Lab Rat Fox

Went with an alt prompt today and an OC I haven't played with for a bit (who was hoping I forgot him), Will Bauer!

It was almost easier, when the nightmares were something he could believe he woke up from.

He knows, now, it didn't change anything. Wasn't going to erase the magic in his blood, or magically turn him into the human son his father wanted.

All hiding his real nature from him had done was cut him off from the truth. From his chance at learning to control it before it controlled him. Before it turned him into something feral and dangerous.

He can almost understand the cage.

It didn't have to be this way. He's seen the others, now. Others like him. Who don't have to fear the other side of who they are, who know it and control it and maybe even love it.

But he's too far gone for that.

He's never fought to get out, not like the wolves here with him. The others think it's because he's afraid of his father, or because he doesn't believe he can escape.

He's not afraid of his father. He's afraid of himself.

He might be able to escape these bars, but he can never escape the monster in his blood.

He wants his father to be right. For there to be some way to undo the wild side tangled in his DNA, for some trick that pulls on the threads and unravels it all like a snagged sweater.

But maybe, even if it worked, he'd unravel so far there'd be nothing left.

Maybe, that's the only fate left he can hope for.

🍄 [MUSHROOM] How likely is your OC to eat random berries/mushrooms they find?

Will is definitely a "try basically anything once" kind of person, given his fox traits, which allow him to eat things that would be toxic to a full human. He's also able to tell what he really shouldn't eat. However, on at least one occasion, he's eaten a mushroom that, for a fox, is not poisonous, but did have enough of an effect that his adoptive family was forced to deal with a very loopy fox for several hours.

🌰 [CHESTNUT] What food group does your OC mostly eat (e.g., grains, fruits)?

Will eats a pretty even split of everything going. As a feldgeist, he is fond of anything with grains, and being a carnivorous type of shapeshifter, requires a certain amount of meat in his diet to stay healthy. Since foxes eat much more than just meat, however, he's fond of pretty much everything one of them would be.

🌻 [SUNFLOWER] Where would your OC get lost in the moment/beauty of the place?

In a forest. Will likes the peace and calm of being somewhere by himself, a luxury he didn't have much of his life. He is a fairly solitary person by nature, more so than the wolves like Matti, and he enjoys his alone time. He would happily spend several hours in a forest clearing just listening to the wildlife around him.

🌾 [RICE SHEAF] How picky is your OC with food? What will and won’t they eat?

Will is probably one of the least fussy eaters anyone could imagine. He will eat practically anything, which is a combination of his fox side's eclectic eating habits and the way his father expected him to eat what he was given and not complain. He avoids grapes and chocolate after they both made him sick at various times, and he can't stand coffee.

🍃 [FALLEN LEAF] What’s the darkest period of time your OC has been through?

When he was locked up in the lab and experimented on. Honestly, Will's whole life has basically been a pretty grim existence, living with his family blaming him for his mother's death and treating him as if he'd intentionally taken her from them.

🌵 [CACTUS] How physically resilient is your OC?

More than people expect. Will is kind of skinny and fragile looking, but he's capable of withstanding a lot of trauma. By the end of the story, it's pretty clear that he is in fact incredibly resilient, even if he never should have needed to be.
