I visited the WGA library to read Yellowjackets scripts and wanted to share some of my findings! (Pt. 3)
Here are my notes for 1x04! Quotation marks indicate direct lines from the script, whereas everything else is me paraphrasing.
Note: You can find an early version of 1x04 on Script Slug, but this must have been a very early version because many things are different. The notes I have here are not on that version of the script, rather they are on the final version of the script that ended up being used for the episode, so there will just be some new details and deleted scenes but no major plot differences between the script here and what we saw in the episode.
1x04 “Bear Down”
Tumblr media
A lot of this is going to be about Nat because this is kind of her episode!
•During Nat’s plane crash nightmare in the opening scene, the script says that Adult Nat briefly appears in the seat next to her father before being replaced by Teen Nat again. I thought this was interesting, I wonder what the writers are trying to say by having a flash of Adult Nat here, does it contribute to the whole “We’ve been here for years” line when Nat dies? A representation of how Nat is essentially stuck in this place even 25 years later?
But also, the dream is Teen Nat’s dream, not Adult Nat’s, so is this would mean the dream is prophetic in a sense because Nat is seeing her future self for a moment. Maybe that’s why they cut it out? Or was it just because Juliette wasn’t available for such a small scene?
•Also in the dream sequence, the rifle Nat sees on her lap is noted by the script to be the same one she eventually uses to hunt in the wilderness. Another prophetic piece to Nat’s dream.
All of that combined with Nat’s dad’s line of “It’s been waiting for us” shows that, even though Nat is the biggest skeptic in the wilderness, she is one of the first people the wilderness speaks to and gives prophetic visions to.
•Nat is said to be 14 years-old when her father dies. The script says she and Kevyn are 14 in that scene and the year is specified as 1993. I have always wondered how old she was supposed to be in that scene!
(But it’s worth noting that they might have aged her up a year in the final product because, in the script, the cassette she pops into her boom box when her and Kevyn enter her room is the album Where You Been by Dinosaur Jr., which came out in 1993. However, in the actual episode, Nat puts in the song “Feel the Pain” by Dinosaur Jr. instead, which came out in 1994. So this scene might actually be in 1994 in the final product despite what the script says.)
•Teen Kevyn Tan is absolutely hopelessly in love with Nat in the flashback scene. He’s described as “clearly nervous to be in the bedroom of his crush” and starts coloring his nails with Sharpie just to distract himself from his anxiety.
Then Nat pats the bed for him to sit next to her and Kevyn is “thrumming with hormones and anxiety.” When Nat takes Kevyn’s hand to start painting his nails, we get this description:
“For Kevyn, her gentle touch, her careful attention…he’s in heaven. And simultaneously deep inside the hell of his own desire. Should he kiss her? Would she hate that?”
Nat is described as “oblivious” to Kevyn’s feelings in this moment.
I think these descriptions help us understand how much Kevyn idealizes Natalie in his head. He has this unrealistic, romanticized view of her even 25 years later when they meet again as adults. He likes the idea of her, but when he actually sees her trauma (and sees her as an actual person) he distances himself.
•There are some…interesting descriptions of Shauna and Adam getting freaky in the script. This girl is scratching him hard enough to draw blood, choking him, putting her fingers in his mouth, etc. This shows how Shauna is using Adam to relive the adrenaline she felt in the wilderness.
•When Travis points the gun at Nat, the rest of the girls scatter and run away in fear, but Nat stays perfectly still, staring him down.
•While Taissa is talking to Diane about her political campaign and Diane asks her what “really happened out there,” Tai hears wolves howling in the distance. Poor Tai is more traumatized by Van’s wolf attack than Van is.
•When Kevyn and Nat meet for dinner as adults, they reminisce about breaking into the chem lab at school and stealing equipment to make bongs. My fun little headcanon is that Nat got caught during this incident and the principal put her on the soccer team to set her on the right path.
•Also in this scene, Kevyn notes that he last saw Nat “twenty-two years ago,” which means he and Nat were in contact for a year or two after the rescue. I’m thinking Nat probably stayed in Wiskayok for a year after they were rescued and just decided to cut all ties at some point and leave town, ghosting everyone she knew there.
There’s this line as well:
“Kevyn: You were my best friend and you just…
You fucking ghosted me.”
•There’s another deleted scene (which they did film and we actually got to briefly see it in the trailer for the episode but they took it out of the final product for some reason!) where Adult Nat is looking in the mirror after her date with Kevyn, having mixed feelings about her grief over Travis and her new feelings for Kevyn, and she sees her Teen self behind her in the mirror imitating her movements. A little trauma regression moment and I’m not sure why it was cut. I’m just salty because I love when Sophie Thatcher and Juliette Lewis are in a room together. But here’s a photo of it:
Tumblr media
•There’s an interesting part where Shauna finds Javi’s journal and looks through it. The journal has a bunch of drawings in it (wildlife sketches, comic book characters, etc.) that are described as really good; Javi’s talent as an artist is emphasized by the script.
I think this some subtle proof that the writers initially intended for Adam to be Adult Javi, with the obvious nod to the artist talent and I feel like the scripts for these early episodes highlight the closeness between Javi and Shauna in the wilderness more. The writers did confirm that they originally wanted Javi to be Adam, so I think you can see some details that support that in the scripts.
•Before Nat pulls the trigger on her dad, she feels “years of humiliation and thwarted rage” and she automatically “stiffens” when he steps towards her. Just a reminder of how much this man traumatized her!
•When Shauna butchers the deer for the first time, she is described as feeling a “thrill she’s never felt before.” This goes back to her sexual relationship with Adam in the adult timeline, that adrenaline from her role as the butcher that she misses and is trying to recreate.
•When Shauna returns home from her antics with Adam, Jeff asks, “How was book club?” and Shauna immediately vomits all over the floor🫢

Personal Highlights of the Episode
The impersonations of Fatin by the girls.
Tumblr media
The sequence that flips back and forth with Fatin practicing the cello and partying. Two sides of the same coin, but 99% of people only judge her based on one side of her.
“I’m not fucking crazy!” I know most people either love/hate Leah, but jfc Sarah Pidgeon is an excellent actor and plays Leah’s moments to perfection, especially during her non-verbal scenes. The emotion she displays with just facial expressions is just fantastic.
Tumblr media
If you guys don’t know by now, I’m a Leatin whore (but like, even at a basic BFF level too. I’ll take any and all forms) so THE highlight is the makeup hug.
Tumblr media
Things I Didn't Catch the First Time
These girls just strolling through the woods with no means of protection. Dot should know better. Why haven’t they at least sharpened a tree branch or something? Even a blunt branch would be better than nothing.
Shelby and Toni catching eyes while they sit by the fire waiting for the water to boil and Martha counting. Then Shelby stealing a second glance back to Toni? The Shoni clues were subtle and built up perfectly throughout the season.
Observations / Theories / Questions
Everything during this episode just screams “Don’t underestimate Fatin.” Everyone at some point underestimates her and it blows up in their face. Fatin’s dad, the girls thinking Fatin wouldn’t rip her own pants, Leah in general, Gretchen, Dot/Shelby/Rachel when they immediately assume she was just painting her nails, and most likely the agent too (even though we don't see them interact with her much).
THEORY – Fatin’s interview reveals big ass information going forward, whether it be Nora’s fate or something they find out in season 2, which is why Fatin has the shortest interview out of all the girls. Most of the episodes have the girls talking to the agents sporadically throughout it, Fatin gets one sequence and it’s all about believing Leah’s theories. Then all three looking back and forth between each other? It’s weird as hell. And what do we learn this episode? Fatin is really good at reading people. Fatin, per her father, has no respect for authority figures. While I believe all the girls are skeptical of the agents, all of this leads me to believe Fatin will be the first one we see actually fight back against them during the interview.
THEORY – The agents and Gretchen will focus on Leah unraveling their experiment, but in reality, it’s going to be Fatin. She’s the only one that listened to Leah from start to finish (I think the other girls will get on board at some point in season 2) and she’ll be the one that silently questions things when Leah verbally brings it to attention. Fatin blows things up when she’s 100% certain and covers her ass in the process, whereas Leah reacts impulsively and it bites her in the ass most of the time. Therefore, Leah will react too soon, and Gretchen’s team will shut it down, BUT Fatin comes in to save the day when they make the same mistake everyone else does and underestimate her.
Tumblr media
Fatin is super critical of her mother (calling her Dragon woman), but immediately takes her side when shit goes down with her dad. We even see Fatin admit to Leah later in the season that she misses her mom. Her mom that we only ever see push her to be better. Fatin’s mom is probably the only person who has never underestimated her and knows exactly what she has the potential to be.
THEORY – Fatin is painted early on as Daddy’s Little Girl and even told by him that “You’re just like your dad, kid.” I think Fatin’s biggest fear is that she really is just like her father, even after telling him that they’re nothing alike. I think, while on the island, we will see Fatin transition into the person her mother has always seen in her: driven, passionate, strong, and successful. Fatin is not like her father; she will be exactly what we’ve seen her mother be pre-scandal. A powerful woman whose success is her own. This is also why I can’t see Fatin’s mom staying with her husband permanently. Everything we’ve seen of her screams that it’s out of character for her to stay with a man cheating on her.
Leah’s emotional distraught over Fatin being lost after dragging her every chance she got earlier. The voice crack when finding Fatin. Not criticizing Fatin for just painting her nails like Rachel, Shelby and Dot do. Where my Leatin stans at?
Tumblr media
Not that I’m experienced in any capacity when it comes to infidelity, but like, wouldn’t the smart move be to not have your tablet on full display in the kitchen when you’re receiving/sending nudes? You’re rich (or your wife is anyway), Mr. Jadmani, buy a damn burner phone or something.
“Stop fighting, you’ll see everything gets easier.” Hearing this after knowing what Martha’s backstory is… wow.
Tumblr media
It’s completely fucked that Fatin’s mom lost her listings because her husband cheated on her. Like what kind of logic is that bullshit? This asshole literally sitting right beside her putting the blame and consequence on HER. SHE won’t be able to show her face, dude, what the fuck about you? Society is fucked, man.
Alex is the only one on Gretchen’s team that I like.
THEORY – I think he’s the one that blows this whole operation open when the girls get rescued. He’s gonna be the one to side with them if/when it goes to court, even if it means incriminating himself. OR Gretchen is going to frame Alex for the death of Jeanette and he’ll go down for her murder. He obviously carries a lot of guilt over her death, and probably will accept his fate if it comes to that.
Why the hell we throwing a whole ass book into the fire when you should be tearing pages out to prolong the longevity of the fire?
Fatin’s social awareness is not talked about enough. She’s the only one that notices Leah’s in her head after finding Jeanette’s body missing, she notices Leah has separated herself from the group after finding Fatin and is the one that approaches Leah to make amends, she knows exactly what needs to be done to calm her mom down (lipstick), etc.
I think it’s a nice comparison to the flashbacks with her dad when Fatin is the one to initiate the making up with Leah. We see that Fatin makes ZERO effort to apologize to her parents about leaking the nudes, and I think both these scenes really cement the fact that Fatin won’t apologize for something she thinks is right. Her belief in her own ethics and morals will never be put on the back burner to make someone else feel better, but that doesn’t mean she won’t apologize when she knows she’s partially to blame or out of line.
Final thought – Fatin is underrated as hell, and the layers to her character are subtle enough that she really does appear basic to anyone who isn’t actively paying attention to her. She’s a very complex and well-written character. I have a hard time picking a favorite out of the girls, but Fatin is definitely up there.

Field Notes
Field Note #051—Fatin’s mom is one of the top real estate agents in the Bay Area. She sells big-ticket properties in San Francisco and the East Bay, and prides herself in hosting the best open-house events. One of her secrets is playing classical music at just the right volume to make the house feel classy yet cozy.
Field Note #052 – Cellists and other string performers can’t keep long nails because they interfere with technique.
Field Note #053 – Fatin only goes for college dudes. Her take on high school guys? They haven’t done enough living. If a guy doesn’t have a monthly car payment or do his own laundry, how can he be trusted in a hook-up context?
Field Note #061 – How each girl learned to swim: Martha took a class with her mom; Toni would sneak into her neighbor’s above-ground pool by night until she kind of just taught herself; Rachel and Nora had private lessons; Fatin’s grandparents had an infinity pool; Leah learned in Lake Tahoe at a family reunion; Dot went to the quarry; and Shelby’s dad threw her into the country club pool sink-or-swim style.
Field Note #062 – The waterfall is an especially good water source because the water is moving, decreasing the chances of bacteria.

my extremely specific s3 rayllum predictions
90% of these thoughts are in my specific Rayllum wishlist post, but here’s some more + some elaboration:
There’s an episode arc of them just adjusting to no longer having Ezran with them
In addition or on top of that, Zym doing baby dragon shenanigans is a lot harder to manage when you no longer have a literal dragon whisperer with you (ie. Zym wandering off and both of them panicking)
This also includes to Rayla and Callum learning to come out of their bickering spats without anyone else’s intervention. S2 was a big step in the right direction, but there are definitely still kinks to be worked out in terms of their communication and conflict resolution skills with one another.
Callum being protective and angered when he hears about how Rayla was mistreated and/or bullied by her peers growing up
Rayla’s fear of losing Callum plays a part in her wanting to keep him safe even as they move deeper into Xadia and have to take more risks.
Callum’s elf impression is mostly funny, but does lead to a rather sweet and teasing moment between the two
A birthday episode
With both of their birthday snippets being so focused on family, and the fact we know their birthdays are close within canon (Callum says he’s 14 and 5/6ths in the beginning of S1, and at least two weeks has passed since then; that’s only six more weeks until his birthday, and then another two until Rayla’s) makes this all the more a possibility.
For Rayla, there’s the emotional upheaval of going home but without Runaan. For Callum, there’s the sting of knowing both of his parents are dead, and being apart from Ezran.
I’m just saying, Callum drawing Rayla into his family portrait isn’t that far out of reach.
On a somewhat related note, any lines along these veins:
“I need you,” “I can’t lose you too,” “You’re my family too,” “I’m here,” “I got you,” “I’m not going anywhere,” and “You’re my best friend.”
Neither of them want to be separated once Zym is home, but neither is really sure of how to begin that discussion.
Rayla telling Callum about Aaravos once he decides he wants to explore connecting to other arcanums.
Rayla’s feelings for Callum being addressed in some manner, whether in pining looks, growing closeness, or something along those lines. Given TDP’s short seasons, Rayla’s feelings for Callum wouldn’t have been confirmed in S2 if they weren’t going to do something with them in S3; otherwise they could have just kept hinting and building to it for longer.
AKA, Rayla kissing Callum on the cheek, please.
Likewise, now that Claudia is out of Callum’s mind as a romantic interest, and the drawing scene in 2x07 foreshadowing that his feelings for Rayla are already forming, we should see some confirmation of his feelings for her in S3.
It’s gonna hit him like a bus.
They get to see the bushes where moonberries are from.
Callum asking so many questions about elf culture, and Rayla is both fond and exasperated (but mostly fond) while she answers him. This also can work as a parallel to her wanting to distract him from missing Ezran, the same way he tried to distract her by asking her questions in 1x05.
This is more of a wish, but callbacks, please. So many callbacks and parallels.
Especially reminiscing / talking about when they first met.
Rayla and Callum being forcefully separated from one another, whether by their environment (ie. the wilderness) or outside forces (attackers / foes), and having to fight / find their way back to one another.
This raises the stakes, as none of the trio or these two have been forcefully separated from one another except in 1x04, and that was by and large an accident. Here, meanwhile in Xadia, Callum would be in a lot of danger basically anywhere, and despite his magic, isn’t as capable of handling it.

the breakup
welcome to another narration, this time it takes place during 1x04 of hsmtmts :))
molly was waiting for rehersals to start when her friends came up to her a little confused.
“shouldn’t you be inside the theatre already” gert asked
“yes but for some reason we’re still outside” molly sighed
“what if you ditch rehersal and we’ll go to slices instead” nico suggested
“nico no” karolina reprimended her
“what it was a harmless question” nico defended herself
molly was about to respond before ej and nini appeared and started to argue. it looks like she found out about her phone.
“do you think nini found out” gert asked
“by the looks of it…yes” molly answered
“i probably helped nini figure out” alex spoke up
“wilder what did you do” chase looked at him
“nothing nini came up to me saying that she knew i was an expert with technology and asked me if i could recover a message that was deleted from her phone so i did” alex explained
“who was it from” karolina asked
“ricky” alex said
molly just let out a humorless laugh, of course ej stole her phone….ricky sent nini a message and he felt well she wouldn’t say threatened but somewhere along those lines
“summer’s over” was what molly heard nini say to ej
“oh my god” chase broke molly out of her thoughts
“looks like nini and ej’s relationship is over” karolina pointed out
“i mean ej asked for it” gert didn’t look like she had sympathy for him
“let’s be honest, it was doomed to end as soon as ricky showed up again” alex finally said the thoughts that molly was thinking
nini turned around and asked why they weren’t in the theatre and ashlyn was explaining that natalie bagley’s hamster had escaped
“i think that’s my cue to leave” karolina immediately ran out at the thought of a hamster loose
“see you later molly” nico waved before following karolina
miss jenn did eventually open the theatre doors and gert, chase, and alex said their goodbyes before leaving which left molly with her thoughts
if she thought rehersals were awkward before…they were about to get more awkward now
