Flightless Bird | seventeen | Bradley Rooster Bradshaw
Synopsis: Josephine Wilson Miller is alone for the first time in her life. She got married after her first year of college and became a housewife, but that life is gone now. So she runs to San Diego, to her childhood best friend Jake, where she meets the man who could very well be her salvation.
series warnings: unplanned pregnancy, just pregnancy in general, talks of infertility. past mental and emotional abuse. anxiety. talks of women's reproductive systems (idk)
Jose and baby Florence, or Wren as they’d taken to calling her, came home a few days later. Wren seemed like an easy baby, sleeping through the nights and eating on a pretty regular schedule. Jose felt more than lucky. Jake’s mom flew in to help for the first few weeks, plus Penny was only ever a phone call away.
Jake, Bradley, and Natasha stayed as close as they could, leaving only to work. Bradley found himself sleeping in bed next to Jose most nights, just so he could help her take care of any night feedings that Wren needed. He also learned how to change diapers very quickly.
Secretly, Bradley liked being able to spend time with the little baby. He found it very soothing. Some nights when he couldn’t sleep, and Wren was just laying awake in her little bassinet, he would take her out into the living room. He’d prop her up on his knees and just talk to her for hours. Jose never knew that. Although Jake walked out during one of those late nights. On occasion, if Jake couldn’t sleep too, he’d join Bradley and they’d take turns with Wren.
She was good at calming down the two aviators. Her soft little coos seemed to put them at ease in some strange sort of way. Like holding her just made the rest of the world go quiet, and they could finally think again. Or be free not to think, and just sort of exist in her presence.
Jose was in love with her little daughter, she could stare at her forever. She loved the way that she would grab her finger and hold on as tightly as she could. Wren’s little hands would grab onto anything she could find, hair, fingers, clothes, anything.
The days turned into weeks, which turned into months. Suddenly Wren was six months old and babbling away at everything. Jose’s heart hurt thinking about how fast her little girl was growing up. She wished she could just freeze time.
Her life with Bradley seemed almost perfect, so much so that it didn’t seem real. He stayed most nights, cuddling in beside Jose, and often woke up to take care of Wren before Jose could even make any sort of move to get to her daughter.
Jake was always around, ready to help with absolutely anything that needed to be done. It was soothing to Jose to have both of the men in her life. Not to mention Phoenix, who was an absolute Godsend. The other woman was there to help her with any female related things, and Penny too. Jose’s little family felt so right, she didn’t want anything to change it.
But then she found the letter on Bradley’s kitchen table one day. He was up for a promotion, and a spot with the Blue Angels…something he’d only dreamt of. Jose swallowed a thick lump in her throat and put the letter back. It was sent more than a week ago and he hadn’t mentioned a thing about it.
Worry bubbled up in her. He wasn’t going to take the position, which meant he’d be giving up on his dream. She knew it was because of her…she was the reason he would give it up. There didn’t seem to be another valid reason behind it. He was happy here with her, sure, but would that last?
How long until he started to resent her and Wren because they kept him away from something he loved. He would be out of combat situations and be a spokesperson for the Navy and fighter pilots in every branch. He would be wonderful at it too. He was so good with kids, there’s no way the public wouldn’t love him.
But he hadn’t even mentioned it.
She debated talking to Jake and Phoenix about it, maybe even Penny and Mav since they were Bradley’s family. But instead she kept it to herself. She made her way back to her house across the street, Wren clutched tightly in her arms and tried to decide what she would do.
The letter stated that he needed to give an answer by the end of this week, and it was already Wednesday. They were out of time. Both of them. Jose’s chest ached. She wished she could call Penny for advice, but Bradley obviously hadn’t told a soul about this potential position.
Wren wiggled about, nuzzling deeper into her mother’s neck. It was time for her afternoon nap, and the little baby was no doubt ready for it.
With a sigh, Jose made her way towards the nursery and carefully laid her little girl in the crib. It was a gift from Mav and Penny, even though Jose tried not to accept it, they wouldn’t hear anything about it. They took to calling themselves Wren’s adopted grandma and grandpa; the verdict was still out on their official names though.
“Baby?” Bradley called, opening the front door.
“In the kitchen,” She called back, softly enough that he could hear but not loud enough to wake Wren.
He was on her in an instant, arms wrapped around her with his chin on her shoulder. She relaxed in his arms for a moment as she cleaned the bottles. There always seemed to be something in need of cleaning these days. Clothes needing to be washed, bottles needing to be cleaned…always something.
“How was your day?” He asked her softly, kissing her neck.
“It was…good,” Does she tell him she knows about his possible promotion and new position? Or does she just leave it alone?
“Yeah? What did you and our little Wrennie do today?”
Her heart clenched. Our little Wrennie. They started calling her that not long after she was born. Bradley might as well have been her father, with the way he was always here to take care of her and Jose. But how could Jose ask him to give up his dream for them? How could she ask for him to stay?
“We went and cleaned up your house a bit,” She shrugged. Here it comes, no going back, “I found your papers.”
“My papers?” Bradley tried to act dumb. He knew exactly what she was talking about of course. But maybe he could steer the conversation back away from them and forget all about them, like he’d been trying to do since he got them two weeks ago.
“Brad,” She turned in his arms, “Why didn’t you tell me?”
It was his turn to shrug now, “I didn’t think it was that big of a deal. I’ll still get promoted, but I just won’t take the posting.”
“Baby, it’s the Blue Angels, you’ve always dreamed of flying for them!”
“I always dreamed of having this,” He replied simply, “A family of my own.”
Jose swallowed the lump in her throat. He was going to turn it down and stay here. But now long until he started to hate them for making him stay? He would start to resent them, and she couldn’t imagine him resenting little Wren. It broke her heart. He would leave them one day, because he would realize that they just weren’t enough for him.
The day would come. She knew it would. All she wanted was for him to live out his dream, and if that meant forcing him to leave her, then so be it. She would make sure he found his way to Pensacola, Florida and to the Blue Angels.
“You aren’t her father,” She said so quietly, but she knew he heard her from the way his arms dropped.
“I know that,” He said gruffly.
“We aren’t a family,” She went on, each word slicing deeper and deeper into her heart, “You’re just playing house.”
“Don’t tell me that,” His tone changed, he was starting to get angry, “You know that this is a lot more than that.”
“Is it?” She questioned, “Because I don’t think it is.”
He stepped away from her, hurt flashing in his eyes. She knew she had to keep going. He wouldn’t leave with just a few angry words. She had to make sure he would take the posting and go, for his own good. She had to drive the knife in further, go past the point of no return for them. And Jose would do it all for Bradley.
She would hurt herself for him to make sure that he would be happy in the long run. She wanted nothing more than for him to be happy and healthy and living his dream. She could already imagine him in the Blue Angels uniform, doing interviews and being a perfect candidate for them. He was so good with people, and amazing with children. He could talk to the young flight students in Pensacola and tell them all of his old war stories, and what it was like flying with the absolute best fighter pilots in the nation. He would love every minute of it, she knew he would.
“I think you should go,” Jose told him, “Stop playing here with us. We don’t need you.”
“Why are you doing this?”
“Because Wren and I will be just fine without you!” She exclaimed, not believing a word she said, “You’ve just been here to keep me warm. I don’t need you, and Wren doesn’t need a fake father. So stop pretending.”
“Stop talking like this,” He begged, “This isn’t you.”
“It’s time to wake up, Rooster,” She never used his callsign, she always called him Bradley or Brad. She hated the way the simple name sounded coming from her lips, “It’s time to stop playing house. You need to take that post and leave us alone.”
“Is that really what you want?” His anger was back again, he was ready to fight for them. For his little family, he wouldn’t let her push him away.
“Yes! God, you’re so stupid,” Jose hated herself. He was one of the smartest people around. She knew he would fight as long as there was a chance, she knew she had to take away all hope for them, even if it destroyed her in the process, “I don’t love you. I was just using you. It was pregnancy hormones, I needed someone. You were right before.”
“Don’t you fucking do this Josephine.”
“I don’t love you. So take the damned position and forget about us, okay? Do yourself a favor for once in your fucking life.”
“If I walk out that door right now, it’s over,” He told her coldly, “I’m never coming back, do you understand me?”
The house was silent for a moment while he waited for her to respond. She felt like she was going to be sick. All she wanted to do was beg for his forgiveness and take it all back. She knew he would stay with just one word, but that was the problem. He needed to go, for his own sake.
“Leave then,” She replied, regretting the moment it left her lips, “I don’t care. I never did.”
He scoffed and turned on his heel, “Goodbye Josephine.”
She waited until the door closed, carefully and not slammed like she expected, before she followed. She watched out of the window as he stomped to his Bronco and drove away. He didn’t even go home. It was then that the tears started to fall. She couldn’t stop them even if she tried.
She slid down the door to the ground and sobbed. Her chest felt like it was going to split into two. She tried her best to be quiet, so she wouldn’t wake Wren. But the sobs were so loud they rang through the quiet house.
Then Wren started to cry from her little nursery. Jose tried to control her breathing but it was getting harder. She wiped at her tears, trying to dry off her face before she went into the nursery, but it seemed impossible.
“I’m coming baby,” She called through the house, and then she pushed herself off of the ground and vowed to stop crying. This was for the best. Bradley might even thank her one day.
She carefully picked up Wren, who was due for a feeding, “Just you and me now, baby girl. Just you and me.”

House Episode Master List
Here is my recommended house episodes my credentials are that I have watched house 3 times and the episodes that I remember are worth it and the ones I don't after 3 times must be bad. If you are really bored you can watch them all; you can play spot the celebrity. I was going to describe them all but that's pretty spoiler-y so I will not......
Season 1
S1.E1 - Pilot Classic. You can see how baby Wilson is in the beginning.
I actually don't remember season 1 too much. You can just watch the whole season to get a sense of the house cast. I don't care much for the Volger subplot; he's just House's villian.
If you want to speed run it: S1.E5 / S1.E8 / S1.E10
S1.E21 - Three Stories Fun episode
Season 2
S2.E1 - Acceptance Gotta watch the first episode of every season I guess
S2.E5 - Daddy's Boy I admit I don't remember this episode but some House backstory for you.
S2.E6 - Spin Making you watch an episode for a crumb of Hilson
S2. E7 - Hunting Gaydar
(I skipped a lot of episodes; House has a arc with his ex and I don't care. There may be some Hilson sprinkled in)
S2.E14 - Sex Kills Hilson at the end
S2.E15 - Clueless Hilson
S2.E16 - Safe Oh good more Hilson
S2.E17 - All In Fun episode where they play poker
S2.E18 - Sleeping Dogs Lie Ok this episodes kinda funny at the end
S2.E19 - House vs. God Cute Hilson moment also some Wilson lore
If you want to find out why I hate Foreman feel free to watch S2.E20 & S2.E21
S2.E22 - Forever Sure. This episode could be hilson if you squint.
Season 3
S3.E1 - Meaning First episode of the season babyyyy
S3.E2 - Cane and Able
S3.E4 - Lines in the Sand
S3.E5 - Fools for Love
S3.E6 - Que Sera Sera
S3.E7 - Son of Coma Guy Oh I like this episode. Good hilson and a fun case.

S3.E10 - Merry Little Christmas
S3.E11 - Words and Deeds
S3.E15 - Half-Wit
S3.E21 - Family
S3.E22 - Resignation ngl I don't remember this one but the wiki says hilson so on the list it goes
Season 4
S4.E1 - Alone
S4.E2 - The Right Stuff
S4.E3 - 97 Seconds House does a little game show type of game to hire a new team; if you like it keep watching if you find it boring go ahead and skip. Olivia Wilde is in them and she's hot so I find them fun.
S4.E4 - Guardian Angels
S4.E5 - Mirror Mirror Hilson; don't blink or you'll miss it.
S4.E8 - You Don't Want to Know I will make you watch this episode for the tiniest bit of Hilson
S4.E9 - Games Hey it's that guy
S4.E10 - It's a Wonderful Lie
S4.E11 - Frozen

S5.E5 - Lucky Thirteen I'm an Olivia Wilde apologist
S5.E7 - The Itch
S5.E9 - Last Resort
I hate Foreman!!!!!!!! BOO TO EPISODES 10-15ISH
S5.E17 - The Social Contract
S5.E18 - Here Kitty
S5.E19 - Locked In

S6.E16 - Black Hole Hilson
S6.E17 - Lockdown Thirteen gets along with the gays
S6.E18 - Knight Fall Thirteen is the best because House doesn't hit on her and simply goes to her for Wilson troubles.
S6.E20 - The Choice House and Wilson might be gay but this show is still h*m*ph*bic
S6.E21 - Baggage
Season 7
House and Cuddy date and it's awful and boring and makes no sense. You may watch the first few episodes if you wish but this show cannot write straight romance to save its life.
S7.E3 - Unwritten
S7.E5 - Unplanned Parenthood
S7.E12 - You Must Remember This
S7.E17 - Fall from Grace
S7.E18 - The Dig
S7.E21 - The Fix
Season 8
I do not care for season 8.
S8.E2 - Transplant Hilson
S8.E9 - Better Half The one hilson scene is so. much.
S8.E16 - Gut Check House and Wilson are in it.
S8.E17 - We Need the Eggs
S8E18 - Body & Soul
The rest of the episodes are Hilson so finish them up!

Amazon plane crash: Colombian children survived on cassava and fruits, family say.
According to the children's uncle, the extraordinary 40-day survival of four children in the Amazon jungle following the crash of their plane was made possible by the use of cassava flour and some familiarity with the fruits of the rainforest. Outside the Bogotá hospital, where the children are expected to remain for at least two weeks, the children's uncle, Fidencio Valencia, told reporters, "When the plane crashed, they took out a faria, and with that, they survived." In the Amazon basin, Faria is a type of cassava flour that people consume. Valencia stated, "They began to eat seeds after the faria ran out." An aunt of the children, Damaris Mucutuy, told a radio station that "the children are fine" despite having insect bites and being dehydrated. She added that the kids had been offered psychological well-being administrations. The children's ordeal came at a favorable time. Astrid Cáceres, top of the Colombian Establishment of Family Government assistance, said the adolescents were additionally ready to eat organic product on the grounds that "the wilderness was in reap". General Pedro Sanchez, who was responsible for the salvage exertion, said salvage groups had passed inside 20 to 50 meters (66 to 164ft) of where the kids were tracked down on several events yet had missed them. Sanchez stated, "The minors were already very weak." He continued, "And surely their strength was only sufficient to breathe, reach a small fruit, and drink a drop of water in the jungle."
The Huitoto children, aged 13, 9, and 4, as well as a baby 11 months old, were traveling with their mother from the Amazonian village of Araracuara to San Jose del Guaviare when the plane crashed in the early hours of May 1. On Friday, a military sniffer dog discovered the children alive after spending weeks in a place where there are a lot of snakes, mosquitoes, and other animals. The children informed authorities that they had some time with a dog but that it later vanished. As of Saturday, the military is still looking for the dog, a Belgian Shepherd named Wilson. On Saturday, President Gustavo Petro met the children at the Bogotá hospital after jokingly announcing their discovery on Friday. Iván Velásquez, the defense minister, told reporters that the children were being rehydrated and could not yet eat. "In any case, as a general rule, the state of the youngsters is satisfactory," Velásquez said. Officials praised the bravery of the eldest child, a girl, who, according to them, knew how to survive in the rainforest and led the others through the ordeal. The four kids were in a Cessna single-motor propeller plane that was likewise conveying three grown-ups and when the pilot pronounced a crisis because of a motor disappointment. The little airplane tumbled off the radar a brief time frame later and a weeks-in length look for survivors started. Friday's air force video showed a helicopter that couldn't land in the dense rainforest, so it had to use lines to lift the kids up. On Friday, images of volunteers and a group of soldiers posing with the children, who were covered in thermal blankets, were posted on Twitter by the military. The smallest child was being fed from a bottle by one of the soldiers. Petro predicted that the children's story "will remain in history" and described them as an "example of survival." On May 16, two weeks after the crash, a search team located the plane in a dense rainforest and located the bodies of the three adults who were aboard; however, the small children were not found. Colombia's military stepped up their search because they thought they might still be alive. They flew 150 soldiers and dogs into the area, where it was hard to see because of thick foliage and mist. The search was also joined by dozens of volunteers from Indigenous tribes. In the hope that the boxes of food that soldiers dropped into the jungle in helicopters would aid in the children's survival, Flares were fired by planes passing over the area to assist ground-based search teams at night, and speakers were used by rescuers to blast a recorded message from the grandmother of the siblings advising them to remain in one location. Soon after Petro and National Liberation Army rebel group representatives signed a ceasefire, their rescue was announced. He emphasized the collaborative efforts of the military and Indigenous communities to locate the children, in keeping with the messaging from his government that emphasized his efforts to end internal conflicts. "The meeting of the minds: military and indigenous peoples," he tweeted. Colombia could go in a different direction: This, in my opinion, is the only way to peace. Read the full article

Mothers naming daughters after themselves makes more sense than men naming kids after themselves. After all it’s the mother that goes through pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding.
Choosing a baby name is one of the first major decisions you make as a parent, and it can be a stressful one. Should you pick a trendy, unique name? Honor a family member? Go gender neutral, or traditional? The questions can be dizzying, and the choices feel rife with meaning. Names, after all, are our introduction to the world and tend to make a statement. Some women are making that statement by turning an old patriarchal tradition on its head: They’re naming their daughters after themselves.
For certain mothers, sharing a name with a child is an intrinsically feminist act simply because it’s unexpected in our society. Susannah Wilson, who manages arts organizations in New Haven, Connecticut, recently welcomed a daughter and named her Susannah. When she began to spell her newborn’s name for the hospital record-keeper, the person interrupted, insisting that Wilson was giving her own name, not her baby’s. “My brother’s a Junior … and his whole life, no one bats an eye when he and my dad give their names,” Wilson told me. “This lady couldn’t comprehend that I would name my daughter after me.” And that, she said, felt good. It’s a clear double standard that Wilson’s happy to confront.
In the United States, the passing down of the surname—traditionally from the father’s side in heterosexual partnerships—is the naming convention that stirs the most discussion. (Though one might assume that hyphenated surnames that include both parents’ names are a growing progressive trend, straight American women today almost always opt for children taking their father’s last name.) But first names may carry even more weight with regard to our identity. “I think there’s something about that claiming of self that women haven’t been encouraged to do,” Wilson said. “That’s what I will do with my little girl … encourage her to own herself and assert herself.” Even if that means her daughter chooses a different name at some point in her life: “It’s a working title.”
Read: The age of the unique baby name
Historically, names have been patrilineal because they were often a way of proving property ownership, inheritance, and reputation. So, if a man had a business called “John Smith’s Grocery,” his son, John Smith Jr., would be the obvious heir. It isn’t that mothers’ names have never been passed along, though, says Laura Wattenberg, the author of The Baby Name Wizard and the founder of Namerology.com, a community site for name enthusiasts. One common tradition for passing along a mother’s name involves using her maiden name as a first name for a son, but even that isn’t really about the woman. “That, to me, is not about honoring the mother at all, but honoring the mother’s father, and showing off your connections,” Wattenberg told me. “Especially if the mother came from a prominent family.”
Although experts told me that the number of male Juniors is declining, many of us personally know boys or men named after their father. Female Juniors are harder to come by. According to Wattenberg, you can tell how rare it is for women to name their children after themselves, because whenever people try to find examples, they point to celebrities: Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, Nancy Sinatra, or Big Edie and Little Edie, the cast-off Kennedy relatives whose oddball lifestyle was documented in the cult classic Grey Gardens.
What’s more, in the fictional pop-culture world, when girls are named after their mother, the act tends to be used to portray eccentricity. Lorelai Gilmore of Gilmore Girls, for example, is a larger-than-life character who had her daughter, Lorelai Gilmore (a.k.a. Rory), at 16. Rory explains in the pilot episode that her mother “was lying in the hospital thinking about how men name boys after themselves all the time, you know, so why couldn’t women? She says her feminism just kind of took over. Though personally I think a lot of Demerol also went into that decision.” The implication is that naming a daughter after her mother is a decision one would have to make under the influence of either heavy pharmaceuticals or feminist rage. Pamela Redmond, one of the creators of the baby-name site Nameberry, told me that she has spoken with mothers who have thought about naming babies after themselves but who felt “uneasy” or “apologetic” about it.
Read: A patriarchal tradition that just won’t budge
An added layer to this hesitance may be the fact that naming boys Junior is sometimes associated with a tradition of masculinity and even narcissism. But for Nancy Swider-Peltz Sr., a former competitive speed skater and coach in Wheaton, Illinois, naming her daughter after herself was an enthusiastic decision that brought her joy. Still, she says she runs into judgment when people learn of Nancy Swider-Peltz Jr. “People feel odd about it,” she told me over Zoom. “They think it’s egotistical. And it’s like, well, what do you think the men [who do it] feel?” For her part, Nancy Jr. has loved the uniqueness of her name, and the connection it draws to her mom, especially as she built her own career as an Olympic speed skater. “I was proud to carry on the name,” she told me. “I think what my mom did well when we were younger was never pressure us into something just because she did it. I didn’t like skating until I was 13.” By the time she did begin to skate competitively, being known as her mother’s daughter on the ice wasn’t a negative thing, she said. “I wanted to follow in her footsteps.”
Such a close association with parents can feel special, but it can also cause pain. Betsy Cornwell Lyons, an American novelist who lives in western Ireland, was named Katherine Elizabeth, the 13th in a long line of Katherines in her family, including her own mother. Even though she and her mother went by different aliases (her mother, Kitty, for Katherine; herself, Betsy, for Elizabeth), as a child she wasn’t pleased about the name. “I disliked having the same name as my mother, because it felt like a way to erode the boundaries between us,” she told me over email. “She seemed to enjoy people confusing our records at the dentist’s office and that kind of thing; it always made me squirm.” Though Cornwell Lyons is estranged from her mother today, since she’s become a parent herself, she says she does appreciate her name’s connection to her further-back ancestors. “I think I like feeling connected to those 11 other Katherines who came before my mother, even though I know very little about them.” And because she has separated her life from her mother’s, she doesn’t resent the connection as much, similar to how she feels about retaining her ex-husband’s last name after divorce. “I think names can hold value and heritage and meaning even when the person who gave you the name is gone from your life, for whatever reason. ”
Naming a daughter after a mother isn’t a modern phenomenon; in some cultures, the tradition of matrilineal naming goes back centuries. In Ireland, and several other European countries, it was commonplace to name the first daughter after the maternal grandmother, the second daughter after the paternal grandmother, and the third daughter after the mother. Hence why looking through an Irish family tree can often feel like swimming through a sea of Marys, Kathleens, or, as in my own family, Margarets.
The practice is also prevalent in several Spanish-speaking countries, where it’s common to carry on both parents’ last names as well. Destry Maria Sibley, a media producer, is named after her mother, who was born in Mexico. Sibley was born and raised in Maine in the 1980s, however, and she says having the same first name as her mother was not normal. “The fact that my mom continued that custom while we were living in a place where that would seem very strange … I just think that’s very cool.” Though Sibley did not pass her own first name along to her daughter, she did opt for another matrilineal name, her maternal grandmother’s. Still, she hopes that more American mothers “will at least question why it is basically taken for granted that it’s a thing men will do but not women.”
It’s nearly impossible to say whether female Juniors are becoming more common, because most naming data we have access to don’t follow familial generations, and most girls, even if named after their mother, don’t have an official “Jr.” suffix that would be trackable. But an increase in the practice wouldn’t be surprising to Brian Powell, a sociology professor at Indiana University who studies family and gender. “For the past couple of decades we have really been reevaluating names, and using names we had never used before, and creating names we never used before,” he told me. So, more girls sharing names with their mother “could be a logical consequence of a general move toward more freedom and flexibility in what kind of names people can have.”
Nameberry’s Redmond told me that roughly two generations ago it was almost radical for families not to name sons after their father. Since then, the concept of individuality has become more important for American parents to bestow on their kids. Ironically, the idea of mothers naming children after themselves today could prove just the opposite, a radical move granting a daughter a unique story to tell and a name most of her classmates probably don’t have—at least until the trend becomes more popular.

You weren't drunk enough to blame alcohol for letting Sam invade your mouth with his expert tongue. The music outside of the random room you found maintained you with your feet on reality somehow, to not think it was a dream. A good dream. Even if you were focused on the way he was making you feel and the heat he was causing between your legs to burn down your soul, Bucky's fingers rolling the dress' straps by your arms until it fell to the floor kept your attention on him too. From one second to another, you were naked among the only two men you desired in your life —your boyfriend and his new best friend.
You couldn't help but moan pleased when they pressed you against their bodies and Bucky's huge hands made their way to your hard nipples. He squeezed your breasts slowly, delighting himself with every touch and the sound of every gasp dying on Sam's tongue, still dominating yours masterfully. You ran out of breath at the feeling of their rock dicks being rubbed to your ass and pussy respectively. You were in heaven between those two men.
“Tell him what you want, doll”. Your boyfriend murmured hoarsely into your ear, touring the shape of it with his teeth, causing you goosebumps all around.
“Ca— Can you…? Fuck…” You whined through your parted lips when Bucky dug his incisors in your shoulder. “Sam… I… I wan— want yo— shit… I've fantasized of you… fuckin— fucking me with your fingers”.
“That's what you want, uh?” He inquired rhetorically, pawing your sides roughly as one of his hands toured your right thigh straight to your cunt barely covered by a thin thong. Soaked.
“Please…” You begged, placing your arms around his neck.
Sam licked his lips, not needing to look at Bucky for permission. What you didn't know is that ten minutes ago they had a conversation on the terrace to make that happen. No one could deny that you'd die for Bucky's love. He was everything you had, and you were everything he had. But, when both of them appeared in your house really fucked after a mission, you started to feel some kind of desire for Sam. Only desire. Your heart was occupied with your boyfriend.
You came back from your thoughts as soon as the second man recently involved moved the small string aside. He played and teased your folds using the fingertip of his index digit, making you toss your head back to Bucky's left shoulder. Your boyfriend drunk delighted the crying you uttered inevitably when Sam slammed his finger into your tight walls, clenching around him. While the soldier was being all sweetness and delicacy, kissing you slowly, the pilot started to fuck you hard adding a second curled finger. And God blessed the loud music outside to cover your wrecked moans and your pleads.
“Does Sam make you feel good, doll?” Bucky purred with his eyes fixed on yours, watching you gasp in sync with the palm crashing violently against your pussy.
The three of you knew you hadn't much time to be disappeared before someone suspected, and the fierce pace of thrusts to your g-spot had you shivering under Bucky's grip.
“Oh, fuck, Sam”. You sobbed, not being able to form a proper sentence.
As your boyfriend guided his lips to your neck —sucking a hickey there to mark his forever-territory—, the pilot was back to attack your mouth. Your fingers were tightly nailed to the back of his head, starting to rock your hips looking for more friction against their sensible cocks. The grunts coming from them filled the room.
“Shit… you're gonna make me cum in my pants”. Sam growled, landing his free hand in your ass, squeezing it and forcing you to move it faster against Bucky's dick, being a bundle of moans dying on your neck.
“Got'a better idea…”
As you heard your boyfriend chuckling petty onto your ear with his orbs fixed on the dark ones of his friend, you knew they were going to ruin you.
“Listen to me now, doll. 'M gonna leav—”.
“Plea— Please, Bucky, don't”. You whined, not knowing how much you could handle the way Sam was impaling you by adding a third finger, making you cover your mouth with a hand or the whole compound would hear you.
“I can wait for you”. He hummed, turning your face towards his. “But I wan'you to show him how good you make me feel… And I'll give you a reward later”.
You were conscious that it didn't matter the times you begged him to stay, they had made a decision before coming into that room and that was what was going to happen. Bucky placed one last kiss full of love and tender at the moment Sam gave a break to your abused cunt, and you watched him leave after checking there wasn't anybody around, placing well his jeans in the zone of his bulge crotch.
“We can't stop if you don' want to continue”. Sam mumbled then, holding your hand to bring you closer.
You were panting trying to recover your breathing, pouting at him inevitably. As soon as Bucky left you alone, you felt a slap of reality and insecurities straight to your face. And he noticed it, gently wrapping your lower back with his arms since your legs were shaking and too weak to stand by themselves.
“Look at me”. He asked you then, showing you a fleeting smile barely curving up his lips. “Bucky wants it and I do too. But it only matters if you want or not. This… This is like a test, alright? You try and if you like, and if you want, we'll repeat. Bucky, you and I”.
You nodded hardly swallowing, sure that you'd make it up to your boyfriend later. You weren't in love with Sam, only with Bucky and you needed to demonstrate it to him. You glanced at the pilot unzipping his pants to pull them down along his boxers, letting his painful erection spring free to his abdomen still covered by the white shirt he was wearing. Your right hand gripped his sensitive skin, licking your lips at the sight, pumping his glorious dick slowly, as Sam made you walk backward to the immaculately done bed. He sat first, not being in need of telling you what you had to do next.
He watched you pull down by your thighs your black thong till it was thrown on the floor, before heading to his lap and sitting on it. Sam's cock was thick and long, pretty similar to Bucky's, so you knew it will cost you a second to fit your clenching and abused cunt around him, but you were too anxious for being fucked by him that you didn't care. You practically bounced on Sam, ramming his hardness into you beyond your limits. He was fast enough to make you drown the loud cry out in his mouth, crashing his lips on yours.
He filled you completely, gripping his hands in your hips slightly painful to urge you to move, to dance your body. And you did it with nothing but whines and gasps.
“You're so… tight, baby girl”. Sam grunted rolling his eyes white. “Oh, fuck…”
You still couldn't believe what was happening between those four walls. You were impaling your cunt once and once, with any mercy, using your boyfriend's best friend's dick. And you liked it. You loved it. Sam was making you feel really good. Not the same way Bucky used to do, but enough to put you to beg him for letting you cum. You needed it, and you wanted him to flood your guts too.
“Ple— Please… Please”. You cried hiding your face into the crook of his neck, feeling the tears of pure desperation run down your cheeks.
“C'mon, my sweet girl… cream my dick…” He whispered with such a honeyed tone, almost hurting you by the way he had to nail tighter his fingertips in your buttocks. Painfully pleasurable.
You couldn't contain the orgasm anymore at his petition, looking for his mouth to invade yours again by using his tongue to drown the delighted scream he caused on you, while the ecstasy hit your body wildly. But Sam didn't stop from forcing you to keep jumping onto his twitching cock, pushing you down strongly and feeling him almost touching your stomach when his seed was spilled inside your clenching and glad abused pussy.
“For the fuc— fucking love of… God”. He roared in a broken tone of voice.
Your thighs were quivering at both sides of his legs, your lungs were emptied and your mind went completely blank.
Once you made sure to look like anything happened, you left the room before Sam —ashamed but satisfied—. Trying to walk normally, as your legs were still feeling weak, you looked for your boyfriend where he told you where he was going to be waiting for you. In the desolate kitchen. You glanced at Bucky sipping a glass of whisky, suddenly fading away your embarrassment and your insecurities with a smirk towards you, stretching his cold hand to hold yours and push you to his warm body.
“Did Sam fuck you good, uh?” He wanted to know humming, gently caressing your swollen and somewhat darker lips with his iron thumb. You nodded in silence, stealing the glass from his other hand to drink it in just one gulp.
“Can yo… Can you take me home?” You murmured in a plea, almost pouting at him.
“Hey, hey… Listen”. His tone changed in the blink of an eye from seduction to concern, placing his index finger under your chin. “You don' have to demonstrate me anythin'… God… I've never in my life felt so damn turned on than tonight… Watching you being fucked by Sam while you were looking at me…”
“You… You didn't leave bec—”.
Bucky interrupted you by freeing your hand from the glass, wrapping his left around your throat, and nailing the other in the center of your ass, directing his middle finger to that tight unexplored hole under your dress.
“I wan'to repeat, doll”. He purred in your ear, causing you to gasp against his by the pressure in your entrance. “I wan' Sam and I to fuck you at once… I wan' you to suck my dick —your dick— as he eats your sweet, little pussy… Fuck… Fuck, I'm hard only by imagining it, doll”.
“Buck…” You sobbed tightening your fingers in his shoulders. “Take me home… I beg you… Please”.

Flightless Bird | eighteen | Bradley Rooster Bradshaw
Synopsis: Josephine Wilson Miller is alone for the first time in her life. She got married after her first year of college and became a housewife, but that life is gone now. So she runs to San Diego, to her childhood best friend Jake, where she meets the man who could very well be her salvation.
series warnings: unplanned pregnancy, just pregnancy in general, talks of infertility. past mental and emotional abuse. anxiety. talks of women's reproductive systems (idk)
“Mommy! Hurry up!” Wren said, dragging Jose behind her, “Auntie Nat twell her!”
Natasha only laughed and walked next to Jose. They were on their way from the parking lot to the tarmac for the airshow. Jake was set to be flying and Wren was begging to go see it. Although, Jose tried to normally stay away from Airshows in general just in case someone certain was there.
“So, I have some news,” Nat whispered to Jose.
“Oh?”
Natasha just smiled and twisted her wedding ring, something Jose noticed the female pilot did when she was a little anxious. Her and Jake got married two years prior in a small ceremony on the beach. Not to big and fussy, as both of them wanted simple friends and family. A certain Blue Angels pilot was not able to attend, so Coyote was Jake’s best man while Jose was the maid of honor, with little baby Wren as a little flower girl. It was beautiful and simple and perfect.
“You can’t tell anyone yet,” Phoenix stated, “But I’m pregnant.”
Jose stopped in her tracks, much to Wren’s dismay who let out a little wail and tried with all of her might to pull her mom forward.
“Oh my god, Nat!”
“Are you mad? I know you-”
“Mad? Oh my god no, I’m so happy for you!” Jose exclaimed, hugging the other woman, “Does Jake know yet?”
Natasha shook her head, “No I haven’t found the time to tell him yet.”
“How far along?”
“Six weeks? I think? I have a doctors appointment next week to confirm,” She explained, “But I’m so scared to tell Jake. We’ve talked about kids, but not yet.”
“Well, I’m assuming you weren’t using anything?” Jose asked carefully.
“We weren’t trying,” Nat swore, “But we weren’t not trying.”
Jose couldn’t help but laugh. That sounded like the most Jake and Natasha thing.
“I want Gampa Mav and Nenny,” Wren whined, snapping the two women out of their hug.
“Okay, let’s go munchkin.”
Wren was dressed in little combat boots, one of the flight jackets that Jose bought for her before she was born, and a pink tutu. She looked like a little combat princess as she strutted in front of Jose and Nat.
For a nearly four year old, she had a lot of personality. Maybe too much for her own good. But Jose loved her daughter with all of her heart. There wasn’t a thing in this world that she wouldn’t do for her.
“Thank you for coming today,” Nat nudged Jose with her shoulder, “I know it means a lot to Jake to have you guys here for this.”
Jake was set to be a part of a super important Legacy flight, one of the only f-18 pilots chosen. He couldn’t stop talking about it for weeks prior. Jose wasn’t sure if she’d ever seen him so excited for something related to work before.
“We couldn’t miss it,” Jose shrugged, “Wren wouldn’t let me.”
“Mama we see Unca Yake?” Wren asked.
Jose couldn’t help but smile at the way that Wren said Uncle Jake. They were still working on her speech, but the little munchkin was getting better and better every day.
“Yeah sweetheart, we’ll see him soon, I promise,” Jose replied, “But let’s find Gampa Mav and Nenny first, okay?”
She nodded enthusiastically and wiggled a little in Jose’s arms. Little Florence loved Maverick and Penny, now lovingly known and Gampa Mav and Nenny. They stepped right into the role of grandparents to Wren without a second thought. They were there to support Wren and Jose with no questions asked, even after Jose forced Braldey to leave.
They never once asked what happened between the two of them. Instead they just loved Jose and her little daughter with all of their hearts.
“Gampa Mav!” Wren wiggled out of Jose’s arms and took off running towards the older pilot, “Nenny! Auntie ‘Melia!”
“Shit,” Jose cursed, chasing after her little girl.
Wren jumped into Mav’s arms, hugging the older man as tightly as she could. Mav laughed and hugged her back, not seeming to notice the fact that the little girl ran off without her mother. Penny was a little more attentive and scowled at the little girl as best as she could.
“Wren, what have I told you?” Jose was out of breath as soon as she reached them, “You need to stay with me!”
“But I saw Gampa Mav and Nenny.” The little girl blinked up at her mother, not seeming to understand.
“You can’t run off-”
“Mav! There you are!”
Jose froze. She didn’t dare turn to look at the source of the voice. A noise escaped her, sounding like a small wounded animal. She didn’t even check to see if they were going to be here today. Normally she checked every air show, but Jake was so excited that she was going to come and bring Wren.
“Bradley,” Mav said, handing Wren over to Phoenix who finally caught up, “Didn’t expect to see you until later.”
“I had a second and saw you guys over here.”
Wren looked at Bradley with wide eyes. He was in his blue and gold flight suit, looking like a hero in his own way. Wren was mesmerized by any pilots. She loved planes, and the people that flew them.
“You fwy pwanes?”
Bradley was stunned for a second. He finally realized who was standing next to Mav and Penny. She looked so different, and yet exactly the same. Her hair was longer, and she was thinner than he’d ever seen her. So much so it made him wonder if she was eating enough. But he didn’t have the right to worry about Josephine Wilson anymore, not when she kicked him out of her life.
“I uh-” He cleared his throat and directed his attention to the little girl in Phoenix’s arms.
Somehow it hadn’t occurred to him that this was the little baby he once loved with all of his heart. She was so much bigger, with wide eyes that mirrored her mother’s. She looked just like Jose. There’s no way that wasn’t her daughter. It made him want to cry. He loved her like a daughter and he missed out on so much of her life.
“Yeah, I do,” Bradley smiled at the little girl, forcing down the emotions. He leaned down so he was eye level with her, “See that blue and yellow plane over there?” he pointed down the way a little to where all of the Blue Angels were lined up, “That one is mine.”
“Woah,” She replied, “Auntie Nat can we go see?”
Nat carefully looked over at Jose, who still hadn’t allowed herself to look over at Bradley. Jose nodded quickly, watching as Nat along with Mav, Penny, and Amelia made their way towards the row of planes.
Jose swallowed the thick lump in her throat. She felt like she could cry. She always did her best to avoid Bradley at any event that the Blue Angels could be at. Jake always understood. He hated it, but he understood. She wanted to be mad at him for not warning her that he would be here today. She felt tricked and like her heart was going to explode.
“Jose.”
She closed her eyes and licked her dry lips before opening her eyes and turning to face him, “Hi Bradley.”
“It’s good to see you,” He said slowly, carefully even.
“Yeah, um, you too,” She replied, “You look good.”
“I am. Pensacola has been good for me,” He replied, voice sounding like gravel.
She nodded. She wasn’t sure what she expected him to say. What do you even say in a situation like this? How is she supposed to do this? How was she supposed to face Bradley, when all she wanted to do was be held by him again? She wanted to feel his lips on hers again. She wanted him more than she could dare to put into words.
“You look…nice,” Bradley had to force the words out. He wanted nothing more than to hold her.
“Try keeping up with a three year old, see how you look,” She responded quickly.
“No, I didn’t mean it like that. I genuinely meant you look nice.”
She looked down at her little sundress and sighed. She hated this feeling between them. This rift, the distance…whatever it was. She wanted to feel close to him again. But she didn’t know how she could ever feel close like she used to.
“She’s gotten so big,” Bradley was looking over his shoulder now, looking towards Wren, “She was so tiny when I left.”
“Bradley about what I-”
“Bradshaw! Time to get ready.”
His eyes closed as he took a deep breath. His shoulders squared before his eyes opened again and he was back to being Rooster. He forced a smile and held out his hand for Jose to shake. How do you even shake hands with the man you’re still madly in love with?
“Nice to see you again, Josephine. Look for me in the skies.”
She wanted to say more. Wanted to beg for his forgiveness. Wanted to beg for him…just for him to give her a second chance. But he was gone before she had the chance. He disappeared into the crowd of people like a leaf disappears in the wind.
Jose was still holding her breath when Natasha came back to stand next to her, “Mav has Wren. Are you okay?”
Jose’s eyes started to water, “I didn’t realize how much I missed him. And then he’s right here and I can’t say any of the things that I want.”
“You’ll get your chance,” Natasha assured her, “Now c’mon, Jake is up next. Don’t want to miss him.”
Later that night, Jose was sitting in her bed alone. Wren was staying with Jake and Natasha tonight, so the house was silent. Jose didn’t quite know what to do with herself. So she poured a big glass of wine and settled in. What she didn’t expect was her phone pinging at eleven, with a text from a number she never expected to see again.
She found herself scurrying out of the bed and fumbling her way to the front door. Her breath was ragged as she threw the door open to reveal Bradley standing there. He looked too good to be true.
“Hey,” She said stupidly.
Bradley was on her in an instant, hands cradling her face, “Tell me you don’t want this.”
“I-” She took a second, “I want you. I always have.”
Then he was kissing her like she was the only thing that mattered in the whole world.

things couples do : b.b
bucky comes to visit you after a mission to help you decorate your apartment for christmas, only to discover the job has already been completed. (1.6k)
masterlist / permanent taglist

“Do you think the compound will be done when we get back?” Sam questions, looking over to Tony who simply rolls his eyes as he checks his watch.
“It’s the second of December, Wilson.” Tony states. “If Pepper hasn’t sorted the decorations out then somethings clearly wrong.”
Chuckling under his breath, Steve averts his attention to Bucky who remains lost in his own thoughts. “Are you helping Y/n decorate?” Steve asks quietly, watching as Bucky lifts his head up, snapping himself from the cries of those who were lost during the mission.
Quickly, his thoughts are replaced by the faint sound of your laughter, of him holding you close in his arms as you watch a movie (despite Bucky asking twenty questions a minute) and making him feel safe.
“I’m not sure,” Bucky responds. “I, I think so?” Uncertainty laces Bucky’s tone as Steve simply nods.
It was going to be your first Christmas together, and the rules seemed a little less than clear for an Avenger who was over one hundred years old and one of Pepper’s assistants who lived in her own apartment- a civilian if you will.
“Oh, you have to, Barnes.” Sam pipes up, eavesdropping on the pair's conversation and ignores the blatant glare from Bucky. “It’s a thing all couples do, brings you closer together and get in the holiday spirit.”
“He’s right, as much as I hate to admit it.” Tony adds as he rises to his feet, heading towards the pilot to check how much longer he’d be trapped with the trio.
“You do practically live there already,” Steve shrugs a shoulder, making a fair point. “so I guess you could always help her decorate.”
Bucky nods along, still unsure. “I don’t even know if she’s got a tree or anything.” Bucky sighs to himself, wondering what he’s about to get himself into.
“It’ll be fun, you can listen to Christmas songs, dance around her apartment, kiss under the mistletoe if you’re able to replicate human emotions, cyborg.” Sam jokes, this time catching Steve giving him a knowing look. “I’m just saying, it’s something most couples do together, you’re at hers more than the compound.”
The thought lingers on Bucky’s mind as they begin to descend back toward the compound. He knows he’s home earlier than anticipated, having told you he would be gone for at least two weeks, yet here he is, a week early.
Once debriefed, Bucky gathers his things and heads straight for the lift, knowing nothing is stopping him now from being with you.
“Buck,” Steve calls out as Bucky taps his foot as he watches the elevator rise from the ground floor.
Trying not to get caught in the streams of tinsel dangling from the ceiling, Steve approaches his friend as they both wait for the metal doors to open.
“It’s fine, Steve, I’m fine.” Bucky reasons. “I’m going to see my best girl.”
The comment doesn’t go amiss by the captain as a smile forms on his face, having wondered if his oldest friend would ever find happiness again.
“Let me know how it goes, and send her my love.” Steve pats Bucky’s shoulder as he turns around, heading back to his room as the metal doors open, allowing Bucky to have a moment alone as he gathers his thoughts in earnest to see you.
*
Standing outside of your apartment, Bucky fiddles with the keys in his grip as he turns the door handle, hearing the reassuring sound of the locks sliding out of place.
As he opens the front door, Bucky gently places his bags down and locks the door behind himself.
Usually, you would stir or pause whatever you might be doing at the sound of the door closing, yet you’re nowhere to be found.
“Y/n?” Bucky calls out your name as he places his keys in the hallway as he steps forward, the faint sound of music playing in your living room.
Turning the corner, Bucky pauses as he leans against the doorway of your living room; covered in Christmas decorations including a large tree glowing with lights and baubles.
It’s a sight that Bucky didn’t anticipate walking in to, and as he steps in he admires your handiwork.
Behind him, Bucky can hear the sound of you stirring and quickly turns on his heels. “Baby?” Trying to hold back his laugh, Bucky kneels down in front of the armchair you’re in, well, stuck in for better words.
Your lap is coated in tinsel and a Santa hat you had been wearing now rests above your head instead. Yet, despite it, Bucky can’t help but love you even more.
Reaching out, Bucky removes the tinsel from your lap and you begin to wake up.
“Bucky?” You tiredly mumble as your eyes start to open as the sight of your boyfriend greets you.
“Hey, doll.” Bucky smiles as you begin to sit upright as a yawn escapes your lips.
“What day is it? I swear I just closed my eyes.” Confusion spreads across your expression as Bucky reaches for your hands, taking them in his.
“I’m home early, the mission was completed in less time than we had all anticipated.” Bucky explains, but as you focus on the small smile lining his lips you can see that pain lingering in his eyes.
Lifting your hand up, you rest it against his cheek, cradling into it as a sigh leaves his lips. “Do you wanna talk about it?” You mutter, even if it’s just the two of you.
Bucky shakes his head in response as he shuffles closer, resting his head on your lap as you run your fingers through his hair, listening as he hums contently. “There wasn’t a need for casualties, but these people, god, they were just in the wrong place.” Bucky explains quietly, seeing the looks of terror crossing their expressions whenever he blinks.
"I’m so sorry, Bucky.” You comment, pausing as you rest your stretch your arm out, resting your hand on his shoulder where flesh meets metal.
He can feel a small movement, the circles rubbing from his scar to the connection of his metal arm. “I just wish I had been faster, that someone saw them sooner.” Bucky mutters coldly, trying his best to remove himself from the situation and focus on the soft lighting and warmth you radiate.
“It’s not your fault, James.” You remind him as he shuffles in your embrace, looking up at you. “What?” You ask as he quirks an eyebrow to you.
“You called me James.” He states. “You never call me James.”
Bucky watches as your lips part, but words fail to follow momentarily. "I just, sometimes it slips out." You admit shyly. "And I think you needed a distraction too," You bite your lower lip, wondering if you crossed a line as Bucky simply looks up at you with a blank expression.
The moment is short lived as Bucky smiles up at you, that loving glint crossing his gaze. "I appreciate that, doll. I really do." Bucky chuckles as he rises to his feet, resting his hands on his hips as he looks around your living room. "See you've been busy whilst I was gone, huh?"
"Well, I needed a distraction myself." You admit, standing up behind him as you wrap your arms around his waist. "Do you like it?"
Out of the corner of his eye, Bucky can see the empty boxes piled up that you would've gotten out on your own without a helping hand. He can see the precision of every ornament on your shelves and mantlepiece, wondering what stories hide behind each decoration he'll learn another day.
"Yeah, it's nice." Bucky mutters, but as your arms slide away from his waist, he mentally swears knowing that it wasn't quite the answer you're looking for.
"Nice?" You mimic his response as you stand beside him.
"I just, I thought it was something we could've done together, like a normal couple." Bucky reasons as he looks away from you. "That's stupid, forget I said it." He quickly adds, but you tugging his arm captures his attention.
A light laugh escapes your lips as you look up at him. "Bucky, I had no idea you would've liked to decorate with me." You cover your mouth with your other hand. "I'm sorry, baby. I just wanted it done so when you came back it was festive and we could just spend quality time together."
"I can't be mad at that suggestion." A smirk crosses Bucky's lips as he brings you into his embrace, trying to ignore you rolling your eyes as you look up at him.
"Oh, I forgot!" You exclaim, pulling away from his arms as you rush over to the pile of boxes. "It's in here somewhere," You mumble under your breath before revealing a golden star. "I, I couldn't reach the top of the tree, wanna help me put it on?" You hold the star in your fingertips.
"I'd love to, doll." Bucky walks over to your tree, meeting you there as he takes a hold of your waist, holstering you up with ease as you place the star on the top of the tree, the last of the decorations.
Lowering you down, you lean against Bucky as you appreciate your handiwork. "Would you look at that, beautiful isn't it?" You sigh happily as you admire your tree whilst Bucky admires you.
"Truly is, Y/n." Bucky mutters, turning you around as he leans down to kiss you softly.
"Merry Christmas, baby." Muttering into his lips, you smile as you pull away afterwards, swaying in your living room as Christmas songs play faintly in the background; just as Bucky envisioned.

Series Masterlist
“Ugh, I can’t believe my big boy’s graduated,” Meredith cries, taking her eldest son in her arms.
“Mom…” Wes groans, though he makes no attempt to push his mother away. He spares a look over to his girlfriend over his mom’s shoulder.
Cami just shrugs before her attention is pulled away by a bouquet of flowers. She gasps dramatically, accepting the gesture from an apprehensive Andy. She leans down and presses a kiss to the nine-year-old’s cheek, smiling softly when she sees it’s flushed red from embarrassment.
The whole interaction makes Wes smile. He was going to marry that girl.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” Meredith says, reluctantly releasing her grip and breaking him out of his love-induced daydream. “I just want to get enough hugs in before you head off to the Academy.”
Wilson steps over with his daughter in front of him. He figures he should butt in before his wife goes on a downward spiral about one of their babies leaving the nest.
“Honey, he just graduated. He’s not leavin’ for another couple months,” he reminds her. “We’ve got plenty of time.”
“So, does that mean I get your room when you leave?” a fourteen-year-old Parker asks. Wes just pushes his younger brother’s face away.
“Parker!” Meredith gasps.
“No, because I’m getting his room,” Griffin grumbles.
“Are not.”
“Am too!” Suddenly, all hell breaks loose when Parker pulls his eleven-year-old brother in by the neck and ruffles his fist through his hair.
“Guys, seriously?” Meredith says, throwing her hands up in frustration. “Wil–”
She turns to her husband and daughter who were both enthralled by a balloon that had gotten loose and was floating up into the sky. She shakes her head and turns back to her sons to find Wes already breaking up the dogfight. He’s holding them away from each other by their foreheads as the younger two attempted to swipe at their brother.
“Thank you,” she mouths, receiving a nod from her eldest son in response.
“Where are you going, Wes?”
The little voice has them all turning toward Maya. Her small face was set in a frown and the sight was the cutest and saddest thing any of them had ever seen. Wes walks over to where his sister is and flashes her a soft smile.
“I’m goin’ to college, kiddo,” he says, bending down and poking her stomach in an attempt to make her smile. It doesn’t work.
“Do you have to leave?” she groans, looking about a second away from tears. “Daddy already leaves so much.”
Who knew a six-year-old’s words could hurt so much? Wes looks to his father for help, only to see he was just as surprised and saddened at her words as he was. Sometimes he forgets the demanding nature of the Navy is lost on a young mind like hers.
“Yeah but Daddy always comes back, doesn’t he?” he decides. “I’ll come back to visit all the time.”
“Promise?” she asks, holding out a pinky.
Wes’ heart just about breaks. “Promise,” he responds, dwarfing her pinky with his.
“It’s okay, Maya,” Andy pipes up, reaching over to pat her shoulder. “Wes is going to a cool place where he can learn to fly planes like Daddy.”
Maya’s little eyes light up as her head whips back and forth between her oldest brother and her father. “Really?”
Parker can’t help but join in on the fun. He didn’t want to admit it, but his little sister’s excited squeals were everything. “Yeah, he’s going to the Academy and he’s gonna learn how to fly around like this.”
Parker carefully picks his little sister off the ground and places both arms underneath her stomach. He starts to zoom her around like she’s a plane while he makes noises with his mouth, Maya’s melodious giggles drawing the attention of the families around them.
Meredith watches the entire interaction with a smile, pressing a hand over her heart as she holds back tears. She catches a glimpse of Cami with the same expression written across her face and her smile widens.
“That’s so cool,” she squeals once Parker returns her to the ground.
“Maybe one day when I become a pilot, I’ll take you flying in my very own private airplane,” Griffin boasts, bringing her into a side-hug.
“In what world would they let you become a pilot?” Parker scoffs as Maya moves away and trots toward Wes. He wastes no time in hoisting her up on his shoulders. “When I go to the Academy, I’m gonna be the best pilot there.”
“Alright, alright,” Wilson steps in, wanting to avoid another dogfight between his sons. “I admire your enthusiasm, but let’s get you two through high school first.”
“You think we’ll be good pilots like you, Dad?” Griffin asks as he looks up at his father.
Wilson smiles. “I think my children can do whatever they want if they set their mind to it,” he says, looking at his wife who nods in approval.
“Well, that’s cheesy,” Parker mumbles, earning himself a flick in the ear by his older brother.
“Does that mean I can be a pilot too, Daddy?” Maya asks from her place on Wes’ shoulders.
“Of course it does, princess. You can be just like your Aunt Sofia.” That answer seems to satisfy her enough as she wiggles on top of her brother’s shoulders.
Andy tugs on his father’s pant leg to get his attention. “Dad, what if I don’t wanna be a pilot?” he asks timidly.
“That’s okay too, son,” he says softly, ruffling his hair.
“Okay, okay, picture time,” Meredith singsongs. This was getting all too sweet and she’d already cried enough for one day. “Cami, get in here. I want one with all of you in it.”
Cami takes her place next to Wes, bringing Andy to stand in front of her. Griffin stands on Cami’s left while Parker stands on Wes’ right. Maya is already cheesing at the camera, always in a good mood when she was on someone’s shoulders.
“Alright, smile!”
It’s an hour or so later when they finally decide to leave, Wes and Cami going out with a couple of their friends to celebrate his graduation. The remaining boys are dragging their feet all the way to the car while Maya fights sleep in her father’s arms.
“Daddy?”
Wilson was sure she’d finally fallen asleep but looks down to see her wide eyes already looking up at him.
“Yes, princess?” he asks, tucking away a stray piece of hair that had fallen in her face.
“Is Wes gonna leave for a long time like you did?”
Wilson is at a loss for words. He couldn’t exactly explain the mechanics of the Navy to his six-year-old daughter, but her little mind was intuitive enough to know that his job took him away from her and that her brother was going to do the same job.
“Maybe, but like he said: he’ll always come back,” he says. “Just like I do.”
He knows it’s a bit shortsighted to say especially given the nature of his job, but telling her that he couldn’t promise his or Wes’ safety seemed downright cruel.
“Besides, he’s gotta help keep all those pesky little first-grade boys away from you,” he teases, poking her stomach again and again until she starts to giggle.
“Ew, boys are gross,” Maya groans as she squirms in his arms.
“You keep up that mentality, sweetheart.”
Seven years later...
“Parker, you are twenty-one years old; will you please stop trying to mess with your brother’s hair?” Meredith groans as she attempts to wrangle her four sons, two of which were dressed in their caps and gowns. She turns to her husband with her hands on her hips. “Will?”
Wilson laughs heartily at the exasperated expression on his wife’s face. “Honey, just be glad it’s not the other way around or we’d be dealing with a full-on temper tantrum.”
“Hey! I heard that,” Parker says, taking a break from messing with Griffin’s hair to address his father’s comment before going right back to what he was doing. “I’m doing him a favor; his hair’s a fucking mess.”
Griffin slaps his hand away for what seems like the millionth time in five minutes. “It’s only a mess because you keep fucking touching it,” he huffs as he straightens the cap on his head.
“Language,” Meredith scolds.
“Woah, Parker swears first and I’m the one who gets scolded?” Griffin says, pointing to himself. “That’s f–”
A stern look from his mother has him stopping mid sentence.
“–messed up.”
Meredith nods her head with a satisfied look, which quickly turns sour when Parker’s hands reach up in an attempt to ‘fix’ Griffin’s hair again. Griffin once again slaps his brother’s hand away, reaching his own hand up to ruffle it through Parker’s hair. The elder doesn’t take too kindly to his brother’s payback as it starts a mini war of messing with each other’s hair. She looks over to her husband for help only to find him straightening out Andy’s tie.
She can sense the nerves coming off her youngest son from where she was standing, the looming thought of walking at graduation with people a full two years older than him weighing heavily in Andy’s mind. There was no doubt in her own mind that her husband was giving him a quiet pep talk under the guise of fixing his appearance.
Not wanting to ruin their moment, Meredith turns to her oldest son. Wes looked about as done as she felt and their eyes locking is all it takes for him to understand what his mother wants him to do.
The twenty-four-year-old walks over to his two younger brothers in the midst of their goofing around and yanks them away from each other by the backs of their shirt collars. It catches them off guard, as does the whacks to the back of the head Wes delivers.
“Dude, what the hell?” “Um, ow?” Griffin and Parker remark respectively.
“Knock it off, Mom wants a picture,” Wes chides, reaching down to pick up Griffin’s cap that had been knocked off during the scuffle. He wipes off any dirt that may have been on it and shoves it into Griffin’s chest, gesturing for him to put it back on.
“Thank you,” Meredith says, nodding gratefully at her oldest son.
“Kiss ass,” Parker mumbles under his breath.
“Wise ass,” Wes retorts, his voice equally as low.
“You get the name Pops and suddenly you turn into Dad #2,” Griffin grumbles as he puts his cap back on. “I can barely handle Dad #1.”
“I heard that,” Wilson says flatly. He tightens Andy’s tie one more time before patting his shoulder, throwing his son a subtle thumbs up as if to ask if he’s okay. Andy just nods and they both make their way over to where the rest of them are standing.
“You sure you wanna marry this guy, Cami? Because one day that is gonna turn into that,” Parker says as he points first at Wes and then at his father. Camille laughs from where she’s standing next to Meredith.
“You make a valid point, Park, but unfortunately–” she holds up her left hand, showcasing the diamond engagement ring Wes had put there not even a year ago, “I’m all locked in.”
“Y’know, we may be the ones in the military, but I salute you for your service, Camille Adler,” Parker says reverently. “Not everyone would have dealt with this guy for as long as you have.”
Camille presses a hand over her heart like she’s touched, wiping away a fake tear for added effect.
Wes looks blankly between his younger brother and his fianceé. “You two done?”
“Are all of you done?”
Everyone’s eyes snap to Meredith. She looks like she’s just about had it with everyone as she taps her foot impatiently with her arms crossed over her chest.
Wilson may be the one about to get promoted to admiral, but Meredith was a woman not to be messed with. Even Cami felt a little weary.
“Sorry, Mom,” the four boys mumble, suddenly reverting back to when they were kids and they got scolded for goofing off in the supermarket.
Meredith turns towards her husband.
“I love you?” he tries with a smile before backpedaling at the sight of her scowl. Wilson leans forward to peck his wife on the lips as an apology. “Sorry, honey.”
“Do I have to apologize, too?” Camille asks, raising her hand. Meredith shakes her head slightly and squeezes Cami’s arm.
“Now, will the four of you please get it together and let me take this picture? This is the first time I’ve had all my babies back under the same roof in a while and I would like a photo to remember it,” she begs.
Wilson shoos his sons into place. “Alright boys, listen to your mother.”
“Wow, I really appreciate your assistance, sweetheart,” she snorts, shaking her head at his delayed attempt at help. “They get it from you, y’know. Just have to make everything so difficult.”
Wilson squints his eyes at his wife’s smirking face before wrapping his arm around her shoulder and kissing the side of her head.
“Wait, where’s Maya?” Andy asks.
Everyone seems to realize at the same time that there were only four children currently in the frame, not five. A tinkling laugh sounds from a couple of yards away, all seven heads turning toward the noise.
A thirteen-year-old Maya stands on the sidewalk near their driveway, chatting away happily with one of their neighbor’s sons. It was completely innocent; the two of them making friendly conversation about how both of their brothers were in the same graduating class, but all Wilson and the boys could see was that Maya was talking to a boy.
Rather, a boy was talking to Maya.
“Don’t you dare,” Meredith warns as she points at her husband. “Harley is a nice boy and the Fletchers are good people.”
“That’s our daughter,” Wilson practically whines.
“And they’re just talking,” she chides, smacking him lightly on the chest. “She can handle herself.”
“I know she can. She gets that from you,” he retorts. “Doesn’t mean I have to like it.”
A couple feet away, the boys talk amongst themselves with their arms still wrapped around each other’s shoulders.
“Who’s the little punk talking to Maya?” Wes asks as he cranes his head trying to get a good look.
“Harley Fletcher. He lives a couple houses down that way,” Andy says, pointing behind him.
“Okay, so if he lives over there, what’s he doing over here?” Parker asks.
“Maybe because he and Maya are friends?” Cami proposes, well aware of how the four of them got when it came to their sister and wanting to spare the life of poor and unsuspecting Harley.
“Friends, my ass. If he’s anything like his older brother, Angus, that little shit is just trouble waiting to happen,” Griffin says lowly.
Andy furrows his eyebrows at his older brother. “Dude, he’s thirteen.”
“Think of the thoughts you had at thirteen and then get back to me on that.”
Andy’s mouth clamps shut at Griffin’s retort.
Parker, who couldn’t give less of a shit about some scrawny little punk, decides now’s the perfect time to take that family photo. He whistles loudly, catching the attention of everyone including Harley and Maya.
“Hey, princess! Photo time!” he calls out.
Maya excuses herself politely and trots her way over to her family, her sundress and crossbody purse flouncing around her.
“I’m here, I’m here,” she says breathlessly. “Sorry.”
“It’s alright, honey,” Meredith reassures. “What were you and Harley talking about?”
“Nothing,” Maya says, passing her purse to her dad to hold and taking her spot on the opposite side of Andy.
Wilson looks at Meredith with wide eyes, clearly not satisfied with his daughter’s short and clipped answer. His wife brushes him off, finally ready to get her picture.
“Was that your boyfriend?” Parker teases Maya as she comes to stand next to them.
“No,” Maya scoffs. “His name is Harley and he lives down the street.”
“Riiight,” Parker drawls as he winks at his little sister.
“Just say the word and I’ll take care of him,” Griffin says, only half-joking.
Andy shakes his head as Maya groans. “God, I’m never gonna get a boyfriend with you guys around,” she grumbles.
“Yep, that’s the plan,” Wes says before flashing an award-winning smile at his mother’s awaiting camera.
“Okay, everyone smile!”
Several hundred photos later, the seven of them begin to pack up and head over to the school. Wes and Cami agree to drive over a little later with Parker and Maya while their parents drive Griffin and Andy. The two of them were already in the back of their mom’s Escalade bickering about what radio station to listen to.
“Maya, make sure you bring a jacket for when it gets cold later tonight. You too, Parker,” Meredith says as she kisses them both on the cheek.
“Ma, I’m twenty-one,” Parker scoffs.
“Being twenty-one doesn’t make you immune to the cold, sweetie,” she says, reaching up to pinch his cheek. “I love you guys, don’t be late!”
“Love you too,” the two of them call out before making their way inside the house. Suddenly, it’s just her and Wes standing by the front door.
“Call me when you guys get there? I’ll try to make sure there’s enough seats for all of us, but just try to get there on time.”
Wes chuckles at his mother’s frantic state. “Don’t worry, Mom. Cami and I got them. I think you’ve got the hard part, taking care of those two plus Dad.”
Meredith just rolls her eyes, bidding her eldest son goodbye as he shuts the front door behind him. She lets out a big breath once everyone is in their places, suddenly feeling like she’d lost all of her energy. She pinches the bridge of her nose as she tries to will away the pounding in her head. Who knew five grown kids could tire her out more now than when they were younger? A hand on her shoulder catches her attention.
“You okay, Mer?” Wilson asks worriedly.
“Yeah, just…exhausted,” she says, breathing out a laugh. “Maybe I didn’t get enough sleep last night, but your kids sure know how to tire me out.”
“Oh, so now they’re my kids?” he jokes. He holds his hand out in front of him, beckoning her for the keys to the car. “Here, let me drive.”
Meredith almost seems hesitant but concedes when she realizes her husband isn’t going to take no for an answer. She drops the keys in his hand and makes her way over to the passenger side door with him following close behind.
“Y’know, you really should be getting more sleep. It helps reduce your risk for disease,” Wilson says as he holds back a laugh.
Meredith whips her head towards her husband. “Are you making fun of me?” she pouts.
“Nope, just quoting this one med student I went on a date with years ago,” he says, shaking his head like he had no idea what she was talking about.
“Mm, you better not get smart with me, Captain Hayes. You’re not quite admiral yet.”
Wilson grabs the passenger handle and opens the door for his wife. “I wouldn’t dream of it, Dr. Hayes.”
Five years later...
“God damn it,” Maya huffs loudly, throwing her hands up in frustration.
She’d been trying to get the zipper on the back of her dress up for the past ten minutes to no avail. She groans and flops on her bed in defeat, thankful that those last few stubborn inches were covered by her freshly-curled hair. A sudden knock on her door breaks her out of her self-inflicted pity party.
“Hey, you okay?” Cami asks as she peeks her head inside Maya’s bedroom.
“I’m fine,” she mumbles, covering her eyes with her arm. She just wanted this stupid day to be over already.
Cami eyes Maya warily before leaning down and whispering something in her three-year-old daughter’s ear. She seems hesitant at first, but with a smile and nod from her mother, Meredith scuffles past the doorway. She’s too small to pull herself onto the bed, so she settles with hugging Maya’s leg.
Despite her horrible mood, Maya can’t help but smile at the gesture from her niece. She brings the hand not covering her face down and finds the top of Meredith’s head, smoothing down some of the stray pieces that had come undone from her pigtails. She looks down through the gap made by her arm, smiling when her eyes make contact with her niece’s. Meredith giggles and the two of them begin a small game of peek-a-boo, the game ending with Maya reaching down and bringing her niece to sit on the bed next to her head. Meredith wastes no time wrapping her little arms around Maya’s head as best as she can in a makeshift hug.
“Are you sad, Aunt Maya?” she asks, a small frown set on her face.
Maya didn’t even realize she was crying until Meredith’s tiny finger wipes away a tear that had fallen down her cheek.
“A little,” she says with a watery smile. “I just wish your grandma was here, that’s all.”
Maya knows Meredith probably doesn’t know who she’s talking about. She’d been barely a year old when her mom had passed away and any all knowledge of her grandmother’s existence was through stories they told her.
“Baby, why don’t you go downstairs with Uncle Andy while I talk to Aunt Maya, okay?” Cami says softly, helping her daughter down from the bed.
Maya looks over to see Andy standing in the doorway to her room, looking equally as somber as she felt. He flashes her a small smile before taking Meredith’s hand and leading her out of the room.
Cami waits for Maya to say something first as she sits on the bed next to her. It’s silent for a few moments, the sound of her deep breaths in and out being the only noise. Once they can no longer hear Andy and Meredith on the stairs it’s like the damn breaks, her breaths becoming ragged as she sobs into her arm.
“Oh, sweetie,” Cami says, pulling Maya up and bringing her into a hug. She feels herself tearing up as well at the broken sobs leaving Maya’s lips. She can feel her tears soaking through the material of her dress, but Cami couldn’t have cared less.
“I miss her, Cam. I miss her so much,” Maya cries, tightening her arms around her sister-in-law.
“I know, I know,” she soothes, rubbing her hand up and down her back. “I miss her too.”
“She should be here right now. She should be the one zipping up my dress and fixing my hair a-a-and forcing the boys to take a shitty group photo that’ll take a million shots to get right,” Maya rambles.
Cami rests a hand on Maya’s head and guides her head into the crook of her neck. “I know.”
“Maya, I know nothing I say right now can take away from what you’re feeling, but I have no doubt in my mind that your mom so proud of the woman you’ve become and that she’s going to be with you every step of the way no matter what.” She says it like a promise, exactly like how she means it. “If there’s anything I learned about your mom, it’s that you guys were her everything and she loved you so much. More than you’ll ever know.”
Maya stays in Cami’s embrace for a few more moments, letting her words sink in and allowing herself to calm down.
“She loved you too, Cam.” Maya sniffles and pulls away, swiping away the remaining tears on her face. “Thank you.”
Cami smiles, grabbing Maya’s hand and squeezing. “Of course and hey, if you need someone for a shitty family photo, I’m your girl.”
Maya laughs and shakes her head. “I don’t think that’s a task that you’ll want to take on willingly,” she teases. She blots at her face and groans when she sees specks of mascara on her fingertips. “God, I definitely ruined my makeup. Does it look horrible?”
“Your makeup looks fine, plus I don’t think it’s possible for you to look horrible,” she scoffs, gesturing for her to stand up. “Now, what’s this about a zipper?”
Cami guides Maya back in front of the mirror, stepping behind her and gesturing for her to move her hair out of the way. She zips the dress the rest of the way before resting her hands on the younger girl’s shoulders and smiling at her through the mirror.
“Dressing to impress?” she smirks. Maya just rolls her eyes and walks to her desk chair to put on her cap and gown. “Does this mean we’re finally gonna get to meet this boy you’ve been seeing? What’s his name? Aiden?”
“It’s Aaron and you can meet him, but it just might be awkward since we’re not ‘seeing each other’ anymore,” she says as she shrugs on her gown.
“What? What happened?” Cami gasps. She was the only one who knew about Maya’s sort-of boyfriend of a month and from their last check-in, she thought they’d been doing well.
“Brought up the prospect of him meeting my family and he ran for the hills like I expected,” she shrugs. “Happened about a week ago.”
“You don’t seem too broken up about it.”
“I mean, we’re graduating, so I don’t think it would’ve lasted anyway. Plus, I never count on my ‘relationships’ lasting when I’ve got the whole brigade waiting to interrogate him,” Maya says, gesturing outside to where her father and brothers were waiting downstairs. “I swear, the day I meet a guy that can meet all of them without running, I’m gonna marry him.”
“God help him,” Cami jokes before making her way out of her bedroom. She begins to walk down the stairs when she hears her husband in a heated and hushed argument with someone on the phone. She slows down when he comes into to view and leans against the railing, watching as he paces back and forth.
“Fine! You wanna continue to be a jackass, be my guest, but just remember that we’re not always gonna be here to save your ass, alright?” Wes says angrily before hanging up. He lets out a loud groan and sweeps a hand over his face.
“Griff?” Cami asks as she walks the rest of the way down the stairs, stopping when she’s in front of her husband.
“Yeah,” Wes says, staring at the screen of his phone one more time before turning it off and shoving it into his pocket. “Asshole didn’t even seem sorry. I mean, you think he’d be able to get over himself for one day just to be there for our sister.”
“He’s struggling, baby,” Cami reasons, running her hands up and down his arms. “These last few years have been really hard on him.”
“I know that, but I lost a mom too and you don’t see me cutting my entire family off and fucking off to other places.”
“Wes, people grieve differently. Griff has always been this way. Sooner or later, he’s gonna need his family and it’s your job to be there when he does.”
Her husband sighs. He knows she’s right, but two years of watching his younger brother suffer and trying to hide it was far too long. “I know, I just can’t believe he’s not here.”
“Can’t believe who’s not here?”
They break apart to see Maya looking at them curiously from the stairs. She’s wearing her cap and gown and if Cami had to guess, she’d touched up her makeup as well.
“Uh, Griff,” Wes explains, taking his phone out of his pocket and waving it in the air. “I was just talking to him. Told me to tell you congratulations.”
“Ah, that sucks, I wish I could’ve talked to him. I’ll text him ‘thank you’ later, I guess,” she says as she walks down the stairs, adding as she passes: “Out of all the weeks he could’ve had mandatory flight training, it had to be the week of my graduation. Where’s nepotism when you need it?”
She shrugs and makes her way into the living room. Wes and Cami share a look before following after her.
