writeblr intro

hey i'm chance! i've done a writeblr intro recently but i didn't like it, so this is take 2. here's the old one.

i tend to swear both on here and in my writing, so if you're sensitive to that, i don't think my blog or work is for you. i also use the word 'queer' a lot since i self-identify as such, when i do choose to self-identify.

i'm interested in so much, which would be impossible to fully state. there are so many new things out there and i love learning about them all!! this blog is mainly for writing but i'm not strict on that.

i also am pretty sure i'm neurodivergent (no diagnosis or anything yet) and tend to delve into hyper-fixations for weeks at a time. if i haven't posted for a while, it's probably because of one of my other hyper-fixations or school.

i'm going to college for my bachelor's in graphic design, which might make my responses during the school year delayed.

i'm always open to ask or tag games!! it might take me a few to respond but i'll respond.

you'll find a lot of diverse characters, the found/chosen family trope, romance or rom-com, angst, and references to actual history or historical events within my work. sometimes i throw in a little art fact since i'm an art student. in nearly every one of my works you can find a prominent lgbtq+ character, too.

i write for original works and fanfiction alike. i often alternate what project i'm writing on and tend to leave wips unfinished. there's no one specific fandom that i'm in since i tend to dabble in everything.

i enjoy reading all sorts of stories, but some of the tropes and genres that have a special place in my heart include:

Steven "Steve" Rogers wakes up in the 21st century after crashing into the ice in 1942, leaving behind his life as the mascot of the USA along with his childhood in Brooklyn NYC. The Winter Soldier, a man left behind in the war recovers his memories as the man known as James "Bucky" Buchanan Barnes after meeting Steve in the modern time. Steve and Bucky recall their childhood and their experience in the war as they recover.

Lucian is a hero who protects the city of Haines and the other members of his hero's league. They're a small-name hero just trying to make do with what they've got. A villain new to the city shows up and shakes Lucian’s perception of their own superpowers and the world.

What is one cool thing that you like about your WIP or have read about in someone else's WIP?

Hi 'Mous!

Since this is my "promote other Writeblrs" blog I'll answer for ones I've seen around (if you want me to answer for myself, feel free to send another ask to @druidx).

The 'utility artificers' in @ashen-crest's Rosemond St Series (it is technically a series now, right?). I'm a big sucker for 'high fantasy, but make it urban' (as opposed to urban fantasy's 'take IRL and give it magic' (though I do like that - but I digress)). Plus the whole setup she's got going on in that series is a huge itch-scratcher for me, filling the niche left by people such as A. Lee. Martinez and KE Mills.

Cyberpunk hackers, my beloved! @digital-chance's Nova Futurum looks awesome, and their main character in that is a hacker. I'm excited to see more of their work!

I'd be horribly remiss if I didn't mention @artbyeloquent's Hill To Die On. This looks at the paranormal from a distinctly Jewish POV which is utterly fascinating to me, and also Elo's writing style is just 🤌️ *mwah*!

Talking of writing style, for that and her just truly epic worldbuilding, I have to recommend @faelanvance. Both The Last Wild Place and The Whale God's Wife** will be an epic of the ages from what I've seen from the excerpts and snips. I'll take 'things I want on my shelf' for 10, Alex 😅️

And last, but not at all least, is my darling @aquadestinyswriting's The Wizard's Tale and The Trouble with Meredith. Now, with these, I'm highly biased, because the 'cool' thing about these are they're set in our highly modified version of the Fighting Fantasy World of Titan TTRPG. Also her characters are epic and I loves 'em ur honour.

Writer Q&A Tag Game

1. What motivates you to write?

The stories themselves. If I get inspired and like the premise, I'll write it down. From there, my passion for stories will take over and tell the story and expand upon the characters.

2. A line/short snippet of your writing that you are most proud/happy of. If not maybe share a line of someone else's work you love (just please credit them)

From the first chapter of my fanfic ysbwm; This place he’s in is a different world than the one he knows. There are so many flashing lights popping out of the building, constantly moving. The cars are shaped differently and drive on a painted street at amazing speeds. These buildings, like the one Steve just ran out of, are so much taller and sleeker than what he’s used to seeing. He gapes and haltingly spins around, letting his eyes flit around him and be momentarily captivated by the movement.

3. Which OC makes you smile every time you think/talk about them and what are they like?

At the moment, Theodore, from Scars of Duty. Writing a villain character is so interesting to me, especially since their character is going to change throughout the novel and series. I'm not the greatest at making ocs and I haven't purposely written a character like this before so this is a challenge that im excited to take on!

4. What process of writing do you enjoy the most?

Brainstorming. It's a love-hate relationship though lol. I love gathering all the stuff that inspired me and organizing it though so it's both worth it in the end and satisfying. Lately I found a template/organizer for the Notion app for my writing and I'm so excited about my projects now!!

5. What part of writing do you think you are the best at? (Yes stroke your own ego it's okay)

Honestly I'm not sure. I would say research and potentially preparation.

6. What is something in the writeblr community is most enjoyable?

I love the tag games!! I love seeing what people wrote and learning about them and then being able pay it forwards for others!

7. A writing tool/device you use that helps you with writing? (It could be speech to text, a writing program etc)

Tumblr, with it's endless quantities of prompts and the short stories that people write on here. I love it. I also starting using both Grammarly and ProWritingAid to correct my grammar after me being in denial for ages about needing them. Very useful for the editing process.

8. A piece of worldbuilding that you like in your own story? (It could be the magic system, a particular place in the story, a law etc)

Oooh my favorite piece of worldbuilding i like is from Scars of Duty but it's a huge spoiler so I better not say it haha. My second favorite is from Nova Futurum and it's the underground community's culture. One thing I've noticed when I was living in a lower-income neighborhood is the sense of community and how that can influence not only social interactions but also things like crime. People look out for each other and care about each other and will help each other get to better places, to the best of their abilities. And in my new neighborhood, in a different part of the city, it's entirely different. More money = more socially/emotionally distant. I barely know anyone and the weight of others' opinions matter more. It's interesting to me and I definitely will add this to Nova Futurum.

9. What piece of advice would you say to encourage others to write if they are having a rough patch?

Read other people's writings in a genre that you are NOT trying to write in. It doesn't have to be any particular style of literature, but something different enough from what you're working on. This way you can get inspired or even just have a break from the genre and get refreshed. It can get exhausting reading for research or inspiration.

I haven't announced these people yet, but they're all from Nova Futurum. Rowan has quite a big friend group so I'll only mention 3 of their closest friends.

Logan

These two spur each other on and they always are ankle deep in some random trouble. There's the time that they were rough-housing and shoving each other around and Rowan pushed too hard and Logan fell into a freshly poured patch of sidewalk. No one was hurt and Logan was only vaguely upset. Logan is fiercely loyal and never lets people talk shit about his friends. When Rowan is upset, Logan is the type to convince them to have a boxing match to let out their emotions. When it's the other way around, Rowan helps Logan get out of his head when he's upset and convinces him to explore a new section of town.

Caspian

These two teach each other how to take apart and reassemble technology. Caspian is especially interested in how to use technology as a fashion statement, which works great with Rowan's expertise with cybernetic implants. Caspian is a quiet and patient person and often gives Rowan enough space to share their emotions without feeling terrible about it. For all their quietness they come up with some wickedly smart ideas that help the group enjoy their time together even more.

Nicole

Rowan and Nicole appear to strangers in Nova Futurum as the two best behaved in their friend group. It's true, Nicole is the one who thinks of the repercussions of their actions and tends to be the "adult" one in their group. But this doesn't stop them from having fun with the others. These two enjoy exploring, just like the rest of the group. Unlike the others, these two explore upwards. They climb together and bond together over exercise and things like their favorite tv shows.

This was really fun to do and helped me flesh out my characters a lot more. Thank you again for the ask!

Absolutely Rowan. They are more likely to be in prison than not. More often than not they're doing illegal stuff online and always skirting around the law. They don't mean any harm to anyone but they're fucking sick of pointless shit being restricted. 100% they would pull a Snowden and release private/secure government information. They don't get caught often but thanks to their friends, they always are able to sneak out. The friend group is very familiar with being arrested and the police's routine with convicts so escape is an easy thing for them.

In Nova Futurum they have cats, dogs, snakes, and almost every pet you can have in our world. They don't have insects as pets unfortunately due to environmental issues and the dying out of a lot of these insects. They do have robots as pets (like R2D2 or BB8) or even projector pets for rich people.

What is the most embarrassing thing a blorbo or OC of yours has ever done?

Hello!! Thank you for the ask, this was really fun and a good challenge!

Rowan is a troublemaker and they find themselves getting into a lot of trouble pretty often. They're pretty used to seeing the same five cops patrolling the area and running across the government in nearly every aspect of life. They've been caught by the police so many times that they don't feel embarrassed when caught.

What they're not used to is hacking into a software and getting caught by other hackers. They're so used to being the best hacker in the neighborhood that when they get hacked and a bug from someone else, they find it to be embarrassing. They consider themselves the best hacker locally and when someone else broaches their code they feel both embarrassed and angry.

this gives me an idea for the plot oooh

Main WIP : Nova Futurum

Honestly i like that it's such a diverse world. I can do so much with it and it would still work in the world. It does make it difficult to focus on some details because I still want it to be open for interpretation. It's a battle...

One of the other things i like are my characters. I think they're great even at this early stage of making them. Not much else i can tell you at the moment, but i have big plans!! :)

The third thing that I like the most are the cybernetics and the implications of EVERYONE having them ever since they were a certain age. That makes me think about how that affects markets and any black markets or technicians. How would the government deal with teenagers having cybernetic implants and how would punks rebel against that? It's so fascinating to me HAHA

Nova Futurum is set in a sci-fi genre, specifically cyberpunk. If it was set in a medieval fantasy world, I'm pretty sure it would run similarly. Maybe it wouldn't have so much technology and instead have magic supplementing the tech. There would be marketplaces run by families and houses built in funny/tricky places in order to save space but in different styles than brutalist neo-modernism buildings.

The city would work in things like that but in social aspects, it would be entirely different. It wouldn't be rampant with lots of arguments within families or with black market technology upgrades and biological supplements. NovFut wouldn't even have the jobs that having all these pieces of tech would require. The police force would also have to police different elements of the citizens and specialize in different things than they would in a cyberpunk world.
