Is Arthur a character in TKN, and if he is, what kind of role does he play? I know Uther is the Villain King of the story, and I was curious on how you planned to portray Arthur, if at all? 👀

For reference, this is Uther’s appearance in TKN!

He may look cool, but trust me, he’s not a good person at all.

He’s charming (superficially), lacking empathy and a sense of guilt, a pathological liar, inclined to psychologically manipulate, bold, impulsive, narcissistic, arrogant, inclined to violence…

The list goes on, and it’s because he’s a psychopath. The word is overused and misused, but I mean it in the (current) true definition. It can be caused by “genetic and environmental issues, such as neglect or abuse by parental figures”, from Wikipedia’s article covering it.

A few risk factors are also “family history, parental neglect, abuse, or psychological manipulation of the affected child”. And depending on how I characterize his father, Constantine (The Third possibly, but idk lol), he could’ve been a sweetheart who was abused into becoming a monster, or he was the monster all along.

Either way, he destroys everyone around him, intentionally or not. He harbors secret hate towards Merlin and Charlie, because neither of them are like him at all, besides both being blatantly magic.

Realizing there’s so much I haven’t thought about…

Back in Daylight’s Redemption: Emerald Embers, Merlin had been living at Camelot for 100 years when the story started (separated from Charlie at that point; I’ll say more about that in a different post). The order of the kings I had was Vortigern, Constantine, Uther, and Arthur. Vortigern is the only one who isn’t explicitly related to them, but he was who I was going with.

The order of the kings still makes sense to me? But I don’t know how long Merlin and Charlie would’ve been living at Camelot before “present day”. T_T

Anyways, Uther is a sun coded character, like Merlin is subtly moon coded with his earrings!

Camelot has the sun as its insignia, making Merlin’s moon motifs seem like he’s rebelling against the royals’ authority. (He is. Secretly.)

Merlin actually had moon motifs back in Daylight's Redemption, to match Morgana! But when I started The King of the Nameless, I wasn't sure who the brutal sun character would be for a while, since at the "beginning" of the story, Morgana isn't even alive yet. And of course, she isn't the Morgana from Tales of Arcadia. (I'll talk more about her later.) Ignore the tag for Morgana lol; that's for ToA's version, not mine.

Finaly had a stroke of genius and decided it would be Uther! That was before he'd been designed lol, so now that he was going to have that coding, I wanted to finally give him one.

It was... difficult. He was being a bitch to design along with just. being a bitch in general. Forgot he was supposed to be 25, so I kept making dudes in their 40s in the game Dragon's Dogma, and I also couldn't decide if I wanted him to be handsome or ugly. To past me, “the first option would show that evil people can be handsome too, but I don't still don’t want people simping for him. The second option might make it unintentionally seem like 'Oh of course he’s evil! He’s ugly!’”

Made a poll asking if I should make him handsome or ugly, and handsome won! After that, I think I finally gave up and commissioned Merlin's first artist, using some references at the bottom of the post.

That's how his design finally came to be!

Then after that, his backstory that I really need to update at some point went through multiple revisions.

Idea 1: Listened to “Monster” from Epic the Musical and thought of him not always being evil until his father died; (magically related, presumably) he saw his brother, Aurelius, who was the older brother and king at this point in time, struggling under the weight of the crown and blamed it on magic doing this. Then as he grew up with Merlin as one his mentors, he realized that Merlin was insane (read: mentally ill) and felt like he was losing him, and presumed his magic did it to him.

His brother died, and his feelings towards magic taking everything from him only increased. Logical solution is, of course, eradicating magic completely so no one else would get hurt because of it (and starting with murdering Merlin). I had no idea how that would fit in with Igraine.

I didn't want to retcon Uther’s character, but I also thought a kind character becoming a monster was peak. I had no idea who a different character could be though.

Idea 2: Constantine sucked ass and Merlin basically raised Uther, but the latter's biological father still managed to get into Uther’s head that Merlin was crazy. That cued the complicated feelings of not wanting the one who raised him to die, while also thinking he needed to be put out of his misery so he wouldn't suffer anymore, and the misguided offspring betrayal. Seemed like a tragic villain at this point, and once again couldn't figure out how to make Igraine fit. He also started planning the magical genocide behind Merlin’s back because he knew that Merlin would never agree, and his reasoning was that magic took his father and brother, and he wouldn’t let that happen to anyone else.

Idea 3: Make Aurelius the asshole brother to fit the previous two ideas. Or Uther was still an asshole and he was dead. Or he faked his death or something.

@danhengsbestie and I got mixed up while talking about the third idea, and she thought I meant make Uther good and Aurelius evil, but I meant keep Uther evil and Aurelius good. She liked his design and though he could be a good guy, and that I could give him a more heroic treatment. I disagreed because if you know what he did to Igraine (and Gorlois afterwards) in the Legends, then you know.

Made another poll. Uther won, so that's what I kept.

If anyone wants to hear more about Uther, and Igraine, Gorlois, and that whole situation, send me an ask? 👀 There's some dark things there so I'd put it in a separate post so people can avoid it if they need to. Also this is getting a bit long even without their designs and things...

Ending Uther's bit with this: something funny about Charlie’s personality changing is that at one point Uther hated him for “being like him (and he doesn’t realize it)” but now their personalities are vastly different lol.

Compared to Uther’s above traits, Charlie’s serious, brave, protective (of Merlin), compassionate (towards Merlin), as well as fierce but loving and loyal, who sometimes takes a little bit longer to care about people than Merlin due to personality differences. He'll readily state his opinions and start arguments without caring, as well as having no qualms about staring people down while gauging their personality and threat level. Was at first completely normal but is now Fucked Up too.

Arthur:

I... have no official design for this dude yet. But like in many of the Legends, he's the son of Uther and Igraine! He's also the older sister of Morgana.

I also made a couple of Picrews for him, but now when I look at them I'm like: "Why are you white."

Because this is the color swatch I picked directly from Morgana's skin, and while her original artist said she could be any race or gender I wanted since she was designed to be ambigious, I went with her being Greek after @honeyxmonkey suggested it!

Decided to attempt another design for him while making this post, and I'm not set on it, but for now this is him lol.

I think he looks like Krel from Tales of Arcadia. 💀

Some of this is a combination of Daylight’s Redemption and TKN content.

DR, January: I was thinking about Arthur struggling with trusting his magic his whole life because of Uther’s upbringing, in spite of Merlin and Morgana proving that magic can be good instead of doing an abrupt 180 as soon as Guinevere dies. Because most fics either have him hating magic the whole fic regardless of logical timelines, or have the 180, but I was thinking the struggle would be interesting because it contrasted Gwen, who’s loved magic her whole life and he loves her, Merlin, and Morgana enough to keep trying to fight his father’s opinions drilled into.

Then it’s all thrown down the drain when Bellroc stabs him and the Order makes him the Green Knight.

And Gwen dying also pushed him over the edge of after all his trying and launching the genocide out of grief despite Merlin and Morgana’s pleas.

TKN, January: Despite me starting to change the newly titled writing into a book, Guinevere was still dead due to magical means, and Arthur still started the genocide out of grief.

February: I realized Merlin being more open with his emotions meant he actually told people about his visions, which made it even more gutwrenching when Merlin told Arthur about his vision of the latter committing the magical genocide, and he was so grief stricken he did it anyways because he felt like Uther was right about everything he taught him despite him being dead for years at this point.

March: He was going to be one of four of Merlin’s adopted kids: him, Guinevere, Morgana, and Mordred. Which is very weird compared to now, where Merlin only has Charlie as his adopted kid lol. I’ll elaborate more on him and Charlie in an ask @gaylightisminetocommand sent!

Arthur was adopted first because Uther was severely lacking as a father figure (to say the least). Guinevere came to Camelot every summer to hopefully become friends with Arthur because the two were betrothed (Swan Princess, anyone?). And they did bond pretty much immediately! Morgana was adopted because at that point, she also lived in Camelot, and Uther was just as amazing with her. Same with Mordred.

Currently: Something that will stay the same from my most recent version is Arthur being nicer than some portrayals, such as Once Upon A Time, where, according to the casting call, is “a good and just ruler who, beneath the surface, is a master manipulator who can carry a grudge to the grave, and maybe beyond. He harbors an eternal burning love for Guinevere that can lean toward being a bit... controlling.”, or Tales of Arcadia, where he enacts a magical genocide after Guinevere dies. (Back then, this was because of Merlin’s influence, but if that stays the same Merlin will be more of a mentor figure than a parental one.)

Also, Mordred is still going to be related to him, but he isn’t his son like the Legends. Especially not through his mother being Morgana (or Morgause depending on the version). They’re both Arthur’s half-sisters, and there won’t be any incest in TKN at all. Mordred also won’t bring around the end of Camelot lol. I think.

Also also, he’s a great older brother to Morgana, and he and Guinevere actually have a wholesome marriage! He never has any lovers besides her, and they rule Camelot as equals.

To apologize for the lack of information, I’m also going to yap about Guinevere and Morgana!

Guinevere:

I actually have more of a set design for her!

I could've SWORN she's usually blonde at first, so I made that design first, but most images I found depict her with brown hair. So now… I can’t decide if I like blonde or brunette better. 😭

Back in January, when I was first coming up with new ideas, I thought of Morgana being a teenager instead of a grown woman like usual, and at this point, she was the child produced by ahem. The if you know thing. Her being so much younger when Uther died and being the result of the Uther thing™️ instead of Arthur caused her a lot of insecurity, but Guinevere didn’t care about the circumstances of her birth because it wasn’t her fault, and basically became an older sister to her. When she died, Morgana was shattered.

Debated on if I was going to keep her dead or not as I went through more revisions, and finally decided not to :] She’s gonna live!!!

Back when Merlin had four kids, I was debating on if he possibly would have three instead, since her just coming every summer might not be enough for him to be a dad to her. At the very least, they’d have been friends.

In her current version, she still loves Morgana, and she’s an older sister figure to her like before. And a line in God Games from Epic: the Musical applies to her: “Never once has he cheated on his wife”. The Lancelot affair destroying the round table doesn’t occur, and we love a loyal queen!

Morgana:

Like Merlin, she’s gone through a few design changes.

This was her first design! And I still think she looks cute :) It’s very different from her current one though lol.

This was way back when I first started TKN! I was thinking of inverting Arthur and Morgana’s usual designs, and making him have black hair, and her have blonde hair.

I’ll go through her ton of backstory changes like Merlin and Charlie first and reveal her design at the end!

As I said, originally, she was Uther’s daughter produced by that, a bastard child because Uther wasn’t married to her mother. He hated her because of it, even though it was the consequences of his own actions.

In the og Arthurian Legends, the result was Arthur, but I forgot which sibling it was, so I had to Google it, and I also wanted Morgana angst. Uther also treated her like shit for having magic; she was eight when it first started.

He only let Merlin train her in magic so she wouldn’t become a monster, but unbeknownst to them, he was secretly sending assassins in attempts to rid himself of her (and he might have done it to Merlin too).

Also I wasn’t very smart lol, because then I couldn’t decide if she or Arthur was going to be Igraine’s child but… in Arthurian Legends they’re both her kids. I thought they were half-siblings through Uther, not her. That’s part of why Morgana was the bastard child first, but then I couldn’t decide which one it was going to be, and apparently. I didn’t have to and I’m just stupid.

Like how I forgot Arthur was the original child by Uther in the Legends. 😭 But in my defense, I may have been thinking of BBC Merlin where they were actually half-siblings through Uther.

After my realization, I was thinking about how Merlin would become Morgana’s surrogate father because of her being Igraine and Gorlois’ daughter, and Uther wouldn’t have any claim to take her to Camelot that way; so maybe they would actually die of old age later on, and then she was taken to Camelot. (Uther was possibly still alive because he was forcing Merlin to keep him immortal. Idk. Or Arthur and Gwen were ruling Camelot by then and he wantsd to take in the half-sister he’s never met.) So anyways, she latched onto Merlin because he was nice just like her parents were, and he was magic just like her, and as much as her parents had loved her, they had never known what it was to be magic in a world that hated you.

But then @danhengsbestie said killing them off was rude lol.

Then I thought that maybe actually she could start coming to Camelot every summer or something so Merlin could teach her magic. And then she has three parents.

When Guinevere dies, she and Arthur were both heartbroken, and her grief got even worse when Arthur launched the genocide against magical beings despite her and Merlin’s pleas.

She couldn’t take being in the castle after Gwen’s funeral, and she goes out to the forest, where my equivalent of the Arcane Order at this point found her.

“Nari” sensed her soul and how much pain she was in, and they decide that her grief and young age makes her a prime target for them.

They easily manipulate her into being their pawn, and the “fight” between Merlin and her was him getting her to stand down after he tells her who they truly are.

But no one else was taking her unintentional betrayal well…

Well, that was wild. It’s gonna get even worse with Merlin and Charlie’s post lollll.

Another idea I had was Morgana getting a prosthetic arm later, like how ToA Morgana got the prosthetic hand.

And a day later, I found an adoptable that I decided was perfect! I was so glad they (designed to be an ambiguous gender as well as race lol) were still available, because I would’ve been crushed. 😭 I couldn’t believe nobody had snagged them.

They didn’t have a name either when I got them lol, but I saw them and I was like “Ohh that’s beautiful!! WAIT THAT WOULD BE A PERFECT MORGANA DESIGN”

I thought it was hilarious that I had the idea for her to have a prosthetic arm and then not even a day later bam. art.

I still have to figure out how she loses her arm and part of her left ear, along with getting the scars on her face.

The one thing that’s stayed consistent about her is being a lesbian! :D Like ToA’s is.

Back when Uther was still her stepfather, I had an idea for him being so despicable that he yelled at Morgana after she lost her arm for being that “careless” when she’d just woken up at Camelot after passing out from the blood loss and being bandaged up. Yeah that definitely won’t happen now.

I wasn’t actually going to make her Greek at first, but when I was making a reference sheet for her, her skin color came out as various shades of brown when I used a color picker tool. Before, I thought she was white because of the lighting. I thought it was my mistake, so I asked her original artist if he had a possible race for her, and he said I could decide.

Like I said, @honeyxmonkey suggested her being Greek after saying she looked vaguely Latina lol, and I ran with it! I also made a few Picrews of her during the figuring out her race part, and you can see how she changed! The third one is actually still a little bit lighter than her color swatch lol.

Oh also, she gets a familiar eventually! :D Her name is Willa!

Since Charlie is one of the biggest animal familiars currently existing, she’ll definitely be smaller than him, but other than that I don’t have a current size for her lol.

Summary: Nimue, daughter of Arthur and Gwen, and Avalon Le Fay, daughter or Merlin and Morgana, had always been thick as thieves, and had always been ready to declare war on Auradon.  Ever since the formation of the Isle, King Adam and the Fairy Godmother had been insisting that Morgana was still a villain, and therefore belonged on the Isle, and once Avalon was born, she agreed–so long as her daughter could stay in Camelot.  When Arthur was killed barely a year later, Merlin and Gwen partnered up to raise their daughters and run a kingdom, until the girls would be old enough to do so themselves.  Of course Auradon never trusted the one kingdom that refused to unite, and insisted that the girls be sent to Auradon prep, and so they went–reluctant as could be.  Everything was fine, mostly–the other princesses looked down on Nimue’s love of swordfighting, and Avalon was never seen as anything but a villain kid, but they still had each other.  They could tolerate it all, biding their time.  But at sixteen years of age, everything they’d ever planned gets thrown for a loop when it’s declared that four children from the Isle would be moving to Auradon.

Summary: If King Adam had known the price of banishing magic from Auradon, he might have reconsidered.  But the former Beast was a stubborn man who refused to heed any warnings, and it had backfired.  He hadn’t known that banishing all magic would rip the last remains of the Enchantress’ curse from his veins, hadn’t known that the magic would redirect itself into the Enchantress, and he certainly hadn’t known that it would lead to the immediate birth of his firstborn child.  But it had.  And while he had no qualms about sending the Enchantress to the Isle, the queen had refused to send her stepdaughter, and so Princess Beatrice had been raised in Auradon alongside her younger brother.  She knew the truth about her birth, and she knew that her father hated her with every fibre of his being, but she didn’t care.  What she did care about was Ben’s decision to bring children from the Isle to Auradon - children that could have been her, had Belle not stepped in - and proving to her father, once and for all, that her generation is something more than just the children of heroes and villains, that they can be their own people and make their own choices.  And maybe the children of the four baddest villains are the perfect people to help her with that plan.

Summary: When a new baby laughs for the first time a new fairy is born.  When Prince Benjamin Florian laughed for the first time, Blossom was born.  From that day forth, the prince and his “fairy godsister” were inseparable. On her first day on the Isle, Finley gets caught stealing a bracelet off of Lady Tremaine.  But rather than tell the woman, the boy introduces himself as Jay, son of Jafar, and offers Finley a partnership.  Their alliance soon grows into a friendship, and Jay introduces Finley to the other VKs, bringing her into their team.  The five of them rule the island with ease, causing trouble wherever they go.  It isn’t perfect, but Finley has learned to move on from Corona, and from Auradon.  So of course, that’s when Prince Ben makes his first royal proclamation; bringing children of the Isle to Auradon.  The daughter of Maleficent, the son of Jafar, the daughter of the Evil Queen, and the son of Cruella De Vil.  And the princess of Corona.

Summary: Harley Hook was a pirate, through and through.  Always at her brother’s side, always with Uma and the crew, always near her beloved Gil, Harley Hook was a pirate.  And as a pirate, she absolutely hated Mal’s gang.  They thought that they were so much better than anyone, just because of Mal’s mom - big whoop, it’s not like Maleficent could even use magic on the Isle.  So yeah, Harley hated the VKs, her loyalty was to the crew, and she was never seen away from Harry or Gil.  And then the princeling decides to bring children of some of the worst villains to Auradon: Mal, Evie, Jay, Carlos.  And Harley.  Harley couldn’t be more furious at being taken away from her crew, or at being sent to Auradon, or at being forced to work with the VKs to get Fairy Godmother’s wand.  But she knows that if she wants to get back to the Isle, back to her family, she needs that barrier down as much as they do.  She’s just not sure that they can cooperate long enough for that.

Summary: Princess Harmony was a youngest child’s youngest child, she knew that she would never be anything special.  Her mom was Ariel, and her sister Melody had united their parents’ kingdoms.  Harmony was nothing in comparison.  So Harmony went on her own adventures, swimming as far as she could and discovering the wonders of the world outside of Atlantis.  She’d heard of the Isle of the Lost of course, everyone had, but she never planned on finding it.  She never planned on swimming through the barrier, or on finding out that she would no longer be able to turn into a mermaid when she did, or on never being able to swim back across.  And so, Harmony grew up on the Isle along with the children of the villains.  She befriended pirates and princesses and everything in between, and she almost forgot about life in Atlantis.  And then the future king summons four of the children of the Isle to Auradon, and Harmony knows that she has to seize her only chance at returning to her home, even if it means leaving behind her partner - in crime and in love - Harry Hook.

Probabilmente la parola caffè fu la sua prima parola in assoluto, perché solamente così si spiegava la passione quasi spasmodica di Eleanor per quella bevanda calda e scura. Ormai le vacanze natalizie erano terminate e tornare alla vita di tutti i giorni non era sempre facile. Avrebbe dovuto mettersi in pari con lo studio e chissà, magari trovare anche uno studio disposto a prenderla come tirocinante, ma per questo vi era ancora parecchio tempo, e piani anche da organizzare. Il lunedì mattina si trasformò in una camminata lenta in direzione del suo locale preferito, arrivò al Raven's Cafè in tarda mattina ed ordinò il suo latte macchiato. Ci impiegò non più di qualche minuto a intravedere un tavolino libero, verso cui si diresse velocemente sperando che nessuno glielo fregasse. Era perfetto. Situato vicino alla finestra, da quella posizione si aveva la possibilità di osservare tutti i cittadini di Ravenfire correre e vivere le loro vite, osservarli affannarsi ad arrivare in orario in ufficio, o anche solo le signore di una certa età che dovevano aggiornarsi sui gossip cittadini. Eleanor adorava prendersi il suo tempo, godersi anche quelle piccole cose, come prendere un caffè e leggersi un buon libro, ma solo quando vide una persona avvicinarsi a passo spedito, ella si ritrovò ad alzare un sopracciglio.

Quella mattina Willa si era svegliata di buon umore. Aveva come il presentimento che quella giornata sarebbe stata diversa dal normale, e non di certo in modo negativo. Quando era protagonista di situazioni spiacevoli, le quali /fino ad ora/ non erano di certo mancate nella sua vita, la giovane sentiva sempre qualcosa che non andava, come se il suo sesto senso la volesse avvertire in qualche modo, come se la volesse mettere in guardia. Quel giorno era tutto il contrario: si sentiva tranquilla, forse anche fin troppo. I raggi di sole che si riflettevano sulle finestre della sua camera la rendevano ancora più felice, come se il suo umore dipendesse dal tempo, e forse qualche volta era proprio così. Sperava tanto che quella splendida giornata non sarebbe andata a finire male. Dopo aver fatto una doccia veloce, essersi vestita ed aver messo un filo di trucco, decise di andare a fare colazione al Raven's Cafè. Era una cliente abituale, spesso ci andava per prendere un cappuccino o un the caldo, accompagnati da una piccola brioche, prima di andare a fare lezione di danza, o anche semplicemente per leggere. Era un posto alternativo alla biblioteca, anche se quest'ultimo non si poteva battere per il silenzio. [...] Una volta raggiunta la sua meta ordinò una cosa diversa, caffè macchiato. Non che non le piacesse, ma preferiva evitare quella bevanda, anche se allo stesso tempo pensava che una volta ogni tanto non le avrebbe fatto così male. Guardandosi attorno, intravide subito un posto accanto alla finestra, perfetto per lei. Adorava i posti all'angoletto, davanti alle vetrate. Si sentiva più libera: poteva vedere i bambini che giocavano, le persone che correvano da una parte all'altra per non far tardi al lavoro, persino gli anziani che si sedevano su una panchina a leggere i gossip o il giornale in sé. Tutto ciò facevano sorridere la veggente. Le faceva capire che quella cittadina era viva. Purtroppo però, nel mentre si stava dirigendo con passo svelto verso il tavolino, si accorse che era stato già occupato da una ragazza. 《Oh, uhm...no tranquilla. Non mi metto a far scenate per questa cosa.》 Rispose educatamente, nonostante la sua interlocutrice risultasse poco garbata. Willa, in cambio, non ci diede molto peso. 《Se per te non ci sono problemi...potrei sedermi qui? Altrimenti non fa niente, davvero, ce ne sono tanti altri.》 Abbozza un lieve sorriso, facendo spallucce. A lei non importava davvero il posto in sé, avrebbe scelto qualsiasi altro tavolo se la sconosciuta non avesse gradito la sua presenza.

Eleanor Dahlia H. Janssen

La mattina era da sempre segnata dalla sua solita routine, passo dopo passo, e il fatto che qualcosa potesse non andare come ella aveva previsto, non era nemmeno da tenere in considerazione. L'espressione apparentemente scocciata sul volto della Janssen, e quell'atteggiamento che avrebbe fatto scappare la pazienza ad un santo, emergevano fin dalla prima occhiata. Continuò ad osservare la giovane che le si era posizionata poco distante, la squadrò con il suo solito modo di fare, appuntandosi mentalmente tutti gli errori in fatto di stile che aveva compiuto la sconosciuta e solo dopo un attento esame, Eleanor tornò con lo sguardo sul suo viso. Inclinò appena il capo, come se la stesse studiando, ed ammirandola per il coraggio di rivolgerle la parola. Un ghigno divertito aleggia sulle di lei labbra, per quella mattina la sua lettura poteva aspettare. Ci impiegò, tuttavia, qualche istante prima di risponderle, come se volesse tenerla sulle spine, ma dopo qualche momento non riuscì a trattenersi. « Mh.. Perché no, accomodati. » Rispose la Janssen rinvigorita da un'adrenalina che non sapeva nemmeno da dove provenisse. Avrebbe potuto dare una delle sue risposte acide e taglienti, ma per una volta, si limitò ad acconsentire a quella richiesta. Inoltre, per essersi proposta la giovane in piedi vicino a lei doveva avere coraggio. Ella continuò ad osservarla, la sua schiena dritta, i capelli castani, e quello sguardo che nascondeva qualcosa di più. « Mi chiamo Eleanor Janssen. »

Willa Blainers

L'espressione della ragazza davanti a sé risultava abbastanza insistente: la stava squadrando da capo a piedi /fin troppo lentamente/come se stesse studiando ogni minimo particolare che apparteneva alla giovane, per capire con che tipo di carattere avrebbe dovuto avere a che fare quella mattina. A Willa pareva infastidita dalla sua proposta, eppure lei stessa le aveva detto che avrebbe potuto scegliere anche un altro tavolo, in caso non avesse accettato. Tutto ciò poteva essere solo che una sua supposizione, ma il silenzio calato subito dopo, ed il lieve ghigno che le rivolse senza proferire parola, la mise quasi in imbarazzo, tanto da farle abbassare il viso e mordersi il labbro inferiore. Emise un sospiro di sollievo quando /finalmente/ la sconosciuta pronunciò quelle parole, permettendole quindi di sedersi al suo stesso tavolo. Posò il caffè su di esso, le sorrise leggermente, e infine si accomodò. 《Willa Blainers, piacere.》

Lo sguardo della Janssen si era fatto sempre più insistente e il fatto che la giovane davanti a lei si sentisse chiaramente a disagio, divertiva e non poco la newyorchese. Inclinò di poco il capo come se la stesse studiando, predatore con preda, mentre la giovane appariva sempre più stizzita dal suo continuo esame. Certo era che aveva avuto coraggio a presentarsi così, ma la Janssen era anche il tipo di persona che sapeva apprezzare quelle persone che non demordevano. Il fatto poi che fosse calato volutamente quel silenzio, indispettì e non poco la sua ospite che mentre Eleanor avvicinò la sua tazza di caffè ancora caldo prima di berne una generosa sorsata. Aveva atteso che anche la sconosciuta si presentasse e una volta che finalmente prese posto di fronte a lei, Eleanor appoggiò la schiena godendosi la bevanda amara e calda. « Devo ammettere che hai avuto coraggio a chiedermi di sederti al mio stesso tavolo... E lo apprezzo. In ogni caso... che cosa fai nella vita, Willa? » Peccò forse di presunzione, ma era la pura e semplice verità. Tutti in città conoscevano il nome Janssen e per quelli che non lo conoscevano, ne avevano comunque sentito parlare. Le industrie petrolifere del padre erano in ogni dove e, che lo si volesse o meno, tutti in qualche modo erano clienti di suo padre. Di certo poi, non era un mistero che Eleanor sfruttasse in ogni occasione il suo nome, ma nonostante questo era curiosa di scoprire qualcosa in più su quella ragazza così timida all'apparenza.

Insomma, non è da tutti, e soprattutto non capita tutti i giorni.》 Si permette di dire, sempre nel suo modo educato. Aveva sentito quel cognome sia per le strade di Ravenfire, sia a lavoro, e sapeva che fosse famoso, ma fino a quel momento non aveva mai avuto il piacere di conoscere un membro di questa famosa famiglia. 《Oh, uhm...lavoro nel Red Theatre come ballerina professionista.》 Non si sarebbe mai aspettata una domanda del genere ad un primo incontro, con qualsiasi persona. 《È...la mia passione fin da piccola.》 Mormora infine, sorseggiando la sua bevanda e spostando per un momento lo sguardo fuori dalla finestra. Si sentiva strana, agitata, e non ne capiva il motivo; probabilmente tutto ciò era causato dallo sguardo insistente e quasi accusatorio della sconosciuta verso di lei, ma di certo la giovane veggente non sarebbe intervenuta su questo particolare. Avrebbe solo lasciato correre. Era abituata a farsi guardare durante gli spettacoli di ballo, perché quell'imbarazzo improvviso?

Il sorriso sul volto della Janssen divenne sempre più ampio a seguito di quelle parole, perché in fondo Eleanor era anche quel tipo di persona a cui piacevano parecchio le lusinghe. Il fatto che poi non ci credesse era tutto un altro paio di maniche. Ampliò il sorriso sulle labbra carnose quando la vide illuminarsi per la sua professione. A quelle parole, Eleanor non poté non lasciar andare lo sguardo sul corpo asciutto della giovane, dalle spalle al corpo con un lieve accenno di seno per arrivare alle lunghe gambe. In quel momento aveva allontanato la tazza fumante, lasciando che il calore della tazza scaldasse le lunghe ed affusolate dita. « Sembra che tu abbia il fisico adatto... E non essere spaventata, sembra che ti possa mangiare da un momento all'altro, tranquilla. » Si lasciò sfuggire la Janssen, la quale aveva visto in Willa un timore quasi reverenziale nei suoi confronti. Accennò un sorriso prima di portare nuovamente alle labbra la tazza e berne questa volta una generosa sorsata. Il suo muoversi sulla sedia e il suo sguardo che sembrava non voler stare fermo nemmeno per un istante, erano solamente due degli indizi che Willa le stava dando. I suoi studi di psicologia avevano anche il vantaggio di saper leggere tra le righe il comportamento di una persona. « Deve essere impegnativa come vita... Immagino che la tua giornata sia fatta di duri allenamenti ed ore ed ore a provare, per non parlare di una dieta rigida, giusto? »

V'era qualcosa nella giovane di fronte a lei che la incuriosiva, la affascinava. Non sapeva dire se quel qualcosa risiedeva nel suo portamento o semplicemente nel suo modo di fare, così semplice, così alla mano, eppure avrebbe dovuto smettere di tempestarla di domande. La Janssen si ritrovò ad aggrottare appena la fronte nell'udire quelle parole. Ascoltandola, sembrava che tutto fosse un gioco da ragazzi, come se ogni cosa le fosse caduta dal cielo e nonostante la vita della newyorchese fosse ben diversa, qualche cosa in comune c'era. Alzò un angolo delle labbra, abbassò successivamente lo sguardo mentre sorseggiava il suo caffè stava ormai terminando. « A quanto parte, sembra anche che tu sia molto fortunata... Nessuna dieta, almeno non eccessivamente, e lo sforzo non sembra essere una fatica per te... Cosa nascondi? » Quelle parole fuoriuscirono quasi fosse una riflessione tra sé e sé. Assottiglio dapprima lo sguardo, abbassando il tono di voce fino a diventare quasi inudibile. Bevve così l'ultimo sorso di caffè fino a terminarlo definitivamente e quando si alzò, abbassò lo sguardo sulla giovane allungandole il suo biglietto su una grana pregiata. « Sono certa che ci incontreremo nuovamente, mia cara... Je l'espère vivement car, quand ça marche, c'est comme si on était sous le coup d'un charme magique.      J'ai adoré les écrire, c'est une certitude. Et j'espère que vous aurez plaisir à les lire, bien entendu. J'espère qu'elles vous transporteront. Et tant que je saurai comment m'y prendre, je continuerai.      Maintenant, il est temps pour moi de dégager la piste. Mais avant, je tiens à vous remercier d'être venu faire un tour. Gli anni epici di William Faulkner sono questi. 1931-1936. Dalla pubblicazione di Santuario, patto illecito – e licenziosamente memorabile – con il ‘genere’ noir per tirar su un po’ di soldi – che non arrivano – a Assalonne, Assalonne!, il capolavoro, pubblicato nel 1936, in 6mila copie di tiratura iniziale, emblema – all’epoca – dello scrittore scriteriato, involuto, biblico, tremendo, fallito. In questi anni, succede di tutto. L’11 gennaio nasce, dall’unione con Estelle, la figlia Alabama. “L’ospedale di Oxford non dispone di una incubatrice, e Faulkner è costretto a riportare a casa la bambina, che muore all’alba del 20 gennaio. Annientato dal dolore, porta con le braccia la piccola bara al cimitero, e al ritorno avverte l’ignara Estelle dell’accaduto” (Fernanda Pivano nella Cronologia al ‘Meridiano’ Mondadori che raduna i Romanzi di WF, nel 1995). Questo sarà lo start di una serie di tragedie. Nel 1932 muore il padre, Murry Cuthbert Falkner – la u fu aggiunta come vezzo dallo scrittore, speranza per un alato futuro. Due anni dopo muore il fratello Dean, guidava un biplano. Dean era del 1907, dieci anni più giovane di William – era stato lui a indurlo a praticare il volo – il senso di colpa lo devasta.

Quando pubblica Luce d’agosto (1932; traduzione pionieristica di Elio Vittorini, per Mondadori, nel 1939) Faulkner inala la certezza del fallimento. Con i libri non campa, perciò accetta di varcare l’Eden degli scrittori in cerca di fama. Hollywood. La Metro gli offre un contratto da 500 dollari a settimana; lavorare sui testi altrui, barattare qualche brandello di dialogo, corrompere la sua visione dell’arte, manichea, monastica, lo devasta. Ma accetta. Lisa C. Hickman, docente di “Southern literature” alla University of Mississippi, racconta gli anni hollywoodiani di Faulkner in un saggio pubblicato sulla “Los Angeles Review of Books”, The Road to Glory: Faulkner’s Hollywood Years, 1932-1936. L’inizio fu un disastro. “Faulkner arrivò agli studios il 7 maggio del 1932: in ritardo, spettinato, ubriaco, con la testa che sanguinava. Non riuscì a sistemarsi, scomparve per nove giorni. In seguito, dirà di aver vagato per la Death Valley. Come ci era arrivato se distava almeno 150 miglia da Hollywood?”. Faulkner che vaga nel deserto è una immagine di lungimirante potenza. Forse lì ha coscienza di essere un genio, gli scorpioni gli sussurrano che chi ha un compito può accettare tutto, che gli uomini non scalfiscono la voce del profeta, la necessità del santo.

Altra scena. “Poco prima di lasciare Oxford, Faulkner termina Luce d’agosto. Il manoscritto conta 527 pagine che Estelle, rosa di rabbia, un giorno, getta fuori dal finestrino della macchina. Faulkner fu costretto a raccattare i fogli del suo romanzo tra i fossati, i cespugli, la terra”. Il segno è doppio, qui. Primo: lo scrittore è ostile a chi ama, vampirizza le relazioni, i suoi scritti sono autenticati dalla rabbia altrui. Secondo: un grande libro è sigillato dall’abbandono, va cercato frugando i boschi. Che strana la vita di Faulkner: tra isolamento e palco, tra deserto e Nobel, tra il desueto e lo sgargiante, il lacero e il bacio.

La vita hollywoodiana di Faulkner è stata sotterrata per anni in una sorta di ferreo pudore. Dai romanzi del più grande scrittore americano del secolo avrebbero estratto dei film di vago successo – da Intruder in the Dust del 1949 a The Sound and the Fury, del 1959, con Yul Brinner e Joanne Woodward, fino a As I Lay Dying, di James Franco, del 2013. Il contrario – che il grande scrittore si piegasse a maneggiare sceneggiature altrui – suonava male. Le cose cambiano quando, nel 1987, Louis D. Brodsky pubblica, per la University Press of Mississippi, Country Lawyer and Other Stories for the Screen by William Faulkner. Fu una piccola sorpresa. Così Herbert Mitgang sul “New York Times”, il 28 luglio 1987, riassume il clamore: “Faulkner ha lavorato a 17 sceneggiature tra gli anni Trenta e Quaranta, tra adattamenti, collaborazioni con sceneggiatori più esperti e testi originali. La sua produzione per Hollywood, finora sconosciuta, ha toccato le 2500 pagine dattiloscritte – sostanzialmente, un romanzo oceanico, mai pubblicato”.

Gli aneddoti hollywwodiani di Faulkner – per lo più annaffiati di alcolici di ogni sorta, garanti di grandiose ubriacature – si sprecano. Questa è curiosa. Ottobre 1932. Los Angeles. Howard Hawks ha affittato una casa in collina. Gira tanto alcol e un bel fiotto di fanciulle. Clark Gable attacca Faulkner, sotto contratto per la Metro, che all’epoca “stipendia sessantadue scrittori alla settimana”. Chi sono i migliori scrittori viventi?, chiede l’attore. “Ernest Hemingway, Willa Cather, John Dos Passos, Thomas Mann e William Faulkner”, dice Faulkner. Gable gli fa, “Ma tu sei uno scrittore?”. Risposta laconica di Faulkner: “Certo, Mr. Gable. E tu, che mestiere fai?”. Faulkner “è stato lo scrittore che con più costanza ha lavorato per il ‘sistema Hollywood’, scrivendo o trattando soggetti e sceneggiature per cinque tra le maggiori case cinematografiche, la Metro, la Universal, la Rko, la Fox e la Warner Brothers”, scrive Stefan Solomon in William Faulkner in Hollywood: Screenwriting for the Studios (University of Georgia Press, 2017). A Faulkner, Hollywood faceva schifo. “Non mi piace il clima, la gente, la vita”, dice in un’intervista, nel 1951. “Sto male, sono depresso, ho la terribile certezza di perdere tempo”, scrive in una lettera, dagli studi della Metro.

Hollywood divora Faulkner. Lo scrittore lascia nel 1945; due anni dopo la Warner impugna il contratto e lo rimette al lavoro. Faulkner, che ha canonici problemi di soldi, si piega. Di tutto questo lavoro, immane, resta la firma di Faulkner in cinque film:

Today We Live (1933), di Howard Hawks, con Joan Crawford e Gary Cooper, basato su un racconto di Faulkner, Turnabout, pubblicato nel 1932 sul “Saturday Evening Post”;

The Road to Glory (1936) di Howard Hawks, con Fredric March e Warner Baxter, scritto da Faulkner con Joel Sayre, ambientato nella Prima guerra, in Francia;

Slave Ship (1937), di Tay Garnett, con Warner Baxter e Mickey Rooney, basato su un romanzo di George S. King, da cui Faulkner ha tratto il soggetto, trattato da altri in sceneggiatura;

To Have and Have Not (1944), di Howard Hawks, con Humphrey Bogart e Lauren Bacall, tratto da Avere e non avere dell’amico-odiato Ernest Hemingway. Faulkner scrive la sceneggiatura con Jules Furthman. Ridurre Hemingway in forma di film lo deprime; l’amicizia con Bogart lo rincuora;

The Big Sleep (1946), di Howard Hawks, con Humphrey Bogart e Lauren Bacall, tratto dal romanzo di Raymond Chandler, è effettivamente il grande ‘successo’ da sceneggiatore di Faulkner. Proprio quell’anno, l’uscita del Portable Faulkner, una antologia di scritti faulkneriani, “provoca una popolarità mondiale favorendo la ristampa dei titoli esauriti” (Pivano) e lanciando WF verso il Nobel, che casca tre anni dopo.

Hollywood non entra nella narrativa di Faulkner, se non per squarci. In Palme selvagge s’intuisce la morte della figlia Alabama, il Sud che marcisce come l’anima di Faulkner, i tradimenti. Palme selvagge è scritto sotto l’infatuazione per Meta Carpenter, la bella segretaria di Howard Howks, che WF frequenta da quando è entrato a Hollywood – a dire il vero, docile alle tentazioni, ha pure una cotta per Claudette Colbert, Oscar nel 1935 per Accadde una notte, di Frank Capra. Il regno fittizio di Hollywood, la devastazione del Sud. “Sembra che Faulkner voglia mettere in scena la vita come Caduta”, scrive Emilio Tadini in un bel saggio per L’urlo e il furore. “Il poeta, lo scrittore, sacrifica se stesso – fa letteralmente sacrificio di se stesso sull’altare del mondo. Si fa strumento rituale – tramite, raccordo, conduttore. Auto-umiliazione? Orgoglio? Ma di chi?”. Palme selvagge, tradotto in latinoamerica da Leonor Acevedo Suárez e suo figlio, Jorge Luis Borges, s’intitolava in origine If I Forget Thee, Jerusalem. Il Salmo 137 della Bibbia. Il più cupo, l’inaudito, l’inudibile. Che chiude con quel grido al massacro: “Figlia di Babilonia che ammazza/ beato chi ti renderà quanto hai fatto/ beato chi afferra i tuoi figli/ e li sfracella contro le rocce”. Qui, chi si massacra contro la petraia del mondo, usando parole che lapidano, eco del deserto e dello sconfinato, è lo scrittore. (d.b.)

Dovrebbe dirle che è felice che abbia giocato dopo la caduta della Walsh, che è stata brava, e dovrebbe esser fiero che nonostante la sconfitta ha giocato bene, /ma/... Ma Valentyne detesta perdere. È una cosa che non accetta, è il suo punto debole, e avverte il fastidio fargli formicolare le mani, i muscoli tesi. 《 Sei venuta a girare il coltello nea piaga? 》 Niente, non ce la fa. Scusatelo.

Onestamente sì. Avrebbe voluto essere incoraggiato, supportato, ma non s'aspetta nulla di tutto ciò, da Sophia, che ora ritiene egoista quasi quanto lui. Hey ! Ça fait un moment non ? Depuis le 31 juillet très exactement. Si vous êtes toujours dans les parages à attendre les épisodes suivants, je suis désolée, mais il faudra attendre encore un peu. Le retour à la réalité étudiante mais surtout à l’agreg n’a pas été très compliqué, je me suis vite remise dedans, mais c’est une activité qui prend vraiment beaucoup de temps. Quand je ne bosse pas, j’essaie de rester à jour dans mes séries et mes podcasts, je cuisine avec mon mini-four, mais j’ai peu le temps d’écrire et de faire ça bien. J’essaierai d’envoyer une vague d’articles pendant les vacances de Noël - il faudra que je travaille aussi pendant ces vacances, on sera à mi-chemin entre les deux morceaux de préparation pour les écrits. Bref avec le concours blanc qui approche et tous les westerns que je dois regarder, il n’y aura pas d’article avant décembre, peut-être courant décembre et vacances de Noël au plus tard, il faudra bien finir par boucler le récit de mes folles aventures ! - Je dois connaître sur le bout des doigts 5 oeuvres littéraires : 17e siècle avec Comme il vous plaira de Shakespeare, 18e siècle avec Roxana de Defoe, 19e siècle avec la poésie de Walt Whitman, 20e siècle avec Willa Cather et 21e siècle avec Atonement de Ian McEwan.

- Je dois maîtriser deux questions de civilisation (une troisième sera ajoutée pour l’oral) : côté Royaume-Uni, le Royaume-Uni à l’épreuve de la crise 1970-79 et pour les US, la construction de l’Ouest américain (1865-1895) dans les films hollywoodiens. Par exemple, j’ai regardé The Iron Horse, 2h30, muet en noir et blanc.

- Je dois à nouveau apprendre des listes de vocabulaire pour la version et le thème.

- Je dois maîtriser à la perfection la battue alvéolaire voisée, les règle d’assimilation, la congruence, les énoncés en do décalés, les relatives complétives, les invariants sémantiques... pour l’épreuve de linguistique et de phonologie.

On her first day on the Isle, Finley gets caught stealing a bracelet off of Lady Tremaine.  But rather than tell the woman, the boy introduces himself as Jay, son of Jafar, and offers Finley a partnership.  Their alliance soon grows into a friendship, and Jay introduces Finley to the other VKs, bringing her into their team.  The five of them rule the island with ease, causing trouble wherever they go.  It isn’t perfect, but Finley has learned to move on from Corona, and from Auradon.  So of course, that’s when Prince Ben makes his first royal proclamation; bringing children of the Isle to Auradon.  The daughter of Maleficent, the son of Jafar, the daughter of the Evil Queen, and the son of Cruella De Vil.  And the princess of Corona.

Summary: Harley Hook was a pirate, through and through.  Always at her brother’s side, always with Uma and the crew, always near her beloved Gil, Harley Hook was a pirate.  And as a pirate, she absolutely hated Mal’s gang.  They thought that they were so much better than anyone, just because of Mal’s mom - big whoop, it’s not like Maleficent could even use magic on the Isle.  So yeah, Harley hated the VKs, her loyalty was to the crew, and she was never seen away from Harry or Gil.  And then the princeling decides to bring children of some of the worst villains to Auradon: Mal, Evie, Jay, Carlos.  And Harley.  Harley couldn’t be more furious at being taken away from her crew, or at being sent to Auradon, or at being forced to work with the VKs to get Fairy Godmother’s wand.  But she knows that if she wants to get back to the Isle, back to her family, she needs that barrier down as much as they do.  She’s just not sure that they can cooperate long enough for that.
