Not This Winter

I used to feel as if winter were always around

the corner, waiting, hiding, biding its time in

the woods or in some underground cave, more

likely skulking in the high country somewhere

north like Canada where even the lowlands are

frosty with potential, its vast central plains a

conduit for the arctic to march through straight

down to the Dakotas and Wisconsin and such.

Something in the blood, the DNA of millennia

of human struggle, of preparing for the white

winds and creeping death, it stays within our

bones, at least if your people came from some

latitude where cold was a thing that hid quietly

inside your mind like a bone deep memory that

kept you alive, made you get started in spring

to prepare for what was an inevitable suffering.

This year, I did not feel it; now that this planet

is warming, I might as well be some cottager in

Florida; not one inch of snow in these parts, all

of it elsewhere, any arrow in any direction except

for my saddened soul in need of the solitude that

only snow can bestow, muffling the din, quieting

the commotion, giving me a reason to stay inside

and dream by the fire with one eye on the window.

The season closing in and still there are flowers to set off the burnished foliage of autumn.  

Raydon’s Favorite Asters are full of their lavender dreaminess.  This floral display is such a great reward for putting up with their somewhat weedy selves throughout the summer.

The tree with what looks like red flowers is the Seven Son Flower, Heptacodium miconoides, showing off it’s red phase of the flowers.  These are not really flowers at all, but, instead, calyces surrounding small fruits formed from the fragrant white flowers that lasted throughout the month of September.  

Pictured last, a cool late flowering Allium - this one is Allium thumbergii ‘Ozawa’ and a bee favorite.  A tiny thing with loads of flowers and attended by a crowd of pollinators.
