😂 I know, this is purely for me and the maybe one other person in the world who might read it. Gotta find joy in life right? Writing random characters gives me joy atm. Pitch Black adjacent stuff doesn’t happen til chapter 2. This is planned to be 3 chapters.

BEFORE
This planet doesn't offer much; it was a shit hole, like most places. Anyone still going got used to this kind of thing, few had the luxury of stepping foot on a nice planet. One needs rich friends and important high-level connections for that kind of thing, or they're born into it.
When you make your living catching escapees, you make enemies, not friends, especially not friends in high places even if they’re the ones who hired you in the first place. Sure, they'll be appreciative, especially if you caught some asshole they’ve been tracking for years. But what you won’t get is an invitation to dinner or private island trips.
This place was just a pit stop before heading to Central and getting her newest job. Until then, Kiara didn’t plan on doing much. She got a decent room in a better part of town, north of the red-light district and east of the canal where all sorts of shady shit went down. She would hold up in the sweet spot, far away from all the drama yet close to the transit terminal.
She would sleep, take a long soaking bath maybe - do all the things she couldn't while on mission. Maybe if the right kind of person comes along, she'd get laid too, it has been a while. Lots of people hooked up on the mission, the men, women, and everyone in between. It happened often whether it was in the dark or behind closed doors yet barely hidden.
The job was dangerous enough, no need to add a mess of human emotions into the whole thing. Most of the men Kiara was posted with were pieces of shit, so it made it easy to adhere to this rule. Then, there were the few times she’d considered, but would never follow through with it. Besides, she liked to focus just on the task at hand and take care of her personal needs once the job was done, even if it meant waiting for a while.
.
Reaching her two-drink limit for the night, Kiara kicked back in the booth with her legs extended across the open seat, so no one got any ideas. If anyone was going to keep company with her, she’d extend the invite herself.
There was one-sided interest coming from a few onlookers, but no one caught her eye until a new guy walked through the doors and headed to the bar. There was a serious look on his face, and he carried himself like a marine officer, even with his plain clothes on.
Once at the bar, he scanned the room, his blue eyes cold and observant - then his eyes met hers. He seemed clean cut, with no facial hair, the hair on his head was dark blonde and a slight reddish undertone and cut short. There was something intense and broody about him, but it didn’t take away from his handsomeness.
His blue eyes stayed fixed on her until the bartender came to him. He turned slightly, his back to Kiara as he made his order. She took another sip, this time eyeing up his form and the way the long-sleeved black top fit perfectly, highlighting how fit he was - but not overly so. There were no bulging muscles or mass- she wasn’t into that kind of thing anyway.
The blue-eyed man turned in his seat, looking back at her again, this time with a beer in his hand. Kiara sat up from her slouching position and slowly lifted one leg off the seat, then the other.
A slight grin ticked on his lips. He stood and made his way over to her, not in a rush, nor a hurry. As he reached the table, Kiara relaxed against the padding and took him in.
He slid into the booth, and leaned back as his eyes raked over her,
“Johns.” he said when they made eye contact again.
“Mora.” she raised her glass, eyes still locked on his as he clicked his beer to it.
Not breaking eye contact, they both brought their drinks to their lips.

Same planet, same bar, same room and Johns was nowhere to be found.
This is the second time in 5 months Kiara couldn’t get a hold of him. Their last scheduled meeting was four months ago, he never showed. Taking a chance, she sent him another invite this month with the same results. Missing each other and rescheduling wasn't a rare thing, it happened sometimes. Still, whether delayed by an hour or days, they both showed up, except for now.
Johns missing their date a second time in a row stirred an odd mix of emotions in Kiara. Purely sexual bonds were simple, to the point, and never left her with lingering feelings; once they were over, they were over. Not with Johns, and this left her feeling both frustrated and confused, she couldn't understand why his disappearance bothered her so much.
How long should I wait? A day? An hour? Two days?
If the broody dark stranger who got his claws in her walked through that door right now, she's not sure what she would do first; kiss him or yell at him?
Everything has an expiration date; she knew that, and she was taught it over and over again growing up.
(Don't get attached to things, it's a waste of time and energy. Especially not men.)
She could hear her mother's voice in her head, deep rooted, spiney vines pierced into her bones.
Maybe this was for the best.
If she let herself admit it, she was getting attached to Johns, in her own way. Going cold turkey could be a good thing.
As she waited in their room alone, she could feel that energetic cord between them; this invisible thread that bound them and with each encounter it grew thicker and heavier; it plunged deep into their bodies, to the roots of their feet and the ground they walked on. Their souls and bodies are tethered, without reason or explanation and she wonders, if he feels this too.
Wherever the man is, she can sense he's alive, but that's all she knows. Part of her was upset, could he have tired of her? Another part didn't care, it says move on. Another part of her only grew more curious about the man she's shared a bed with for this long.
Who was Johns?
He could be a terrible person with little to no redeemable or human qualities. He could be the kind of man Kiara was often paid to hunt down and take out, or, he could just be a broken man, a broken man consumed by his own darkness and sadness which coats his aura and bones like ink. Or a mix of them all.
Still, something about him struggles to break through the darkness; a weak part of his former self holding on for dear life, and this part is what stood out to her the most, this is the part of him she feels the most empathy and curiosity about. His physical attractiveness aside, she felt this deep, muted desperation in him the very first time they met and something in her wanted to reach in and grab it, to dissect and analyze it; to hold it close.
Where did Johns come from? Did he have family? If so, he still seemed like a man alone in the world.

In the sky above, the bioraptors grew more agitated; their rasps deepening as they screeched and snipped at each other. Some flying in a hunger fueled craze, bodies colliding into one another.
As terrified the group was, they were doing good, considering. None of them have ever been in this situation before. Enhanced human or not, hybrid or not, this was still jarring for Kiara too. Even with her advantages, and their dislike for her blood, it's still enough to make the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end.
She’s also never used her skills in a situation like this. On a hunt, on the job, when under the threat of shady asshole who thinks a woman alone is an easy target, sure. But stranded on a planet and insanely outnumbered? This is all terrifyingly new.
If they’re stuck here long enough, would the creatures try to attack her anyway, out of desperation? How long will her advantage remain so? When would it no longer matter? Kiara knew she could protect herself, but was it enough to help keep the group alive?
The knot growing in her stomach didn’t help her rising anxiety any, but this wasn’t because the creatures above, this was about the two men up ahead, Riddick leading a few paces before Johns. There was a static energetic cord cast between them, like a tight muscle begging for release; pulsing and inflamed, agitated and spikey. It tasted like bitter spice on her tongue and burned in the back of her throat.
Tiredness crept up her body. The lack of sleep almost slowing her down. Kiara pushed through it, keeping her set pace. Dancing on the edge of overstimulation, she continued to rely on her senses to stay alert; actively reading sound, body temperature, proximity.
After taking one more glance at the sky, her eyes moved to Riddick. He was still leading, Johns behind him. Riddick was focused, alert and at the same time he smelled bitter, same as Johns, minus the fear and anxiety. That cord between them thickened by the second. Kiara knew in her gut the tension between them was coming to a head sooner than later.
If only there was a way to stop Johns from digging his own grave, she thought.

The rain continued to fall, turning into a downpour by the time Kiara reached the ground. Above, the creatures fill the night sky with their high-pitched squeals. Random body parts littered the ground: in their growing agitation, they started to attack each other.
The settlement was just ahead now. Kiara could see the lights and Riddick's massive figure moving about the ship. Though he kept moving, she knew he could sense her. Kiara didn’t know what she’d say to Riddick, once they were face to face. Words weren’t going very far today, it seemed more like a waste of energy. A threat might make things worse or push him to actually leave. At the same time, what if aggression was the only way to get through to him now?
The only respite in all of this was the heavy rain, it was a relief on her skin. One of the ways Nagahs recover is in water. Going for a swim or submerging themselves not only cools off their skin but also helps regulate their temperature and lifts their mood. The exhaustion set deep in her bones wouldn’t go anywhere until she could rest, but this helped.
.
Kiara was drenched by the time she reached the Skiff. It was ready for take-off, Riddick seconds away from closing the hatch.
“Hoping for the best keeps biting me in the ass today. First Johns, now you.”
Riddick, aware of her presence already, took his time turning around to face her, his goggles concealing his eyes. “What did you expect?”
“Better!” she yelled. “From both of you.”
Riddick watched as she charged up the walkway to confront him.
“How can you leave with them back there?”
“Easy. Watch,” Riddick replied coldly, then hit the button, the hatch closing behind them.

The group rushed back in the jeep, the distance between locations seeming shorter due to their hurried pace.
Back at the Hunter Graznier, they gathered supplies, torches, and the cells in a mad dash. Riddick shouldered two at a time, Kiara had one, and Johns the other. Shazza worked on the sand cat with Jack's help, and everyone was busy getting things done.
The early signs of an eclipse gave them no indication of just how much time they had left; an hour, two, three?
The early signs were subtle, set far back on the horizon as the planetary rings rose closer to the sun, it was like a yellow light flashing before it went red.
Though the sky didn’t show any drastic color changes yet the eclipse was coming. The temperature continued to drop one degree at a time. The planet was even closer to the sun than the last time she looked, its ring almost blocking the rays.
“We’re in trouble -“Kiara whispered as she dropped off the cell.
“The suns still out, we have time,” Johns commented, catching his breath.
“Not for long,” Kiara replied.
The temperature dropped two degrees, a breeze right behind it. Kiara stilled, which Riddick noticed, and so did Jack. The kid stopped polishing the dome, and she caught a glimpse of Kiara’s eyes. Jack decided to mimic Riddick about an hour ago and was now spotting a bald head and goggles.
Kiara stepped closer to the sand cat, addressing everyone at once, “We need to find another means of transport. We can’t use this.”
Shazza looked at her puzzled, the wind kicked up, blowing her dark curls in her face. She too stopped when she saw Kiara's eyes. Kiara felt them staring but her focus was on the sky.
Bright orange and red gave way to deep amber; sand-colored skies with dark tones riding behind them. Like a fading image, the sky got darker and darker; the suns soon to be devoured by shadow giving way to night.
Kiara felt her skin tingle and everything inside of her was yelling to retreat, danger was approaching.
“I’ll explain my eyes later, we need to get back to the ship.”
Shock, panic, and fear spiced the air. To her left, Riddick stared ahead at the landscape, almost in a hypnotic state. Jack hopped off the sand cat, and Kiara moved the girl behind her.
The moment Jack got closer it confirmed something Kiara was smelling; menstrual blood. She wasn’t sure if it was Shazza or Carolyn at first.
This would be a problem; it would make Jack a magnet to the creatures. And when Kiara made eye contact across the way with Riddick, she knew, not only did they both know Jack's secret, but he could smell the blood too.
Kiara glanced back at Jack, “Stay close. If not to me, to the others at all times.”
Jack nodded then stared frightfully at the sky.
The underground chittering grew louder, the wind howled; flapping wings, cawing sounds and the earth shifting. If felt like any minute the earth would tear open and swallow them up as the creatures pick at their bones.
Their raspy cries reached a pitch now heard by the humans. For the first time all day, a nice breeze kicked up, cooling their hot skin as fear and tension continued to rise.
The breeze and disappearing halo could have been beautiful if it weren’t for the dangers lurking in the dark, seconds away from breaking loose. A minute if they’re lucky.
