Under the Vines (2021 - )
Two city people manage to inherit a failing vineyard in New Zealand, but neither of them know a thing about hard work and they despise each other.
This is such a delightful show that I have recently come across. I have so far watched Series 1, and it is a lovely, quirky and feel-good show. If you loved programmes like '800 Words', then you will love this too. Watching it feels like being in New Zealand and being on a journey with the characters. A really delightful show worth checking out.

Discover the Joy of Wine Tasting: Master the Art of Refining Your Palate
Tumblr media
Wine tasting offers more than just a delightful experienceā€”itā€™s an art that deepens your understanding and appreciation of flavours. Whether youā€™re a novice or a seasoned enthusiast, refining your palate transforms how you enjoy wine. Letā€™s explore how to approach wine tasting with intention and finesse.
Build a Strong Foundation: Start with the Basics
Understanding the fundamentals of wine tasting helps you engage with each glass more meaningfully.
Recognise Different Wine Types
Familiarise yourself with popular wine varieties like Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Malbec. Each type offers distinct characteristics that shape its flavour profile.
Learn the Wine-Making Process
Knowing how wine moves from vine to bottle reveals the techniques that influence its taste. Understanding the role of fermentation, barrel ageing, and grape selection sharpens your ability to identify quality wines.
Engage Your Senses: Taste Beyond the Glass
Wine tasting activates sight, smell, and taste. Using all your senses allows you to experience wine in its entirety.
Assess the Colour and Clarity
Hold the glass against a light surface to examine its hue and brightness. Rich colours often indicate the wineā€™s depth, while clarity signals its refinement.
Swirl to Unlock Aromas
Swirling the wine introduces oxygen, releasing its hidden aromas. This simple step highlights the complexity of the wineā€™s bouquet.
Sniff Before You Sip
Inhale deeply to identify fruity, floral, or earthy notes. Each aroma provides clues about the wineā€™s origin and style, setting the stage for the tasting.
Taste with Precision: Savour Each Sip
Tasting wine requires focus. Every sip offers layers of flavour and texture to explore.
Sip Slowly and Observe
Take small sips, allowing the wine to coat your palate. Note how the flavours evolve and linger after swallowing.
Introduce Air While Tasting
Draw in air with each sip to amplify the wineā€™s depth. This technique highlights subtle nuances often missed during casual drinking.
Compare Different Wines
Tasting wines side by side sharpens your palate. Observing contrasts in acidity, sweetness, and body helps you understand what resonates with your taste preferences.
Document Your Journey: Keep a Tasting Journal
Recording your wine experiences ensures you remember what you enjoy and why.
Capture Key Details
Note the wineā€™s name, region, vintage, and tasting impressions. Focus on aromas, flavours, and the wineā€™s finish.
Reflect on Patterns
Review your journal entries to uncover trends. Identifying consistent preferences, like a fondness for crisp whites or bold reds, guides future choices.
Prepare Your Palate: Tips for a Clean Slate
A clean palate ensures you experience the true flavours of each wine without interference.
Refresh Between Tastings
Use plain water or unsalted crackers to cleanse your palate. This prevents overlapping flavours from clouding your judgement.
Avoid Strong Foods
Avoid consuming garlic, onions, or spicy dishes before wine tasting. These overpowering flavours mask the delicate notes in wine.
Stay Hydrated During Tastings
Wine tasting often involves sipping multiple varieties, which dries out your mouth. Drinking water between tastings maintains hydration and refreshes your palate.
Elevate Your Wine Journey
Wine tasting offers a pathway to discovery, allowing you to appreciate the craft and complexity of winemaking. By engaging your senses, documenting your experiences, and preparing carefully, you deepen your enjoyment and knowledge with every glass.
Share Your Wine Tips and Stories
Whatā€™s your favourite wine-tasting memory? Do you have tips for refining your palate? Share your thoughts in the comments below, and pass this guide along to anyone eager to elevate their wine journey!
FAQ: Answering Your Wine Tasting Questions
How do I choose wines to start my tasting journey?
Begin with a mix of reds, whites, and sparkling wines from different regions. Sampling a variety introduces you to diverse flavour profiles.
Should I always swirl wine before drinking?
Swirling enhances aromas, so itā€™s a helpful step, especially for more complex wines. Avoid over-swishing, as it may appear overly fussy in casual settings.
Whatā€™s the best way to organise a wine-tasting event at home?
Invite friends, choose 3ā€“5 wines with distinct characteristics, and provide palate cleansers like water and crackers. Encourage guests to share their observations for a fun, educational experience.
