how to uninstall an air conditioner by yourself: a belated instruction manual
we've mostly covered how to install a window AC unit by yourself, but what about taking it out for the winter? well, a couple years ago I uncovered the absolute best way to do this, and I'm finally ready to share my secrets with tumblr.
step one: wait until it stops raining. this step is really, really important. you do not want to take a slippery window unit out by yourself.
step two: forget step one
step three:
Tumblr media
step four: ......
step five: the best part about living in new york city is that all of your worst nightmares eventually come true?
step six: try to pull it up yourself?
step seven: this is. not working.
step eight: post on instagram
Tumblr media
step nine: call the super. accidentally call the super's son while he's driving because the super has like 5 phone numbers and you don't know which is which. fuck fuck fuck.
step ten: the super is fucking. at his other job.
step eleven: the super from next door is coming over. your super warns you not to be afraid of him (strange man, you live alone, etc). this is unnecessary. he has a Maryland license plate and you've already made extremely awkward conversation with him.
step twelve: thank christ you've talked to this guy, even if he thought you were insane. you're clinging onto normality like, I don't know, an air conditioner by a cord hanging out the window.
step thirteen: watch the super from next door pull your window AC unit up by its cord like he's having a regular day at the fucking office.
step fourteen: eventually you will live this down.
step fifteen:
Tumblr media
step sixteen:
Tumblr media
step seventeen: at least you can wave hello to the super next door now?
step eighteen: surprise! this is actually a completely different guide!
how to make friends in new york city
step one: nearly drop your air conditioner out of the fucking window
(oh p.s. you are required by law to have a bracket under your AC so this doesn't happen, the why I didn't is long story, it has to do with not being over the street and not being sure if I was allowed to drill into my windowsill. anyway I got one after this.)

What a lovely home. It’s a charming 1915 Victorian in Baltimore, Maryland. 4bd. 2ba., $500K. Not fully thrilled with the remodeling, though. Take a look.
Tumblr media
The front porch is so large, it looks like a room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quite a large entrance, also. Isn’t that window amazing? The huge mirror is original to the home, also.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Love the cabinetry in the kitchen. There’s an original oak built-in cupboard and the island is made from an antique sideboard.
Tumblr media
Cute everyday eating area has a window seat, but it looks a little too modern with sliding mirror doors.
Tumblr media
There’s also a dining room. Columns appear throughout the home and I like the subtlety- They’re not overly ornate and don’t overtake the rooms.
Tumblr media
Like this idea, painting the top molding an accent color.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nicely sized bds. with original floors, but they’re so plain.
Tumblr media
This bd. is adorable. Notice the original light fixtures, too.
Tumblr media
Nice vintage touches. The tub is original, though.
Tumblr media
So, that’s where the tower is. Clearly this was remodeled and the tower now has modern windows. It may not have had a open ceiling originally.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This looks like a newly remodeled area of the home.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But look what they preserved. The walls and floor are new stone, but that old stone wall in the back is original. I think I would’ve configured it in a different way, and I wouldn’t have installed a drop ceiling. The fountain is coming from an underground spring- it’s such a fantastic feature that it should’ve been displayed more prominently and I don’t like the doors, either.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The home also features a large patio and 1.15 acres of land.

Shhhh
August crept in as July went out in a blaze and, as usual, August has been still.  Isn’t the first week of this month almost always calm? The bugs seem to sing louder because everything else hushes.  I’ve always wondered what the animal kingdom knows that we don’t. The early harvests have started and farmers are busy; even in home gardens some crops are looking middle-aged and tired.  Flowers are still showing off, they’ll fight to the bitter end of that first frost. Oh, the thought of a frost thrills me.  BUT, I’m grateful for the break in that long string of hot July days. I won’t long for frost I’m going to appreciate forecasts like this.
Tumblr media
Do you see that high temp for Friday? Oh. happy day!  I’m not a fool (often) I know this probably won’t last.  August isn’t afraid to just copy July, but let’s be aware that we are just 27 days from the “ber” months.
Tumblr media
Yesterday I opened the drawer that holds my sweaters and whispered, “Soon...” Another reason to look forward to months that end in ber is that I finally managed to snag a doctor’s appointment!  Well, not a doctor, a nurse practitioner.  I much prefer to see someone who has been through a rigorous med school, a life-changing residency, and perhaps even a fellowship...but beggars can’t be choosers and my name finally came up for an appointment on September 25th.  It’s very hard to establish yourself as a new patient here, so I may arrive with gifts.  I’ll let her know that I’ll rarely darken her door, I just need yearly bloodwork and a mammogram, that’s it.  I’m no trouble.  Well I didn’t used to be, our first year here was a bit of a bear.  I’m hoping that’s all behind us now. Anywho, I’m just about two months from having medical care!  Around here that’s reason to celebrate. I should make a cake. Another reason to celebrate is that I’ve got sunflowers blooming left and right. My view out the kitchen window this morning.
Tumblr media
I thought that Crape Myrtle tree was never going to bloom. It finally burst into flower July 31st.  That’s when I spotted the first blooms, and it’s been going like gangbusters for the last few days.   Really, none of the gardens truly filled in until mid-July.  I’m 725 miles further north than I used to be, sounds like I need to adjust my expectations.  I still have a lot to learn.  The arboretum is having a fall plant sale and I’d like to fill my front bed with purple coneflower. That seems to be reliable around here.  Black-eyed Susan is the state flower so it probably wouldn’t hurt to grab a couple of those too.  Besides, both of those flowers remind me of the prairie, and whether I’m in Alaska, Tennessee, or Maryland’s Eastern Shore, I’m forever a bonnet head.
Tumblr media
Yep, that definitely feels more like me. So I’ll be planting prairie flowers.  Why not?
In keeping with the hurry-up-and-wait theme, we have at last received an installation date for flooring in the upstairs bathrooms. Friday, August 11th - hallelujah! Feels like progress.  I haven’t made any progress at all finding my place here. But I will, I will.  I want so much to volunteer at the library.  I’ve approached them twice with that offer, sharing my background of working in the school library and all that.  I got the same response each time.
Tumblr media
Seriously, I’d expect the same reaction if I greeted them and said, “I like to bite worms in half.”  I’ve become paranoid. Do I stink? Is it because I look like a granny? Am I speaking gibberish?  Apparently that’s not going to be my place.  What a shame, I’ve always found such safety and camaraderie in libraries. I’ve actually considered selling makeup.  I mean, it’s something I know and I’d probably meet like-minded women (if they exist here).  Beauty Counter is a great company, I just really, really don’t want to get involved in any of those MLM schemes. If you’ve ever been stalked by a Mary Kay lady, you’ll understand.  I suppose I’ll just keep being a hermit lady instead.   I’m still hoping to be ready to take some stuff to the Artisans on the Choptank on September 16.  I may have underestimated what it takes to be ready.  I have to be licensed and have a tax number, and I have to have a good way to display everything.  I’ve found plenty of DIY plans for earring and card displays, we’ll see if I can get it all done. If I don’t make that one the next one is December 2nd.  That’s fine, BUT...knowing which market to prepare for is critical.  If I can be ready for September’s then I should be cranking out autumn colored and Halloween earrings.  If it’s December’s market I should be doing winter and Christmas stuff. I don’t want to use up tons of supplies building a fall inventory and not get my tax number in time or something.  Yikes!  What to do what to do? I’ve been busy making earrings in the local high school colors, those might sell in any season. Go, Bulldogs!  Oh well enough of this nonsense.  I’ll sum it all up by saying some things are looking up, some things are disappointing, and hope springs eternal.  In other words, life is behaving like life.   I’m off to soak in a bath and then take the kitties to bed. We’ve got a busy weekend ahead.  The Edgewater gang is coming over and we’ll have some laughs with them. The following weekend we’ll have Little Miss to ourselves while her parents have a bit of an escape, then it’s headlong into the school year.  I can’t believe that she’s starting kindergarten.  I’ve been picking up little dresses (she insists on only wearing dresses) and even some cute shoes to add to her school wardrobe.  These Livie & Luca shoes sparkle!
Tumblr media
They’re so soft and will look cute while taking a beating on the playground.
Okay, I really am off to the bathtub now.  There are lavender bubbles calling my name and a book that needs my attention.  I just started The Shallows by Holly Craig. It’s one of those “first reads” from Amazon.  Prime members get early access (for free!) to a new book.  All genres are offered and I can almost always find something enjoyable.   This one isn’t my usual fare, but I’m two chapters in and I don’t hate it.  The jury is still out though. Have a lovely evening, dear people.  Rest, relax, do something nice for yourself. I’ll come back tomorrow with more meaningless babble and we’ll chat again. Sending out loads of love grab what you need. Stay safe, stay well.
XOXO, Nancy

Light at the end of a very long tunnel
As you may know, shit has been going literally sideways for me for the past couple weeks now (months, actually). I had been so depressed and upset about it all.
I’ve had really very bad luck with trying to find anyone to even come out to look at my house before another rain storm (my gutter issue was unresolved). We had a very dry spring, unusually dry. So, I didn’t have much rain to even worry aobut until the end of June/beginning of July. And Maryland does this cute thing now where when it “rains” it means a drenching downpour of 4″ of rain in an hour. On Sunday, in rained for 20 minutes and we got 2″ of rain. We were running through towels to try to soak up the water that was coming in from the window and flowing under the radiator. I felt bad for me, for my son, for my house.. I cried A LOT over the weekend. Like on and off just sobbing. I talked to so many companies, so many of them didn’t give a shit if I lived or died, if my house flooded, it was more or less like “sorry lady not my problem”. They wanted to upcharge me $100 to even send someone this week... I’ve been pretty broke after all this shit happening so I don’t have the money to just throw at upcharge fees.
I got a missed call Tuesday morning from the guys who I’d used in the past to clean my gutter, his name is Ray. I was so relieved to hear from him. Ray  literally made my entire year because of how kind and generous he’s been with me at a VERY excessively stressful time in my life. There are things going on with me that I can’t even discuss or type to a public audience so just know it’s way deeper than anything surface level... but I just got a much needed gutter replacement from a man who did this work for so, so much less than I could ever find anywhere else. When I say he gave me the deal of a lifetime, he did. He came out, made time, went out of his way to get it done before any other rain storms... he clearly cared. He told me he was inundated with calls and referrals but he wanted to get to me as soon as possible so my “house didn’t crumble”. I told him how we had spent money renting a truck and ladder, spent money on another company to come out and $300 later I was still no closer to a solution. He said “let’s replace it, I’m more than happy to do it”. He quoted me an INSANELY low amount. He refused extra money. I feel very lucky to have been able to know him when I needed him. He did an excellent job and now I have a new 6″ aluminum gutter, upgraded downspout, leaf guard and he installed a fascia board so the gutter is affixed to my house securely and not hanging off the roofing material like before... he said “it’s secure, going nowhere I promise”. This little Turkish man is an ANGEL. I thanked him so many times, I was preparing myself to have to take a loan from my sister for a grand at least and pay her back incrementally. He took pictures and videos to show me exactly what was happening - sent them to me and everything. He’s such a kind soul I hope each side of his pillow is cool, he always merges easily on the highway and he has lots of business for years to come. Honestly.
Ray restored a bit of my faith in humanity. I left him reviews on all major sites to sing his praises.
I’m grappling a little bit on what to do. I want to properly pay him when I get more money but I don’t think he’ll accept it. Do I just sit with the guilt? Let someone do something extremely kind for me and accept it? I don’t know.

Concrete Slab Cutting Services in Maryland: A Comprehensive Guide
Concrete slab cutting is a crucial service in Maryland’s bustling construction industry. From residential home improvements to large-scale commercial projects, cutting through concrete with precision is often essential for plumbing, electrical installations, expansions, and more. With Maryland’s robust mix of urban, suburban, and rural projects, concrete cutting services play a key role in ensuring structural integrity and project efficiency. This article dives into everything you need to know about concrete slab cutting services in Maryland, including why these services are needed, what they entail, and how to choose a reliable provider. visit concrete slab cutting service Maryland
1. What is Concrete Slab Cutting?
Concrete slab cutting is a specialized process of precisely cutting through concrete surfaces or slabs. This may be necessary for a variety of reasons, such as accessing underground utilities, creating openings for new structures, or modifying existing foundations. The work is done by skilled professionals using high-powered tools like saws with diamond-coated blades, which provide the precision needed for accurate cuts without compromising structural stability.
Types of Concrete Cutting Techniques
Concrete slab cutting isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. Several techniques are available, each suited to specific needs:
Flat Sawing: This is the most common technique, used for horizontal surfaces like floors and roadways.
Wall Sawing: For creating precise openings in walls for doors, windows, or mechanical systems.
Core Drilling: Essential for creating circular holes in concrete, often for electrical wiring, plumbing, and HVAC installations.
Wire Sawing: A technique typically used for large-scale cuts, where other sawing methods aren’t feasible.
2. When Do You Need Concrete Slab Cutting Services?
Concrete slab cutting is required in a variety of situations across both residential and commercial settings. Common scenarios include:
Renovation Projects: When remodeling a home or building, concrete cutting is often necessary to make room for new installations or modifications.
Road Repairs and Infrastructure: Many of Maryland’s roads, highways, and bridges require concrete cutting for repair and maintenance.
Utility Installations: Installing plumbing, electrical, or drainage systems often requires precise concrete cutting to access or modify the foundation.
Emergency Repairs: Concrete slab cutting is sometimes needed for emergency repairs, such as fixing leaks, broken pipes, or structural damage.
3. Benefits of Professional Concrete Slab Cutting Services
Opting for a professional concrete slab cutting service in Maryland offers numerous benefits. These experts are equipped with the right tools, techniques, and experience to execute precise cuts safely and efficiently. Here’s why hiring a professional service is advantageous:
Precision and Safety: Professional concrete cutters use advanced equipment and follow stringent safety protocols. This ensures that the cuts are precise, minimizing the risk of structural damage.
Time Efficiency: With specialized tools and experience, professional concrete cutting services can complete projects faster than non-professional attempts.
Cost-Effectiveness: Although hiring professionals may seem costly upfront, it often saves money in the long run by avoiding errors, material waste, and potential repair costs.
Environmentally Friendly: Professional services often use methods that minimize dust and debris, helping to maintain a cleaner, safer work environment.
Regulatory Compliance: Maryland, like other states, has specific regulations for construction and renovation projects. Professional concrete cutters are knowledgeable about these requirements, ensuring that your project is compliant.
4. How to Choose a Reliable Concrete Slab Cutting Service in Maryland
Selecting the right concrete cutting service is crucial for a successful project. Here are some key factors to consider when choosing a provider:
Experience and Expertise: Look for companies with years of experience and specialized knowledge in concrete cutting. An experienced service provider will have a solid understanding of Maryland’s unique construction needs.
Reputation and Reviews: Check online reviews, testimonials, and ratings to gauge the quality of service provided by a company. Positive feedback from previous clients is a good sign of reliability.
Equipment and Technology: The best concrete cutting services use advanced, high-quality equipment that can handle a range of materials and depths.
Safety Practices: Concrete cutting can be hazardous. Choose a company that prioritizes safety, with employees trained in OSHA standards and using protective gear.
Licensed and Insured: Ensure that the company is properly licensed and carries insurance, which can protect you from liability in case of accidents or damage.
5. Leading Concrete Slab Cutting Service Providers in Maryland
Maryland is home to several reputable concrete slab cutting service providers. Some top companies include:
Penhall Company: Known for its nationwide presence and extensive range of services, Penhall offers concrete cutting, scanning, and demolition services in Maryland. With a focus on quality and safety, Penhall is a trusted choice for complex projects.

Atlantic Concrete Cutting, Inc.: Serving Maryland and neighboring states, Atlantic Concrete Cutting is well-regarded for its experience, advanced technology, and reliable results.
6. Costs of Concrete Slab Cutting in Maryland
The cost of concrete slab cutting services varies depending on factors such as project complexity, slab thickness, cutting technique, and location. Here’s a rough guide:
Basic Cuts: For simple cuts (up to 4 inches deep), rates typically range from $3 to $7 per linear foot.
Medium Depth Cuts: For cuts between 4 and 12 inches, prices may go from $7 to $15 per foot.
Deep or Specialized Cuts: Complex cuts, including core drilling, wire sawing, or cuts deeper than 12 inches, often range from $15 to $30 per foot or more.
Additional costs may include travel fees for projects located farther from the provider’s base and any permit fees required by local jurisdictions in Maryland.
Conclusion

With various cutting techniques and specialized equipment, these services ensure precision, safety, and efficiency in all types of construction and renovation projects. Severe storms kill at least 4 in Houston, knock out power to 900,000 homes and businesses (AP) Fast-moving thunderstorms pummeled southeastern Texas on Thursday for the second time this month, killing at least four people, blowing out windows in high-rise buildings, downing trees and knocking out power to more than 900,000 homes and businesses in the Houston area. Streets were flooded, and trees and power lines were down across the region. Mayor John Whitmire said wind speeds reached 100 mph (160 kph), “with some twisters.” He said the powerful gusts were reminiscent of 2008’s Hurricane Ike, which pounded the city. Hundreds of windows were shattered at downtown hotels and office buildings, with glass littering the streets below, and the state was sending Department of Public Safety officers to secure the area.
Crew trapped on Baltimore ship, seven weeks after bridge collapse (BBC) As a controlled explosion rocked the Dali on Monday, nearly two dozen sailors remained on board, below deck in the massive ship’s hull. The simultaneous blasts sent pieces of Baltimore’s once iconic Francis Scott Key Bridge into the dark waters of Maryland’s Patapsco River, seven weeks after its collapse left six people on the bridge dead and the Dali marooned. Authorities—and the crew—hope that the demolition will mark the beginning of the end of a long process that has left the 21 men on board trapped and cut off from the world, thousands of miles from their homes. The crew, made up of 20 Indians and a Sri Lankan national, has been unable to disembark because of visa restrictions, a lack of required shore passes and parallel ongoing investigations by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and FBI. According to Joshua Messick, executive director of the Baltimore International Seafarers’ Center, the crew has been left largely without communication with the outside world for “a couple of weeks” after their mobile phones were confiscated by the FBI as part of the investigation. “They can’t do any online banking. They can’t pay their bills at home. They don’t have any of their data or anyone’s contact information, so they’re really isolated right now,” Mr Messick said. “They just can’t reach out to the folks they need to, or even look at pictures of their children before they go to sleep. It’s really a sad situation.”
The first Mexican taco stand to get a Michelin star (AP) Newly minted Michelin-starred chef Arturo Rivera Martínez stood over an insanely hot grill Wednesday at the first Mexican taco stand ever to get a coveted star from the French dining guide, and did exactly the same thing he’s been doing for 20 years: searing meat. Though Michelin representatives came by Wednesday to present him with one of the company’s heavy, full-sleeved, pristine white chef’s jackets, he didn’t put it on: In this tiny, 10-foot by 10-foot (3-meter by 3-meter) business, the heat makes the meat. And the heat is intense. At Mexico City’s Tacos El Califa de León, in the scruffy-bohemian San Rafael neighborhood, there are only four things on the menu, all tacos. Rivera Martínez is probably the only Michelin-starred chef who, when asked what beverage should accompany his food, answers “I like a Coke.” The prices are quite high by Mexican standards. A single, generous but not huge taco costs nearly $5. But many customers are convinced it’s the best, if not the cheapest, in the city.
Religious diversity blooms in once-atheist Cuba (AP) The 1959 Castro-led revolution installed an atheist, Communist government that sought to replace the Catholic Church as the guiding force in the lives of Cubans. But 65 years later, religion seems omnipresent in Cuba, in dazzling diversity. The bells toll on Catholic churches and the call to prayer summons Muslims in downtown Havana. Buddhists chant mantras as they gather at the home of a jazz musician. Jews savor rice, beans and other Cuban staples for Sabbath dinner. Santeria devotees immerse the senses as they dance and slap drums. It’s also visible in the growing ranks of evangelicals who worship across the island, or in the pilgrims who travel to the remote shrine of Cuba’s patron saint in the shadow of the Sierra Maestra mountains to ask for health and prosperity during a wrenching economic crisis. Critics say Cuba is still falling short on religious tolerance. But significant progress has been achieved; some call it a time of a Cuban religious revival.
Haiti gears up for battle (Foreign Policy) In the last two weeks, a string of military planes have arrived in Port-au-Prince with equipment to build facilities that will soon house an international stabilization force. The United Nations-authorized mission will be led by some 1,000 police officers from Kenya and supporting personnel from Chile, Jamaica, Grenada, Paraguay, Burundi, Chad, Nigeria, and Mauritius. Kenyan officers are due to arrive in Haiti around the time of Kenyan President William Ruto’s state visit to Washington later this month, the Miami Herald reported. A towering challenge awaits the force. Haiti’s weeks-old transitional government, which will coordinate with the officers, is already plagued by infighting. The gangs wreaking havoc in Haiti, meanwhile, have often cooperated. Gang leader Jimmy Chérizier, known Barbecue, told NPR in an interview on Saturday that the foreign forces should prepare themselves for a long battle.
Massive Ukrainian drone attack on Crimea (AP) A massive Ukrainian drone attack on Crimea early Friday caused power cutoffs in the city of Sevastopol and set a refinery ablaze in southern Russia, Russian authorities said. The Russian Defense Ministry said air defenses downed 51 Ukrainian drones over Crimea, another 44 over the Krasnodar region and six over the Belgorod region. It said Russian warplanes and patrol boats also destroyed six sea drones in the Black Sea. Mikhail Razvozhayev, the governor of Sevastopol, which is the main base for Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, said the drone attack damaged the city’s power plant. He said it could take a day to fully restore energy supplies.
China unveils 'historic' steps to stabilise crisis-hit property sector (Reuters) China announced "historic" steps on Friday to stabilise its crisis-hit property sector, with the central bank facilitating 1 trillion yuan ($138 billion) in extra funding and easing mortgage rules, and local governments set to buy "some" apartments. Investors hoped the measures marked the beginning of more decisive government intervention to compensate for waning demand for new and old apartments, to slow down falling prices and to reduce a growing stock of unsold homes. Analysts have long called for the government to step in with its own purchases to prop up a sector which at its peak accounted for a fifth of GDP and remains a major drag on the world's second-biggest economy.
Taiwan is selling more to the US than China in major shift away from Beijing (AP) Whether it’s tapioca balls or computer chips, Taiwan is stretching toward the United States and away from China—the world’s No. 2 economy that threatens to take the democratically ruled island by force if necessary. These changes at a time of an intensifying China-U.S. rivalry reflect Taiwan’s efforts to reduce its reliance on Beijing and insulate itself from Chinese pressure while forging closer economic and trade ties with the United States, its strongest ally. The shift also is taking place as China’s economic growth has been weak and global businesses are looking to diversify following supply chain disruptions during the pandemic.
Violence and impunity (NYT) Last October, an Israeli settler in the West Bank set a Palestinian home on fire. In January, a mob of settlers chased a truck driver and two of his workers, sending all three to the hospital. And last fall, a settler shot a Palestinian in the stomach in front of an Israeli soldier. Yet the authorities have not charged any of these settlers—or others who have attacked West Bank residents—with crimes. These stories come from a multiyear investigation that my colleagues Ronen Bergman and Mark Mazzetti have just published in The Times Magazine. In it, they document how violent factions within the settler movement have repeatedly received protection from the Israeli government despite attacks against Palestinians—and even against Israeli officials who tried to challenge the settlers. “A long history of crime without punishment,” Ronen and Mark write, “threatens not only Palestinians living in the occupied territories but also the State of Israel itself.” Their story, they explain, “is an account of a sometimes criminal nationalistic movement that has been allowed to operate with impunity and gradually move from the fringes to the mainstream of Israeli society.”
Israel Sending More Troops to Rafah Amid Warnings of Famine in Gaza (NYT) Israel said on Thursday that it would send more troops to Rafah, the southernmost city in Gaza, which has become the focal point in the war between Israel and Hamas. The announcement signaled that Israel intends to press deeper into Rafah despite international concerns about the threat to civilians from a full-scale invasion of the city, where more than a million displaced people had been sheltering. Rafah is the most important logistics hub in the Gaza Strip, the crucial gateway for most of the food, medicine and other aid that has entered the enclave of 2.2 million people. The fighting has led to the closure of a border crossing between Rafah and Egypt. “The threat of famine in Gaza never loomed larger,” the United Nations’ World Food Program warned this week.
South Africa asks U.N. court to order Israel to halt Rafah assault (Washington Post) South Africa made a searing and impassioned plea for the International Court of Justice to order Israel to cease all military operations in the Gaza Strip, arguing that its assault on Rafah and closure of key crossings are aimed at destroying “the essential foundations of Palestinian life” there. South Africa brought a case against Israel late last year, accusing it of violating the Genocide Convention in its prosecution of the war.
Scientists find buried branch of the Nile that may have carried pyramids’ stones (Guardian) Scientists have discovered a long-buried branch of the Nile River that once flowed alongside more than 30 pyramids in Egypt, potentially solving the mystery of how ancient Egyptians transported the massive stone blocks to build the monuments. The 40-mile-long (64km) river branch, which ran by the Giza pyramid complex among other wonders, was hidden under desert and farmland for millennia, according to a study revealing the find on Thursday. The existence of the river would explain why the 31 pyramids were built in a chain along a now inhospitable desert strip in the Nile valley between 4,700 and 3,700 years ago. The once mighty river was increasingly covered in sand, potentially starting during a major drought about 4,200 years ago, the scientists suggested. The Giza pyramids stood on a plateau roughly a kilometre from the banks of the river.
