Been an Ubuntu Linux LTS user since 2006! I left Windows XT that year, as it crashed into a blue-gray dust in the wind, and I never looked back. Even tried WINE for a while, so I could use Ubuntu to run a Web design & build business I had in 2009 with the windows based app, Dreamweaver MX. I could never convince any of my clients that needed their Windows Vista, Windows ME, etc. cleaned up from viruses & Ads & Trojans, to switch over to Linux. They were terrified of it...even though it was easier to use than any WINDOSE product ever was. Long Live "Linus Unix"!!!

I don't think people realize how absolutely wild Linux is.

Here we have an Operating system that now has 100 different varieties, all of them with their own little features and markets that are also so customizable that you can literally choose what desktop environment you want. Alongside that it is the OS of choice for Supercomputers, most Web servers, and even tiny little toy computers that hackers and gadget makers use. It is the Operating System running on most of the world's smartphones. That's right. Android is a version of Linux.

It can run on literally anything up to and including a potato, and as of now desktop Linux Distros like Ubuntu and Mint are so easily to use and user friendly that technological novices can use them. This Operating system has had App stores since the 90s.

Oh, and what's more, this operating system was fuckin' built by volunteers and users alongside businesses and universities because they needed an all purpose operating system so they built one themselves and released it for free. If you know how to, you can add to this.

Oh, and it's founder wasn't some corporate hotshot. It's an introverted Swedish-speaking Finn who, while he was a student, started making his own Operating system after playing around with someone else's OS. He was going to call it Freax but the guy he got server space from named the folder of his project "Linux" (Linus Unix) and the name stuck. He operates this project from his Home office which is painted in a colour used in asylums. Man's so fucking introverted he developed the world's biggest code repo, Git, so he didn't have to deal with drama and email.

Steam adopted it meaning a LOT of games now natively run in Linux and what cannot be run natively can be adapted to run. It's now the OS used on their consoles (Steam Deck) and to this, a lot of people have found games run better on Linux than on Windows. More computers run Steam on Linux than MacOS.

On top of that the Arctic World Archive (basically the Svalbard Seed bank, but for Data) have this OS saved in their databanks so if the world ends the survivors are going to be using it.

On top of this? It's Free! No "Freemium" bullshit, no "pay to unlock" shit, no licenses, no tracking or data harvesting. If you have an old laptop that still works and a 16GB USB drive, you can go get it and install it and have a functioning computer because it uses less fucking resources than Windows. Got a shit PC? Linux Mint XFCE or Xubuntu is lightweight af. This shit is stopping eWaste.

What's more, it doesn't even scrimp on style. KDE, XFCE, Gnome, Cinnamon, all look pretty and are functional and there's even a load of people who try make their installs look pretty AF as a hobby called "ricing" with a subreddit (/r/unixporn) dedicated to it.

Linux is fucking wild.

Dropbox dropped

Dropbox hat anscheinend Geldmangel. Oder die Halskrankheit (selbigen nicht vollzukriegen). Ich weiß es nicht. Jedenfalls hat man die Nutzungsbedingungen radikal geändert, so dass Dropbox für mich weitgehend nutzlos geworden ist. Das hängt natürlich von den persönlichen Bedürfnissen ab. Viele können bestimmt immer noch super damit zurechtkommen, ich jedoch nicht mehr. 

Für mich am bedeutendsten ist die Änderung, dass man seine Daten nur noch mit drei Geräten synchronisieren kann. Bislang ging das mit so vielen Geräten, wie man wollte, nun nur noch dann mit mehr als drei Geräten, wenn man zahlender Kunde wird, wobei der Spaß mindestens 10 Euro im Monat kosten soll, wenn man jährlich zahlt. Bei monatlicher Zahlweise sind schon 12 Euro fällig, allerdings bekommt man auch satte 2 TB. Dabei war ich fast 10 Jahre lang durchaus ein guter Kostenlos-Nutzer, denn man konnte seinen ursprünglichen Speicherplatz von 2 GB durch Empfehlungen erweitern, wodurch ich mir immerhin weitere 3,25 GB zusammenempfohlen habe. Man bekam 250 MB, dann, wenn jemand auf die eigene Empfehlung die Anwendung auf seinem Rechner installierte (Handy reichte nicht). 

Eines meiner wesentlichen Einsatzgebiete ist (bzw. war ...) die Datensammlung für meine kleine Band: Aufnahmen von Proben und Auftritten, Fotos lassen sich so komfortabel austauschen, aber vor allem die Songtexte. Ich kann mir ja nichts auswendig merken. Im Proberaum steht ein alter, träger iMac, der dort sein Gnadenbrot bekommt. Meistens arbeite ich privat an einem Macbook, im Büro an einer Windose und bei Auftritten mit einem iPad als Notenbuch, unterwegs auch mal, wenn auch selten, mit dem Handy. Das sind schon mal neuerdings zwei Geräte zu viel. Ein weiterer Einsatz ist die Speicherung meiner Arduino-Progrämmchen. Dafür muss neben dem Macbook manchmal noch ein Macbook Air herhalten. Noch ein Gerät zu viel. Man kann das zwar auch alles über ein Browserfenster erledigen, aber es ist ja gerade der Witz, dass sich der Clouddienst in das Dateisystem des jeweiligen Rechners integriert. Warum darauf verzichten?

Bei striktester Disziplin könnte ich mich vielleicht mit drei Geräten begnügen. Aber will ich das? Ich bezahle schon monatlich 10 Euro für Webspace. Zwar für “nur” 250 GB, aber die nutze ich zu vielleicht 15 bis 20%. Und es gibt ja Tools, die einen Dienste wie Dropbox mit eigenem Webspace realisieren. Da habe ich vor vielen Jahren Owncloud ausprobiert, und auch durchaus öfter mal genutzt. Aber jedes Mal, wenn die Software ein Update auf dem Server wollte, war das Geschrei groß, denn man muss viel von Hand machen. Da bin ich nicht so geschickt und geduldig, um es vorsichtig auszudrücken. 

Im Büro sind wir auf Office 365 umgestiegen. Da bekommt man pro Mitarbeiter 1 TB Cloud-Speicherplatz mit dem Dienst Onedrive bzw. Sharepoint. Die App ist ok. Nur, wenn man Links teilt, steht der Firmenname in der URL. Das mag ich bei privaten Daten nicht. 

Jetzt schaue ich mir mal Nextcloud an, ein Fork von Owncloud. Mal sehen. Es gibt anscheinend einen Knopf für das Updaten. Die iPad-App und die Desktop-Anwendung machen einen okayen Eindruck. Für Auftritte ist es vor allem wichtig, dass die App stabil läuft. Das wird sich zeigen. Eventuell nutze ich solange noch sicherheitshalber Dropbox parallel. Aber das Ende ist nah.

suddenly a buckit dropped on Cirnos head! "ow!" said Cirno a green hared person poked up out of the buckit "hi My names Kisoomay" said Kisoomey (it was Kisoomey you see) as she emurged from the buckit

"ow my head" replied cirno

oh Im sorry I didnt see you down there" said Kisoomay "no harm done. have you seen a skorpean around heer" asked Cirno Kisoomay shook her head becos she hadnt
