[NovFut] Rowan Reyes Intro WIP

introduction to the main character of Nova Futurum. more information will be added over time.

Basics //

Rowan Reyes is 22 years old and is a masculine presenting non-binary person who uses they/them pronouns. They work as an apprentice within a cybernetic repair shop within the heart of Nova Futurum, which allows them to utilize their skills in technology in hacking/cracking without getting caught. They also are fiercely loyal to their friends and would do quite a bit for them. Rowan and their dad have a strained relationship, due to their dad being often absent in their childhood. Thanks to their cybernetic implants, their strength and physical abilities are enhanced and allow for covert operations.

Punk Life: Rowan goes by GH0$T when they're traversing the underground. They often travel with their gang of punks, who they have grown up with and are all vey close to each other. GH0$T didn't like hurting innocent people, but they had no qualms about stealing from the rich and powerful, often operating with a lot of a lack of self-preservation in order to save the operations.

Appearance: They are white with slightly tanned skin. They have short tousled blue hair that reaches their eyebrows, occasionally styled up in spikes. Due to their gymnastic style of traveling routes, they are lean with a slight build at around 5 feet 8 inches (173cm). They have a tattoo on their torso, along with having various cybernetic implants along their body. Their left arm from mid-bicep down was lost during a car accident when they were small. Thanks to the abundance of cybernetic implants and prosthetics in the market, they were able to get their arm prosthetic shortly after.

History //

Birth Story: Rowan's parents had a one-night stand and only stayed in contact once in a while through social media. A year or two after Rowan was born, their mother dumped them onto their father's doorstep. Their father has taken care of them ever since. They have never seen their mother after then, which is also when she blocked them on social media and (presumably) moved

Growing Up: Rowan and their dad lived in the slums of Nova Futurum, in a small apartment. The Reyes family struggled to pay the bills which caused their dad to take several jobs, working long hours. Rowan often was left alone as a child, in-between coming home from government mandated schooling until their dad came back around 21:00 after his work ended. Occasionally they hung out with their neighbors and the other close residents's children but they also spent long hours teaching themselves how to code and to crack into mainframes and databases.

Teenage Life, the Beginning of Rebellion: After the government released their mandated AI software that was required by law to be used by all citizens, Rowan learned a way to crack the ai and use it for their own purposes, not for government approved. When their neighborhood friends heard about this, they wanted Rowan to adjust their ai's too. Soon enough, Rowan had a side-business running while they were a teenager. They worked with their friends, who self classify as punks now, to promote their business and to expose the government. When not working or going to school, Rowan and the punks explored Nova Futurum. They wanted to know what the city was like and got to see first-hand what horrors the government covers up.

Father - While not always physically there, Rowan and their dad always have each other's backs. He doesn't always approve of Rowan's lifestyle but agrees that the government has gone way too far. He does his best to support his kid in any way that he can, without getting caught.

Henry - Rowan and Henry met while Rowan was on a exploratory run around Nova Futurum. Rowan pissed off a cop and led a long chase to shake off the cop and ran right into the bar Henry works at. They both were surprised to see each other, Rowan because they didn't expect anyone to working that late in the night, and Henry because of Rowan's sprint inside the bar. Rowan hid out in the bar and chatted with Henry in the meantime. They became good friends with Rowan and the punks declaring the bar as one of their homebases. [MORE]

In Nova Futurum they have cats, dogs, snakes, and almost every pet you can have in our world. They don't have insects as pets unfortunately due to environmental issues and the dying out of a lot of these insects. They do have robots as pets (like R2D2 or BB8) or even projector pets for rich people.

A typical daily life in the world

Okay, I haven't quite hammered out a clear daily routine for my main character Rowan. What I do have is mixed in with spoilers so I'm going to hold off on some segments of the question for now. Rowan travels around the city using a combination of subways, hoverboards, robo-taxis, and transport-pads. Most often they use their hoverboard since they own it flat out. They use the subway next, due to a station being located close to their house. Robo-taxis are an indulgence they occasionally do, due to their price. Transport-pads are the most expensive and are only used by poorer people when crossing very substantial distances. Nova Futurum is a metropolis or a very large city with a dense population. Most people who are born inside the city rarely venture out, due to how inconvenient the process is along with monetary and spoiler-y reasons. The setting of the book is in this city. I was inspired by the famous Kowloon Walled City, like other cyberpunk authors, because of the density of the city. Everyone lives stacked on top of and next to each other, and I've incorporated that concept into Nova Futurum.

What is fashionable right now?

The whole idea of Nova Futurum is the melding of technology and humans enough to be confusing or unable to be taken apart. Cybernetic enhancements are a norm in this city and 0.001% of the population doesn't have an enhancement. It's normal, it's a way of life, and it's the only way to survive the toxic air that's in the environment. This means that customizing cybernetics is very common and there are quite a few bodyshops for parts and surgical implantation. I need to develop this further, I'd like to do this while I do the history, so come back for the full answer. Sorry. But! I had some other related info I wrote about fashion, which I'll include! Almost everything has QR codes or barcodes for people to scan. Most everyone has a camera in their iris, with limited exceptions (surgically removed, medically requested or required, no eyes, children, old people who lived in the region before NovFut was created). The camera automatically scans the barcode and tells the person what the object is or the barcode/QR code is about, using the speaker within the ear. (Individuals without an ear, or with similar exceptions as with the eyes, either do not have the speaker and will use tactile sensations & braille or will have the AI automatically update the brain with the information as a new thought.) Projection advertisements are highly common and have had their price lowered recently. Information from those is transferred in similar ways. They tend to use very attractive people as their models which changes depending on the individual’s preference they set.

What kind of music do people listen to?

This is something I had previously come up with so I'll just share that brainstorming now! Every popular musician is a vocaloid. Every human musician is approved by the government and are under very tight restrictions on what to say, do, wear, eat, look like, promote, etc. It is easier to have artificial musicians due to these restrictions. Artificial musicians are also more popular because fans can pay for special outfits/hairstyles or other ways to alter the appearance of the vocaloid, which stays as the style until they adjust it. other people don’t see one individuals’ styles, they just see the default or their adjustments. these musicians are also used in advertising (projectal & video). Indie vocaloids are not as popular in mainstream, but in the lower-income areas, they’re all the rage. There are celebrity vocaloids custom-made just for certain gangs by certain artists or artist-gangs.

👻 Deepest fear?

Rowan always says their worst fear is getting arrested by police and being unable to escape, but it actually is losing their loved ones. It doesn't matter if it's them choosing to walk away and leave Rowan or if it's something out of either of their control, like an injury or passing away. They rely on the people around them too much.

🍂 Favorite season?

Rowan really enjoys spring. It's not too hot and the sun doesn't reflect off the metal buildings too much, so there's a lot less sunburn. It does tend to get sludgy and gross, especially where Rowan lives in NovaFut, but they're pretty used to it. Plus it just looks and the sun feels so nice after months of being in the cold.

Lucian (SoD) gets scared by things like jumpscares/sudden appearances but isn't scared of gore or bugs.

Theodore (SoD) is afraid of fur jackets/scarves [idk what they're called lol] and animals like deer antelope and moose.

Rowan (NovaFut) is afraid of commitment, crosswalks on busy streets, and riding bicycles

Xavier (Matchbreakers) gets scared by horror and thriller movies easily but doesn't get scared by jumpscares. He also is afraid of bugs and insects

oh my lots of good questions!! i hadn't considered food in a cyberpunk world in depth like this! also a side note, i did research as i went along and if anyone wants any sources let me know, i'll be happy to supply them. this one is longer than expected, so I added a cut.

here we go! :D

What are staples? Where are they grown?

Due to awful air and limited farming lands, fresh fruits and vegetables are rare. Meat is more common than fresh fruit but still uncommon enough. Grains are quite common, though the most common are genetically modified foods similar to granola bars/pastes. A lot of the food is processed in some form to lengthen shelf life enough to be shipped across the world. Nova Futurum is located around the modern-day California/Oregon border and expands nearly into Nevada. Due to a mix of nuclear testing, climate degradation, over-tilling land, and higher acid levels in the soil, much of the farmland near Nova Futurum is toxic. This is one of the reasons why the food is processed so much. As I said, the most common thing to grow is grains, such as wheat and barley. It's a different type than what we're used to, thanks to genetic modification so harvests are more plentiful and nutrient-rich. Some (modified) nuts can be grown; walnut, pecan, almond, and rarely pistachio.

Are there any current food shortages? How did they come about?

There used to be a large citrus fruit farming community but a recent bug infestation targeted the citruses. This includes oranges, limes, and lemons. The bugs had tripled in population after taking refuge in warm Nova Futurum factory warehouses during the winter, which were recently built. This was a change in the environment for the bugs, who were used to hibernating throughout the winter. Any locally grown citruses come from greenhouses within Nova Futurum and locals say they don't taste the same. (Side note: They're fake. Scientists were just able to recreate the taste/look after hearing the news.)

Is vertical gardening a thing? What about privately grown crops? Rogue gardens in urban areas?

Absolutely. The rich people in Nova Futurum love it. They call it their 'greenhouse' and flaunt how close they feel to nature with their gardens. The whole concept of Nova Futurum urban planning is conserving space. That goes along great with some people's gardens. Sometimes, when they're lazy, they buy artificial gardens or hologram gardens. Scientists also grow gardens to create synthetic food and work alongside 'greenhouse' factories, which is where the synthetic food is mass produced. The middle class and lower class grow gardens out of necessity if they have the space. Sometimes there will be community gardens and sometimes entire buildings will be converted into a more affordable 'greenhouse factory.'

What are common food allergies/sensitivities/special dietary requirements, and how do people deal with these in your world? Is it still easy to eat out if you're affected, or does nobody else care?

Common allergies are to nuts, grains, and the synthetic material they use to make the ""grain"" paste. Since most food is made in huge batches, it's not common to find allergen-free foods. One would have to find a factory that creates the food without the allergens. If one is a foreigner with other allergies, the metropolis is even less accommodating. Eating out is not very common in general. It's mostly done by workers/business people, students, foreigners or tourists, or rich people. The general media-approved culture is to avoid eating in public since rich people want to feel synthetic and robotic. Many people also have had cybernetic augmentation surgeries (CAS) to change their stomach or even their brains to remove or alter their allergens. Some people do it just so they can eat an allergen.

What are culturally important dishes? Are they linked to a certain myth/tale or a holiday?

This is a really good question, but I need to develop myths/tales along with the history a bit more before I know. (I'll do that in a separate post)

What sort of foods are imported?

Organics; fruits, vegetables, meats, etc Synthetic; pastes, drinks/juices, frozen meals (A lot more than what nova futurum's government wants to admit...)

What dishes are considered luxurious? Which ones are poor people meals?

Luxurious: Fruit platters. Fruit salads. Plain vegetables. High concentration of juices. Smoothies. Meat (cow, pig, bird). Chef meals. Apple sauce, smashed carrots, mushed fruits or vegetables. Poor: Fruit jello. fruit flavored foods. Stir fry. Soups. Pastes. Boiled vegetables. Canned fruits and vegetables. Microwave/frozen dinners. pickled or preserved foods.

How are foods preserved?

They're preserved by altering the DNA and lengthening the time of ripening. They also use chemical baths or injections, freezing, and pickeling.

What's the current most popular advice on nutrition?

Food that we see as "convenience store food" or "gas station food" is really popular and is highly promoted to everyone. It's promoted because of it's long shelf life and it's "delicious flavor!" (though it's just mediocre, with an overall taste of synthesized grain paste). For rich people, their targeted promotions are chefs who know how to cook real fruits, vegetables, and meats. Most chefs or restaurant owners are used to the synthesized materials and the extended shelf life, so using "quicker to die" foods is strange since they don't act the same when cooking. Everything about rich people is about "returning to nature" and "enjoying nature's gifts." While of course living in a high rise apartment with a controlled environment.
