i know we all love michael afton, and like i get it, i love him too, but sometimes it really feels like the fnaf fandom cares sooo much about sadboy michael being the saddest boy of all time that they pretend other characters had better lives just so michael seems sadder by comparison

objectively i think elizabeth and the crying child get the worst of this, but especially elizabeth. theres this persistent idea that elizabeth was williams favorite and beautiful angel and he loved and doted on her so much while poor poor mike got nothing. so often i see the dynamic put forward that william was physically abusive but only towards michael. which is ridiculous for a lot of reasons, but especially because we only see william get physical with any of his kids once, and its when he hits elizabeth in the silver eyes.

obviously, the silver eyes is a different continuity. whatever. its still canon, so the things it tells us about the general world and characters still applies. and it outright shows william as an abusive and neglectful father to His Daughter. and EVEN if you want to completely disregard the books, william obviously didnt “love” elizabeth enough in the games to not want to electrocute and experiment on her when he 100% knew she was possessing circus baby. elizabeth was a means to an end to him the same way michael was. he didnt even love her enough to properly keep an eye on her even though he knew she wanted to see a robot that would kill her. if william cared about elizabeth half as much as people pretend he does she would still be alive, because he wouldve put half a mind towards keeping her safe

+ cc is in a similar boat. william had a million chances to be a decent father and try to step in between cc and michael before things went too far. the bite happened at ccs birthday party, literally all william had to do was show up to his own sons birthday and he could have stepped in but he didnt. like, we all know william was using the fredbear plush to keep an eye on cc, so theres no doubt he knew the kid was being bullied. and not only does he do nothing about it, he also 1) actively feeds into ccs fears about the animatronics 2) still makes him go to the establishment housing the animatronics hes terrified of

and the way william talks about them. “you are broken” “i will put you back together” like william views his kids as objects. broken things he can fix. these are not words said by a loving parent

and its not even just the aftons! henry is no where near as horrible as william is—i Am Not suggesting henry was abusive—but he also wasnt a great dad! building a robot to watch your daughter instead of watching your daughter yourself does not make you a good parent! henry loves charlotte, but the emilys were not some perfect family with no issues.

obviouslyyy michael suffered a ton and was a victim no one is saying he wasnt but i promiseee that does not have to come at the cost of pretending no one else was a victim too. things are just as if not more interesting if you acknowlede other characters guys i promise i promise

Just small informations I came up with:

While Michael was favoured by his mother, she sees him just as her property, much like the others.

William on the other hand is indifferent about Michael. He cares enough for him to keep him alive, but doesn't love him as a father should.

He has small amounts of affection for Elizabeth and Evan.

Michael genuinely wants to make his parents proud, joining his father's murders as his accomplice.

When Mike became William's accomplice it was after Evan's death. It was a form of punishment for what he did to his younger brother, and because Michael was given pretty much the cold shoulder, be complied.

Because he was seeking every ounce of affection his parents could have- but it would be never enough.

So he continues. Digging deeper the hole of despair only to make his parents proud and that they would love him.

Conflicting dynamics between Michael and his siblings are so intriguing. I feel like a lot of people slant strongly one way or the other– he's either protrayed as a good brother who's been thrust into a parental role and does everything for his siblings, or as a complete monster of a kid who spends all of his spare time tormenting his little brother– but it's more interesting to me when it's both.

The Michael who cruelly locks his brother in a room surrounded by the things he fears most and the Michael who tries to redirect his father's abuse away from Evan and towards himself are the same person.

The Michael who did his sister's hair every morning is the same Michael who tore apart her toys when he was angry with her, and both parts of him were there when he found himself crying in her room at the realization she was never coming home.

On top of that, they probably had a lot of very normal moments, too. They played outside together in the summer and tried to pawn their chores off on each other. There was one song they all liked when it came on the radio, and they made fun of the adults they knew when nobody else was around. None of them knew how to talk about their feelings, but, when one of them had been having a really rough time, they'd find that the breakfast Mikey made the next morning was their favorite, or Evan's favorite show had been put on even when Elizabeth had the remote, or an anonymous party had left a really cool rock on Michael's bedside table.

It must have been strange from the younger kids' perspectives, especially Evan's. Your brother keeps making you cry on purpose, and he's so, so mean, for no reason at all, but you know the bruise under his eye had been meant for you.

he literally emotionally abused elizabeth. i saw a post on tumblr saying that she was a spoiled kid as a form of manipulation from william, and its been stuck in my head for a while now. and also, in pizza sim, she literally "wants to make him proud". she'd do literally anything to make her father proud of her, maybe even doing something morally grey. like uhhmm yikes!

as for michael, i think he's incredibly, oh SO incredibly, selfless because of william's treatment of him. especially after his siblings's deaths, and maybe especially after evan's. and also the fact that he is heavily fixated on trying Not To Be Like His Dad is a double yikes!!!

i mean. cmon. nightmare gas? as much as i dont like that theory (in fact i despise it), william literally had 3 separate monitors that was meant for supervising evan/cc during his night terrors. and also, he was talking to evan THROUGH THE BEAR, and i am a firm believer that evan thought fredbear was his only friend at the time (at least pre-bite of 83). and it just gets me thinking- did william even deny evan's claims of his nightmares or fredbear talking to him? if he did it certainly didn't help. especially if he's the one doing it- he would be gaslighting him. yikes part 3!
