what have i done lol-
I somehow managed to get back into The Promised Neverland and decided ‘hey, wouldn’t it be kind of silly if there was a crossover with my current interests’ and i realize this might make very little sense but this is created from self indulgent bullshit
I’m only using RC9GN for now but this will likely stay in wip mode for now! (this is not the angst idea i had in mind for finja and nomi- that’s something different)
Though to explain my thoughts for this nonsensical idea-
🏠 For the time being, Marci is the caretaker of the children- she is always good to them until the very end; as much as it pains her- she knows what needs to be done and makes sure the kids never know what happens on the other side of that gate
🏠 The Sorcerer is an ancient demon. He becomes the primary foe that our main characters will have to face after escaping from the orphanage
🏠 McFist and Viceroy work for Lambda. Viceroy administers the tests, creating certain technology which keeps the test subjects complacent while McFist ‘runs’ the facility under the Sorcerer’s occasional supervision
🏠 “Finja” is this crossover’s William Minerva. He was a member of a resistance though no one knows what happened to him- he seemingly disappeared one day, and his title back then - the Ninja - faded into the wind… (there were others like him, but they had barely any luck)
🏠 Skip to present times when Marci’s the current caretaker- we’re introduced to Randy Cunningham and his best Howard Weinerman, they’re nearing twelve but still have a bit before they’re adopted. Randy longs and hopes for a happy family, and who knows maybe they’ll want Howard too
🏠 Norrisville High are of course, the orphans. Randy is an adventurous boy- much more than his friend Howard. He spends his time in the forest; things are happy and they couldn’t be better- and then it’s announced someone’s been adopted
🏠 He feels happy for them, but he also can’t shake a feeling- Randy decides to bring the adopted child their left behind stuffed toy, say his final farewell
🏠 What he sees takes him by surprise (he feels sick to the stomach). Randy is terrified out of his mind as he remains rooted there, unable to will himself to move but there wasn’t any way to forget that thing which ate his sibling - even if they weren’t really related - and he knew he had to do something. He would escape with his family
🏠 Randy immediately goes to tell Howard. Howard is, of course, horrified by this but he doesn’t want to get involved- though after a bit of convincing from Randy, he reluctantly decides to help out (although he’s made to promise not to tell anyone- not yet-)
🏠 I feel at some point Julian, Theresa, and Debbie eventually are clued in on what happened- Randy is desperate to get everyone out, and eventually he learns of “Finja”. He decides he needs to take on the mantle, become the next ninja
🏠 I don’t know who would be sent to Lambda, if that arc happens at all
🏠 (it would be a little funny and mean of me if it was Randy though- in a bad ending version)
🏠 I’m not entirely sure what happens after this, but I do know that eventually we have a scene parallel to the escape scene- Randy and the rest of his allies had trained up to this point, clueing in everyone else (not completely, as he doesn’t want to fully scare them)
🏠 if this does get written- it might not happen anytime soon! I still have a one-shot to work on and a potential multi-chaptered work (unless it’s just a really long one-shot), on top of other projects but I simply couldn’t leave this idea alone for some reason. It doesn’t help I was talking about the anime last night with a friend of mine heh
With that, I’ll be on my way- (sort of) but I hope you enjoy this! This is me and my weird self indulgent ideas-
I have no idea what this alternate universe would even be called, hence why I’m once again leaving it to vote

Norrisville High, 1984
Mac Antfee - Junior, 18
Mac is the current Ninja of Norrisville, and has been for the last five years (redid freshman year three times)
Mac grew up hunting with his family; he’s not afraid of the rough-and-tumble fighting the Ninja has to do and will often attack with his bare hands
His relationship with Hannibal is very tense. They used to be closer at the beginning of high school, but Mac is beginning to let his jealousy get the better of him
The biggest conflict here is that Mac Antfee was not well-liked, but the ninja was. Everything he went on to do was driven by a deep-rooted fear that he would become obsolete without the suit
Hannibal McFist - Junior, 16
Member of the NHS football team and just organized the brand-new NHS Mustache Society. Hannibal is popular and rich and well-liked. Nobody quite understands why he still hangs around Mac but no one says anything either. Mac knows he’s out of place in Hannibal’s social circles
Hannibal knows Mac is the ninja, but doesn’t do much about it. He’s not like Howard - Hannibal doesn’t like to get involved with Ninja Business
Hannibal is head-over-heels for Marci but knows he has no chance with her
Marci Kranksi - Junior, 16
Marci is an Army Brat - her father serves in the military, so she moves states every couple of years
She stayed in Norrisville for only two years (her sophomore and junior years, 1983/84)
Marci is a heartthrob, but she’s very loyal to her out-of-state boyfriend (who goes on to be Bash’s bio father)
Marlene Gatlin - Junior, 17
Mary goes on to be the crooked Mrs. Driscoll, but in high school she was very popular. She’s pretty and funny and loves drama
Mary is high up socially, think cheerleader popular, but prefers the science wing and the nerds that are in it
Her love life is MESSY. Everybody wants Mary Gatlin. She’s the It Girl. Somewhere along the way it became common knowledge that if you wanted to ask her out, you had to get her attention by pulling the fire alarm. We know her type lmaoooo
Mac is in love with her, but of course Mary is more interested in Hannibal (she doesn’t date gingers). This is another point of contention between the boys
Willem Viceroy III - Freshman, 13
Willem - never Will or god forbid William, he’s very insistent about it - is a science prodigy. He’s in the same chemistry class as Hannibal and Mac, which is how they met
Willem doesn’t like Hannibal necessarily, but he’s a nearly impenetrable guard against being bullied. He’s a little bit like the group’s pet freshman and annoying as it is, it keeps him safe
Mort Weinerman - Freshman, 14
Mort is the most loser-est guy on this list. He’s the faceless freshman that wants to be cool
He’s part of the chess club and is very advanced in math. He has a couple band geek acquaintances but no solid friends
Mort knows Willem by name, but Willem doesn’t seem to know Mort. Same with Hannibal, Mary, Marci, and Mac
To be so honest, Morty here has no real tie to their plots. Like generally I think he grew up in a different state because of the accent so this is a Big Exception. But I couldn’t do this and not include him ok🙄

Congratulations sinners in Canada and Australia. You might get: Harry the Viceroy of Canada?????? and/or Australia????? by u/GreatGossip
Congratulations, sinners in Canada and Australia. You might get: Harry, the Viceroy of Canada?????? and/or Australia????? River just issued this video, where he claims Harry refers to himself as "Viceroy" - of what is not known.Harry was TOLD NOT TO GO TO THE UK, but did not care and took the first plane. Harry is afraid to be blamed if KC passes. He wanted to connect with KC, but everybody in the palace just saw the visit as performative. Harry wanted the press coverage and to impress KC. Harry wants to be seen as an ambassedor in Canada, meeting dignitaries, First Nations etc. Harry has been suggesting this to both KC and William, but to no avail, of course. The Grifters had been adviced by Ari Emanuel and WME to reconcile with BRF. Netflix is dissappointed with the Grifters and not interested in anything but royal gossip. So now we know why Madam tried to "behave royally" and did not barge in front of Harry and why Harry is allowed to be in the limelight. It is in anticipation of big things to come the Grifter way. We also know why Madam went to The Times directly with the proposal for Harry returning to royal duties and not to her usual tabloids. We also know why William shut down ANY royal role for Harry immediatly.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8zdrWoJQ6k post link: https://ift.tt/14ox0Ma author: GreatGossip submitted: February 19, 2024 at 12:54AM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit

Mary Leiter, Lady Curzon, wearing a 1903 gown, The Peacock Dress", by Jean-Philippe Worth (House of Worth) • Portrait by William Logsdail (English,1859-1944) • 1909
Tumblr media
The Peacock Dress today behind glass at the Curzon family seat in of Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire, England. Via/ Flickr
Lord and Lady Curzon (who was American) would end up in India, then a part of the English Empire. Lord Curzon was made Viceroy of India, which made his wife the Vicereine- the highest title that a woman in India could hold at the time.
To celebrate the 1902 coronation of King Edward VII, Lord Curzon decided to hold a grand party in honor of the new monarch in 1903, known as the Delhi Durbar. For the occasion, Mary was to have the most incredible gown created which would showcase the talents of Indian artisans, a personal passion of the Vicereine. However, the dress was to be designed and sewn by famed French couturier, House of Worth. The Edwardian gown was made from fabric painstakingly embroidered in India, which was then sent to France to be fashioned before being sent back to India. What makes this gown so unbelievably unique is that every part of the gown and train is embroidered in alternating peacock feather patterns, earning it the nickname of the "Peacock Dress". The decoration comes from metal threads expertly affixed to the fabric. The gown is also embellished with glass beads, rhinestones, and shimmering iridescent green beetle wings. The gown is so covered in embroidery that it weighs 10 pounds, more than the weight of a small load of laundry!
The Resplendent Outfit: The outrageous, extravagant, often humorous, and sometimes beautiful outfits worn by the subjects of old portraits.
Outrageous ? (It depends on where you sit.)
Extravagant ✅️
Humorous. ❎️
Beautiful. ✅️

Harry and Meghan in Jamaica are soft-power dynamite. Britain is left with kryptonite William and Kate
Tumblr media
Nels Abbey
At times like these, it’s clear that the Sussexes represent a missed opportunity for a UK that needs friends in the world
Fri 26 Jan 2024 11.25 CET
Tumblr media
Left to right: the Duchess and Duke of Sussex; the Jamaican prime minister, Andrew Holness, and his wife, Juliet; and its culture minister, Olivia Grange, at the premiere of Bob Marley: One Love in Kingston on 23 January 2024. Photograph: Jason Koerner/Getty Images for Paramount Pictures,
A popular Nigerian adage says “the cow never knows the value of its tail until it is chopped off”. In many tragic ways, this speaks to today’s Britain. From EU membership, to competent leadership, to low inflation, it seems necessary for Britain to lose things to appreciate their importance.
This week, look at Prince Harry and Meghan being feted in Jamaica. See the soft-power skills they carry with them, and think about that Nigerian adage.
In much of the British media, Harry and Meghan are all-year panto villains. But around the world, they could not be more loved – often for the very reasons they are despised in the British media. They are the soft power we could have enjoyed with the increasingly dominant, increasingly self-confident non-white world, especially the Commonwealth.
It’s not just that they are royals. Prince William and Kate headed to “no problem” Jamaica in 2022, and encountered problems aplenty. As their PR fiasco unfolded, they were derided for shaking hands with Jamaican children through wire fences, and for motoring viceroy-style through crowded streets in a fancy Land Rover. At the nightmare’s end, Jamaica basically handed Britain its P45, informing the royals of its intention to be a republic, to “move on”.
Tumblr media
View image in fullscreenPrince Harry larks about with Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica, 2012. Photograph: John Stillwell/PA
Still, Harry has something the royals he left behind and the likes of Chillax Cameron can never have. He has familiarity, an ease with difference – and he has Meghan.
In 2012, he also had the love of the UK press and public. He was praised for his warm embrace of the then Jamaican PM, Portia Simpson-Miller, and was photographed larking about with Usain Bolt. “He has shown himself to be a natural ambassador, a diplomat in a very real sense – one hug from him has (at least partly) dissipated the bad feeling of generations … It is inconceivable that any other royal could have pulled this off quite so effectively,” gushed the Mail on Sunday.
‘God Save the King’ doesn’t fall from Jamaican lips so easily. Soon we’ll be a republic
Barbara Blake-HannahRead more
But that was then, before the British media’s own version of Orwell’s “two minutes hate” became a thing. Now, much of the press sees Harry and Meghan glad-handing and being glad-handed in Jamaica, surfing the love at the premiere of the Bob Marley biopic, and they don’t much like it. “Meghan and Harry pose next to anti-royal Jamaican prime minister who wants to ditch the monarchy and warned Wills and Kate they’ll never be king and queen of his nation – as Charles undergoes prostate surgery and the Princess of Wales recovers in hospital,” thundered the Mail. “The hubris of Harry and Meghan’s Jamaican photoshoot,” snorted the Spectator. “Crown fools: ‘Provocative’ Harry & Meghan spark royal row as they meet Jamaican politicians plotting to oust Charles as head of state,” jeered the Sun.
Britain understood Harry’s value and soft power in 2012, so what changed? Answer: Harry fell in love with, and married, a Black woman. That could have been a boon for this country, here and abroad; instead it’s a might-have-been. And what might have been to our reputational benefit is what has been happening in Jamaica.
The UK headlines and sour grapes tell you one thing: we messed up and we know it. Meghan was, and remains, soft-power dynamite, and all we have now is the soft-power kryptonite of Wills and Kate and the Windsor “firm” that spurned her. Still, that’s us: we never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

EC Comics' New Horror Hosts Revealed!
By Chet Reams
Tumblr media
The new trio of horror hosts for the upcoming EC Comics revival have been revealed! Introducing "The Grave-Digger", "The Grim Inquisitor", & "The Tormentor". These three new characters have been designed by Dustin Weaver, and are planned to be used throughout the upcoming EC Comics horror-themed titles that Oni Press is co-publishing with EC!
In alphabetical order of name/title, here are their character images and descriptions as provided to Crypt of MADness by Oni Press:
The Grave-Digger: IN HIS CEMETERY, EVERY TOMBSTONE TELLS A TALE! As the central host of the upcoming EPITAPHS FROM THE ABYSS series from EC Comics and Oni Press, The Grave-Digger’s charming visage will soon regale readers far and wide with the tales of murderous intent and ill fortune that earned his cemetery’s denizens their places six feet deep.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Grim Inquisitor: THE DEACON OF DOOM! THE VICEROY OF THE VICE! THE PRINCIPAL OF PUNISHMENT … OR SO HE’D LIKE YOU TO THINK! A mad monk with a fanatic’s eye for keeping his secret sect’s surprisingly extensive bureaucracy of terror running like clockwork, The Grim Inquisitor fears no man . . . except The Supreme Inquisitor, who demands extremely exacting results from his right-hand man and deputy master of obscure occult rites.
Tumblr media
The Tormentor: INTRODUCING HER ROYAL TRAVESTY OF PAIN! A one-eyed butcheress with a penchant for playful flaying and audacious amputation, there is no weapon of opportunity or implement of torture too grisly to escape The Tormentor’s notice. But she still holds a fondness for “the classics” – like her red-hot poker and rusty pruning shears!
Tumblr media
(All character art by Dustin Weaver; images copyright William M Gaines Agent, Inc.)
From the official Press Release (provided by Oni Press):
"PORTLAND OR, (June 25, 2024) – JUST AS EVERY COFFIN NEEDS A CORPSE, SO TOO DOES EVERY STORY NEED A STORYTELLER! FORTUNATELY, THIS TERRIFYING TRIO HAS YOU HANDLED ON ALL COUNTS . . . Just one month away from the long-awaited resurrection of the infamous and influential EC Comics in the pages of EPITAPHS FROM THE ABYSS #1, Oni Press – the multiple Eisner and Harvey Award-winning publisher of groundbreaking comics and graphic novels since 1997 – is proud to unveil the first look at EC’s all-new, never-before-seen, dead-and-not-getting-better-anytime-soon trio of horror hosts . . . Meet EC’s all-new masters of menace: The Grave-Digger, The Tormentor, and The Grim Inquisitor! Making their first full appearance on the EPITAPHS FROM THE ABYSS #1 Horror Host Variant cover by acclaimed artist Dustin Weaver (Avengers, Paklis), Weaver’s work on and character designs for EC’s new torturous trio will be featured throughout the double-sized, 40-page issue arriving in comic shops worldwide on July 24th . . . and continue through multiple new EC horror series yet-to-be-revealed in the future. “Usually a big part of designing characters is costuming, but in looking back at the original Tales From the Crypt comics, it's clear that the most important and defining features of the horror hosts are their ghoulish faces,” said Dustin Weaver. “It's all about the faces, and with these modern host designs I wanted to carry on that tradition. Making sure the faces were suitably fiendish, properly cruel, and the right amount of unseemly was key, but there's also an effort here to go a step further and bring some more thought and characterization to their costuming and physicality as well. Ultimately, it's just such a treat to draw characters so unabashedly wicked.” “Crafted from the dead center of depravity and delight, these new horror hosts are primed and ready to assume their roles as storytellers,” said Corey Mifsud, Executive Director of William M. Gaines Agent, Inc. “All three characters honor the creepily comical spirit of EC, but contribute uniquely twisted points of views that will surely keep the reader up at night!”"

hey, lover! - a sequel to love me, normally!! where they kiss. that's it. that's the fic. featuring vyncent's tail having a mind of it's own, the phrase oh how the turns have tabled, homophobic dakota, and one demonkicks line (1/1)

canon compliant fics (stuff that could have happened, but we didn't see. mainly gore)

Emperor Aurangzeb's grave... Alamgir was many things to many people but who was he really? While all of Aurangzeb’s forefathers had grand resting places, he himself chose a bare minimum one and even opted to pay for it from his own pocket. Why did he chose to do that? It is hard to describe how simple the grave really is. There's hardly anything around it. There's simple grave at center with a plant surrounded by mud which is covered with a white cloth in a non-descript lane which you have to walk via dusty other lanes with nothing, no structure worth noting on the way to it - whole journey to his grave perplexes your brain.
On Friday, the 4th of March, 1707, at 8 am, in the fiftieth year of his reign, Aurangzeb Alamgir died after performing morning prayers. He was 89 years old and a deeply pious man. Unlike all his predecessors, he believed that the state treasury was not his personal property and stitched caps and copied Qur’ans which were anonymously sold to earn him the money he needed to buy the plot of land for his grave. A simple red stone slab, three yards long, two yards wide, a few inches deep with a hollowed out centre marks the spot. The slab itself bears no inscription whatsoever, allowing a small portion of the grave to remain open to the sky. Here a small “sabza” shrub grows. The grave is inside the “Dargah” or tomb complex, of Sheikh Zainuddin Shirazi, a Sufi saint of the Chishti order, who it is said, Aurangzeb felt deeply inspired by. The cost of the tomb is said to have been only 14 rupees and 12 annas.
When erstwhile British Viceroy, Lord Curzon visited the tomb he was horrified to see how simple it was and so ordered Nizam who then ruled over the land to construct marble wall around it. Roof was still kept open, uncovered with only sky as its covering as per his wishes.
It is said that Aurangzeb Alamgir asked his sons to collect 4 rupees and 2 annas from his mahaldar, who kept this money on the emperor’s behalf. This money was earned by the emperor through sewing caps (used during prayer). Then he asks his sons to collect three hundred five rupees from his purse and distribute it to faqirs (beggars) on the day of his death. This money was the wage earned by copying the Quran.
Last slide is a painting of the tomb by the British artist William Carpenter in the 1850s.

So. I saw this post and now I can't stop thinking about it. As a result I present to you guys the parallels between Michael Afton from FnaF and Archangel Michael from spn. These parallels are completely far-fetched and weird and I'm fucking nuts and so not normal about these two.
• They both have absolutely deranged sadistic fathers, who kill people for their own amusement and who hate them and don't care about them
● When fathers are gone, each of the Michaels were literally watching over the damn place that his father created - fnaf Michael as a security guard, spn Michael as the Viceroy of Heaven
● Their goal was to find their father. And they both succeeded. And they both died because of it.
• some crazy shit that i came up with, but fnaf Michael was once implied to be the Crying Child. in Orthodoxy, arcangel Michaels is actually responsible for the rain - and it's made out of his tears. Every time he cries, it rains.
• Also this. Animatronics thought fnaf Michael was William. Angels also thought it was Chuck who gave the orders, but in reality? Michael was in charge at that time
Tumblr media
• and this. It's just funny

On 13th August 1907 Scottish architect, Sir Basil Spence, was born.
Spence was born in Bombay, India, his education began at the John Connon School, operated by the Bombay Scottish Education Society, he was then sent back to Scotland to attend George Watson's College in Edinburgh from 1919–1925. He enrolled at Edinburgh College of Art in 1925, studying architecture.
In 1929–1930 Spence spent a year as an assistant, along with William Kininmonth, in the London office of Sir Edwin Lutyens, whose work was to have a profound influence on his style, where he worked on designs for the Viceroy's House in New Delhi, India.
While in London he attended evening classes at the Bartlett School of Architecture under A. E. Richardson. Returning to Edinburgh College of Art in 1930 for his final year of studies, he was appointed a junior lecturer, despite the fact that he was still a student. He continued to teach there until 1939.
Basil Spence is arguably the most internationally renowned 20th-century architects, known principally for his breath-taking work rebuilding Coventry Cathedral. Spence was an eclectic architect whose work ranged from vernacular-styled fisherman’s dwellings in Dunbar to opulent traditional country houses to ultra-modern pieces like the Edinburgh University library. He has been compared to Robert Adam by some for his detailed attention to interiors. Some of his work might have been criticized but my favourite of his in Edinburgh has stood the test of time as other buildings of the 60’s and 70’s have been pulled down. The Scottish Widows Building at Dalkeith Roads on the south side of Edinburgh is in my opinion beautiful, it’s hexagonal bronze-tinted glassy exterior with the water reflecting the sun onto it at times and of course the backdrop of Arthur’s seat helps. The views out to Arthur’s seat and Edinburgh on the upper floors must be a joy for those that work there.
Although known for his modern work, which isn’t to everyone's liking some of his designs are more classical, like Glenwood at Glenlockhart Road, Edinburgh as seen in pic three, and Murrayfield Golf Clubhouse in the next photo. The other photos are of the man himself and Coventry Cathedral.
Pics are of Bsil Spence, Morton Hall Crematorium, New Zealands Government Building, "The Beehive". Sussex University Meeting Room and Coventry Cathedral.

Natural history as the basis for trade and commercial agriculture mediated the link between overseas expansion and the development of European scientific thought. By virtue of its strategic location in the moist tropics, Peninsular Malaysia made a significant contribution to natural history and, thus, to colonial science. [...] Botanical and zoological collections from insular Southeast Asia were of seminal importance, for example, to the pioneer studies of Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace. [...]
The search for economic produce was actively promoted by both the English and Dutch East India Companies [...]. Modern European plant science had its roots in [...] the creation of physick and, later, botanic gardens, established [...] in Pisa, Padua, Florence, [...] Leiden, Oxford, Cambridge, [...] and Edinburgh. Among other functions, these gardens served, as institutions for training physicians for service in the colonies. The lead role they played in discovering and inventorying plants [...] forged a crucial link between botanic gardens and the quest for products, territory and empire.
Garcia D’Orta (c. 1501/2-68), a Spanish physician who served several viceroys in Goa, established the botanic garden near Bombay [...]. His Aromatum Historia (1563) [...] has been described as ‘a landmark in the history of civilization’. [...]
Hendrik van Rheede’s ground-breaking 12-volume Hortus Malabaricus (1678-1703) [was] based on [...] Ayurvadic knowledge and the services of Ezhava collectors and tree climbers in the Malabar. [...]
---
[T]he connection [Linnaeus] established between natural history and national wealth was widely influential. It struck a cord with Adam Smith (1723-90) and other political economists [...] who placed their faith in agricultural improvement [...]. These developments put a premium on naturalists and [...] Sir Comte de Buffon [...] and Joseph Banks [...] served as agricultural and medical consultants to sovereigns. [...] [T]he concept of environmental determinism informed Adam Smith’s philosophy of the superiority of Western nations, endowed with temperate climes, over the people of the tropics. [...] The person who brokered the link between desire for material wealth and the search for its location and procurement overseas was the indomitable and widely influential [Joseph] Banks, President of the Royal Society (1778-1820) and, from 1773, de facto director of the Royal Botanical Gardens. Also a member of the Privy Council Committee for trade – the organization most directly concerned with augmenting wealth and self-sufficiency -- he used his influence with the Royal Institution and the Board of Agriculture to forge a successful link between science and empire. [...]
Carolus Clusius who held the Chair of Botany in Leiden (1592-9) reputedly obtained ‘Malaysian’ specimens from Sir Francis Drake.
Again, following the death in 1695 of the VOC [Dutch East India Company] botanist, Paulus Hermann, his notes and manuscript [...] were acquired and used by William Sherard (Sherwood), founder of the Chair of Botany in Oxford.
---
In 1778, the English East India Company (EIC) appointed J.G. Koenig, a pupil of Linnaeus, as ‘Professor of Botany and Natural History’ in Madras. [...]
His appointment, believed to have been initiated by Banks, firmly established colonial science within the purview of imperial economic policy. [...]
Koenig worked in the private gardens [...] in Melaka and conducted the earliest and largest botanical survey of the west coast of the Peninsula (1778-9). Bengkulen (Bangkulu), [...] where pepper cultivation was extensively researched, was declared a Presidency [...] with the express aim of developing its full economic potential. To help fulfill this objective, Philip and Charles Miller, sons of the well-respected gardener at the Chelsea Physick Garden, were engaged as botanists [...] Charles Miller was entrusted in ‘the greatest secrecy’ with the experimental planting of nutmeg and cloves, using seedlings that visiting Bugis traders were encouraged to smuggle from Maluku. [...] [T]he EIC envisaged expanding the range of Benkulen’s exports by the introduction of tea, ginger, turmeric and mulberries. [...] These efforts prefigured experiments in spice cultivation at the Calcutta Botanic Gardens [...].
Newbold took his knowledge of the tropical environment in the [Malayan] Straits Settlements to Madras, where he earned a reputation as a naturalist and an Orientalist [...]. His lecture to the Bengal Asiatic Society in 1846 [...] was hugely influential and put the Peninsula at the heart of the emerging discourse on tropical ecology. [...] [T]hose [tropical botanic gardens] established by the EIC in Penang (1794) and Singapore (1822) were integral to its commercial aims for extending the chain of ‘tropical Edens’. As centres for the [...] assemblage of exotic crops [...], botanic gardens were perceived as symbols of scientific progress and imperial might.
