This full Moon has also been called the Long Night Moon (Mohican), as it rises during the “longest” nights of the year, near the December winter solstice. This name is doubly fitting because December’s full Moon shines above the horizon for a more extended period than most full Moons.
• This December is unique because there will be TWO new Moons. This is called a Black Moon.
A Black Moon is a special kind of New Moon, just as a Blue Moon is a special kind of Full Moon. Neither are astronomical terms; both are catch phrases for an unusual lunar calendar occurrence. For this reason, the definition of a Black Moon can vary and may refer to:
-The second new Moon in a month. This is the definition of Black Moon that’s used most often & it’s the most common. It occurs once every 29 months.
-The third new Moon in a season of four New Moons. Every season (spring, summer, fall, winter) has 3 months & 3 new Moons. However, occasionally (every 33 months), there is a season with 4 new Moons. In this case, the third New Moon is called a Black Moon.
-When there are NO new Moons in a month. This can only happen in February since it’s the only calendar month that is shorter (28 days) than the lunar month. When there is not a new Moon in February, there will be two new Moons for both January & March. It’s a rare occurrence (every 19 years or so) and the next one isn’t until 2033.

“Yule” comes from Old English geol, which shares a history with the equivalent word from Old Norse, jól. Both these words referred to a midwinter festival centered around the winter solstice, which traditionally marked the halfway point of the winter season. After the solstice—the shortest day of the year—the days again begin to grow longer, so it’s thought that Yule was a celebration of the re-appearance of the Sun &the fertile land’s rebirth.
• The celebration of Yule is one of the oldest winter celebrations in the world. Ancient people were hunters & spent most of their time outdoors. The seasons & weather played a significant part in their lives. The customs & traditions associated with it vary widely. Scholars have connected the original celebrations of Yule to the Wild Hunt, the god Odin & the heathen Anglo-Saxon Mōdraniht (“Mothers’ Night”)
• Some believe it marks the rebirth of the Sun (the God) from the Earth (the Goddess) & the cold days of winter will soon begin to wane. The Goddess is seen in her virgin Maiden aspect
In towns and cities throughout Sweden during the Christmas season, large goats are constructed out of straw. It is thought that the tradition originated in ancient times, perhaps as a tribute to the god Thor, who was said to ride in a chariot pulled by goats. In Sweden the goat came to be associated with the Christmas celebration & the Yule goat is now considered by many to be a companion or counterpart to Santa Claus.
This connects to ancient proto-Slavic beliefs where the Koliada (Yule) festival honors the god of the fertile sun & the harvest. This god, Devac (also known as Dazbog or Dažbog), was represented by a white goat. Consequently the Koliada festivals always had a person dressed as a goat, often demanding offerings in the form of presents. A man-sized goat figure is known from 11th-century remembrances of Childermas, where it was led by a man dressed as Saint Nicholas, symbolizing his control over the Devil.
Related festivals:
•Christmas- December 25th:
An annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ as the son of God. For Christians, believing that God came into the world in the form of man to atone for the sins of humanity rather than knowing Jesus's exact birth date is considered to be the primary purpose of celebrating Christmas.
Hanukkah-December 25-January 2nd:
A Jewish festival commemorating the recovery of Jerusalem & subsequent rededication of the Second Temple at the beginning of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE.
Hanukkah is observed for eight nights & days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar. The festival is observed by lighting the candles of a candelabrum with nine branches, commonly called a menorah or hanukkiah.
Kwanzaa-December 26th-January 1st:
An annual celebration of African-American culture, culminating in a communal feast called Karamu, usually on the sixth day. It was created by activist Maulana Karenga, based on African harvest festival traditions from various parts of West & Southeast Africa. Kwanzaa was first celebrated in 1966.
A Kwanzaa ceremony may include drumming and musical selections, libations, a reading of the African Pledge & the Principles of Blackness, reflection on the Pan-African colors, a discussion of the African principle of the day or a chapter in African history, a candle-lighting ritual, artistic performance & finally, a feast of faith (Karamu Ya Imani).
Saturnalia- December 17-23rd:
An ancient Roman festival and holiday in honour of the god Saturn, The holiday was celebrated with a sacrifice at the Temple of Saturn, in the Roman Forum & a public banquet, followed by private gift-giving, continual partying & a carnival atmosphere that overturned Roman social norms: gambling was permitted & masters provided table service for their slaves as it was seen as a time of liberty for both slaves & freedmen alike.
A common custom was the election of a “King of the Saturnalia”, who gave orders to people, which were followed & presided over the merrymaking. The gifts exchanged were usually gag gifts or small figurines made of wax or pottery known as sigillaria. The poet Catullus called it “the best of days”.
Other celebrations:
Feast of Epona- December 18th:
Eponalia is the feast day of Gaulish Goddess Epona, the Divine Mare & in the time of the Roman Empire
Epona is known to be one of a very few Gaulish deities whose names were spread to the rest of the Roman Empire. This seems to have happened because Roman cavalry units stationed in Gaul followed her & adopted her as their Patroness. This may have started because many of the cavalry troops were conscripted from Gaul as they were superb horsemen. From Gaul the Romans took Epona with them including to Rome where She was given her own feast day on the 18 December. They worshipped her as Epona Augusta or Epona Regina & invoked her on behalf of the Emperor. She even had a shrine in the barracks of the Imperial Bodyguard.
Hunting of the Wren-December 26th:
A traditional custom carried out on the Isle of Man on  St. Stephen’s Day. It consists of groups of people going around villages and towns singing and dancing a traditional song and dance around a decorated wren pole.
The earliest and most common folklore story accounting for the origin of hunt the wren tells of a fairy/enchantress/witch whose beauty lures the men of the Isle of Man to harm, for which she is chased and is changed into the form of a wren. It is therefore in punishment for her actions that the wren is hunted on St. Stephen’s Day

APOLLO:
Blest Pæan, come, propitious to my prayer, illustrious power, whom Memphian tribes revere,
Slayer of Tityus, and the God of health, Lycorian Phœbus, fruitful source of wealth.
Spermatic, golden-lyred, the field from thee receives it's constant, rich fertility.
Titanic, Grunian, Smynthian, thee I sing, Python-destroying, hallowed, Delphian king:
Rural, light-bearer, and the Muse's head, noble and lovely, armed with arrows dread:
Far-darting, Bacchian, two-fold, and divine, power far diffused, and course oblique is thine.
O, Delian king, whose light-producing eye views all within, and all beneath the sky:
Whose locks are gold, whose oracles are sure, who, omens good reveals, and precepts pure:
Hear me entreating for the human kind, hear, and be present with benignant mind;
For thou surveys this boundless æther all, and every part of this terrestrial ball
Abundant, blessed; and thy piercing sight, extends beneath the gloomy, silent night;
Beyond the darkness, starry-eyed, profound, the stable roots, deep fixed by thee are found.
The world's wide bounds, all-flourishing are thine, thyself all the source and end divine:
'Tis thine all Nature's music to inspire, with various-sounding, harmonizing lyre;
Now the last string thou tuned to sweet accord, divinely warbling now the highest chord;
The immortal golden lyre, now touched by thee, responsive yields a Dorian melody.
All Nature's tribes to thee their difference owe, and changing seasons from thy music flow
Hence, mixed by thee in equal parts, advance Summer and Winter in alternate dance;
This claims the highest, that the lowest string, the Dorian measure tunes the lovely spring.
Hence by mankind, Pan-royal, two-horned named, emitting whistling winds through Syrinx famed;
Since to thy care, the figured seal is consigned, which stamps the world with forms of every kind.
Hear me, blessed power, and in these rites rejoice, and save thy mystics with a suppliant voice.

DIANA:
Hear me, Jove's daughter, celebrated queen, Bacchian and Titan, of a noble mien:
In darts rejoicing and on all to shine, torch-bearing Goddess, Dictynna divine;
Over births presiding, and thyself a maid, to labor-pangs imparting ready aid:
Dissolver of the zone and wrinkled care, fierce huntress, glorying in the Sylvan war:
Swift in the course, in dreadful arrows skilled, wandering by night, rejoicing in the field:
Of manly form, erect, of bounteous mind, illustrious dæmon, nurse of human kind:
Immortal, earthly, bane of monsters fell, 'tis thine; blest maid, on woody hills to dwell:
Foe of the stag, whom woods and dogs delight, in endless youth who flourish fair and bright.
O, universal queen, august, divine, a various form, Cydonian power, is thine:
Dread guardian Goddess, with benignant mind auspicious, come to mystic rites inclined
Give earth a store of beauteous fruits to bear, send gentle Peace, and Health with lovely hair,
And to the mountains drive Disease and Care.

Yemaya (Yoruba)
I am safe in the bonds of love In the rhythmic cadence of the ocean's embrace, amidst the glistening waves and salty breeze, Yemaya reigns as an orisha of comfort and maternal grace. Her essence is as boundless as the sea, nurturing life with her vast waters, a divine protector who offers solace and strength. As the ocean cradles the Earth in its blue arms, Yemaya holds her children close, whispering the ancient truth that we are all united in the currents of life.
Divinatory Meaning: Yemaya's appearance in your life signals a time to seek out emotional healing and to embrace the fundamental connections that bind us all. Let her soothing presence guide you to deep self-reflection and understanding. The journey may uncover hidden depths within, leading to a revitalization of your essence and spirit. Seek solace in her watery realm, and find absolution in the acceptance of life's innate ebb and flow.
Challenge: The waves of our emotions can be tempestuous and daunting, but Yemaya challenges you to dive into these waters with an open heart. The test is to shed the layers of emotional defenses, to reveal your true essence and to allow Yemaya's blessed waters to wash away past hurts. Her call is for you to trust in the healing power of vulnerability and to rise from the waters reborn in resilience and grace.
“A mother’s arms are more comforting than anyone else’s.” Princess Diana
With every wave that laps upon the shore and every tide that follows the moon’s pull, Yemaya’s teachings resonate with those who seek her wisdom. She is the guardian of the deep and the mystery that lies beneath the surface, reflecting the depths of our own emotional landscapes. Enveloped by her azure realm, a sense of love's omnipresence wraps the seeker in a cloak of reassuring calm.
In the sanctuary of Yemaya's embrace, the heart learns to dance to the rhythm of the sea - pulsing with the beat of life's unending cycle. Gently, but with immense strength, she molds the spirit, filling it with a resilience that mirrors her own eternal nature. Amidst the ocean's vast expanse, Yemaya is both the journey and the destination, a beacon of soft, powerful, maternal guidance.
In the presence of Yemaya, fear dissipates, courage swells, and emotional fortitude surfaces. It is here, in the boundless blue, that healing energies converge and transformation unfolds. Yemaya embodies the life force that flows through every vein of existence, the tender yet powerful surge of growth, the spring of rejuvenation that follows every winter’s repose.
Beneath the starry sky, as the seascape whispers of limitless possibilities, Yemaya offers her assurance: the embrace of love as vast as the ocean itself. Her lesson is a covenant with the depths within, a pledge that each encounter with the tempest brings forth new beginnings, and a testament that love’s bond is the anchor amid the waves of life.

I like to think that during those long Kansas Winter nights, Martha taught Clark about patience and gentling his strength by having him help with the mending. Darning socks and sweaters, patching holes. so when a League meeting goes overtime, well, Superman doesn't have a ton of time to waste between his articles and being on call for Metropolis so he just sort of. Pulls out his mending right there at the table. low--he can see through the table, he doesn't want to distract anyone, but it really does need to get done is the thing. and then the Flash interrupt with an " oh thank god" and there's a zip of lighting and then he is knitting. He needs something to do with his hands if they want him to sit still! The scarf is three feet long by the time Batman looks over and sighs audibly. It doesn't take many meetings for others to start doing the same. Not as a signal that this is Taking Too Long, but it helps everyone stay focused. Diana lets a drop spindle whir away as she wraps thread while she explains a Problem. Shayara very violently needlefelts the most delicate little birds with a fine needle. Shazam sheepishly brings out a little box of beads and string and makes an assortment of tiny lizard keychains. Martian Manhunter folds strips and squares of paper into a galaxy of little stars and tiny frogs to boot while Aquaman works on a single seasilk glove with amazing deftness considering one of his hands is made of water. John Stewart's quiet crochet makes an apperance on more than one occasion. Kent Nelson's lap loom would feel decidedly weirder if he weren't making a cheerful tablerunner in wide, colorful stripes, without a magic rune or indication of weaving the fate of the world in sight. One day even Batman gets out a cross stitch frame, a dozen little birds surrounding the words "Bless This Nest"

Imbolc is a Celtic tradition that marks the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. The Celtic pagan holiday falls on February 1st-2nd and heralds the change of the seasons and the shift from the dark days to the sun filled days ahead. This celebration, from information gathered from Irish poetry, dates back to early 10th century. From informaton gleamed the holiday was originally around the veginning of spring and aligned more towards rebirth. However, we can justify this with the meanjng of the word Imbolc. The holiday's name means 'in the belly of the mother' and within the earth at this time sturs the seeds of spring.
Brigid resides over this holiday and was originally worshipped by a class of poets and historians called the Filid. Brigid is a Celtic fire and fertility goddess, daughter of Dagda, lineage of the Tuath du Danann, and deemed one of the most powerful Celtic deities. It is also believed that she is a triple goddess due to the fact that she has two sisters with the same name but they seem to represent different aspects which is very much the summize of most triple deities. As time moved away from paganism Brigid was adopted into Christianity as St. Brigid and was still saint/goddess of dairy maids, cattle, midwives, newborns and nuns.
Per https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/imbolc:
"Brigid appears in the saga Cath Maige Tuired and the Lebor Gabála Érenn, a purported history of Ireland collected from various poems and texts in the 10th century."
"Myths about Brigid’s birth say she was born with a flame in her head and drank the milk of a mystical cow from the spirit world. Brigid is credited with the very first keening, a traditional wailing for the dead practiced at funerals by Irish and Scottish women."

It’s time to climb on my soapbox because I’ve got Yellowjackets theories!!
As someone who has seen all of Lost, I looooove cooking up theories in my head about what the Fuck is going on in those woods! Of course, this is completely separate from my meta understanding/enjoyment of the show, because one of the themes is about how “It” and the Yellowjackets are one and the same. With that disclaimer out of the way, I’ve got 2 theories: one based in reality, the other supernatural.
Heavy Metals: this theory is more based in reality, and basically posits that the more unexplainable events are actually caused by heavy metal poisoning. The area of Wilderness that the plane crashed in used to be a mining site for metals like iron, lead, and nickel that has long since forgotten. The crash itself could have been caused by electromagnetic field’s interfering with the plane’s navigation systems and leading them off course. The red water from the river is from iron deposits and the dead birds in winter could be from heavy metal poisoning and from the em fields throwing off their internal navigation. It would also explain the relatively low amount of game/diseased animals, as heavy metals present in the ground can move up the food chain through the soil into plants, then herbivores like deer, then predators like bears. Possibly experiencing electromagnetic sensitivity, exposure to heavy metals in the lake water, and on a withdrawal from her schizophrenia medication may have caused Lottie’s initial hallucinations, psychosis, and religious ecstasy. This also may explain the increase in violence from the girls, as we see the second hunt happen after eating the belt soup, putting more heavy medals into their already starving bodies. The symbols carved in the trees could be leftover from the former miners, marking out paths and mine entrances, as we see with the tunnels under Javi’s tree. I’ve also seen the theory that the symbol is a map of the mine tunnels, which fits really nicely into the fact that they are markers.
Deities: this theory is a bit less developed, but posits that the occurrences are supernatural in nature, with the Wilderness itself being a living being with its own wants and desires. The Roman gods Diana and Bacchus play a pretty big role in this theory, as I believe that it may be a combination of the two that has lead to the Hunts and psychosis of the Yellowjackets. Both gods are deeply intertwined with the wilderness in their mythology and worship. All the majorly plot relevant animals seen in S1 are sacred to the goddess Diana: the deer, the bear, and the wolf. The girl’s hallucinate Travis is a stag, which parallels the myth in which Diana/Artemis turns Actaeon into a stag who is then hunted by his own hounds. She herself is the goddess of the Hunt, a reoccurring event in the show, and is regularly depicted as having all-female huntresses as her attendants. Similarly, Bacchus is the god of wine, ecstasy, and madness. During Doomcoming, the girls become intoxicated off of berry wine and psychedelics before becoming incredibly violent, mirroring the practices of Bacchus/Dionysus’ mythical all-female followers, the maenads, who were said to participate in orgiastic rituals and frenzy, even gaining supernatural strength to rip apart men with their bare hands. Lottie’s first hallucination saw her in a set of tunnels, led by a stag (symbol of Diana) to what appeared to be an altar of candles, perhaps the goddess leading her towards her worship? The birds falling from the sky could be a blessing from Diana, an archer who could shoot them from the sky. She is also the goddess of girls and childbirth, with stillbirth being mythologically a sign of losing her favor/being cursed by her. Both gods have also had associations with blood sacrifice (Iphigenia and Orpheus). I think that before the events of the series, there were devotees of the gods who lived in this part of the wilderness, calling to them and binding them ti the land. Perhaps the gods of the Wilderness wish to keep people their for their worship, taking steps to crash the plane and thwart their escape attempts. The symbol could be a remnant from some other previous cultists of the gods, some possibly still being present in the area (aka Javi’s friend in the tunnels).
Anyway lmk what y’all think, these are not very coherent but I love to try and piece stuff together!

For my Southern Hemisphere's, we will begin to celebrate Imbolc!
Also known as: Brigid's Day, Candlemas, and Oimelc
Celebrated as: as a time of new beginnings and the awakening of the natural world after the dark winter months.
Imbolc celebrations took the form of a festival in honor of the pagan goddess Brigid, who was evoked in fertility blessings and oversaw poetry, crafts and prophecy. Brigid was considered one of the most powerful Celtic gods, the daughter of the Dagda, the oldest god in the Celtic pantheon Tuatha du Danann. She had two sisters also named Brigid (though it’s speculated that these sisters are meant to symbolize different aspects of the same goddess.)
This sabbat marks the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox and is associated with new beginnings and the first stirrings of spring. It is a time to light candles, plant seeds, and set intentions for the coming year.
Imbolc brings the awakening of the life force when the first green shoots of bulbs appear. Life is stirring again. It is a time to honour the feminine, and get ready for spring.
Imbolc is also known as Candlemas, a name which derives from the traditional lighting of candles to lure back the sun.

FLUFF, ANGST, OR SMUT?: same as Ferre~ i'm in it for the character development, for the vibes, for the growth, for poking and prodding at psyches and morals and hearts, or just to figure out how people interact, i love just... the very concept of interaction itself~ i do angst >:3333 i do fluff :33 but i mostly do?? i have no idea how to describe it lmao but i don't do smut, i don't know how to and feel weird about it ♥
PLOTS OR MEMES?: I'M A CRIMINAL, I JUST KEEP STEALING FERRE'S ANSWERS BC SAME?? LKDSGJFLHG lately I've realized I do enjoy plotting more >:3 i used to be a pretty wing it kinda guy mostly because plotting translated to serious commitment in my head? and the mere thought of that was scawwy and exhausting, it felt like i was suddenly Planning and Strategizing in a work environment oh god, BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT PLOTTING IS TURNS OUT FDKLLLLLLLGH i had it all wrong~ it doesn't have to feel like business emails, it SHOULDN'T, it can be random ideas thrown back and forth and i absolutely adore that, i've been enjoying a fair amount of plotting lately >:3 and have ONLY BEEN WINNING~ that being said, memes are perfect for lil spin-off/filler episodes of ongoing dynamics, but especially good for ice-breakers (if we never interacted before, hmu~)
LONG OR SHORT REPLIES?: longer, i simply don't shut up~ i can do shorter, but they tend to lengthen naturally with time; i try to match my partner above all else, but there's always something i just... can't keep out of the damn text~ there are certain muses, though, that demand less text, characters like Diana are very curt and cut-off and it reflects in her threads and all that-- SO, before i completely derail, i go for long replies usually, but i can flex my flexing bones and do short too~
TIME TO WRITE?: GOSH, f*ck if i know at this point. it used to be in the evening, now it's just... whenever i have time & energy~ i don't work consistent regular hours, so there's no clearly defined work hours and leisure hours, so sometimes evenings, somethings mornings, sometimes weekdays, sometimes weekends, usually not afternoons, i do try to keep a queue going though so hehehe~ don't worry~
ARE YOU LIKE YOUR MUSE(S)?: maybe...? i don't know anymore-- KLDSJGLKGF realistically speaking, probably? at least some of them, mostly because the saying goes you put a bit of yourself in every character you create, i would also say because i have Too Many Muses so statistically i'm probably in there somewhere~

heath entered the penthouse, the place he had naturally learned to love, and which recently felt more like home than his own residence. he placed the sunflower bouquet in one of the luxurious vase previously displayed in the glass cabinet, filling it with the necessary amount of water. finding those flowers had not been an easy task due to the winter, but nothing was impossible when it came to diana. heath would move heaven and hell to see her smile.
that was when he noticed lev for the first time, standing in front of the glass door that gave access to the balcony. he knew better than to think this was just a mere coincidence.
“i know, i know - sunflowers in winter. all hat, no cattle” he began, shaking his head in denial “christ on a stick, i went to at least ten flower shops to find those. all the vendors starin’ at me as if i were askin’ for a damn handjob” explained while adding flower food to the water “real talk i hope yer sister keep them alive for at least three days” heath walked into the living room, changing the vase that was on display on the coffee table for the new arrangement.
he then headed towards lev with short but incisive steps, stopping face to face with the other, who now felt the weight of his piercing dark gaze. heath had planned to go after the other movska the very second diana told him about the incident from six years ago. a fact that lev had hidden from him “bless ya heart, buddy” he said, his lips opening in a venomous grin “cause darn tootin’ this ain’t yer lucky day”

This full Moon has also been called the Long Night Moon (Mohican), as it rises during the “longest” nights of the year, near the December winter solstice. This name is doubly fitting because December’s full Moon shines above the horizon for a more extended period than most full Moons.
In Europe, ancient pagans called the December full Moon the “Moon Before Yule,” in honor of the Yuletide festival celebrating the return of the sun heralded by winter solstice.

The celebration of Yule is one of the oldest winter celebrations in the world. Ancient people were hunters & spent most of their time outdoors. The seasons & weather played a significant part in their lives. The customs and traditions associated with it vary widely.
Scholars have connected the original celebrations of Yule to the Wild Hunt, the god Odin, and the heathen Anglo-Saxon Mōdraniht ("Mothers' Night")
Some believe it marks the rebirth of the Sun (the God) from the Earth (the Goddess) & the cold days of winter will soon begin to wane.
In Sweden the goat came to be associated with the Christmas celebration, and the Yule goat is now considered by many to be a companion or counterpart to Santa Claus.
Related festivals:
Christmas- An annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ as the son of God, primarily observed on December 25th
Hanukkah- A Jewish festival commemorating the recovery of Jerusalem & subsequent rededication of the Second Temple at the beginning of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE.
Kwanzaa- An annual celebration of African-American culture from December 26 to January 1st, culminating in a communal feast called Karamu, usually on the sixth day.
Saturnalia-
is an ancient Roman festival and holiday in honour of the god Saturn, held on 17 December of the Julian calendar & later expanded with festivities through to 23 December. The holiday was celebrated with a sacrifice at the Temple of Saturn, in the Roman Forum & a public banquet, followed by private gift-giving, continual partying & a carnival atmosphere that overturned Roman social norms: gambling was permitted & masters provided table service for their slaves as it was seen as a time of liberty for both slaves and freedmen alike.
A common custom was the election of a "King of the Saturnalia", who gave orders to people, which were followed & presided over the merrymaking. The gifts exchanged were usually gag gifts or small figurines made of wax or pottery known as sigillaria. The poet Catullus called it "the best of days".
Other celebrations:
Feast of Epona-
Eponalia is the feast day of Gaulish Goddess Epona, the Divine Mare & in the time of the Roman Empire it was celebrated on December 18th.
Hunting of the Wren-
A traditional custom carried out on the Isle of Man on the 26 December, St. Stephen's Day.
Stephen's Day

A WITCH'S GUIDE ❄️🎄
to Celebrating the Holidays (with Christians)
by: P. Monarch
December 21, 2024
❄️🎄❄️🎄❄️🎄❄️🎄❄️🎄❄️🎄❄️🎄❄️🎄
The holiday season is a time of joy, togetherness, and shared traditions. For witches who come from Christian families or have Christian friends, December can be both magical and challenging. How do you honor your witchcraft practices while celebrating alongside those who follow Christian customs? The answer lies in finding common ground and blending the best of both worlds, creating a unique, harmonious experience that reflects the spirit of the season.
Many witches are familiar with the historical overlap between Christmas and pagan traditions. Long before Christmas was established as a Christian holiday, pagans celebrated Yule and the Winter Solstice. These ancient traditions marked the return of the sun, symbolizing hope, renewal, and the triumph of light over darkness. Today’s Christmas trees, wreaths, and even gift-giving owe much to these earlier practices. Recognizing this shared heritage can make it easier to find connections and celebrate alongside Christian loved ones without feeling disconnected from your spiritual path.
One witch, Diana, recalls her first Christmas as an openly practicing pagan in her devoutly Christian family. “At first, I was nervous about attending church with them,” she admits. “But I realized that the candlelight service was a beautiful way to honor the return of the light, something I already celebrated during Yule. Instead of feeling out of place, I connected with the universal message of hope and renewal.” For Diana, the key was focusing on the shared values of love and community rather than the differences in belief.
When it comes to incorporating witchcraft into traditional Christmas celebrations, the possibilities are endless. Decorating the Christmas tree, for example, can take on a magical twist. Add ornaments that symbolize your intentions for the coming year—a star for guidance, crystals for abundance, or a moon ornament for intuition. You might also craft a garland of dried herbs like rosemary and thyme, imbuing your home with protective energy while blending seamlessly with the festive decor.
Lighting candles is another beautiful way to merge traditions. Christians light Advent candles to symbolize hope, peace, joy, and love, while witches often use candle magic to set intentions. Why not combine the two? As you light candles with your family, silently focus on your own blessings and wishes for the season. One witch, Alex, shares, “During Christmas dinner, I always light a green candle for prosperity and a red one for passion and courage. It’s a simple way to bring my craft into the celebration without drawing too much attention.”
Participating in Christian traditions doesn’t mean compromising your beliefs. Many witches find that attending church services or joining carol singing with family can be meaningful experiences when approached with an open heart. If you’re comfortable, you can view these activities as opportunities to connect with the energy of the Christ light—a symbol of divine love and compassion that resonates with many spiritual paths. If not, you can choose to quietly meditate, focusing on your personal connection to the divine while respecting the faith of those around you.
Hosting a holiday gathering offers an excellent opportunity to create a space that honors both traditions. You might set up a seasonal altar in your home, blending elements like evergreen boughs, holly, and mistletoe with symbols of rebirth and Christian imagery. Before the meal, invite your guests to join in a gratitude circle, where everyone shares something they’re thankful for. This simple ritual can be profoundly moving and serves as a reminder of the shared human experience that transcends religious differences.
Of course, navigating these celebrations isn’t always easy. Questions or skepticism from Christian friends and family can arise, especially if they’re not familiar with your beliefs. Setting gentle but firm boundaries is essential. One witch, Caleb, shares his strategy: “When my aunt asked why I was burning incense before Christmas dinner, I explained that it was my way of giving thanks and blessing the space. She didn’t fully understand, but she respected my explanation, and it actually opened up a conversation about our different traditions.”
Ultimately, celebrating Christmas as a witch isn’t about blending in or hiding who you are. It’s about finding harmony and creating a meaningful experience that reflects your values. The holiday season, at its core, is about love, connection, and the triumph of light over darkness—principles that both Christians and witches hold dear. By focusing on these shared values, you can enjoy the festivities with an open heart, honoring your path while celebrating with those you care about.
As the year draws to a close, take a moment to reflect on the magic of the season. Whether you’re lighting candles, singing carols, or simply spending time with loved ones, remember that the light we celebrate—whether it’s the return of the sun or the birth of Christ—shines in all of us. Celebrate it in a way that feels authentic to you, and let the season’s magic guide you into the new year.
Namaste, Brothers of the Craft!
