I was tagged by the lovely @wingyenart to share 5 of my favourite creations & tag 5 people. thank you! 💖

umm I’ll tag only 2 ppl, namely @magxy, @thefailureartist if you want to! don’t hate me pls :D

so picking favourites is difficult because painting is an eternal source of frustration for me which is why this took me *checks calendar* 7 days?? lol no my internet connection was whack & didn’t let me post. it’s back now though.

1) I’ll have to pick Jiang Cheng. He took me 14 days & I will not allow myself to be more dissatisfied than satisfied with the result. I like the way his eyes turned out the most. For a long time there was still his hand with Zidian in the picture but it looked too attention grabbing imo & you don’t even want to know how detailed I went with the cloth until I dropped a water bucket over his shoulders (｡T ω T｡)

2) Nie Huaisang took me through hell & back :D I’m not happy that the transition from his eyesocket to the bridge of his nose is so harsh but ehh I like his expression! Whenever I look at this, I remember that he smiled in my draft & had his wisps & then I watched Fatal Journey for the first time. :))

3) Isabela - I’m really happy with how the earring & the hand looks, especially the nails. This started as a nighttime piece & I wanted her to stand at Kirkwall’s pier but a) my nighttime colouring needs more work & b) I still cannot squeeze a good background into a portrait.

I miss her.

4) The Outsider - I really leaned on Cedric Peyravernay’s concept art for this.

What I like about this most is the way I used colour in it. I didn’t touch fleshy colours from the start. I just built it up like I would traditionally & it changed A LOT in my approach to colouring digital art.

5) My film studies, actually. They taught me EVEN MORE about how my old approach to digital art sucked bc this is older & slapped me & made me embrace the chicken scratches. Also I really enjoyed working on the trio’s faces which is why I put them here as placeholders.

this was actually quite challenging bc of the above mentioned (me, looking at my archive: i’m supposed to like my own art? *screams in agony*) but I made it, hooray ＼(￣▽￣)／

Sorry it's taken me a few days to reply to this, anon! I've been busy, but also...this is such a hard question to answer, omg. Like, no matter how many people I list here, I'm positive I'll forget folks, because there are just. SO MANY. Amazing artists in the MDZS fandom? SO SO MANY? I can't even, there are so many people who I get excited when I see "oh THEY made a new piece!" So this is list is far from exhaustive, I'm sure I'm forgetting many wonderful folks, but my personal favorites are... First, my friends! @candicewright @alychelms @xiejie-liubo @aybara-perrin @sweetlittlevampire @cobaltmoony @iouii @wifiwuxians ...there are surely others but those are folks I'm either mutuals with on here, or with whom I chat regularly, and who's art I love. (if I left you out: it's not you. my memory is a sieve. asks like this are hard. absolutely no one is being omitted intentionally and I'm sorry.)

I run an art side blog. I've seen literally thousands of different artists doing tens of thousands of pieces for MDZS fandom, and I love every single one in different ways. I adore art. Flat out. I always have and I always will. I actually hate singling people out, because I don't want anyone to EVER feel discouraged because they're not on a list like this. Everyone should feel supported and encouraged to know - if you create? I promise, I love what you create, and I want you to keep creating. These are just the ones that spring to mind and who caught my eye when I scrolled my list...but my list has 3,252 artists on it, and generally at least one more gets added every single day so like honestly. I could as easily pick 20, or 100, or 1,000, of my favorite stars in the sky, then really single out a list of my favorite artists. If you asked me this exact same question tomorrow I could list a score of completely different people and still be telling the absolute truth that they're also my favorites.

Thank you, artists everywhere - those in MDZS fandom and in every other fandom. I live and breathe your work. You make my experience of fandom better every single day, and I can't thank you enough.

So!! I was tagged by @wingyenart​ to share 5 of my favorite creations and to tag 5 people.

In general I don’t tend to tag people in this kind of thing, especially not people I don’t know, but anyone who sees this and wants to share please consider urself tagged by me!!

In no particular order:

1) A very recent one but. I’m very pleased with how it came out, especially with the green which. I find hard to work with. My favourite bit is probably the geometric bits on his shoulders, but I’m also very happy with the hair.

2) Also relatively recent (barring quarantine time nonsense), this self-portrait that kind of got me back into drawing this year. It was a bit of experiment with a new technique and style, so my favourite bit is the way that worked out!!

3) One of my first attempts at drawing anything cql-related, I’m still really pleased with it. I usually don’t go this sketchy and abstract, or neon-bright with colours, and I haven’t managed to do it since, but I love how it looks here!!

4) It’s from a couple years ago, but I’m still super in love with this thing, which is also my icon. Looking at this always kind of makes me want to work in black and white again, tho I do think the reference I used for this made it better than most for that kind of style.

5) This is also a little older, but I’m still very pleased with the way the vibrancy of the shadows came out!!

i’ve only been making gifs for about two months and i’ve posted a couple of pieces of random fanart so it’s weird thinking of myself as a creator :’) i’m not gonna get too sappy but thank you all for being so kind 💕

my 5 fave works are under the cut!

1. xue yang’s smirk slipping

you know that post that’s like ‘girl help in order to see the content i want i have to make it myself?’ b/c that’s this post 

one thing that i find interesting about xue yang is how he masks his trauma and when/why he lets that mask down. i’m gonna stop myself from writing a novel on xy in this post but know that i have many incoherent thoughts on this ghjkl;’

anyway this is my favorite gifset i’ve made so far and i’m really glad that people liked it :’’)

2. villainous friends

villainous friends! two of my top three favorite characters exchanging foreboding glances! i love subtle foreshadowing that you completely forget about until a you do a rewatch

this was my first attempt at making a gifset with different scenes, all with very different lighting and coloring. it was...... a struggle! but i learned a lot and i like how it turned out

3. look mom shijie i’m on tv

i love this little interaction between wwx and jyl! it’s adorable that he waves the deadly weapon that kills both her and her husband :)

there’s some details of this interaction that i hadn’t noticed before making this (jzx looking away b/c he’s a disaster, lwj looking away respectfully, jyl trying to cover her laugh!) i think making gifs has made me appreciate little details like this a lot more

4. xiao xingception

sjy acting as whx’s rendition of xy acting as xxc will never stop being impressive to me. 

i had this queued and decided to completely recolor the last two gifs like 15 or 20 minutes before it posted. which was very dumb. but it looked a lot better so it was worth it despite raising my blood pressure

5. homewrecker (affectionate)

if i wasn’t concerned with this not showing up in the tags, i would’ve linked the acoustic version of homewrecker by marina and the diamonds. alas! 

the coloring of this scene is cold and somber and so very ~blue~ so making it warmer was a challenge! but i like how it turned out in the end! 

bonus?

this is from the first gifset i ever made and tbh! it’s not great! but it was an experiment that led to me finding a new hobby so i love it regardless :)

1. Planning

This was a request for the mdzsnet 1 year anniversary so I wanted to try something different from my usual gif-making style and also put more emphasis on the text. Feast your eyes on my super sophisticated planning methodology:

No braincells were hurt or utilized in the process lol. I keep a little notepad by my computer so I can jot down ideas and mostly it’s a collection of barely legible scribbles. Usually I have a basic visual idea of what I want in my head and just write down key words/sketch to help me remember. For this one I knew I wanted a dramatic drop shadow and went from there.

2. Creation

Most of the time I use Photoshop CC from start to finish, but this time I used Illustrator CC to make the long drop shadow a vector so I could play with the scale without worrying about losing quality (here’s a quick tutorial on how it’s done). After finding a red palette I liked, I broke out the watercolor brushes and created each panel (Photoshop artboards are great for planning):

Here it’s a lot of masking and fiddling with colors + transparency until I’m happy with the overall look. Ctrl + Z gets used a TON in this phase.

After that it’s a matter of adding in the animation. I generally screen record with Bandicam or download from YouTube with VLC media player. Here’s what the layers panel looks like after everything has been trimmed and adjusted:

The frames were set to linear burn blend mode, and I used Curves and Black & White layers to get that sharp contrast. Also a lot of fiddling around in this step. Listen, gif making in general involves hours of fiddling around 

3. Posting

I always let my posts sit in drafts for at least 1-2 days before looking at them again. That way I can see them with fresh eyes and spot any mistakes I missed while making it. I also check how it looks on both desktop and mobile, especially if a set/edit has text (sometimes it’s perfectly readable on desktop but on mobile it needs magnifying glasses). Finally, it’s time to click the Post button and let your baby leave the nest  |･д･)ﾉ

1. Planning

Layout 

to be very honest I didn’t do much planning for this set beforehand and just made decisions as I went along

the request was wangxian to the lyrics of Anyone Else by Pvris

so i went to look up the song to give it a listen and check out what song lyrics were inspiring enough and that I could use

and then I decided on this: 'Cause I could touch a hundred thousand souls But none of them would ever feel like home And no matter how far and wide I roam You're the only one I'll ever know

I didn’t have any particular layout idea in mind either, so I just went to my inspiration tag to see if I could find anything that could fit into the four gifs

I ended up getting some inspiration from: this and this for shape clipping layout  this for alternating sans serif and script lock-up typography

Scene Selection

when selecting scenes, I try to find those that can match the layout I have in mind but also the quote

the most obvious scenes were the one for the third line, because I could picture wwx waving to lwj as he walks off in episode 50 for that one

I had no clue what scenes to use for the second and fourth lines so I went to my folder of screen recorded clips and just searched “wangxian” to see what I could use

line 2: I selected wangxian on the bridge in episode 35, although the big lwj clip is from the snowing scene in episode episode 43

line 4: lwj and wwx on xiao ping guo from episode 43 + shiny stars as a third overlay layer to add some jazz

line 1: since it mentioned “hundred thousand souls”, I narrowed down some characters whose lives wwx had touched, and searched for them in my folder of clips as well so that I could crop them into the little diamonds later

2. Creation

okay I’m gonna be lazy 

I’d done a tutorial for the shape clipping for this set before so I’m just gonna link it here :p

I didn’t do the gifs in order though, I did gif 2 first, then went to gif 3, then gif 4, then back to gif 1, since one involved the most number of clips

3. Posting

as my personal preference, I usually export my gifs as adaptive + pattern

then I uploaded the four gifs into my drafts and did a short write-up where I used a few other lines of lyrics I thought fit wangxian quite well

and I also usually prefer to make the size of the write-up small just to tease all of your eyesight

and that’s it!

mdzs x four horsemen of the apocalypse [x]: I keep pulling this one back up, just because of the amount of work and planning that went into it. my old typography style tho *closes eyes and fades into oblivion*

mdzs x four gentlemen [x]: tbh in reality the four plants don’t have very definite and defining characteristics, so this one’s in my top 5 because of the amount of digging into chinese websites and translating I had to do just so I could filter out enough characteristics that seemed distinct enough (;^_^A

wwx’s birthday [x]

the old guard x latin quotes [x]: before this my overlay sets were... ew, but for this it was like my third eye finally opened (ﾉ･o･)ﾉ

top 30 qiao chusheng smiles [x]: to quote my own tags “but omg i was smiling throughout doing this” “thinking ‘yep this is my peak’” “’this is why I learned how to gif’” “’all for this set’”

mdzs x mbti series [sp] [sj] [nf] [nt] [all]: I’d been dragging my feet over this series for a really long time because mbti is really subjective, but after a while I just went heck it and dived into the planning and typing and conceptualising of the layout before the actual making of the gifs so when it was all done I felt like a part of my soul had left me and descended into hell

This is my favorite scene from the novel. I wish we could have had it in The Untamed.
