I thought it was a good idea to suffer from something other than the heat, and put on the final two eps of Doom Patrol. It's going great!

Is Mark Sheppard just- in everything?
I genuinely cannot tell if he's made so much stuff in so many places that I'm just bound to keep seeing him, or if it's just that he has a niche in the type of media I gravitate towards?

ailesswhumptober day 28: internal bleeding / needles and stitches / "i didn't think the wound was that bad..."
chapter 7 / 7 of i'm too close to breaking | rated t, chose not to warn
no matter how many times vic goes on missions with the doom patrol, he will never stop being surprised at how bizarre they are. the missions, not the doom patrol; getting used to them was surprisingly simple.
being encased in boiling wax, awake and breathing but unable to do anything else, wouldn't have been so bad if it wasn't preceded by the candlemaker disguising itself as doctor cowboy. paralyzed and suffocating in viscous liquids is almost par for the course for their team, abstract concepts brought to life isn't uncommon, and not a day goes by without some sort of family drama, but the combination is draining.
"vic! a little help here, please!"
it's the please from cliff's disembodied head which really gets under vic's skin. it's polite and panicked and everything cliff isn't, but then again, cliff usually isn't encased in wax and scattered across a fairground. vic ignores the flames as he rushes to retrieve cliff's head and place it safely on a miraculously intact red wagon.
"i gotta check on the others, and then i'll help put you back together," vic calls over his shoulder.
cliff makes a few protesting noises before grumbling that cyborg should get his ass in gear if he ever wants a chance at proving himself to the justice league.
he runs on the smoldering ground, grateful that the wax and flames have dissipated. grid scans every person that they pass, confirming that those who were standing or sitting in place survived the candlemaker with minimal surface-level burns. the ones who had been in motion, running or being trampled on as the candlemaker attacked, have moderate internal bleeding at best. grid calls for various emergency services to be dispatched to their location, and vic tunes it out as he follows dorothy's sobs to a crumpled tent.
"dorothy!" the girl is curled up into a ball, buried beneath the fabric. a support beam covers her legs, and a quick scan reveals dislocated bones but no nerve damage. "hey, dorothy, can you look up for me? i need to check your eyes."
dorothy shakes her head. "leave me here forever and ever."
"you know i can't do that."
"you have to! it's all my fault that everyone got hurt, and i knew it would happen but i didn't care and now everyone's hurt."
vic sighs, trying to clear the figurative fog away while the literal smoke covers everything in a haze. "they're gonna be okay," he says. "grid's got medics and firefighters on the way, ready to take care of them."
"robo-boy!" kipling shouts. "your team needs you. leave this one to me." his face is battered and bruised, and he has niles's body in his arms. "those messes out there are your family; the caulders are mine."
---
rita's skin sloughs off her body, leaving her aching and raw. oddly enough, she can still see everything clearly in front of her; her eyes are still where they belong, not floating around in the blob.
"rita! thank god you're okay!" larry runs up to her, wax stalactites hanging from his sleeves, and she realizes her body is still intact.
"the candlemaker," rita whispers, trying to shake off the last of the wax. "is it gone? where's dorothy?"
"dorothy fought it off. last i saw, kipling's with her and what's left of the chief."
the sounds of the carnival attendees returning to life amidst the destruction fill the air. rita takes a deep breath, gathering her courage to become a hero and help guide the people to safety, when larry's words set in.
"what's left of the chief?" she repeats. "then he"
"dead," larry confirms. "i still don't get it, but whatever magic bound his life to dorothy's was cut off when she banished the candlemaker or whatever."
or whatever is as fitting of an epithet as anything for the chief's demise. or perhaps roxy and all the terrible memories associated with her have warped rita's brain, leaving her incapable of grief and sympathy for the man who gave her a chance when no one else would. she looks around the fair again, at the blaring red and white lights and the actual heroes, and turns her eyes to the ground.
"is that cliff's shirt?"
"what?" larry asks, following her gaze. "huh, yeah. it is." he bends down to pick it up, and a piece of cliff's torso falls from it. "we're never gonna hear the end of this, are we?"
---
kay's room doesn't have a lot of light. she knows how to do her puzzle by feeling out the jagged edges, starting with the borders and corners before working on the middle. a bright flash temporarily blinds her, and then jane sits beside her.
jane, who shouldn't be here. kay's only five, and she doesn't know a lot about the world or the underground, but she does know that her room is her own. momma stopped showing up ages ago, long before she got her puzzle, and even daddy isn't allowed to step in to it, instead waiting in the doorway for kay to go to him.
"please," jane says in a quiet voice, "i need to know what you need. what do you need me to do?"
the only thing she needed was harry, and kay knows jane brought him back from the well the same way she knows someone wouldn't let him return to her hands.
"i'm doing my puzzle." the field of wildflowers is almost done. kay really likes that part of the picture. "do you want to put the gazebo together?" she asks, 'cause it's the part she doesn't like.
"i… yeah, if that will help."
jane doesn't scoot any closer, and waits for a bit before reaching in front of her for the pieces. they sit together, quietly doing the puzzle that will never be done, and suddenly kay's vision blurs. tears fall on to her dress, leaving a patch on her lap that will definitely make the monsters upset.
"kay? what's wrong?"
she shakes her head, 'cause she doesn't know. everything just feels off, like the engine powering driver 8's train has stopped working and now everyone's rushing to her instead of staying in their stations. maybe something on the surface is wrong, but if driver 8's train is down, then jane's gonna be here instead of up, and then no one can keep her safe. kay's tummy hurts, so maybe whoever is up is already in danger, but if she hurts and the train is down, there's no way to make anyone feel better.
kay wipes her eyes with her sleeve. jane's finished the gazebo, even has part of the sky complete, and that's not right. "i never finish that part," she whispers.
maybe that's why she's crying, 'cause she doesn't know what will happen if the puzzle is complete.
---
"no!" dorothy cries. "you're a liar!"
"guilty as charged," kipling replies with a wink, wincing as a cut above his eye reopens and sends a slow drip of blood down his brow. "in the grand scheme of things i'm one of the best, but i'm not lying about this. look at him, dorothy," he says urgently, yet softly. "i'm sorry, but niles is gone, and he wouldn't want you to waste away in his absence."
"stop saying he's dead!" dorothy turns away from him, pulling bits of the fallen tent around her upper body.
kipling waves his hands, casting a minor spell to disentangle the fabric and support beams from dorothy's body. "i'm afraid i don't have anything to heal your legs, but we have someone here who can." a colorful ambulance materializes beside them, honking cheerfully. "i believe you've already met danny."
that finally gets the girl's attention. "danny the street?"
danny the street, danny the brick. danny the tire, danny the ambulance flashes across their windshield. i'm so sorry, love.
they open their doors, sending out a stretcher.
"danny'll get you to a hospital," kipling explains, setting the chief's body on one of the seats. "i'm gonna levitate you onto the stretcher, all right?"
"only if danny takes papa to the hospital with me," dorothy whispers.
"of course they will," kipling says, using the last of his depleted energy reserves to secure father and daughter in the ambulance.
---
jane's body, surrounded by baby doll's stuffed animals, is neatly tucked into a hospital bed. cliff had been surprisingly astute in noticing that 'miranda' wasn't who she claimed to be, and whoever she was got pulled back underground during their encounter with the candlemaker, leaving jane half-awake in the aftermath.
"i don't get it," vic says, shaking his head. "i didn't think the wound was that bad. we got her to danny in time to stabilize the wounds to her abdomen and get her into surgery. the anesthesia should've worn off by now."
larry still hasn't told them about meeting kay, and he doesn't plan on it. the girl stayed up for a couple hours each day of their stay in alabama before baby doll emerged; she slowly switched to jane or hammerhead after, then sometimes to 'miranda,' and there was no indication from any of them that they knew kay had left the underground.
"it might be another mental block," he says. "a person needs time to recover after a fight like that, and she's got dozens of people. i think we can give her a couple more days under. as long as she's here and hooked up to the monitors, we'll know she's okay."

A hypothetical god tier for Willoughby Kipling from Doom Patrol: the Witch of Rage.
A Witch of Rage is among those who explore faith in possibility. They are motivated by themselves to manipulate defiance. (x) The Witch of Rage constantly wishes things were different and hates complacency. (x) They are the Harbinger Revolutionary, defined by fixing defiance. (x) Their opposite is the Heir of Hope. Their inverse is the Seer of Hope. They share their personality with the Bard of Time. The Witch of Rage would quest on a planet similar to the Land of Clarity and Rage, reigned over by Ares (God of War). They would rise to ascension on the wings of imps. (x)(x)(x)
