them a lot, because they’re a rival but also cuz they copied his club name. Witch is in charge of the under world dealings and the transfer of credits while Light mainly entertains the patrons, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t get his hands dirty.

Light is a sith, but not the kind that destroys everything in their path and take over the galaxy, he mainly likes the power it gives him. Light also has a double bladed saber that is normally concealed in his staff, it’s red cuz sith. Witch uses blasters to fight but he also loves getting in the thick of things and getting to throw a few punched. Light still has a crush on frost and frost still has no idea, when frost came around this time he brought another tabaxi with him; Light doesn’t like him very much.

This member is Outshine, and she has a cool nail and hammer staff cause she likes nailing things onto other things...like bodies onto other bodies. Ya know, classic witch behavior.

also can i just say. its funny when you compare the two characters i play in two different campaigns and the duality of man is how on one hand i play a fallen aasimar who was the angel of love who killed another angel out of petty grievances and ill fated miscommunication and then tried to kill a god because she finally learns she no longer has to bend to the wills of others or be dictated by the emotions she feels arent hers and she can live her life as her own and is one who is a master of deciet and persuasion while still caring for those around her and being simultaneously the angel and the devil on your shoulder while being the most easily flustered and awkward creature you have ever laid eyes on.

and then on the other hand you have an awkward pretty kitty princess who apparently accidently became a repressed dirty minded woman (which im so sorry to my other group members one joke snowballed into her making "wizard jokes" another character doesnt understand) and is just sad and paranoid about her old noble family finding her all cause she owns a possessed set of dice she uses for divination who she thinks is the gods talking to her. because the dice actually talk to her. she is like if Twilight Sparkle was a cat. and talked to dice. and got driven out of her royal family she ended up in. on account for the fact she talked to dice. and because of her magic.
