Summary: In which Laka tries to fix Em and Will's relationship and gets more than he bargained for.

Laka watched the ocean from where he was sitting on the beach, the waves ebbing and flowing but not yet reaching him. It’d be a while before the tide came in enough for that, and he planned to be gone before then – he had a 5:20am appointment to make after all. As he idlely watched the waves, he wondered how Em and Will’s talk had gone, if it had indeed happened. While they’d been in the tower together during their shift, Will had told Laka he was going to speak to Em after work, but Laka was half expecting Will to chicken out. It wasn’t the first time it’d happened after all. He hoped for all of their sakes, Em and Will’s especially, that the two of them did talk and were able to work things out, because even if they weren’t the best for each other romantically, they were still (normally) good friends. Laka himself also didn’t want to be stuck in the awkward middle ground between them any longer, although that was a secondary concern to his friends’ happiness.

Emily just wants Sonny out so she can take over the Captain rank.

- She demanded respect when she was the acting Captain, but she never showed respect to Sonny and his decisions.

- She showed favouritism to Hina since day one and treated Kainalu poorly just because she thought he didn’t belong.

- She blamed Laka for Hina's mistake & treated him unfairly on her charge day because of her resentment over the things he got away with in the past and how different his commitment to the job than hers.

Second episode of Rescue Hi-Surf was a little better in terms of providing things that would let us connect with the characters. For me it was a hint of a reason why Em and Will broke up. It's a hint for now, so the truth may be anything from him wanting to have kids and her not wanting that, through miscarriage to actual abortion, although I doubt prime-time tv show would have the courage to go there.

Imagine the conflict though, especially if Will was against it (because 1 -- how dare he, it's her body, but 2 -- is he a catholic or smth?). I am now curious, though, so count me in.

In the same post -- Brilliant Minds. This show -- I'm definitely interested in. I never watched anything with Zachary Quinto, but I can see why people love him. This character he portrays, Oliver Wolf, is someone you want to root for. It is in the writing, of course, in his characterization -- dedicated doctor, difficult past, loner, and also face-blind -- but ZQ acting lifts it above and beyond.

I usually find it hard to connect with maybe-possibly-autistic-coded characters, so I was hoping someone else will be more up my alley, and it looks like a potential love interest for Dr. Wolfie may be my guy. There's conflinct here, at the start, but when Wolfie proves his theory, Dr. Nichols gives him a nod of appreciation. So, instead of butting heads, I think they will be challenging each other, and I'm definitely in for it. Make it slow-burn, please. Also, Dr. Nichols is ex-military, so... Yeah.

That was my first impression.

My ambition wouldn’t allow for compromise.

It’s the words that ring in Will’s head whenever he lays eyes on Em, the reminder that of cut she made to his heart, severing the valves before she tore it right out of his chest. He feels that acutely when he’s in her presence despite the fact he plays it cool.

He'd shut down completely after she left, didn’t date, didn’t fuck just kept his head down and focused on his dream of being a firefighter because while she had ambitions, he did too. They’d just become forgotten about in the pursuit of her dream.

And now his own have been dashed, because even though he scored in the top percentile of the Honolulu FD Fire Test, his face, it doesn’t quite fit so that fresh start he was hoping for, it’s gone. He’s heart broken all over again, which is why he’s sitting on the sand, sipping a beer and staring at the sea as the sun starts to lower in the distance.

“I’ll give you a dollar for them.” You say as you sit down alongside him and he tilts his head towards you with that sullen expression on his sun-kissed features.

“You’d be wasting your money.” He informs you and you shrug your shoulders.

“It’s my money to waste.” You counter and despite the absolute shittiness of the day he finds himself smiling.

You always do this to him, whenever he gets in his own head, you’re there like a ray of sunshine to brighten his day with some silly remark. This thing between the two of you, it may be new but it’s been coming for a while.  Will was just too ruined to do anything with it until an evening just like this one when you kissed him on beach.

You’d tasted like strawberries from the wine cooler you’d been drinking, the scent of coconut sun lotion clinging to your skin as he’d undressed you under the moonlight. He’d spent hours making love to you on the sand, the stars shining brightly in the sky above. He’d drowned in you that night, immersed himself in your ocean and when he’d finally come up for air, he felt like a new man.

One that worthy of all the good things that life had to give him.

“I didn’t get in.” He says finally, setting the beer bottle down. “I’m not sure if it was ever what I wanted anyway or if it was just a good distraction after Em. I’m…” He pauses then, trying to puzzle out the words he’s searching for. “I guess I’m a little lost right now. I don’t really know where I’m heading…”

The words hang between the two of you reminding Will that as a partner he doesn’t have that much to offer. He’s a man that works with his ex and is struggling to come to terms with the fact his only chance of escape has just been torpedoed. He’s not the type of guy you should be jumping into a relationship with right now but here you are doing just that.

“Come on.” You say lightly, your fingers entwining with his before you pull him to his feet. “The let’s go grab dinner and see if can figure it out together.”

Together… Will thinks as he picks up his beer bottle to toss in the recycling can.

Will likes the sound of that.
