Worldbuilding Whenever 01

Prompt: Share a cool worldbuilding factoid from your current WIP and tag some pals to do the same!

@theskeletonprior started this game and I do in fact have a factoid I have not shared! One of the main settings for AOM is, of course, the Summer Band city of Tobarsha, where it's pretty much always warm and frequently sunny. I haven't totally built out the ways Tobarshans keep from getting way too much sun exposure, but one very common one is parasols! Everyone in the main cast has one, including a lot of people in Nicha Cove, because a good chunk of them are Tobarsha transplants. Most people have the same parasol pattern as hundreds of others, so popular media often leans on the trope of people with unique parasol patterns being destined to be in each other's lives. There's also a pretty clear moment on sunny days where the sun sets behind the mountains and all the parasols in the street seem to vanish all at once.

To avoid writing an epic in the tags, here's the AOM crew:

Horatio: lies early and often, though not very seriously (he works in customer service). He doesn't like to lie but he can do it very easily.

Sid: doesn't lie often, but usually has lies mixed in with truths because what matters is that you believe it.

Celia: lies all the time but 99% for comedic purposes. She tends not to care too much if the truth hurts.

Allison: lies frequently but only because he keeps saying that he's fine when he's definitely not.

Marcus: compensates for the ongoing lies he has to tell about his past by being very honest everywhere else, even though he's not really lying about his past so much as just not talking about it.

Avis: lies sparingly, mostly to figures of authority and herself. She only feels guilty about it if she actually liked you in the first place.

Sorian: would always rather tell a half-truth than a lie, and the truth than only half of one. He was like this even before meeting Avis, let alone being exiled from her.

Donovan: lies all the time but generally believes those lies are truer than they are, sometimes to the point of believing they are the actual truth.

Emma: lies when it's convenient for her, almost always to Donovan.

Leon: lies on occasion for reasons of politeness and comedy.

Edith: lies sometimes, mostly to avoid difficult situations (pissing off family members, getting stuck with a salesperson, etc.).

Like @autumnalwalker I also didn't get the notification, so here's last week's blorbo blursday for some AOM folks:

Horatio: money, so he can give most of it to Christina to help her fix her crow problem. It would be hard to change his mind because he doesn't want power and he feels like he already has ultimate love (of every kind but romantic).

Sid: power, if that means he can somehow ban his parents from bothering him. Otherwise it'll have to be ultimate love.

Avis: love, because her current marriage is hot garbage and "ultimate" love sounds pretty ironclad. Her second choice is power, specifically the power to hit Sorian where it hurts (she already has this but doesn't believe she does).

Sorian: love, but only if this means his marriage is fixed. He doesn't think there's an ultimate love that doesn't involve Avis. But he'd settle for ultimate money if that means they can build another boat together.

Leon: would like a brochure for this "ultimate love" because it sounds like a prime swinging opportunity. No? Well then he'll take ultimate money to make an ultimate love swinging opportunity.

Edith: knows Leon is already getting the brochure for this "ultimate love" thing so she'll take ultimate power to get Horatio to take a vacation, jeez. Ultimate money would help with that too, so that's her second choice.

Celia: money, obviously, she says, not mentioning that she is both intrigued and dismayed that there can be an ultimate love and that it might not be the arrangement she currently has.

Allison: does ultimate power mean, like, omnipotence? Because if so, he'll take that specifically to do things such as move his home planet closer with no repercussions and make a cloudy day that only affects him. Oh, just regular power? Uh…then…ultimate love, if it's his current love but better. Otherwise can he please just have one ultimate money, thanks.

Most recently in AOM I added Antony, who originally was just a name for Sorian to drop to make a point, a long-ago friend that I had the very vaguest idea about. But then I realized there was a lot of potential in Avis running into someone she knew in the before times who isn't part of Sorian's family. And someone who is on her same level (unlike Sid, who is a lot younger) and who she's actually friends with.

It would be challenging to tell the same story from his perspective, though. It would be a riveting tale about a guy who got letters from a distant friend, then stopped getting letters, and then one day he ran into the friend and they got drunk and caught up. It's possible he intersects AOM at some point later, but for the most part he is extremely a side character and I want to keep him that way.

WIP Wednesday: Supporting Characters

An auspicious WIP Wednesday to all the writeblrs out there. Today, I'd like to know all about your favorite supporting character. How did this character come to be? Did you have them in mind from the word go or did you just figure "Well someone's gonna have to be here to tell the hero about The MacGuffin," and went about creating a character? How would the story look if told from this character's perspective? Would it change genre, or would it be a shift of perspective on the same kind of story?

An AOM Hero Forge Post

@theskeletonprior @vacantgodling I'm doing it finally! I haven't stopped making heroforges (it's great to do while I'm in class on Zoom) but here's a collection of my combo poses for AOM. They're a bit challenging to do because I have no control over their lower body pose, so I'm building all of these from preexisting poses and upper body adjustments. Hero Forge is also generally better for vibes than details but I think these turned out pretty well.

These glimpses of the Shadowsinger so brief and fleeting and precious, opening the chasm deep within him that he knew it was smart to leave closed.

"What do you want me to say, Azriel? Would you like me to lie?" The words were caustic--he'd never hated himself more. He took a step backwards to lean against the wall, though he clenched his fists at his sides, itching, begging, to touch him again. He wanted to run his hands along the gossamer of his wings, the ridges of his surprisingly gentle hands. He would take to the grave the things he woke up dreaming about in the night, waking with a single name always on his lips.

The Mane 6 all going after their go to creative activity! This was directly inspired by the MLP Art/Creative Discord server we set up, since it got me wondering what each would enjoy and share of their own.

AJ making adorable little wood creatures. Rarity obviously doing some creative sketching. Pinkie doing some art - which I imagine as falling into expressionism. Fluttershy composing melodies and songs, possibly with lyrics. Rainbow doing art as well, though pure chaos and just letting out all her emotions, going for abstract until it feels right. And finally, Twilight being a writer (she will absolutely deny writing fanfiction while being completely red faced).
