Smith-Magenis Syndrome is a debilitating condition that only a handful of other children in Iowa have and which can require around the clock care and assistance.
As a young mom, Heather relied on Area Education Agencies to help access treatments and get her daughter the care she needed to progress with schooling. Then, Republicans in the state announced they would be slashing funding for the program and leave Iowa moms without fundamental resources to care for children with disabilities.
So Heather worked around the clock to try and save the program. At the last minute, Republicans rammed the bill through – and her GOP Representative was too busy to show up and even vote on the bill. Now, she’s running to replace him (this is the most flippable seat in the entire state – we were just 500 votes away from flipping it blue!) to make sure Iowa parents and children have someone in the state government who will show up and fight for them – and reverse the state’s TOTAL abortion ban. If elected she will be the only pro-choice nurse in the Iowa State House”.
