something positive about the witcher 4 trailer that i’ve not seen anyone mention, maybe because it’s cdpr so it’s already to be expected that the visual design will be peak…

and maybe because i need an eyewash station after all that netflix has thrown at us…

but it felt great to see new witcher visuals with very present slavic design and motifs, the peasant girl’s dress and her crown, the atmosphere and setting.

again, maybe the bar is low because of netflix, this is just cdpr doing what they did great in witcher 3, but it’s satisfying to see the witcher retain a strong visual style and identity :p obviously they would be insane to change directions now, but it’s also not guaranteed (witcher 2 famously being more generic fantasy inspired, design-wise)

i’m just happy i finally got the “oooh, witcher” feeling when i saw it, which hasn’t happened in a while i guess

So I voted Hempel on this one just because he’s probably my favorite artist for the whole run. His style hits the sweet spot between minimalist, highly stylized and also incredibly expressive. And given how detailed and also soft the art for World’s End and also The Wake are, it kind of felt like a nice break away from a semblance of realism that is generally found in those other issues.

Everyone has shared some really great work from Hempel, but I just want to highlight 2 points that I find delightful about his work for TKO.

First, I love how Dream’s castle changes throughout the series based on his mood. I love how Hempel draws it in this arc:

Next, I absolutely adore how detailed and emotive he makes Matthew throughout this arc as well:

It contrasts nicely with how minimal he sometimes portrays Dream and other characters like this fav panel of Mazikeen:

As a graphic designer, his style here is just totally up my alley.

Now, if we were voting on how Death is portrayed, I think that Bachalo would have really given Marc a run for his money for my vote:

Pitting these two artists against each other is a tough one. Whilst Bachalo only pencilled one issue for The Sandman, many will know him from his iconic take on Death in "The High Cost of Living" and "The Time of Your Life". Alas, it's only about The Sandman this year...

Marc Hempel created the art for The Kindly Ones (bar two issues), and we probably don't need to say any more since his style is so immediately recognisable.
